Bertha Woodie Coffey
Bertha Lillian Woodie Coffey, 77, of Culpeper, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2003, at her residence.
She was born Oct. 26, 1925, in Charlottesville, to the late Tom and Lucinda Powell Woodie.
Mrs. Coffey is survived by her two sons, Carroll and his wife, Daisy, of Locust Grove, and Steve Coffey of Griffinsburg; one daughter, Barbara Utz and her husband, Floyd, of Culpeper; one sister, Nannie Estes of Lynchburg; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Emmett E. Coffey; two brothers, John "Buster" Woodie and George Woodie; and four sisters, Arabella York, Lillie Moon, Virginia McAllister, and Helen Watson.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Found & Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Found & Sons Funeral Chapel of Culpeper. Interment
will follow in Monticello Memory Gardens.

Margaret Crosby
Margaret Crosby, 77, of Charlottesville, passed away Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003, after a short illness.
She was born Jan. 2, 1926, in New York. She raised her family in Marlboro, N.J. She and her husband retired to Charlottesville in 1985.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Eugene "Gene" Crosby; two daughters, Barbara of Freehold, N.J., and Diane Lloyd of Fluvanna and her friend, Steve Ketterer; one granddaughter, Pamela and her husband, James Strother, of Fluvanna; a sister, Jean Young of Malvern, Pa.; a brother, John Smith and his wife, Marianna, of Smith Mountain Lake; and many nieces and nephews.

Robert T. Douglas
Robert Thomas Douglas, 89, of White Hall, Md., died Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003.
Born Jan. 30, 1913, in Albemarle County, he was the son of the late Henry Nathaniel Douglas and Sarah Beatrice Ward Douglas.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Viola Coe Fletcher Douglas; two sisters, Tilley Douglas and Mary Douglas; one brother, Marshall Douglas; and one stepson, Emory Fletcher.
He is survived by two sisters, Bessie Elizabeth D. Pippin and Kate F. Douglas, of Charlottesville; one stepson, William Fletcher of White Hall, Md.; two brothers-in-law, Arthur and Wilmer Coe; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Robert was an Army veteran and served his country from 1942 to 1945.
Following the death of his wife, Robert, "Buck", made his home with his stepson, William Fletcher, who was his best friend and gave him much love and care.
Burial was held Jan. 7, 2003, at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens, Timonium, Md.

A funeral service for Gail Lynn Norris Faris will be held at 2 p.m. this afternoon at Cherry Avenue Christian Church, with Mr. Harv Ayers officiating. Interment
will follow in Mooreland Baptist Church cemetery.

Ralph Vance Herndon
Ralph Vance Herndon, 71, of Orange, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, in the University of Virginia Medical Center.
Born Sept. 9, 1931, in Louisa County, he was the son of the late Percy Nathaniel Herndon and the late Annie Bertha Cole Herndon.
Mr. Herndon was a retried partner in Herndon Brothers Chevrolet and Pontiac, member of Gordonsville, Presbyterian Church, Navy veteran of the Korean War, and a member of Waddell Masonic Lodge No. 228 of Gordonsville.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Cummins Herndon of Orange; one daughter, Cynthia Herndon Parcell and husband, Stanard Clifton Parcell, of Mechanicsville; one brother, Winifred L. Herndon and wife, Elva, of Orange; two grandchildren, Timothy James Parcell and Allison Meredith Parcell, both of Mechanicsville; two sisters-in-law, Joyce C. Herndon of Gordonsville, and Margie B. Herndon of North Garden.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Cole Herndon, Percy Herndon Jr. and W. Seldon Herndon, and one sister, Isabelle Herndon Calhoun.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday from the Preddy Funeral Chapel, Orange, with interment in Maplewood cemetery in Gordonsville. Services will be conducted by the Rev. Tina Cox with Masonic Rites conducted by Waddell Masonic Lodge No. 228 of Gordonsville at the graveside service.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Katie W. Kavounas
Katie Werner Kavounas, 97, of Allentown, Pa., died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at Phoebe Home of Allentown.
She was born in Nurenberg, Germany, to the late Herman Werner and the late Amelia Stenz Werner.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Stelios A. Kavounas.
She is survived by her four sons, Rudolph C. Walenta of Reiffton, Pa., Alexander H. Kavounas of Allentown, Pa., Nicholas A. Kavounas of Allentown, Pa., and Thomas E. Kavounas of Charlottesville; 11 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Services will be announced at a later date at the convenience of the family.

Woodrow Wilson Kent
Woodrow Wilson "Jack" Kent, 74, of Waynesboro, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at Augusta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center at Fishersville.
He was born Feb. 5, 1928, in Staunton, a son of the late Robert Lenzey Kent and Narcissa Florence Gray Kent.
He was raised in Albemarle County by his family members and a special dear aunt, Christine Kent.
He attended Red Hill High School and in his senior year recieved a scholarship to Fork Union Military Academy. He graduated in 1948 from Fork Union Military Academy on a full baseball scholarship.
In June 1948, he recieved a contract to play with the Chicago Cubs in Class A-1 Baseball in Elizabethton, Tenn. Mr. Kent also played ball with the Waynesboro Generals, and Alaskan Air Commandos. Jack was forced to take an inactive roll in sports and early retirement due to MS
He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He worked at Corner Hardware until 1951. He was retired from DuPont Co. after completing 27 and a half years of service, working in the Benger Lab and security with the company.
Mr. Kent was a member of Wayne Hills Baptist Church.
Mr. Kent was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Timothy Glenn Kent; and a special aunt, Christine Kent.
Survivors include his wife Myrtle D. Kent; two sons, Terry Kent and wife, Twila, of Tulsa, Okla., and Anthony Wayne "Tony" Kent of Hamburg, Germany; his brother, Robert Kent and wife, Joan, of Charlottesville; two sisters, Dora Kent Pugh of North Garden, and Thelma Kent of Lovingston; an aunt, Daisy Brockenbrough of Waynesboro; special sister-in-law, Helen Dudley of Greenwood; and several nieces and nephews.
A service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. this afternoon at the Chapel of McDow Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Episcopal Church cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Jesse Rittenhouse, John Kent, Junior Kent, Wayne Brockenbrough, John Hunton, Roger Shifflett, L.G. Ferrier, Al Fox and Ray Lafferty.
Honorary pallbearers will be Larry Toms, Pi Griggs, Garry Dudley and Oliver McCauley.

Katie Butler May
Katie Frances Butler May, 73, of Orange, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at her residence.
Born Jan. 1, 1930, in Madison County, she was the daughter of the late William Baker and the late Daisy Nicholson Butler.
She was a member of the North Pamunkey Baptist Church and was retired from the Orange County School System.
She is survived by her husband, Robert L. May of Orange, three daughters, Joan Wayland and husband, Denny, or Orange, Jane Eppard of Orange, and Julia Elmore and husband, Chuck, of Fredericksburg; one son, Robbie May and wife, Millie, of Orange; one brother, Roy Butler of Stanardsville; one sister, Virginia Bagby of Richmond; ten grandchildren, Alison Lineweaver, Lori Eppard, Suzanne Jarrell, Jennifer Clatterbuck, Carl "Bo" Johnson, Jackie Wayland, Sara Elmore, Charlie Elmore, Katie Butler May, and Emily May; four great-grandchildren, Annamay Judith Lineweaver, Remington Morgan VanLieu, Riley Mae Clatterbuck, and Jake Jarrell; and mother-in-law, Mae M. May.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Judith May Johnson; brothers, Chester, Delmar, Quincy, Guy and Pete Butler; and sisters, Stella Johnson, Lottie Hensley, Alice Verling and Mary Cook.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the North Pamunkey Baptist Church cemetery, conducted by Dr. Mike Hatfield, the Rev. Jeff White, and the Rev. Marvin Gobble.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 9 p.m. at the residence, 18170 Constitution Hwy, Orange.
Katie was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Her sweet spirit will live on in those she touched.

Russell R. Robertson
Russell Ray Robertson died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, after a brief illness.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Homer Robertson and Worley Robertson.
Russell was born Feb. 22, 1912, in Henry County, the son of the late Harry W. and Hattie B. Robertson.
He was a retired building contractor and real estate broker. Russell and his family moved to Charlottesville in 1954.
He was a member of the Park Street Christian Church, had been a member of the Home Builders Association, and was a charter member of the Ruritan Club of Spencer.
He is survive by his wife of 62 years, Inez Dalton Robertson; a son, Donald R. Robertson and his wife, Allison; two daughters, Carolyn R. Ross and Betty Jo Loving and her husband, Joel Loving; six grandchildren, Kristen Robertson, Jennifer and Kimberly Ross, Nicholas Gianakos, and Katherine and Andrew Loving; and two great-grandchildren, Phoenix and Tarin; a sister, Louise R. Lester of Martinsville; two brothers, Dudley Robertson and his wife, Gee, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and Wilbert Robertson and his wife, Peggy of Martinsville; sister-in-law, Mary Robertson; cousin, Mae Collins; two nephews; and seven nieces.
Visitation will be held privately at the Norris Funeral Home in Martinsville.
Graveside funeral services will be held at noon Tuesday in the Roselawn cemetery, officiated by Larry Hastings and Arthur Beam.
