Helen McKenna
Helen McKenna ended her long journey of 91 years here on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003.
She was a resident of Our Lady of Peace for the last nine years. There her Irish lilt endeared her to all and she always had an Irish joke to share if one would linger for a moment with her. This is one of her greatest legacies past down through her family, the gift to be able to share a smile and laugh at one's self.
Helen came to this country as a young woman of 19 years leaving all that she knew behind in County Leitrim, Ireland, as the daughter of Tom and Ellen Carty and four siblings, Bridgett, Patrick, Kate, and Mary. On her entry papers, she declared herself a "House Maid, " which today might be regarded as perhaps not the most clever or desirable phrasing, but to my mother and her family is her badge of courage. She crossed the seas in 1929, or thereabouts as a passenger on the Queen Elizabeth. She often told her tale. She was very sick the entire voyage and never ventured above deck until the last day. As the story goes, she told that the very first siting of her new land was the lady herself, the Statue of Liberty. Throughout her life she worked in the service of others and met her beloved husband Arthur, deceased since 1980, and they wed in 1939.
Surviving are her daughter, Peg and her husband, Chuck Lascano, her granddaughter, Maria Graff and her husband, Dan, along with her great-grandchildren, Carlyn and Jakob; grandson, Tony Lascano and his wife, Daphne; grandson, Joe Lascano and his wife, Shari; great-granddaughters, Hannah and Ashley; and a granddaughter, Gina.
Helen spent most of her life in Long Island, N.Y., and to there she will return for a Mass of the Resurrection on Saturday at Holy Family, with interment at Holy Rood.
The family will have a memorial service in her honor and to celebrate with her care givers and friends at 11 a.m. today at Our Lady of Peace.
One cannot live for 91 years without facing great sorrows and burdens to carry. This is true for Helen as well. In closing with these passing words, I share with you her strong faith and wishes with a quote from author unknown, "When you look at the years behind you, may you see only rainbows and feel only blessings." We are all thankful for Helen's presence in our lives and we know that our beloved ones are now together and sharing the years that have passed and the joys that they will continue to share with us here as always.
