Louis D. Farina Sr.
Louis D. Farina Sr., 62, of Crozet, Va., ended a courageous six year battle with cancer at his home on Wednesday, April 2, 2003, surrounded by his loving family. His spirit, good will, compassion and love for his family and friends will live on forever in their hearts.
Born in Paterson, N.J., on January 29, 1941, Lou was the son of Louis and Alice Farina, both deceased. He was a graduate of the University of Virginia where he earned an education degree and proudly played for the Virginia Cavalier basketball team.
Lou joined the faculty of the Miller School of Albemarle where he devoted his entire professional career to achieving their high standards of education and enriching the lives of countless students and faculty members. During his four decades of service at Miller School, he worked as a teacher, coach, guidance counselor, athletic director, and always a friend and mentor. He took a personal interest in every student, gently imparting his wisdom, high ideals and principles.
Through his relationship with the Miller School and through his involvement with interscholastic sports, he literally touched and shaped the lives of thousands of young men and women. A high school basketball official for 35 years, baseball umpire for 25 years, and Commissioner of the Piedmont Basketball Officials Association for 22 years, he was many times described as the best athletic official to ever wear the uniform. Officiating was a lifelong love and he was admired and respected by virtually every player, coach, and fellow official who ever crossed his path.
A devoted husband and father, Lou’s strong family commitment is unsurpassed. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Carolyn; four sons, Lou Jr., and his wife, Melissa, of Crozet, Kevin and his wife, Linda, of Palmyra, Tony and his wife, Amy, of Richmond, and Matt and his wife, Tonya of Winchester. Lou was exceptionally proud of his six grandchildren, Alex, Jack, Emily, Katie, Erin and Luke. Also surviving are his two loving sisters, Patty Ward and her husband, Walt, and Alice Bernotas and her husband, Al, both of Bethlehem, Pa.; mother-in-law, Kathleen Dollman; and brother-in-law, Bill Dollman and his wife Phyllis of Culpeper.
Although there will be no public funeral service, at Lou’s request, there will be a joyful celebration of his life at the Miller School in Crozet on Sunday, April 13, 2003, at 2 p.m. All who enjoyed the opportunity to know and appreciate Lou are welcome to attend this informal gathering.
In lieu of flowers of other remembrances, it was Lou’s heartfelt desire that donations be made in his memory to the Miller School of Albemarle, Hospice of the Piedmont, or the Martha Jefferson Cancer Care Center.
