Helen J. Sheler
Helen Jenkins Sheler, 77, died Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at a local hospital.
She was preceded in death by her parents, "Boss" and Daisy Jenkins; her two husbands, Robert Jenkins and George H. Sheler; three brothers, and one sister.
Survivors include four daughters, Leona Powell of Charlottesville, Mary Ellen Jenkins of Schuyler, Linda Caul and her husband, Rick, and of Scottsville, Sherry Sheler of Schuyler; two sons, Michael Jenkins and his wife, Lorrine, of Keswick, and Ronald Sheler of Schuyler; one sister, Myrtle Meadows; one brother, "Bill" Jenkins, both of Stanley; five grandchildren, Michael Jenkins, Jr. and his friend, Tammy, Harry Jenkins, Jason Sheler and his wife, Kathy, James and Joseph Caul; four great-grandchildren, Samantha, Kenneth and Amber Jenkins and Skylar Sheler.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Thacker Brothers Funeral Home, Scottsville, with the Rev. Edwin L. Leake Jr., officiating. Interment
will follow at Rehoboth Church cemetery, Schuyler.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Joseph J. Slowik
Joseph J. Slowik, 83, of Malvern, Madison County, died Thursday, April 3, 2003, in the University of Virginia Medical Center.
Born August 22, 1919, in Baltimore, Md., he was the son of the late John Slowik and Antoinette Winiecea Slowik; and was the husband of the late Percy Barrett Sheats Slowik.
He had a career in the U.S. Civil Service, retired in 1974, from the Navy Marine Exhibit Center in Washington, D.C. He helped design and build exhibits for display in the Washington Navy Yard and many cities in the United States. Upon retirement, he moved to Shelby where he and his wife Percy, restored an old farmhouse. He was a member of the Madison Presbyterian Church, Madison County Lions Club, and the Disabled American Veterans. He served as an infantryman in the U.S. Army in World War II in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre. While participating in the Liberation of the Philippines he was severely wounded in May of 1945, during the operation on the Island of Mindanao. Among his decorations he received the Philippine Liberation Medal, The Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
He is survived by a sister, Katherine Cherry of Oakland, Md., and many friends.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 7, 2003, at Culpeper National cemetery, conducted by the Rev. John Storey.

Nellie B. Williams
Nellie Berry Williams, 70, of Aroda, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at the Mountain View Nursing Home.
Born October 11, 1932, in Madison County, she was the daughter of the late Lancelot Berry and Nora Knighting Berry; and wife of the late Hubert Prentice Williams.
Mrs. Williams was a member of Good Hope Baptist Church. She was a former Madison County Sheriff’s Dispatcher, former employee of Comdial in Charlottesville and for many years was a Madison County School substitute teacher.
She is survived by three daughters, Pamela Williams Tickel and her husband, Dan of Richmond, Shelia Williams of Aroda, and Sharon Williams Hoeckelman and her husband, John of Wolftown; three brothers, Earl Berry of Radiant, Roger Lee Berry of Missouri and Vernon Berry of Waynesboro; one sister, Holly Watkins of Maryland; and one grandchild, Joshua Williams of Aroda. She was also preceded in death by one brother, Fred Berry; and one sister, Isabel Hahn.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 5, 2003, at the Good Hope Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. John Greene with interment in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the Preddy Funeral Home, Madison.

James T. Clarke
James Thomas Clarke, 84, of Charlottesville, died Friday, April 4, 2003, at the Cedars Nursing Home.
Born in North Garden on July 14, 1918, he was the son of the late Hartwell Gary Clarke and Lucile Owen Clarke. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Harwell P. Clarke, Samuel G. Clarke; and one sister, Mildred Larsen.
Jim was a Second Lt. in the Air Force during World War II, the owner of Monticello Brick Yard and was associated with various automobile dealerships in the area. He was retired from the MCL Corporation.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ruby Magann Clarke; one brother, Charles Owen Clarke and his wife, Lorraine, of Florida; five children, James "Tom" T. Clarke Jr., and his wife, Johnnie, of Richmond, Dr., Stephen M. Clarke and his wife, Carol, of North Garden, Sarah Midkiff and her husband, Kyle, of Covington, Gayle Stephens and her husband, Scott, of Wilmington, N.C., Patricia Garner and her husband, Tommy, of Lynchburg; 10 grandchildren, Stephen Clarke Jr., Kyle Midkiff III., Greg Garner, Daniel Garner, Ross Garner, Amy Higgins and her husband, Chad, Ashley Clarke, Karen Midkiff, Sarah Catherine Clarke, Lauren Ranson and her husband, Patrick; and a step-granddaughter, Christyanna Stephens.
A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in Riverview cemetery with the Reverend Gary Robbins officiating. A celebration of Jim’s life will follow the graveside service at the home of Steve and Carol Clarke in North Garden.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to the Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, 1901 Thomson Road, Charlottesville, Va. 22903.

Bobby T. Gibson
Bobby Thomas Gibson, 62, of Keswick, died Sunday, April 6, 2003, in a local hospital.
Born in Charlottesville, on February 17, 1941, he was the son of the late Clyde Amos Gibson and Myrtle Virginia Marsh Gibson.
Mr. Gibson was a member of Zion United Methodist Church and was employed by Lexis Law Publishers.
He is survived by his wife, Wanda Gayle Dudley Gibson of Keswick; one son, Brandon Thomas Gibson of Keswick and his girlfriend, Amanda Spain; two brothers, Clyde A. Gibson Jr., and his wife, Margaret, of Greenwood, Harold F. "Phil" Gibson and his wife, Becky, of Charlottesville.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Teague Chapel with the Reverend Will Montgomery officiating. Interment
will follow in Holly Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Maxine Ix Tyler
A graveside memorial service for Maxine Ix Tyler, is planned for 10 a.m. Saturday, April 12, 2003, at Monticello Memorial cemetery, to celebrate the life of Maxine who passed away, September 5, 2002, in Pennington, N.J.
Born in Charlottesville, she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ix.
She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Robert P. Tyler Jr.; two daughters and son-in-laws, Kim and Gary Smith, of Pennington, N.J., and Tracy and Michael Maurer, of Sturart, Fla. She is also survived by three brothers, Frank Ix, of Creskill, N.J., Thomas Ix, of Lexington, N.C., and Jerome Ix, of Charlottesville.

Robert S. Coleman Sr.
Robert S. Coleman Sr., 92, of Unionville, Va., died Sunday, April 6, 2003, in an automobile accident.
Born July 28, 1910, in Orange County, he was the husband of the late Dorothy H. Coleman.
He is survived by a daughter, Charlotte June Faulconer of Clifton Park, N.Y.; a son, Robert S. Coleman Jr., and his wife, Sandy, both of Unionville, Va.; a brother, James P. Coleman Sr. of Unionville, Va.; a sister, Mildred Barthow of Wheaton, Md.; grandchildren, Robert E. Faulconer of Rhoadesville, Va., Michael Bradley Faulconer of San Francisco, Calif., Allison L. Faulconer of Scranton, Pa., Barbara Koontz of Culpeper, Va., Lori S. Coleman of Culpeper, Va., Melissa Coleman of Madison, Va., and Jamie Coleman of Unionville, Va.; and great-grandchildren, Eric and Kassie Faulconer, Hunter Koontz, and Bailey Coleman.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 10, 2003, with at the Johnson Funeral Home, Locust Grove, Va., with the Rev. Linda Ray officiating. Burial will take place in Oakwood cemetery, Unionville, Va.
Pall bearers will be Robert Faulconer, Bill Hume, C.S. Hume, Brad Faulconer, Jamie Coleman, Stearns Coleman Jr., E.V. Baker and Gary Waugh.
Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at the funeral home.

Richard W. Fitzgerald
Richard Wayne Fitzgerald of Charlottesville, departed this life on Sunday, April 6, 2003, at his home in Albemarle County.
He was the son of the late Herman and Mary Fitzgerald. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Herman Massie and Gene Fitzgerald.
Mr. Fitzgerald was retired from Martha Jefferson Hospital after 25 years of service.
He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Alice Hunt Fitzgerald; one daughter, Tammy Denise Carter and her husband, Daniel of Charlottesville; two sons, Gregory Alan Hunt of Keswick and Glenn Alan Hunt and his wife, Anne of Devin, Texas; three grandchildren, Elizabeth, Ashley and James Hunt all of Devin, Texas; two brothers, Robert Fitzgerald and his wife, Sharon, of Kansas, William Fitzgerald and his wife, Kathy of Newport News; two sisters, Elsie Moore and her husband, Mert, of Lovingston, Lily Tyler and her husband, JR. of Schuyler; also a close family member Ronnie Fitzgerald and his wife, Vicky of Schuyler.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in the Teague Chapel with Pastor Pete Hartwig officiating. Interment

James Rosser "Gimpy" Harlow, 64, of Charlottesville, died Monday, April 07, 2003, at his residence.
A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, April 10, 2003 at 2 p.m. at the First Christian Church in Charlottesville by Mr. Frank Forehand. Interment
will follow at the Riverview cemetery.

Jane Hetler
Jane Hetler, 83, of Wintergreen, Va., passed away comfortably in her home on Saturday April 5, 2003.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Kyle Lynn; her granddaughter and her husband, Stuart and Paul Spicer; and her grandson, Hunter Lynn.
Born June 1, 1919, in Brawley, Calif., she studied dance at the University of Arizona and later married
her husband, the late Captain Carson Hetler. As a military couple, the two traveled extensively, living in Florida, Hawaii, Philadelphia, and Northern Virginia. Later retiring in Stoney Creek at Wintergreen, where they lived for 14 years the couple was among the first in the developing community and met a network of friends through active participation in neighborhood associations and weekly bridge groups.
As a loving mother, grandmother, and devoted friend, Jane touched the lives of all who knew her. With her strong determination, warm smile, and love of life she, will be greatly missed. A celebration of Jane’s life will be held on April 19 at 2 p.m. at her home in Stoney Creek.
