Wilmer Knighting Jr.
Wilmer Lee Knighting Jr., 72, of Madison, died Saturday, April 5, 2003, at the Autumn Care of Madison.
Born August 24, 1930, in Criglersville, he was the son of the late Wilmer Lee Knighting Sr., and Nina Shifflett Knighting.
Mr. Knighting was a Marine veteran of the Korean War and loved to hunt and fish.
He is survived by one daughter, Linda McPeak and her husband, Gary of Madison; one son, Wilmer Lee Knighting III, of Madison; three brothers, Leroy Knighting and Bobby Knighting, both of Criglersville, and Homer Knighting of Greene; one sister, Sylvia Utz of Criglersville; three grandchildren, Daniel Lloyd Jr., Kevin Lee Knighting, and Brian Edward Knighting, all of Madison.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at the Criglersville cemetery, conducted by Mr. McKinley Jenkins.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Preddy Funeral Home in Madison.
Rita C. Lowry
Rita Celestia Janson Lowry, formerly of Charlottesville, Va., passed away Friday, March 7, 2003.
She was born January 11, 1916, in Canton, Ohio, daughter of the late Otto Albert Janson and Elizabeth Krebs Janson.
She is survived by her son, William Lowry and daughter-in-law, Suzanne Lowry; one sister, Helen Smith of Canton, Ohio (recently deceased); and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Victor C., Raymond T., Pal C., Herman J., and Leon A.; and two sisters, Mary M. Kane and Gertrude Coy.
Rita attended school in Canton, graduating from McKinley High School there in 1934; she also attended St Mary’s Business school in Canton. After her marriage she resided in several different places, among then Athens, Ohio, 1942-43; Belpre, Ohio, 1946-47; Kent, Ohio, 1948-50; Columbus, Ohio, 1950-55; Charlottesville, Virginia, 1955-98; and Logan, UT (1998-present). In Charlottesville she worked at different times, for Miller and Rhoads, The Daily Progress, and Lewis Produce Company. She was a member of Holy Comforter Catholic Church in Charlottesville.
Interment will be in Monticello Memory Gardens, Charlottesville, Va., at a graveside service on April 14, 2003, with Father Dennis Murphy officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Holy Comforter Catholic Church or the Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad. The family would like to thank the following for their loving and professional care while Rita was living in Charlottesville: Our Lady of Peace Retirement Community; The University of Virginia Hospital; Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad; and friends and neighbors.
Thomas A. McClung
Thomas A. McClung, 76, of Mohegan, Rd., Charlestown, R.I., died Sunday, April 6, 2003, at South County Hospital, Wakefield, R.I.
He was the husband of Elizabeth Principe McClung and the former husband of the late Doris Milow McClung. Born in Alexandria, Va., a son of the late Roy A. and Mildred A. Jennings McClung.
He lived in Brookfield, Conn., before moving to Charlestown, R.I., in 1989. He was a manager for Perkin-Elmer Corporation in Danbury, Conn., for 30 years before retiring in 1988. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in World War II.
Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Paul McClung of North Kingstown, R.I., and Timothy McClung of West Redding, Conn.; a daughter, Patricia Yankee of Norwalk, Conn.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was the brother of the late Marie Wood.
The funeral will be held Wednesday, at 11 a.m. in the Fagan Funeral Home, 825 Boston Neck Rd., North Kingstown, R.I. Burial with military honors will be in Rhode Island Veterans Memorial cemetery, Exeter, R.I.
Hugh Neel McClure
Hugh Neel McClure, 84, of 1254 Stuarts Draft Highway, Staunton, passed away Saturday, April 5, 2003, at Oak Hill Nursing Home.
Mr. McClure was born December 8, 1918, in Staunton, a son of the late Hugh and Rossie Neel McClure.
Hugh retired from Dupont in 1985 as an accountant. He attended Dunsmore Academy and Washington and Lee University. He enjoyed playing drums in big bands, the out of doors, and animals.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Dibble McClure; and two cousins, Edward Donald McClure and Ann McClure Swecker, both of Stuarts draft.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 12, 2003, at the Church of the Good Shepherd at Folly Mills, 809 Lee Jackson Highway (Route 11) by the Rev. Barbara Taylor.

Anneliese Elizabeth Muscari, 80, of Charlottesville, died Monday, April 7, 2003, at a local hospital.

Shirley Radicchi
Shirley Blevins Sheets Jeffries Radicchi, 79, of Louisa, died Saturday, April 5, 2003.
She was the daughter of the late Elmer Odell Blevins and Mayme Blanche Barker Blevins and was known as The Flower Lady of Doctors Road, as Granny by her neighbors and as Betty Boop by her friends.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth Sheets Jr., and Barbara of Shelby, N.C., Gerald Sheets and Regina of Fredericksburg, Va., and James "Boo" Jeffries Jr., and Wendy of Boyce, Va.; daughters and sons-in-law, Ruth Harper and Sandy of Manassas, Va., Joan Dutton and Terry of Marion, Va., Judy Sheets of Earlysville, Va., and Diane Brooks of Louisa, Va.; brother, Ira Douglas Blevins of Culpeper, Va.; sisters, Frances Rembert of Alexandria, Va., Sue Reynolds of Bedford, Ind., Lue Sheets of Sterling, Va., Edith Bibb of Bismark, N.D., Lois Elliot of Sterling, Va., 17 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and baby Radicchi.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Kenneth Sheets Sr., in 1954; James Jeffries Sr., in 1999, and John Radicchi in 1982; and a granddaughter, Kathleen Sheets.
The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Woodward Funeral Home, Louisa, where funeral services will be conducted by Professor Kenneth Sheets Jr., Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at 11 a.m. Interment
will be in Hillcrest cemetery, Louisa.
Harriet R. Rieman
Harriet Rigby Rieman of Wilmington, N.C., died Monday, April 7, 2003, in her home.
She was born in Charlottesville, Va., on January 27, 1927, the daughter of the late Harriet Gordon Rigby and George Lawrence Rigby.
Mrs. Rieman graduated St. Margaret’s School, Tappahannock, Va., and attended The College of William and Mary. She was employed during the late 1940’s at the University of Virginia Hospital where she met her husband. She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Wilmington, N.C. She volunteered for many years at the New Hanover Regional Medical Center and was a member of the Cape Fear Garden Club.
Mrs. Rieman was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert Fletcher Rieman, M.D.; her son, Gilbert Fletcher Rieman Jr.; and her sister, Mary Elizabeth Hamrick.
Surviving are her four children, Nancy Cook and her husband, John, of Chatam, N.J., Lawrence Rieman and his wife, Jeanne, of Wilmington, N.C., Betsy Forrest and her husband, Dick, of Hillsborough, N.C., and Harriet Beauchamp and her husband, David of Wilmington, N.C.; her daughter-in-law, Harriet Rieman; nine grandchildren, Jason, Matthew Sarah, Brad, Allie, Gretchen, Rieman, Garland and Chris.
A funeral service will take place at St. James Episcopal Church, 25 South Third Street, Wilmington, N.C., at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2003. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
A graveside service will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 10, 2003, at Riverview cemetery, Charlottesville, under the direction of Hill & Wood Funeral Home, Charlottesville.

Richard E. Roberts
Richard Emmett Roberts, 65, formerly of Buckingham County, and most recently of Glen Allen, Lake Gaston, and Bracey, Va., died Monday, April 7, 2003.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Allan and Ruby S. Roberts; and his father-in-law, Marvin L. Ragland Sr.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Ethel L. Roberts; his daughters, Deborah and her husband, Joseph Britt, and Sandra and her husband, Guy Powell; his grandchildren, Amanda Powell Dylan and Jesse Britt; his brother, David Roberts; his-mother-in-law, Lucy S. Ragland; and numerous extended family members.
Mr. Roberts was employed by Richmond Refrigeration, Inc. He was a member of Good Shepard United Methodist Church.
His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home’s Stapled Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Road, where the family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., and where funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. Interment
will be private.

Gleason Toms Sr.
Gleason Dewey Toms Sr., 78, of Charlottesville, died Sunday, April 6, 2003.
Mr. Toms was born November 23, 1924, in Covesville, Va., son of the late Caskie N. Toms and Cora Toms. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Jane Lavelle Nimmo Toms; and brother, Charles E. Toms
Mr. Toms had retired from Dominick Motor Company and had served in the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his son, Gleason D. Toms Jr., and his wife, Patricia of Albemarle County; his daughter, Susan T. Soliven and her husband, Al of Albemarle County; his grandchildren, Brandon Travis Toms and his wife, Cameron of Barboursville, Brandi T. Carpenter and her husband, Scott, of Palmyra, Bethany Joy Soliven, Anna Lavelle Soliven, and David John Soliven, all of Albemarle County; his sisters, Louise T. Rittenhouse of Scottsville, Margaret Toms of Albemarle County, and Mary T. O’Connell and her husband, Finbar of Scottsville; his brother, Samuel N. Toms and his wife, Monica of Largo, Fla.; and a special friend, Mrs. Sue Smith of Palmyra.
A graveside funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at the Norville Family cemetery, Covesville, with the Rev. Katha Bollfrass and the Rev. Al Doliven officiating.
The family will receive friends at Hill & Wood Funeral Home, Charlottesville, today from 7 to 8 p.m.

Maxine Ix Tyler
A graveside memorial service for Maxine Ix Tyler, is planned for 10 a.m. Saturday, April 12, 2003, at Monticello Memorial cemetery, to celebrate the life of Maxine who passed away, September 5, 2002, in Pennington, N.J.
Born in Charlottesville, she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ix.
She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Robert P. Tyler Jr.; two daughters and son-in-laws, Kim and Gary Smith, of Pennington, N.J., and Tracy and Michael Maurer, of Sturart, Fla. She is also survived by three brothers, Frank Ix, of Creskill, N.J., Thomas Ix, of Lexington, N.C., and Jerome Ix, of Charlottesville.

Evelyn Walker
Evelyn Bryant Hix Walker, 76, of Mineral, died Sunday, April 6, 2003.
She was a daughter of the late Charlie Hix and Nettie Marsh Hix.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Beverly Jean Walker Spain and Fred Spain of Richmond; sons, Ronald Edward Walker of Mineral, Charles Norman Walker and his friend Betty Smith and her family of Goochland; brothers, Milton Hix of Water Valley, Mass., and Archie Edward "Fuzzy" Hix of Mineral; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, April 9 2003, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Woodward Funeral Home, Louisa, where funeral services will be held Thursday, April 10, 2003, at 11 a.m. Interment
will be in Hillcrest cemetery, Louisa.,

Ann Morris Whitby
Ann Morris Whitby, 65, of Bedford, died Friday, April 4, 2003, in Oakwood Manor.
She was born April 26, 1937, in Louisa County, Va., a daughter of the late Vaster Morris and Effie Rigsby Morris Byrns.
She was an advocate for the needs of handicapped people in Bedford such as making public buildings more accessible with ramps and sidewalks for the handicapped.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Caroline Morris.
Mrs. Whitby is survived by her husband, George Whitby; a brother, Irving Morris and his wife, Jane of Troy, Va.; a sister, Edna Ballard and her husband, Robert of Lynchburg; and a devoted friend, Kleber Gregory of Bedford.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 16, 2003, in the Carder-Tharp Funeral Chapel with the Rev. John R. Irvins officiating.
