Jacques J. Rappaport, of Ivy, died Sunday, March 16, 2003, in the University of Virginia Medical Center.
He was born February 8, 1912, in Belgium. He received his Ph.D., from Ghent University, Belgium. After completing his education, he remained in Belgium, and became an active member of the Resistance Forces during World War II, for which he received a Presidential Letter of Commendation from President Truman. Jacques immigrated to the United States in 1947, and his initial employment was as an interpreter on Ellis Island, as he was fluent in many languages. In 1948, he accepted a position at Smith College, where he met his future wife, Lilly Lorenz, whom he married
in 1950. In the same year, he accepted a position in the Biology Department of the University of Virginia. Many of Jacques’ students remember him fondly, returning to visit him, for many years after graduation. He was always proud of their expertise in their chosen fields, and pleased that they remembered him.
Retirement from the University of Virginia opened an opportunity to the world of volunteering. Jacques founded the Medical Alert System for people with disabilities who want to remain independent, but need a method of calling for help in an emergency. Another interest was a dental program, which would assist indigent people who need dentures. His great hope was to establish a Health Care Scholarship in memory of his wife, Lilly Rappaport, to be administered by the University of Virginia Hospital Auxiliary. Jacques will be remembered for his charitable acts, and also for his beautiful flowers, which he grew for his wife, Lilly, who predeceased him on September 5, 1990. Jacques was a resident of the Colonnades, an assisted living facility for the last two years, and continued his charitable efforts until a short time before his death.
