Holly J. Metz

Holly Janine Metz R.N., went to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 10, 2003. Holly was born April 21, 1960, in Cumberland, Md.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents; Charles Edgar and Delma Mae Barnes Symons and Nine Mongold Symons; foster grandparents; William Edward and Ruth Symons Dye; paternal grandparents, Samuel A. Sr., and Leona M. Hartman Metz.

She is survived by a loving friend, Ronnie Spencer; her parents, Ernest Luther Sr., and Norma J. Symons Metz; a brother, Ernest Luther, Jr., and his wife, Mary Jane Metz; a sister, Nancy Ellen Radcliffe and her friend, Tony Greco; a niece, the light of her life, Megan Laraine Radcliffe and her fiancée, David Riggleman; aunts and uncles, June Symons Clark, Elwood and Elizabeth Symons, Charles E. and Rebecca Symons, James Symons and his friend Dana, Ivan and Nancy Symons Crowe, Rob and Diana Symons Grady, Kay Symons Clark, Tom and Tammy Symons, Samuel A. and Margaret Metz, Paul Metz and V. Carol Metz Spiker; and numerous cousins.

Holly graduated from Valley High School and Vo-Tech Center in 1978 in the health curriculum. She worked for a year as a Unit Secretary at Miner’s Hospital Frostburg where she discovered her love of nursing. She attended Allegany Community College in Cumberland and then transferred to the Northern Virginia campus, Reston, Va., where she received her Associates Degree in nursing in 1981. She has been employed by Martha Jefferson Hospital; 20 years in the Coronary Care Step Down Unit and recently transferred to the Oncology Treatment Department. She was pursuing her Bachelor’s Degree at the Community College, Piedmont Campus in Charlottesville.

Once introduced to computers, Holly found a second love and just recently finished the programs for her 25th high school class reunion to be held in August. She made programs for the Symons reunion and enjoyed being the Emcee and greeting and photographing her many relatives.

She will be sadly missed by her many friends and relatives in the Georges Creek, Md., and in the Charlottesville, Va., areas.

The family will receive friends at Teague Funeral Service today from 7 to 9 p.m. and at the Boal Funeral Home in Barton, Md. on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at Barton United Methodist Church on Monday at 11 a.m. with the Reverend John Parks officiating. A visitation will be held at the church prior to the service from 10 to 11 a.m.

Interment will be at Laurel Hill cemetery at Moscow Mills.

Mya Nicole Morris

Mya Nicole Morris, 1, of Arrington, died Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at the University of Virginia Medical Center, Charlottesville.

She was born February 20, 2002, to Arvonti A. Morris and Brian David Coffey.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 13, 2003, at the Spring Field Baptist Church, with Elder Steve Mason officiating. Burial will follow in Springfield Baptist Church cemetery, Gordonsville.

Thomasson’s Funeral Service, Louisa, is in charge of arrangements.

Gary Allen Pugh Sr.

Gary Allen Pugh Sr., 52, of Louisa, died Tuesday, April 8, 2003.

He was a son of the late Marvin I. Pugh Sr., and Margaret Elizabeth Williams Pugh and was the owner of Kents Store Corner Market.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving in Vietnam.

Survivors include his long-time companion, Pamela Richardson; a son, Gary A. Pugh Jr., of Amelia; daughters, Angela Richardson of Louisa and Holly Herring of Fluvanna; brothers, Marvin Pugh Jr., of Louisa, Floyd Pugh of Charlottesville, Doug Pugh of Louisa, Dwight Pugh of Louisa, Mark Pugh of Louisa, Timmy Pugh of Louisa, and Richard Pugh of Louisa; sisters, Linda Layton of Pell City, Ala., and Sue Brooks of Marshall, Va.; grandsons, Dylan Herring of Fluvanna and Matthew Pugh of Amelia. He will always be remembered by the way he made us laugh.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 13, 2003, at the Woodward Funeral Home, Louisa, where memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 14, 2003. Interment icon will be in the Virginia Veterans cemetery, Amelia.

Horace W. Stephens

H. Wayne Stephens, 46, of Charlottesville, died Thursday, April 10, 2003.

Born May 8, 1956, in Albemarle County, he was the son of Horris D. and Arbutus Morris Stephens.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Patricia Morris Stephens; one son, Patrick Wayne Stephens of Virginia Tech and Charlottesville; one daughter, Lauren A. Stephens of Charlottesville; one brother, William F. Stephens and his wife, Lynda, and their children, Ahren, Meghan, and Carson, of Richmond; in-laws, Earl A. "Speedy" Morris and his wife, Hilda, of North Garden; three sisters-in-law, Pam Goodwin and her husband, Kurt, and their daughter, Grace, Linda Bryant and her husband, Dale, and their son, Eric, Susan Seiler and her husband, Cary, and their sons, Matt and Jeff; one brother-in-law, Earl Martin Morris and his wife, Nancy, and their children, Chris and his wife, Kendra, Ken and his friend, Nicole, Dana and her husband, Rip, and Keith; friend and co-worker, Randi Wescoat; and lots of other wonderful friends and family.

Wayne was the manager at the Ivy Landfill. He was an avid hunter who took it very seriously and loved farming.

Funeral services are incomplete.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Crozet Baptist Church, 5804 St. George Avenue, Crozet, Virginia 22932.

Teague Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

James M. Broan

James Martin Broan, 55, of Madison, Wis., died Thursday, April 10, 2003, at his residence.

Born January 3, 1948, in Charlottesville. He was the son of the late Wilma Sams Broan and Robert A. Broan of Charlottesville.

He is also survived by his three sons, Andrew Broan, of Madison, Wis., Marty and Alex Broan, of Charlottesville; two sisters, Janet "JoJo" Clarke of Richmond, Va., and Carol Sober of Richmond, Va.

A graveside funeral service will be held at a later date.

Teague Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Elsie K. Dunn

Elsie Katherine Dunn, 84, died Saturday, April 12, 2003, at Winterhaven.

Born October 28, 1918, in Bland, Va., she was the daughter of James Thomas Dunn and Annie Kegley Dunn.

Miss Dunn attended Radford College where she received her teaching certificate. She taught in a one room school at Arrowhead from 1937-1940. She was later employed by Michie Company as an editor from August 1940 until her retirement in January 1982.

Among her interests, Miss Dunn enjoyed travels to Europe, Mexico, Canada, and much of the United States. She was an avid reader and was also an expert at crossword puzzles.

Miss Dunn was preceded in death, by her parents; and three brothers, J.T., Paul, and Julian Dunn. She was also preceded by her life-long friend, Catherine Harvey.

Surviving is her sister Elizabeth "Libby" Bird of Bland, Va.; five nieces; four nephews; and devoted friends, Vicki Williams and the Harvey family.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, April 14, 2003, at Hill & Wood Funeral Chapel. Burial will be held 1 p.m. at the family cemetery in Bland, Va. on Wednesday, April 15th.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1490 Pantops Mountain Place, Suite 200, Charlottesville, Va. 22911

Eula Mae Glass

A funeral service for Eula Mae Buford Glass, will be held at 2 p.m. today, April 13, at Hinton Avenue United Methodist Church with the Reverend Edward A. Hopkins officiating. Interment icon will follow at Riverview cemetery.

Richard Gibson Sr.

Richard Allen Gibson Sr., 68, of Gordonsville, died Friday, April 11, 2003, at his residence.

Born December 8, 1934, in Leominster, Mass., he was a son of the late Paul Irving Gibson and Emma Setzer Gibson. He was the husband of the late Frances Caroline Gibson.

Mr. Gibson was retired from the United States marine corps with over 20 years of service and was a member of the Gordonsville V.F.W.

He is survived by one daughter, Susan Ann Bywaters of Gordonsville; a son, Richard A. Gibson Jr., and his wife, LuAnn, of Gordonsville; two brothers, Jimmy Gibson, of Mass., Donnie Gibson, of Mass.; two sisters, Dottie Brockelman, of Mass., Nina Wilson, of New Hampshire; three grandchildren, Leslie Gibson, of Lake Monticello, Christina and Brandon Bywaters, of Gordonsville; and a great-grandchild, Avery Herring of Lake Monticello.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Red Gibson; and a sister, Ester Maple.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 15, 2003, at Preddy Funeral Chapel in Gordonsville, with interment to follow in Maplewood cemetery with Military Honors provided by Culpeper American Legion Post 330. Pastor Carmon Hartsfield will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. on Monday evening at the funeral home.

Alvis W. Grant

Alvis Wesley Grant, 81, of Shipman, died Friday evening, April 11, 2003, at the Lovingston Health Care Center.

Born September 21, 1921, in Nelson County, he was the son of the late William Henry Grant and Lena Thompson Grant. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Mangus Grant, James Preston Grant, William Carlton Grant and Douglas Grant; and a sister, Blanche Fields.

He was a retired Construction Superintendent and a member of Antioch Pentecostal Holiness Church at Shipman.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Myrtle Virginia Coffey Grant; three sons, Charles W. Grant and his wife, Heather, of Amherst, James A. Grant Sr., and his wife, Frances, of Shipman and Larry W. Grant and his wife, Shirleen, of Stafford; one daughter, Joan Johnson and her husband, Mike, of Lynchburg; one sister, Lucretia Keister, of Staunton; 13 grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A service will be held Tuesday, April 15, 2003, at 7 p.m. at Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel in Lovingston, with the Rev. Nancy Grant officiating with interment in the Grant Family cemetery at Shipman.

The family will receive friends following the service until 9 p.m. and suggest that memorials take the form of donations to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1490 Pantops Mountain Place, Suite 200, Charlottesville, Va. 22911.

Jane Hetler

Jane Hetler, 83, of Wintergreen, Va., passed away comfortably in her home on Saturday, April 5, 2003.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Kyle Lynn; her granddaughter and her husband, Stuart and Paul Spicer; and her grandson, Hunter Lynn.

Born June 1, 1919, in Brawley, Calif., she studied dance at the University of Arizona and later married her husband, the late Captain Carson Hetler. As a military couple, the two traveled extensively, living in Florida, Hawaii, Philadelphia, and Northern Virginia. Later retiring in Stoney Creek at Wintergreen, where they lived for 14 years the couple was among the first in the developing community and met a network of friends through active participation in neighborhood associations and weekly bridge groups.

As a loving mother, grandmother, and devoted friend, Jane touched the lives of all who knew her. With her strong determination, warm smile, and love of life she, will be greatly missed. A celebration of Jane’s life will be held on April 19 at 2 p.m. at her home in Stoney Creek.

Horace W. Stephens

Rawleigh Taylor Jr.

Rawleigh William Downman Taylor Jr., 82, of Colonial Beach, formerly of Richmond and Orange, died Friday, April 11, 2003, in Colonial Beach.

Born December 31, 1920, in Charlottesville, he was the son of the late Rawleigh W.D. Taylor Sr., and the late Evelyn S. Taylor.

He was preceded in death by, his first wife, Evelyn P. Taylor; and a son, Rawleigh W.D. Taylor III.

Mr. Taylor was a graduate of Woodberry Forest School, V.M.I., where he served as a Major in the U.S. Army in World War II and retired from the C.I.A.

He is survived by his wife, Julia T. Taylor, of Colonial Beach; one son, John S. Taylor and his wife, Nancy Taylor, of Richmond; four grandchildren, Rawleigh W.D. Taylor IV, John Spencer Taylor Jr., Thomas Vincent Maddi Taylor and Evelyn Marie Taylor, all of Richmond.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, April 15, 2003, at 2 p.m. from St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Orange with interment in Graham cemetery with full Military Honors conducted by American Legion Post 330 of Culpeper. The Rev. Scott Hennessy and the Rev. Hill Brown will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Rawleigh and Evelyn Taylor Scholarship Fund, C/O Woodberry Forest Station, P.O. Box 402, Woodberry Forest, Va. 22989.
