Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Martin Beirne

Martin Beirne, 50, of San Marcos, Texas, and Spring Lake, N.J., and a former resident of Charlottesville, Va., died Monday, June 16, 2003, at his home in Texas.

For many years Mr. Beirne worked in the publishing business in a variety of capacities including advertising director for The World of Hibernia and publisher of Securities Industry Daily, both in New York.

A graduate of the Hill School in Pottstown, Pa., he was secretary of his class alumni association. He also was an alumnus of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and a member of the Yale Club in New York. He was a talented writer, pianist, singer and composer. Beloved by his extended family and many friends, he is deeply missed.

He is survived by his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Donald P. Beirne of Spring Lake, N.J.; a sister and brother-in-law, Dr. Mary Frances Beirne and Patrick Golden of Island Heights, N.J.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Donald Peter Jr., and Donna Beirne of Columbus, Ohio, Brian and Eileen Beirne, of Island Heights, and Daniel and Rebecca Beirne of Charlottesville, Va. He also leaves an aunt, Maryalice Maguire of South Belmar, N.J.; five nephews; four nieces; as well as many godchildren.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 20, 2003, at St. Catherine’s RC Church in Spring Lake. Committal will be held privately at Kensico cemetery, Valhalla, N.Y.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his name to The Hill School, Office of Development, 717 High Street, Pottstown, Pa. 19464.

Burton H. Crummett

Burton Homer Crummett, 80, of Charlottesville, died Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at his residence.

Born July 20, 1922, in Highland County, he was the son of the late Granville Jackson Crummett and Lutena Botkin Crummett.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Crummett.

He is survived by his daughter, Lilly Hunt of Crozet; three sons, Homer Crummett, Lewis Crummett, and John Crummett, all of Crozet; a sister, Mary Hunt of Washington, D.C.; two brothers, Elvin Stone Crummett and Lee Crummett, both of Charlottesville; and three grandchildren, Ronald Hunt, Darlene Hunt, and Gilbert Hunt Jr., all of Crozet.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, June 20, 2003, at Holly Memorial Gardens with Pastor David Flack officiating.

Teague Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Henry H. Herrion

Henry Howard Herrion, 88, of Gordonsville, died Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at his residence.

Born June 10, 1915, in Albemarle County, he was the son of the late henry Walter Herrion and Alma Morris Herrion, and husband of the late Dorothy Mae Rogers Herrion.

Mr. Herrion was retired from American Silk Mill in Orange and was a member of Eheart Pentecostal Holiness Church.

He is survived by four daughters, Betty Jean Thacker and her husband, Clarence, of Orange, Joyce H. Cook and her husband, David, Bonnie Dibble and her husband, Jay, all of Gordonsville, and Doris H. Gallihugh and her husband, Tommy of Barboursville; two sons, Jesse L. Herrion and his wife, Elsie, of Gordonsville, and Ronnie L. Herrion and his wife, Joan of Kents Store; two brothers, Johnny Herrion of Barboursville and Edward Herrion and his wife, Nellie of Charlottesville; four sisters, Minnie Morris and her husband, Wilbert, of Stony Point, Verda Williams, Margaret Watson, and Lottie Shifflett and her husband, Dewey, all of Barboursville; 15 grandchildren, Jesse L. Herrion Jr., Sandy Wilson, Troy Thacker, Alice Thacker, David Cook, Karen Cook, Kevin Gallihugh, Monica Weadon, Sherry Brockman, Crystal Knight, Christopher Herrion, Rhonda Herrion, Chad Herrion, Elaine Herrion, and Vincent Herrion; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 20, 2003, at Eheart Pentecostal Holiness Church with interment in the church cemetery. Pastor Buzzy Deane and Pastor Dennis Collier will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Preddy Funeral Home in Gordonsville.

Charlie James Luck

Charley James Luck of Charlottesville, Va., departed this life on Friday, June 13, 2003.

Charley was born on July 15, 1915, to the late Mr. Charley Luck and Queenie Thomas Luck.

He leaves to morn his passing, two sisters, Ms. Nellie Gross of Charlottesville, Va., and Mrs. Julia Copeland of Washington, D.C.; two brother-in-laws, Ezekiah Copeland of Washington, D.C., and Raymond Bruce of Charlottesville, Va.; a very dear friend, Ms. Sharon M. Harper and many relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 21, 2003, at the Chapel of J.F. Bell Funeral Home with the Rev. R.A. Hailes officiating. Interment icon will follow at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church cemetery, White Hall, Va.

Frances K. Mitchell

Interment for Frances Katherine Mitchell will take place at 1 p.m. today at Mount Comfort cemetery in Groveton, Va.

Alfred C. Perutelli

Alfred Charles Perutelli, 78, of Buckingham, passed away at his home on Tuesday, June 17, 2003.

He is survived by his nine children, Mike Perutelli of Prospect, Sandra Frazier and Dianna Staton of Bealton, Paula Johnson of Manassas, Freddie Perutelli, II, of Buckingham, Billy Perutelli of Powhatan, Steve Perutelli of Dyke, Robert Perutelli of Amelia and Janice Miller of Tampa, Fla.; two sisters, Diana Frederick and Mary Sundstrom of Kansas City, Mo.; a brother, Charles Perutelli of Dallas, Texas; 20 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Mr. Perutelli was retired from the U.S. Navy having served honorably for 22 years. He served in World War II, the Korean War and several other conflicts. He was a member of VFW Post 7059.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Janette I. Kramer Perutelli. May God bless their souls.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 3 p.m. in the chapel of the Virginia Veterans cemetery of Amelia.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn.

Kathryn H. Scruggs

Kathryn "Kitty" Hunt Scruggs, 81, of Charlottesville, died Monday, June 16, 2003, in a local hospital.

Born September 18, 1921, in Richmond, Va., she was the daughter of the late Raymond Alexander Hunt and Hallie Virginia Duffell Hunt. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Fulton Scruggs and a brother, Charles Hunt.

She is survived by her two sons, David C. Scruggs of Milwaukee, Wis., and Timothy F. Scruggs of Charlottesville and his fiancee, Lisa Shepherd of Madison; one sister, Thelma "Chick" Pinette of Richmond; one brother, Calvin Hunt of Virginia Beach; two grandchildren, Brantlea C. Scruggs of Los Angeles, Calif., and Emily C. Scruggs of Silver Springs, Md.; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, long-time friends, and special neighbors.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 21, 2003, at Monticello Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Teague Funeral Home.

Nickolas J. Sojka

Dr. Nickolas Joseph Sojka, Professor Emeritus of The University of Virginia, died unexpectedly Monday, June 16, 2003, in Wilmington, North Carolina.

Born June 15, 1934, in Page, Nebraska, the son of the late Walter Sojka and Anna Boguz Sojka. He was a first generation American of Polish heritage. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Casimir and Leon Sojka.

Dr. Sojka was a Director of the Farm Credit Bank of the Virginias. He retired as Professor of Medical Education after 32 years at The University of Virginia. He was founder and chairman of the Department of Comparative Medicine. Prior to his arrival at The University, he served as an Associate in Veterinary Medicine at Duke University. Before entering the fields of research and education he served with the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service in Harrisonburg, Virginia. He also practiced veterinary medicine in Storm Lake, Iowa. Dr. Sojka served as the Assistant Post Veterinarian at Fort Bragg, North Carolina and was one of the original instructors at Fort Bragg’s Special Warfare School. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Major. He received his doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Kansas State University and a Master of Science Degree in Surgery from The University of Virginia. He was a past President of the Charlottesville Kiwanis Club, Greenwood Ruritan Club and a member of the Greenwood Club. He was a member of Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church.

Dr. Sojka received numerous honors, including the 1996 Veterinary Lifetime Service Award from the Virginia Veterinary Medical Association. He was past president of the Blue Ridge Veterinary Medical Association. He holds multiple patents for equipment used in the care of animals and has been published both nationally and internationally on topics including reproduction and Animal Well Being.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Cox Sojka; his son Nickolas Joseph Sojka, Junior and his wife Lucy Purcell Sojka and their children Eleanor Purcell and Joseph Augustus of Laurinburg, North Carolina; his son Thomas John Sojka and his wife Kristie Hamlet Sojka of Earlysville, Virginia and his son Benjamin Walter Sojka of Charlottesville, Virginia. His siblings include Victoria Wills and Helen Miller both of Fort Worth, Texas; Peter Sojka and his wife Irene of Page, Nebraska; John Sojka of O’Neill, Nebraska; and Carl Sojka and his wife Mary Jane of Newman Grove, Nebraska. Many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Dr. Sojka resided on his farm, Cliffdale, in Afton, Virginia, where his passion for Animal Well Being and stewardship of the land are illustrated in all aspects of its operation. His ability for crafting local woods into wonderful creations also demonstrated his diverse talents.

The family will receive friends at Hill & Wood Funeral Home on Thursday, June 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at The University of Virginia Chapel on Friday, June 20, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Thomas Blough officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Building Fund at Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 331 Kent Rd., Charlottesville, Va. 22903 or the Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 160, Charlottesville, Va. 22902.

Frank L. Wood Jr.

A graveside funeral service for Frank L. Wood Jr., will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Monticello Memory Gardens with the Rev. David Collyer officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Charlottesville/Albemarle Rescue Squad; Monticello Little League, or the Crozet Volunteer Fire Department.

Burton H. Crummett

A graveside funeral service for Burton Homer Crummett will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Holly Memorial Gardens with Pastor David Flack officiating.

Barbara P. Holladay

Barbara Pillinger Holladay, 82, of Gordonsville, died Thursday, June 19, 2003, at her residence.

Born July 18, 1920, in Illinois, she was a daughter of the late Milton Webb Pillinger and Helen Ingwerson Pillinger. She was the wife of the late James Minor Holladay Jr.

Mrs. Holladay is survived by one daughter, Sally Ann Holladay of Richmond; two sons, David Lee Holladay of Gordonsville and James Milton Holladay of Gordonsville; one grandson, Jay Holladay of Laurel, Md.; and her three dogs, Chrissy, Jingles and Bodie.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 22, 2003, at Inglewood Farm in Gordonsville. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to Caring for Creatures, 352 Sanctuary Lane, Palmyra, Va. 22963.

Hasley "Squire" Kent

In memory of our dear friend and colleague, Hasley "Squire" Kent, we invite friends and family to attend a celebration of his life, on Saturday evening, June 21, 2003, anytime between 5 and 7 p.m., at Oyster House Antiques, 122 E. Main St. on the Downtown Mall.

Annette Hale Kirby

Annette H. Kirby, 94, of Charlottesville, passed away Thursday, June 19, 2003, at her residence.

Born February 19, 1909, in Charlottesville, Va., she was the daughter of the late John J. Hale and Annie Bell Bruffey Hale. Mrs. Kirby was also preceded in death by her husband, Gerald L. Kirby Sr., on December 13, 1988. She was preceded in death by five sisters and one brother.

Mrs. Kirby retired from Unique Gifts on 29 North where she was owner and operator for 22 years.

She was a former member of the First Baptist Church until moving her membership to Broadus Memorial Baptist Church where she was a charter member.

Surviving is one son, Gerald L. "Jerry" Kirby Jr., and his wife, Emmarene, and two grandchildren, Gerald L. "G.L." Kirby, III, and his wife, Carol, and Kevin L. Kirby and his wife, Anette; two great-grandchildren, Dallas and Cassie Kirby also survive, as well as two nieces, Barbara Pringle of Maryland and Patricia Lane of Kissimmse, Fla.; and a sister-in-law, Virginia Stinnett.

Funeral services will be held at Broadus Memorial Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 21, 2003, with the Rev. Bob Wheeler and the Rev. Eric Howell officiating. Interment icon will follow at Monticello Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends at Hill & Wood Funeral Home this evening from 7 until 8 p.m.

The family would like to thank Dr. Osbourne, Dr. Goss, her caretakers, Marie Harris, Annie Simms and Katherine Lowe for their loving care.
