Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Roger William Foster

Roger William Foster, 50, of Ruckersville, passed away Tuesday at his home.

He was born March 7, 1953, a son of the late Kenneth Foster and Virginia Louise Sullivan Foster.

He is survived by his fiancee, Daisy Bailey of Ruckersville; two sons, Joseph Foster of Fluvanna and Jessie J. Foster of Ruckersville; and two daughters, Amanda L. Foster and Jacqulyn L. Foster of Ruckersville; and two stepdaughters, Dorothy Shad of Jacksonville, N.C. and Samantha Bailey of Ruckersville; a brother, Harold Foster of Northern Neck; two sisters, Jayne Pavone of Bristow and Sandra Freeman of Atlanta, Ga.; a stepsister, Eleanor Lawson of Fluvanna, and four grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Ryan Funeral Chapel in Quinque, Pastor Wendell Lamb officiating, with interment in the Mt. Paran cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Clarence R. Garland

Clarence Richard Garland, 65, of Troy, died Monday, August 4, 2003, at his residence. He was born January 10, 1938, in Albemarle County, and was a son of the late Dallas Garland and Chassie Carter Garland.

He was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church, Cismont.

Mr. Garland is survived by his wife, Leona Garland of Troy; two daughters, Terry Washington and Amy Garland, both of Charlottesville; two sons, Eric Washington and Benjamin Garland, both of Troy; two brothers, Thomas Garland of Charlottesville and Robert Garland of Gordonsville; five sisters, Myrtle White, Elizabeth Yates, Mildred Mitchell, Mary Harris, all of Keswick and Chassie Hayes of Detroit, Mich.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Ralph Carter, Dallas Garland Jr., Daniel Garland and two sisters, Sally Turner and Katherine Carr.

The family wants to thank the Hospice of the Piedmont for all of their concern and help given to our loved one during our time of need.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, August 8, 2003, at the Springfield Baptist Church, Troy, with interment in the church cemetery. The Rev. Dr. R.A. Johnson will officiate.

The family will receive friends following the funeral service.

Preddy Funeral Home, Gordonsville, is in charge of arrangements.

James S. Koczan

James S. Koczan, 67, of Scottsville, died Tuesday, August 5, 2003, in Houston, Texas.

He was born October 12, 1935, in Hopelawn, N.J. He was the son of Katherine Koczan and the late James E. Koczan.

Jim retired from Armstrong Furniture.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia L. Koczan of Scottsville; his son, Danny Koczan and his wife, Jenny, of Scottsville; daughter, Cindy Fleming and her husband, Gene, of Palmyra; daughter, Wendy Webster and her husband, Carl, of Madison Heights; daughter, Laura Loftus and her husband, T.J., of Richwood, Texas; son, Stephen David and his wife, Julie, of New Canton; son, Todd David of Wildersville, Tenn.; his sister, Honey Lamela and her husband, Joe; his brother, Charles Koczan and his wife, Elsa, all of N.J. He is survived by his grandchildren; Jimmy and his wife, Pam, Aime' and Leslie Koczan, Angie, Adrianna and Samuel Fleming, Jessica Webster, Joshua and Benjamin Loftus, Tim and Jenna David, Terri Ann David, and great- grandchildren, Brittney, Tori and Leuk Koczan, and Dakota Woody.

Jim was also survived by his special friends, Judy and David Breeden and his faithful poochie, "Ruffles."

In lieu of flowers, donations maybe made to the Scottsville Volunteer Rescue Squad in memory of James Koczan.

Arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Penny Nelson

Penny N. Nelson, 77, of Charlottesville died Wednesday, August 6, 2003, at Rosewood Village, a local assisted living facility.

Born July 9, 1926, in Charlottesville, she was the daughter of the late George F. Nimmo and Annie E. Thomasson Nimmo. She was also preceded in death by six brothers, Charles Nimmo, George Nimmo, Lewis Nimmo, Henry Nimmo, Robbie Nimmo, and Homer Nimmo.

She was a bank officer at Peoples Bank in Charlottesville for many years and was a member at Christ Episcopal Church. She was also a member of the DAR Albemarle Chapter in which she was a very active participant in the naturalization ceremony at Monticello.

She is survived by her husband’s two sons, Hugh T. Nelson IV and his wife, Stephanie, of Atlanta, Ga., and Thomas P. Nelson Jr. and his wife, Poppet, of Middlebrook; two sisters, Anna Hammer of Charlottesville, Catherine Morris of Earlysville; one brother, Murray Nimmo of Washington, D.C.; five grandchildren, James Richard Nelson, Kimberly Jo Nelson, Capt. Thomas P. Nelson III, Sarah Elizabeth Weaver, and Jennifer Lauren Nelson; and one great-grandchild, Lauren Michelle Weaver.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 9, in the Christ Episcopal Church with the Rev. Jeffrey Fishwick officiating.

Interment will be private at a later date in the Riverview cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Christ Episcopal Church.

Dorothy Putnam

A memorial service for Dorothy Putnam will be held at 2:30 p.m. today at Westminster Canterbury with the Rev. Whitman Dennison officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service.

Kenneth E. Via

Funeral services for Kenneth E. Via will be conducted 11 a.m. today at Prize Hill Church. Interment icon will follow in Prize Hill cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Hospice of the Panhandle, 122 Waverly Court, Martinsburg, W.Va. 25401.

Fred W. Williams Jr.

Fred W. Williams Jr, 76, of Charlottesville, died Wednesday, August 6, 2003, at his home. Arrangements with Hill and Wood Funeral Home are incomplete.

Esther Fink Bull

Esther Fink Bull passed away August 1, 2003. She was born April 2, 1920, in Mason, West Virginia.

Her parents were the late Charles H. Fink and Rosa D. Fink of Mason, WV. Mrs. Bull was a graduate of Mountain State Business College. She met Elwyn M. Bull Sr. in Point Pleasant, WV, while working at the Marietta Manufacturing Plant. They were married July 12, 1944. They lived in Charlottesville for several years before moving to Northern Va. where they were both employed by the federal government. After retirement, they moved back to Charlottesville and then to the Covenant Woods Retirement Community in Mechanicsville in 2001.

She was a lifelong, active member of the United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Bull is survived by her loving husband of 59 years; her sister, Dorothy F. Will; her son, E. Maurice Bull Jr. and his wife, Pamela Patrick, her daughter Beth L. Bull and her husband, Alfred Willyard, her granddaughter, Heather Bull; and her grandson, Andrew Willyard. She will be remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends for her generous heart and exuberant personality.

A memorial service will be held at the Covenant Woods Retirement Community on today, August, 5, 2003, at 4 p.m.

A service at Shady Grove United Methodist Church in Mechanicsville will follow later in the week. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Shady Grove Church, 8209 Shady Grove Road, Mechanicsville, VA

William D. Crawford

William D. Crawford, 72, of Lake Monticello, formerly of Roslyn, Long Island, Ny.; died August 3, 2003, in a local hospital. Born January 24, 1931 in Brooklyn, Ny.; he was the son of the late David A. and Mary Addleman Crawford.

Mr. Crawford retired as a police officer. He was a member of the Hempstead New York Knights of Columbus, The Holy Name Society of the Police, and was a life member of the Lake Monticello Fire and Rescue.

He is survived by his wife Margaret D. Crawford; one son, William A. Crawford of North Carolina; two daughters, Cathy A. Skop of Texas and Mary A. Geoffrion of Arkansas; eight grandchildren and one great- grandchild.

A memorial mass will be conducted 11 a.m. today at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Lake Monticello Fire and Rescue, 10 Slice Court, Palmyra, VA 22963.

Anna F.Dunnivan

Funeral services will be held today at 11 a.m. at the Ryan Funeral Chapel in Quinque, with interment in the Etlan cemetery, Pastor Wendell Lamb will be officiating.

Clarence R. Garland

Clarence Richard Garland, 65, of Troy, died Monday, August 4, 2003, at his residence. He was born January 10, 1938, in Albemarle County and was married to Leona Garland of Troy. Arrangements with Preddy Funeral Home, Gordonsville are incomplete.

Evelyn May Garver

Evelyn May Garver, 80, of South Pasadena, Fl.; died Friday, August 1, 2003.

Born March 30, 1923 in Nelson County, she was a daughter of the late Guy Wright and Myrtle Stewart Wright. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Blair F. Garver.

She is survived by her daughter Freda Miller, of Tierra Verde, Fl.; a son Jacob Garver of Leesburg, Fl.; a sister, Margaret Smith of Shipman, two grandchildren Matthew K. Miller and Christopher R. Miller both of Tierra Verde, Fl.; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday August 7, 2003, at Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel in Lovingston, with Rev. John P. Campbell officiating with interment to follow in Ridgecrest Church cemetery in Lovingston.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Raymond F. Gentry Jr.

Raymond F. Gentry Jr., 80, of Schuyler, died Monday, August 4, 2003.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond F. Gentry Sr., and Blanch Sprouse Gentry, his wife, Virginia Kidd Gentry and a son, Ray E. Gentry.

Survivors include three brothers, Carl Gentry of Massachusetts, Alvin and Clifford Gentry, both of Scottsville; three sisters, Marie Newton of Scottsville, Dora Jones of Esmont, and Lily Bush of Delaware; a daughter-in-law, Marianne K. Gentry, and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Gentry served in the U.S. Army during WW II, he was a recipient of the Bronze Star.

A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, at the Gentry Family cemetery (route 602), Schuyler, with the Rev. James C. Jetton officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. this evening at Thacker Brothers Funeral Home, Scottsville.

Carter S. Drake Goad

Carter Stubbs Drake Goad, 56, of Lexington, died Thursday, July 31, 2003, at the University of Virginia Hospital.

She was born March 12, 1947, in Lynchburg, daughter of the late William Robert Stubbs and Mary Jane Pettyjohn Stubbs. She was a member of Lexington Presbyterian Church and the Classical Association of Virginia. A former president of the C.A.V.; she also received that organizations Angela Lloyd Davis award for distinguished teaching and for contributions to the field of Latin study.

She began her career in education in 1971, in Lynchburg, before returning to her alma mater, Lexington High School, as a Latin teacher in 1975. When Rockbridge County consolidated its high schools in 1992, she moved to RCHS, where her students repeatedly won state and national recognition for excellence in Latin and where she was honored this past spring as Rockbridge County’s " Teacher of the Year".

She is survived by her husband, Thomas Lloyd Goad Jr., of Lexington, her mother, also of Lexington, and a sister, Helen Bruce Simmons, of DeLand, Fl.

A private ceremony was held on Sunday, August 3, 2003, in Stonewall Jackson cemetery. A public memorial service in celebration of the life of Carter is planned for August 30, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Lexington Presbyterian Church.

The family suggest that in lieu of flowers, mourners contribute to their preferred local charity of civic organization in Carter Goad’s name. Arrangements by the Harrison Funeral Home, Lexington.

John R. Harlow Jr.

John R. (Pete) Harlow Jr., of Louisa Va.; died Monday, August 4, 2003.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Elton, Billy, and Joker.

He is survived by his wife, Bessie H. Harlow, his sons, Ray Harlow, Robert and his wife, Lisa Harlow, Greg and his wife Sheila Harlow, four grandchildren; his sister, Eva Williams; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today, at the Woodward Funeral Home, Louisa, Va.

Interment will follow in Macedoni United Methodist Church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, make contributions to a Louisa County rescue squad.

Jesse R. Pitts

Jesse Richard Pitts, 82, of Charlottesville, died on Saturday, August 2, 2003, in a local nursing home.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today, in the Monticello Memory Gardens with Chaplain Christopher Bowers officiating. There is no scheduled viewing of visitation.

Hill and Wood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
