Dorothy Putnam
Dorothy Jane Brega Putnam, 80, of Keswick, Va., died on Sunday, August 3, 2003, at Westminster Canterbury.
Born September 12, 1922, in Omaha, Neb., she was the daughter, of the late Howard N. Douglas and Katherine Newbranch Coffee and granddaughter, of the late Harvey Newbranch, editor and chief of the Omaha World Herald and recipient of the Pulitzer Prize.
She attended the College of William and Mary and was graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1944. She was a Kappa Kappa Gamma. She married
Capt. Richard E. Brega (U.S.N.) from Callaway, Nebraska. They were stationed in Madrid, Spain, Annapolis, Md., and Santiago, Chile where he was a Naval Attache and later retired in Long Beach, Ca. While in California Dorothy was very active in Junior League receiving a life-time service award from Family Service. Captain Brega died in 1984, and Dorothy married
Clyde Putnam, an attorney from Des Moines, La., in 1986. He died in 1996. She then moved to Charlottesville, Va., in 1997 and lived in Glenmore.
She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Hecht and her husband, Frederick of Cincinnati, Oh.; two sons, Richard Brega and his wife, Sally of Westminster, Ca., and John Brega and his wife, Kathy of Colorado Springs, Co.; six grandchildren, Gabe, Rex, Scott, Eddie, Moorea, and Sydney; one great-grandchild, Adam.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 7, 2003 at Westminster Canterbury with the Rev. Whitman Dennison officiating.
The family will receive friends following the service.

Kenneth E. Via
Kenneth Earl Via, 81, of Berkeley Springs, WV, died August 3, 2003.
Born May 1, 1922, in New Castle, Pa.; he was the son of the late James H. and Nellie Symons Via and was the husband of the late Mildred B. Via.
Mr. Via retired as a welder from Bethlehem Steel Corporation and then from ACI Recycling Corporation.
He is survived by two daughters, Sandra M. Hands and Robin Jean Fleegle, both of Berkeley Springs, one son, Carroll Dave Via of Stephens City, Va.; one brother, Donald E. Via of Baltimore, Md.; 14 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. Adopted in love, Shirley Andrezyewski and Janet Cunningham, daughters of my loving fiancée, Virginia Warfel.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at Prize Hill Church. Interment
will follow in Prize Hill cemetery. The family will receive friends, this evening from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Teague Funeral home.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Hospice of the Panhandle, 122 Waverly Court, Martinsburg, WV 25401.
Mary W. White
Mary Washington White, 91, of Howardsville, departed this life Monday, August 4, 2003.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Porter and Mary Washington; her husband, Ernest White; 1 daughter, Eva Walker; 1 son, Junius White; 1 grandson, Hampton Eubanks; 3 sisters and 4 brothers.
Survivors include her daughter, Edith Eubanks of Howardsville; 1 adopted son, Robert Henry Morris of Charlottesville; seven grandchildren, Fletcher Walker and his wife, Teresa of Charlottesville; Wilbur Eubanks, Jr. and his wife, Diane of Ft. Washington, Md., Evelyn Randolph and her husband, Russell of Schuyler, David Walker of Charlottesville, Mary Ann Eubanks of Schuyler, Michael Walker of Charlottesville and Camilla Washington and her husband Ryant of Palmyra; 13 great-grandchildren, Lawrence Randolph and his wife, Lucille, Teresa Burton and her husband, Derrick, Felicia Scott and her husband, John, Serina Goode and her husband, Delmar, Tawuan Smith and her husband, Mark, Stephanie Randolph, Kisha Hightower and her husband, John, Gregory Eubanks, Sonya Keeve, LaShawn Keeve, Markeese Eubanks, Nicholas Washingon and Christopher Washington; 14 great-great-grandchildren; 3 sisters-in-law, Ellen, Nannie, and Carrie Washington and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was a member of Mt. Alto Baptist Church, Howardsville, where a funeral service will be held today at 2 p.m. with the Reverend Joseph Jones officiating.
Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Mrs. White will lie in state 1 hour prior to the service.
Texas J. Anderson
Texas James "Tex" Anderson, 56, of Orange, Va., formerly of Pisgah Road, Princeton, died Friday, August 1, 2003, at the University of Virginia Medical Center, Charlottesville, Va., following a sudden illness.
He is survived by his mother, Liza Martin Anderson of Princeton, his son, David S. Anderson of Princeton, his sister, Freddie Sink and her husband, George, of Milton Pa., formerly of Princeton, and his companion for many years, Joyce Blankerbaker of Orange Va.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 5, 2003, from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on Athens Road in Princeton, with the Rev. Butch Damewood and Eddie Pettrey officiating.
Burial will follow in the Resthaven Memorial Park in Princeton.
Friends may call today from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

John Jones Avery
John Jones "Pete" Avery Sr., 88, of Gordonsville, died Saturday, August 2, 2003, at Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville.
He was born September 21, 1914, son of the late Edward Avery Sr. and Laura Swift Avery of Gordonsville.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Edward Avery Jr. of New York; four sisters, Laura Avery and Lorraine Coles of Washington D.C., Izetta Avery of Gordonsville and Sara Lewis of New York.
He was a devoted member of Union Baptist Church in Gordonsville, where he served diligently as a member of the Deacon Board for over 50 years and as a member of the Mass Choir. He was an Army Veteran of WWII.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife of 69 years, Mildred Trice Avery of Gordonsville; one son, John Jones Avery Jr., and wife Audrey Acty Avery of Gordonsville; one brother, Morris Avery Sr., and wife Evaden of Gordonsville; two grandsons, Roderick Avery of Washington, D.C., and Ronald Avery and wife Sheila of Gordonsville; one granddaughter, Cheryl Ross Marvray of Orange, Va.; four sister-in-laws, Ruth Avery of New York, Tennie Lewis, Julia Jackson, and Martha Harris, all of Gordonsville; two brother-in-laws; Harry Trice and wife Alberta and Mitchell Trice and wife Cardoza of Philadelphia, Pa.; special niece, Orelia Trusty, six great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 5, 2003, at Union Baptist Church in Gordonsville with interment in Woodberry cemetery. The Rev. James T. Jackson will officiate.
The body will lie in state two hours prior to the service at the church. Preddy Funeral Home, Gordonsville, is in charge of arrangements.
Martha L. Ballard
Martha L. Ballard, 79, of Crozet, died Thursday, July 31, 2003, at Augusta Medical Center, Fishersville.
She was born in Crozet, the daughter of the late Frank A. Ballard Sr. and Louise Weade Ballard.
Miss Ballard was a member of Tabor Presbyterian Church, Crozet, and a valued retired employee of Acme Visible Record.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Ida Short.
She is survived by a brother, Frank A. Ballard Jr., formerly of Crozet; a sister, Mary Lewis of Lyndhurst; a nephew, George Short and his wife, Rosalie, of Lynchburg, Va.; a niece, Marysue Todd and her husband, Beri, of Midlothian, Va.; two great-nieces, Elizabeth and Lee; three great-nephews, Burton, Hunter and Stuart; and her dear friends Roger and Paige Baber and family.
Graveside funeral services will be held at Rockgate cemetery, Crozet, at 10 a.m. today, with the Rev. Timothy T. Read officiating.
There will be no viewing or visitation at the funeral home.

Joe C. Barbour
Joe C. Barbour of Crozet, Va., departed from this life on Friday, August 1, 2003, at his residence. Joe was born in Brown's Cove, Va., on March 23, 1924, the son of the late Joseph W. Barbour and Lottie Goings Barbour.
He was a devoted member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, where he served many years as a deacon and a trustee. Joe served his country as a member of the United States Navy aboard the USS Wayne (APA-54) from 1943-1945 and received an honorable discharge. He achieved the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class and was awarded two battle stars for service in the Pacific during WWII. He was committed to his family, his church and his community.
Three siblings preceded him in death, Roosevelt W. Barbour of Crozet, Mary G. Barbour and Christine Brooks of Waynesboro.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Mattie Braxton Barbour; five children, Erick L. Barbour, Robin B. Alexander, Nadine B. Roper, Paul D. Barbour and Bonita Barbour; six grandchildren, Kara A. Crump, Keisha Barbour, Michelle R. Brown, Steven D. Barbour, Joshua R. Barbour and Robin L. Barbour; two great-grandchildren, Kayla N. Crump and Taylor M. Crump; two sisters, Beatrice Brooks and Susan Nicholas of Waynesboro, Va.; three sister-in-laws, Mary Braxton Barbour, Mabel Braxton Payne; and June Braxton Wilson; two brother-in-laws, Harry Braxton and his wife Mary, and Willie Braxton and his wife Daisy, a number of nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 6, 2003, at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Brown's Cove, Va., with the Rev. Henry Stewart officiating.
Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church cemetery, White Hall, Va. His remains will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service.
Rev. Dr. George E. Blakey, Sr.
The Reverend Doctor George Edward Blakey, Sr., 88, departed this life on July 31, 2003, at Providence Hospital in Washington, D.C.
He was born in Earlysville, Va., on April 8, 1915, to the late Squire and Harriett Blakey.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Rachel Carr Blakey, and second wife, Thelma C. Minor Blakey.
He also was preceded in death by his daughter, Olivia Wells; five brothers; William, Thomton, Aubrey, James and Carl; and two sisters, Eleanor and Cornelia.
Dr. Blakey answered the call to the preaching of the gospel at the age of fourteen.
He was a graduate of Albemarle Training School and Virginia Union University Theological Seminary, while at Virginia Union University.
He was the youth minister of Zion Union Baptist Church of Charlottesville, Va., under the leadership of the late Isaac J. Kennedy.
He was ordained in 1935 and was licensed to preach by Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Earlysville, Va.
He received his honorary doctorate degree of divinity in l987.
He was a life-long member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, where he served as a minister for many years. He also served as minister at Evergreen Baptist Church, St. John Baptist Church, and Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. He also served as minister of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church for 55 years until he retired. He served as the associate minister of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church of Washington, D.C., until his health began to fail.
He served as moderator of the Piedmont District Baptist Association as well as the secretary of the District Minister Deacons' and Laymen's Union for a number of years.
He was an active member of the Baptist Ministers Conference of Washington, D.C., and Choirs United, of Albemarle County, Va.
Dr. Blakey shared his leadership abilities in civil and social organizations.
He leaves to cherish his memories four sons, William Norman of Washington, D.C., George Edward (Lucille Golden-Blakey) of Atlanta, Ga., Arthur Leonard (Fannie) of Alexandria, Va., Carl Arnold of Washington, D.C.; seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, one niece, two nephews, and devoted friend and neighbor Mr. Alien Walker of Washington, D.C., as well as many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 5, 2003, at Zion Union Baptist Church, 1015 Preston Ave., with the Rev. James Jones officiating. Interment
will follow in Lincoln cemetery. His remains will lie in state at the church two hours prior to the service.
The family will receive friends this evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the J.F. Bell Funeral Home Chapel.

Blanche Hicks Cosner, 81, of Charlottesville, died Friday, August 1, 2003, at a local hospital.
A graveside funeral service will be held today, August 4, 2003, at 2 p.m. in the Monticello Memory Gardens with the Rev Rick Sadler officiating. There will be no formal visitation.

William D. Crawford, 72, of Palmyra, Va., died Sunday, August 3, 2003, in a local hospital.

Nancy B. Darcus
Nancy Barbour Darcus, 46, departed this life on Friday, August 1, 2003, at Martha Jefferson Hospital. She was born in Charlottesville, Va., on June 11, 1957, the daughter of Sallie Barbour of Charlottesville and the late Jeff Barbour. She was the beloved wife of Philip O Darcus.
She was a graduate of Charlottesville High School and received an associate of science degree in business administration from Piedmont Virginia Community College. She was a technical information specialist at the National Ground Intelligence Center.
She was a devoted member of Bethel Church of God In Christ, where she served in many capacities as a member of the church choir; missionary of the Bethel Church of God in Christ; Sunday School teacher; member of the Young People Willing Workers; former church secretary; pastor’s aid president; supervised the after school program; and a member of the district budget committee.
In addition to her devoted husband of twenty-one years, Philip Darcus, and her mother, Sallie Barbour, she leaves to cherish her memory a son, Philip N. Darcus, and a daughter, Denisha L. Darcus, of Charlottesville; two brothers, Franklin Barbour and his wife, Geneva, of Charlottesville, Va.; Curtis Barbour of Fredericksburg, Va.; five sisters, Lucille Brockington and Dorothy Branch of Pittsburgh, Pa., Helen M. Morton and Sally A. Barbour of Charlottesville, Va., Shirley Smith and husband Donald of Norfolk, Va.; a mother-in-law, Mary B. Darcus of Charlottesville; brother-in-laws the Rev. Gary S. Darcus and his wife, Krista, of Charlottesville, Va.; William A. Darcus and his wife, Rosita, of Waynesboro, Va.; and Donald M. Darcus and his wife, Susan, of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; sister-in-laws Bettie Christian and Anita Spivey and her husband, Jonathan, of Charlottesville, Va., Phyllis Dunlap, Corella Berlack and her husband, Keith, and Mary Moats, all of Richmond, Va.; and a host of other relatives and friends.
