Royal Lee Cousins
Royal Lee Cousins, 80, of Piney River, departed this life August 1, 2003, at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville. Born in West Virginia on January 29, 1923, he was a son of the late Joshua and Cora Boyd Cousins. Mr. Cousins was an active member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, and retired from the C&O Railroad with over fifty years of service.
He is survived by one son, Roger L. Cousins of Charlottesville; one daughter, Annabelle Cousins of Hopewell; two brothers, Douglas M. Cousins of Charlottesville and Jessie Cousins of Madison Heights; one sister, Kathryn Ferguson of Lynchburg; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many other loving relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna E. Cousins, on August 13, 1986.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, August 4, 2003, at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home by the Rev. William Webb, with burial in Mt. Pleasant cemetery. The body will lie in state at the funeral home for two hours prior to the funeral service.
Blanche Hicks Cosner
Blanche Hicks Cosner, 81, of Charlottesville, died Friday, August 1, 2003, at a local hospital.
Born September 23, 1921, in Fluvanna County, she was the daughter of the late Charles Robert Hicks and Lillie Mae Davis Hicks. She was the widow of the late Thomas Elliott Cosner. She also was preceded in death by five brothers, Tan, Clyde, John, Carroll, and Hubert Hicks, and a sister, Evelyn Britts Turner.
Mrs. Cosner is survived by one son, Thomas Wayne Cosner of Charlottesville; two grandchildren, Tracy Cosner Gardner and Michael Wayne Cosner; two great-grandchildren, Jessica Lynn Gardner and Timothy Wayne Gardner; a nephew, James Hicks, and two nieces, Doris Lindsay and Betty Chisholm.
A graveside funeral service will be held on Monday, August 4, 2003, at 2 p.m. in the Monticello Memory Gardens with the Rev Rick Sadler officiating. There will be no formal visitation.
Arrangements are handled by Hill and Wood Funeral Home.
Nancy B. Darcus
Nancy Barbour Darcus, 46, departed this life on Friday, August 1, 2003, at Martha Jefferson Hospital. She was born in Charlottesville, Va., on June 11, 1957, the daughter of Sallie Barbour of Charlottesville and the late Jeff Barbour. She was the beloved wife of Philip O Darcus.
She was a graduate of Charlottesville High School and received an associate of science degree in business administration from Piedmont Virginia Community College. She was a technical information specialist at the National Ground Intelligence Center.
She was a devoted member of Bethel Church of God In Christ, where she served in many capacities as a member of the church choir; missionary of the Bethel Church of God in Christ; Sunday School teacher; member of the Young People Willing Workers; former church secretary; pastor’s aid president; supervised the after school program; and a member of the district budget committee.
In addition to her devoted husband of twenty-one years, Philip Darcus, and her mother, Sallie Barbour, she leaves to cherish her memory a son, Philip N. Darcus, and a daughter, Denisha L. Darcus, of Charlottesville; two brothers, Franklin Barbour and his wife, Geneva, of Charlottesville, Va.; Curtis Barbour of Fredericksburg, Va.; five sisters, Lucille Brockington and Dorothy Branch of Pittsburgh, Pa., Helen M. Morton and Sally A. Barbour of Charlottesville, Va., Shirley Smith and husband Donald of Norfolk, Va.; a mother-in-law, Mary B. Darcus of Charlottesville; brother-in-laws the Rev. Gary S. Darcus and his wife, Krista, of Charlottesville, Va.; William A. Darcus and his wife, Rosita, of Waynesboro, Va.; and Donald M. Darcus and his wife, Susan, of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; sister-in-laws Bettie Christian and Anita Spivey and her husband, Jonathan, of Charlottesville, Va., Phyllis Dunlap, Corella Berlack and her husband, Keith, and Mary Moats, all of Richmond, Va.; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, August 5, 2003, at Mt. Zion First African Baptist Church, 105 Lankford Avenue, with Pastor William N. Ward Jr. officiating. Interment
will follow in Riverview cemetery.

Henry S. Holland III
Henry S. Holland III, 89, of Charlottesville, died July 31, 2003, at his residence.
He was born on February 27, 1914, in Richmond.
After marrying the late Frances Coleman Holland, he moved to Charlottesville in 1987.
Mr. Holland was a graduate of John Marshall High School. He was formerly a bookkeeper at Smith-Courtney, field auditor for the Commonwealth of Virginia, vice president and then president of the Cardwell Machine Company and president of the Virginia Manufacturers’ Association.
Among his many commentate involvements, he was chairman of the Richmond Community Chest (UGF), was on the board of governors of the United Givers’ Fund, was president of Deep Run Hunt Club, president of the Richmond Rotary Club, district governor of Rotary International, president of the Downtown Club of Richmond, president of the Richmond Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Commonwealth Club of Richmond, a member of Farmington Country Club, and a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church of Greenwood, Va.
He is survived by his son, Dr. Henry Davis Holland of Richmond; his daughter, Kable Holland Wilburn of Charlottesville; two step-daughters, Helene Harrison Ferguson Williams of Birmingham, Michigan, Channing Chase Ray of Santa Fe, N.M.; five grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one sister, Frances Holland Drinkwater of Richmond.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 9, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Greenwood.

Mary Jane Jones
Mary Jane Jones of Orange, formerly of Arlington, died Thursday, July 31, 2003, at her residence.
Born May 27, 1925, in Arlington, Va., she was the daughter of the late James Arthur Dugan and the late Ester Sellers Dugan. She and her husband were residence managers of the Heritage Hill Apartments in Orange.
Survivors include her husband, William V. Jones of Orange.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, at 10 a.m. at the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Orange, followed by a graveside service at 2 p.m. at Columbia Memorial Gardens in Arlington.
Pastor Carmon Hartsfield will officiate.
Alan H. Rosenbaum
Family and friends of Alan Rosenbaum mourn his passing on Sunday, July 27, 2003, at his home in Charlottesville. He was 70 years old. The son of Murray and Rose Rosenbaum, Alan was born in Brooklyn and attended Far Rockway High School and later graduated from Carnegie Mellon University. A lifelong printer by trade, Alan worked for twenty-five years for the Michie Company and subsequently Lexis-Nexus.
Alan was an avid reader and an accomplished woodworker. He is survived by two sons, Steven Rosenbaum of Manhattan, N.Y., and Roger Rosenbaum of Saugerties, N.Y.; two grandsons, Max and Murray Rosenbaum; and a sister, Sue Briansky of Needham, MA.

Thelma R. Underwood
Thelma Rushalean Underwood, 65, of Charlottesville, died on Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at Trinity Mission.
She was born in Charlottesville, March 27, 1938, the daughter of the late Gilmore and Thelma Underwood.
She attended Burley High School and was employed as a domestic worker. She was a loving mother and grandmother who possessed a wonderful sense of humor. Her loyalty as a friend was never in doubt and her love and special way with children was a quality to be admired.
Her survivors include two sons, Kerry M. Underwood and his wife, Kim, of Dillon, S.C., and Paul H. Underwood of Charlottesville; five daughters, Deborah Eddins and her husband, Earl, of Waynesboro, Denise Turner and her husband, John, Diane Underwood, Donna Underwood and her husband, James Randolph, and Angie Carter, all of Charlottesville; one brother, Gilmore R. Underwood Jr. of Charlottesville; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; one aunt, Janet Wicks and her husband, the Rev. Carter Wicks, of Charlottesville; and a host of cousins and other friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 4, 2003, at the J.F. Bell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Carter Wicks officiating.

Sarah F. Aheart
Sarah F. Aheart, age 87, of Palmyra died July 29, 2003, in Heritage Hall, Charlottesville.
She was born June 6, 1916, in Virginia, daughter of the late Robert Henry and Annie Brice Holland. Mrs. Aheart was the widow of Paul Lewis Aheart and was a member of Evergreen Bibleway Church.
She is survived by one brother, Walter Holland of Washington, D.C.; other nieces, a nephew, relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 3, at Evergreen Bibleway Church conducted by Elder Mason. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.
The body will lie in state at the church one hour before the service.

Gloria C. Monroe
Gloria Christine Monroe of Los Angeles, Calif.; died on Saturday, July 12, 2003 after a brief illness at the Country Villa Wilshire Nursing Home in Los Angeles.
She was born on October 10, 1923 in Charlottesville, daughter of the late Clarence B. Monroe and Josephine Seay Monroe. She was preceded in death by one brother, Clarence "Dinky" Monroe.
Gloria was educated in the Charlottesville School system where she excelled in Music and the Arts. After graduation from high school she moved to Los Angeles and pursued a successful movie career. She will be remembered for her role in several movies and TV shows. The most noted, "The Flying Nun", "Uptown Saturday Night", "Dr. Dolittle", "Mission Impossible" and she was a stand in for Dianna Ross in "Lady Sings the Blues."
She was a faithful member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church and gave her life to Christ at an early age.
Gloria is survived by one sister, Shirley M. Smith and her husband Ralph of Charlottesville; one brother, Richard H. Monroe and his wife Clarice of Ruckersville; one uncle, Harry Jackson of Charlottesville; five nieces, six nephews, several great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
Special thanks to a loving and devoted nephew, Scott Fortes of San Fernando Valley, Calif.; four devoted friends, Joyce Brewer of Fresno, Calif.; Mary Rickenbaker, Joyce Chevis and Selma Williams of Los Angeles.

Shawn Travis Roach
Shawn Travis Roach, 30, of Stanardsville died Wednesday, July 30, 2003.
He was born Dec. 12, 1972, in Charlottesville, a son of Teddy Roach of Zion Crossroads and Brenda Taylor of Stanardsville.
He is also survived by two sisters, Holly Marie Roach and boyfriend, Richard Menter of Stanardsville, and Jessie Roach of Harrisonburg; a brother, Jeremy Rinaca of Stanardsville; his maternal grandparents, Gruver and Sylvia Taylor of Stanardsville and paternal grandparents, Theodore and Corenia Roach Stanardsville; uncles, James Taylor and wife, Sonny, Reese Taylor and wife, Athena; aunts, Patsy Leonard and husband, Scott, Mary Darnell and husband, David, Connie Shifflett and husband, Jay; niece, Cierra Roach; nephew, Isaiah Mentor; four cousins, Damien Taylor, Alex and Timmy Taylor, Mandy Darnell; and family friends; Margie Rowzie and Gale Marsh.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., today at Ryan Funeral Chapel in Quinque, with the Rev. C. C. Kurtz officiating. Interment
will be in Holly Memorial Gardens in Charlottesville.

Margaret D. Ward
Margaret D. Ward, 84, of Charlottesville died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, in a local hospital.
Born February 17, 1919, in Clifton Forge, Va., she was the daughter of the late David and Rachel Jennings Desper.
She retired from the Essex Pencil Company and was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church and the Morning Glories Bowling League.
She is survived by her husband, Roy E. Ward; four daughters, Shirley Frances King of Charlottesville, Patricia Mason and her husband William of Scottsville, Rachel King Marshall and her husband Jack of Charlottesville, and Jackie Sue Walker of Crozet; a sister, Anne McCauley and her husband Archie of Norfolk; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.
Margaret was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. The family wishes to express their appreciation of comfort and care given by the 5th floor day/night nurses at the Martha Jefferson Hospital.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, August 2, 2003, at the Hill & Wood Chapel with the Pastor Israel W. "Jake" Stewart, Jr. officiating. Interment
will follow at Riverview cemetery.

Brian Patrick Gibson
Aviation Structural Mechanic (Aviation Warfare/Naval Aircrewman) First Class Petty Officer Brian Patrick Gibson of Greenwood, Va. died on July 16, 2003, in a helicopter crash near Naval Air Station Sigonella located in Sicily, Italy. Brian "Gibby" Gibson served in the United States Navy for 12 years. He was born on May 28, 1970, in Charlottesville, Virginia. He was 33 years old.
He arrived at Helicopter Combat Support Squadron Four (HC-4) in 1992, where he attained qualifications as a MH-53E Helicopter Crewchief, Quality Assurance Inspector, Assistant NATOPS Instructor and Functional Checkflight Crewchief. While at HC-4, he detached to such locations as Bahrain, Italy, Albania, Sierra Leone and Liberia where he participated in Operation Assured Response in 1995.
In 1998, he transferred to NAS Sigonella Operations to fly on the UC-12 and the UC-26 aircraft. He attained qualifications as the NATOPS Program Manager and compiled over 1200 hours of flight time in these model aircraft. He received his Bachelors Degree in Professional Aeronautics from Embry Riddell University. AM1 Gibson returned to HC-4 in November of 2001 where he was the Leading Petty Officer for detachment "Team Bravo". He will be greatly missed by HC-4, friends in Sigonella and the United States Navy.
He is survived by his wife, Daniela Gibson of Motta S. Anatasia in Sicily; his parents, Clyde and Margaret "Peggy" Gibson of Greenwood, Va., his brother, Mike and his wife, Norma Gibson, and their son, Joshua, of Waynesboro; his sister, Michelle Moran, and her children, Ryan and Kayla of Greenwood; his sister-in-law, Lora and her husband, Larry Colquitt, and their children, Charniela and Darien of Sicily; he is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Brian "Gibby" Gibson will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at the Teague Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow in Holly Memorial Gardens.
