Dr. Joseph MacKnight
Dr. Joseph Charles MacKnight died July 28, 2003, at his home in Charlottesville, Va., after a lengthy battle with prostate cancer.
Dr. MacKnight was born March 9, 1921, in Fort Thomas, Ky., to Joseph A. and Juanita MacKnight.
He and his mother relocated to New Jersey in early adolescence, and he graduated from Ridgefield Park High School in 1939. He then received his bachelor’s degree in pre-med. from Wheaton College in 1943 and his doctor of medicine from Columbia University Medical School in 1946. After his marriage to June Laurence Ware in October 1947, Dr. MacKnight was an Army captain in medical service in post-war occupied Japan.
Upon his return to the United States, Dr. MacKnight completed his residency training in internal medicine and then began solo practice in general medicine at the Pratt Clinic in Fredericksburg. Dr. MacKnight practiced in Fredericksburg for 25 years and was highly respected by both patients and colleagues for his professional work and for his undying service to patients in need. He remained one of the only physicians who still performed house calls at the time of his departure from Fredericksburg in 1978. He directed student health services at Mary Washington College for many years while teaching several popular undergraduate courses.
Dr. MacKnight was an active member of Fredericksburg Baptist Church and taught the Barracca Sunday School Class, which was broadcast for many years on local radio stations on Sunday mornings. He was also a member and past president of the Kiwanis Club, having recently been cited for 48 years of dedicated service, and a longstanding member of the Gideons.
In 1978, Dr. MacKnight accepted a position in occupational medicine with DuPont in Martinsville, Va. Two years later, he accepted the position of head plant physician for the DuPont plant in Seaford, Del. Upon moving to Seaford, Dr. MacKnight rekindled a love for the shore and the symphony, and became an active member of Grace Baptist Church. Weekend retreats in Fenwick Island were a constant source of relaxation and enjoyment and helped to bring the growing family nearer. Dr. MacKnight became a leader in Walk to Emmaus and was an AARP local president and representative to the Delaware State legislature.
Upon his retirement from DuPont, he continued to practice part-time in the Seaford area, was the medical director of a local nursing home, and pursued his avocations with even greater drive and enjoyment.
Fulfilling a longstanding dream to retire to the mountains of Charlottesville, Dr. MacKnight moved to Charlottesville in 1996 and resided there until his death. He was an active member of Trinity Presbyterian Church and continued to travel extensively until his failing health precluded it. He particularly enjoyed attending educational and cultural offerings of the University of Virginia, with special interest taken in the speakers and topics of the Miller Center.
Dr. MacKnight was an avid reader and book collector with a particular interest in historical and biographical works. He similarly enjoyed preparing and presenting lectures on these works. He was a lifelong stamp and travel-related statue collector, an accomplished pianist and a knowledgeable gardener.
Dr. MacKnight is survived by his wife of 55 years, June Ware MacKnight; four sons, Paul J. MacKnight of Sulphur, La., Thomas E. MacKnight of Richmond, Va., Kenneth C. MacKnight of Ashburn, Va., and Dr. John M. MacKnight of Charlottesville, Va.; 17 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
