William P. Heath Jr.
William P. Heath Jr., 110 Blue Crab Lane, Heathsville, Va., passed away at his home on Monday, August 25, 2003, after a battle with cancer. Mr. Heath was born in Esmont, Albemarle County, Va., July 4, 1934, and was a member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, Esmont.
He obtained his degree in textile technology from Clemson University in 1956, and went to Washington, D.C., as a patent examiner in the U.S. Patent Office. After serving with the U.S. Army, attaining rank of lieutenant in the Quartermaster Corps, he attended law school at American University, Washington, D.C., graduating in 1962. Following law school he worked at Redstone Arsenal in Alabama for the Army Missile Command and then worked for International Playtex. In 1966, he joined the Patent Section of Eastman Kodak Co. in Kingsport, Tenn., and retired from there as Assistant General Counsel in the Legal Dept. in 1994.
Mr. Heath was an avid saltwater fisherman, living on the Chesapeake Bay for a number of years after his retirement.
Preceding him in death was his father, William P. Heath Sr., and sister Estelle Boyce Heath Fortune.
Survivors include his wife, Susan Wyrick Heath, four sons, Brian S. Heath of Heathsville, Va., William E. Heath of Rockwood Tenn., Brent A. Heath and Lindsay A. Heath, both of Esmont, Va.; his mother, Estelle Boyce Heath and sister Mary Foushee Heath Booth, both of Richmond, Va.; one grandson, one granddaughter, and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
At Mr. Heath’s request, his body was cremated and interred in Scottsville cemetery, Scottsville, Va. Complying with his wishes, a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 29, 2003, at Thacker Brothers Funeral Home, Scottsville, with the Rev. Dr. J. Edwin Pippin officiating (please omit flowers). Thacker Brothers Funeral Home, Scottsville is in charge of arrangements.
Jane L. Holt
Jane Louise Holt, 69, of Charlottesville, died Saturday evening, August 23, 2003, at her home.
Born October 11, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Paul W. Dudley, Sr. and Blanche H. Dudley. A brother, Paul W. Dudley, Jr. and a sister, Elizabeth A. Hoy, also preceded her in death.
She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, which she attended regularly, and found a new family in everyone she met there. She was talented in many ways with only a 10th grade education, but later received her GED. She enjoyed sewing, knitting and using her woodworking tools to build whatever she wanted. Her biggest love was her birds. She bought and sold many kinds.
Jane accomplished much in her life. She and her husband built Mountain View Adult Home on Carlton Avenue and ran it for several years and before that for a number of years she took care of many sick people in her home, one of which was Anastasia, the Grand Duchess of Russia.
She will be missed by everyone, especially her two best friends, her husband, Sonny, and her dog, Harry.
Survivors include her husband of 39 years, Fred "Sonny" Holt, a daughter, Vicki C. Branham and her husband Glenn, all of Charlottesville; a granddaughter, Amy S. Bishop, and her husband Lee of Palmyra; a great-granddaughter, Lauren Toms, also of Palmyra; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 11a.m. today, at the Hill & Wood Chapel with Pastor Wendell Lamb and Dr. Joel P. Jenkins officiating. Interment
will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens.

Nancy C. Jordan
Nancy Carpenter Jordan, 71, of Richmond, died Monday, August 25, 2003, at the University of Virginia Hospital. Born September 6, 1931, in Baltimore Md., she was the daughter of the late Ose Fay Carpenter and Lola Dalton Carpenter.
Mrs. Jordan was a member of River Road Baptist Church in Richmond.
She is survived by her husband, Edgar Williamson Jordan of Richmond; two daughters, Mary Page Jordan of Portland Oregon and Kent Jordan Child, and husband Drew; three grandchildren of Bend Oregon; a sister, Martha A. Carpenter of Charlottesville. She was preceded in death by a sister, Fay Carpenter Kirchman.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday August 29, 2003, at Robinson River Primitive Baptist Church, Brightwood, Madison County, Va., with interment in the church cemetery. Elder Toliver Utz and Dr. Philip Hart will officiate.

Emma Olga Kauffman
Emma Olga Kauffman, 97, of Orange formerly of Elyria, Ohio died Monday August 25, 2003, at the Orange County Nursing Home. Born April 17, 1906 in Raymond Minnesota, she was the daughter of the late Albert Gustav Barbknecht and the late Wilhelmine "Minnie" Wegener Barbknecht. Her husband was the late Jesse E. Kauffman. She was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Orange.
She is survived by one daughter Joan Arndt and husband, Norman of Schertz Texas; one son James Earl Kauffman, and wife Sherre Rae of Gordonsville; five grandchildren, Lori Hart, Brad Kauffman, David Arndt, Andy Arndt, Dale Arndt, fifteen great-grandchildren, one cousin, Mattie Bonds of Elyria Ohio; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Albert Barbknecht, two sisters, Helen Kauffman and Ella Perkins.
Funeral services will be at the chapel in Brookdale cemetery in Elyria Ohio with interment in Brookdale cemetery. The Rev. Peter Mealwitz will officiate. Pearl M. Powell
Pearl McCary Powell 76, of Charlottesville, died August 24, 2003, at Westminster Canterbury.
Born September 22, 1926, in Albemarle County, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Ivey and Mary Bell Johnson McCary. Her husband, Claude Powell; a sister, Louise M. Pippin and two brothers, Allen T. McCary and Clyde N. McCary, also preceded her in death.
She was retired from the Personnel Department at Michie Company.
Survivors include a niece, Mildred Almarode and her husband, Earl; a nephew Carl Pippin and his wife, Pat; great nieces and nephews, Joy Almarode, Ken Almarode, Carl Pippin Jr. and Mandy Pippin.
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on August 29, 2003, at Hill & Wood Chapel with Rev. Frank Schumaker. Interment
will follow at Scottsville cemetery.

Stanley Spencer Radar, 68, of Charlottesville, died Saturday Aug. 23, 2003.

Sonia Schrimpf, 62, of Charlottesville, died August 26, 2003, in a local hospital. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 1p.m. Thursday, August 28, 2003, at Monticello Memory Gardens. Harold W. Sutton, III
Bill Sutton of Richmond, gave up the diligent fight against cancer on Aug. 24, 2003.
Bill was born March 15, 1958, in Charlottesville, the son of Mary Crowe Farrell and Harold William Sutton Jr. He attended local schools and graduated from the UVa. program of Rad. Technologist, PVCC and Mary Baldwin College.
Bill worked for Louisa Medical Services after graduating from the Rad. Tech. Program. Giving up this position, he returned to college to earn an A.A.S. degree and a Bachelor’s degree. Upon graduating from college Bill took a job with Mobile Service of Richmond; working there until accepting a staff technologist position at St. Mary’s Hospital. He worked the weekend shift for many years before becoming a Clinical Instructor with the St. Mary’s Hospital X-ray Program.
Bill is survived by two sons, Jason R. Sutton and M. Logan Sutton of Charlottesville; a brother Randall L. Sutton of Tx.; a sister, Sherrie R. Kohler, and husband, Frank of TX, Jean P. Sutton and Natasha Sutton of Md.; Nieces, Jennifer Reeves, Kathryn Bakhrania; Nephew, Cory Reaves and Ian Kohler; Cousins, Wesley Crowe, Sandra Crowe, Rebecca Crowe, Lauren Tienken, Kim Westrick, Julie Meadows; the mother of his children, Terry Carrazco; uncle, Pete Crowe; aunts, Lou Crowe, Ethel Crowe; and a dear friend Carol Keymont.
A memorial service will be held at Holly Memorial Gardens on Rt. 29 N., at the Urn Niche Memorial Monument (# 456G) on Thursday, August 28, at 2 p.m.

Dan Rea Woodson
Dan Rea Woodson, 86, of Crozet, died at Mountainside Senior Living on August 25, 2003. He was born on January 9, 1917, in Albemarle County to the late Albert Shelton Woodson and Ethel Rea Woodson.
He is survived by one sister, Elizabeth W. Pugh of Crozet; two nieces, Ethel Rea Pugh of Crozet, Bettie Ann Stanerson and husband Ron of Silver Springs, Md.; three great-nieces and seven great-great-nieces and nephews.
He was a lifelong member of Hillsboro Baptist Church, and a World War II and Korean War veteran, Navy Fleet Reserve, and a member of the VFW.

Robert H. Arey Jr.
Robert Henry "Bob" Arey Jr., 60, of Dillwyn, Va., died Wednesday, August 20, 2003, in Albemarle County.
He was born December 26, 1942, in Waynesboro, a son of Robert Henry and Gladys Tomes Arey.
He was a graduate of VSDB School of Staunton, where he played varsity football.
For over 30 years he was self-employed as a carpenter and cabinet maker. He loved the outdoors and was a member of the NRA and Virginia Bass Fishermen.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his special aunt and uncle, Virginia and George Fischer, and two brothers, Grover W. Arey and Charles Christopher Arey.
Surviving are his wife, Theresa Firebaugh Arey; his stepmother, Bessie Arey; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Wayne and Robin Arey, Wesley and Lisa Arey, and Austin Arey; four sisters, Maudie A. Lipes and husband James, Shirley A. Craig, Pat Via, and Joanne McMillan; five brothers; Jeffrey R. Arey and wife Christy, L. Gene Arey and wife Linda, Thomas A. Arey Sr. and wife Jean, Joseph M. McMillan, and John W. McMillan; seven grandchildren, Wesley Arey Jr., Lesha Arey, Dakota Arey, Sa'Jon Arey, River Arey, and Willow Arey; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, August 28, 2003, at McDow Funeral Home by Pastor L. Gene Arey. Interment
will follow in Augusta Memorial Park, Waynesboro.

Lorene E. Downer
Lorene E. Downer, beloved wife of William B. Downer and devoted mother of W. Benton Downer III and Kimberly Ruth Downer Mann and also a nephew whom she treated like a son, Robert H. Downer Jr., passed away on August 24, 2003, after a valiant battle against a difficult illness. Among the special loved ones who cherish her memory are Landon John Brooks Downer, her grandson, and Kelly M. Downer, his mother and her daughter-in-law, Whitney Lynn Downer and William B. Downer IV, her grandchildren, and their mother, April Atwood, her son-in-law, Robert A. Mann, and Patsy H. Downer, whom she considered a daughter-in-law, all from Charlottesville, Va., she also leaves a host of family and friends including her nieces and nephews and half-brothers and sisters and very special sisters-in-law Hazel Peacock and Murrill Smithka. She was preceded in death by her mother, Eunice A. Walton, and her guardians, Earl H. and Amy Y. Vaughan.
She was born in Charlottesville on October 6, 1933. She was a charter member of Broadus Memorial Baptist Church. She was a nationally accredited Master Flower Show Judge. She was a member of the Monticello Garden Club, and during her life held the offices of President of the Sacagawea Garden Club, board member and President of the Shenandoah District, board member of the South Atlantic Region, board member of National Garden Clubs, Inc., and board member and President of the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs. In her capacity as President, Trustee, and individually she was a great supporter of Nature Camp, which is in Vesuvius, Va., and operated by the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs to promote the study, appreciation, and preservation of nature and to serve our youth, whom she loved.
Her entire family wishes to express their deep appreciation for the personal and loving care of all of her doctors and the marvelous staff of the University of Virginia Cancer and Medical Centers.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, August 28, 2003, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church; 735 Park Street, Charlottesville, with the Reverend Eric Powell and the Reverend Bob Wheeler officiating. Interment
will follow at Monticello Memory Gardens.

Sandra R. Furr
Sandra Raynor Furr of Kannapolis, N.C., died Friday, August 22, 2003. She was born January 14, 1962, in Albemarle County. She was preceded in death by her mother, Betty Ann Beahm, her father, Richard Russell Raynor, and brother, Richard Alan Raynor.
She graduated from Orange County High School in 1980. She worked at Lorianna clothing store, and was the secretary and treasurer of Widenhouse and Furr Rental Co. She was a member of Highest Praise Family Worship Center, where she sang in the choir and was a volunteer worker for the Crisis Pregnancy Center.
Survivors include her husband of 21 years, Nevin Wayne Furr of Kannapolis, one daughter, Autumn Russell Furr, and four brothers, Kenneth W. Raynor of Concord, N.C., Timothy W. Raynor of Orange Co., and Brian K. Raynor of Concord, N.C.
Funeral services were held yesterday at the Highest Praise Family Worship Center with the Rev. Bruce Rabon officiating. Interment
followed at the Oakwood cemetery in Concord.
Visitation was at the Highest Praise Family Worship Center, China Grove, from 12 to 2 p.m.

Walter Gaedecke
Walter Gaedecke, 94, of Charlottesville, died on Sunday, August 24, 2003, in the Coronary Care Unit of the University of Virginia Hospital.
Born September 2, 1908, in Germany, he was the son of the late Franz Gaedecke and Sophie Assai Gaedecke. He was also preceded in death by his former wife of 66 years, Gertrude Gaedecke, and a son, Arthur Gaedecke.
Mr. Gaedecke retired in 1970 as a design engineer after many years with Westinghouse and Sunbeam. He was a small business owner, formerly an Olympic gymnast for Germany, a member of Saint Brigid Church and the Elks Lodge #219 in Meadville, Pa., a member of the Senior Center in Charlottesville, a passionate bowler, and an avid gardener.
He is survived by his wife, June Moon Gaedecke of Charlottesville; a son, Walter R. Gaedecke, and his wife, Cynthia of Huddleston, Va.; a daughter, Marilyn Helleberg, and her husband, Dr. John Helleberg of Charlottesville; four grandchildren, Nicole "Nikki" Gaedecke of Santa Fe, N.M.; John Helleberg of Hood River, Ore., and Telluride, CO; Brian Helleberg of Charlottesville; and CPT. David Gaedecke and his wife, Aimee, of Germany; three great-grandchildren, Tyler, Sarah, and Andrew Gaedecke.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, August 27, 2003, at Hill & Wood Funeral Home with the Rev. Jeanette Buys officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service. Interment
will be in the St. Brigid cemetery in Meadville, Pa.
