John T. Stinnette
John Thomas Stinnette, 87, of Lynchburg, passed away Sunday, August 24, 2003, at his home. For 57 years, he was the husband of Maxie Cole Stinnette, of Lynchburg, who survives him.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Carolyn Kay Stinnette of Annandale, Va., his son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Mary Stinnette of Free Union, Va.; four grandchildren, Nathan, Daniel, Rebecca and Elizabeth.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m., Tuesday, August 26, 2003, at Fairview Christian Church, Lynchburg by Rev. Robert W. Rueter and the Rev. Jack Hamilton. Interment
will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park, Lynchburg.
Friends may visit from 7–8:30 p.m. Monday, August 25, 2003, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, Lynchburg, and at other times at the family home at 5904 Rhonda Road, Lynchburg.
Margaret G. Turner
Margaret G. Turner, 71, died August 23, 2003, in a local hospital. Born in Fluvanna County, she was the daughter of the late Harry Gordon and Bessie Britts Gooch. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Benjamin Turner, in 1977.
Margaret was a graduate of Mary Washington College and pursued a teaching career, most of which took place in Albemarle County Public Schools.
She is survived by a son, Blair Turner, and daughter-in-law, Karen Turner, of Ivy; a daughter, Paige Turner, and Jim Sargent, of West Chester, Pa. She leaves four grandchildren, Elizabeth Turner, Caroline Turner, and Ben Turner, all of Ivy, and Emma Sargent of West Chester Pa. In addition, her brother, Harry (Pete) Gooch, and his wife, Ann, of Keswick; her sister, Mildred Parker, and husband, Bill, of Chesapeake, survive her, as well as five nieces and nephews.
Friends and family are invited to visit at Hill and Wood Funeral Home on Monday, August 25, 2003, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held at First Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, August 26, 2003, at 11 a.m. Prior to the service, a program of Margaret’s favorite music will be presented by organist, Jeff LeDuc. A reception will follow the service in the Chapel. Burial will be private.
It is suggested that contributions in Margaret’s memory be made to Martha Jefferson Hospital Cancer Care Center; 459 Locust Avenue, Charlottesville, Va. 22902.
James S. Koczan
The family of James S. Koczan would like to invite friends to a casual, informal gathering at the Koczan home at 3860 West River Road in Scottsville on Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, beginning at 2 p.m.
Jim died Aug. 5, 2003, in Houston, Texas, while visiting his daughter and family. We will all enjoy an outdoor covered dish lunch.
Stanley S. Rader
Stanley Spencer Rader, 68, of Charlottesville, died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2003. Born in Ashland, Ohio, he was the son of the late Harold Glen Melvin Rader and Beatrice Ekey Rader.
Mr. Rader received his bachelor’s degree in education from Wittenberg University, Springfield, Ohio. His professional career included teaching physical education in Ferndale, Mich.; Ohio; and Philippines.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn LaFon Rader; two daughters, Beth Rader and Jennifer Giacalone and her husband, Joby, and two grandchildren, all of Charlottesville; and a sister, Penny Sweeterman, and her husband, Dennis, of Strongsville, Ohio.
A memorial service and reception will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003, at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 100 Alderman Road.

Rudolph A. Sacra
Rudolph Aston Sacra of Charlottesville passed away Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, at his residence.
He was born, June 10, 1925, in Mineral, son of the late James G. and Patty Berryman Sacra. He is survived by his wife, June Boger Sacra.
Mr. Sacra was educated in the Louisa County schools and at the University of Richmond. During World War II, he served in the United States Army Chemical Corps, in the European Theater of Operation. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he served on the Board of Trustees, the Adminstrative Board and the Building Committee . He retired from Sperry Marine in October 1986.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003, at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Harry Kennon officiating. Interment
will follow t 1 p.m., in Hillcrest cemetery in Louisa.
The family will receive friends from 6:30- 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Melvin M. Hamilton
Melvin Hamilton of Charlottesville, Va., departed this life on Monday, August 18, 2003, at Trinity Mission. He was born July 28, 1915, to Will and Sally Hamilton in Johnson City Tennessee. Will and Sally had eight children. Three brothers, Clarence Hamilton, Gilbert Hamilton and James Hamilton, and one sister, Helen Day preceded him in death. He was the widower of Gertrude M. Hamilton.
Melvin served his country in World War II in the South Pacific. When D-Day observances would come around he would remark "What is there to celebrate, I was getting my butt kicked in the South Pacific." In 1945 he married
Gertrude Michie who was the daughter of Rev. James and Mirah Michie. They raised and educated three daughters. Mrs. Hamilton died in 1995 leaving him with lovely memories of their 45 years together.
Melvin Hamilton retired from Virginia Power and Electric Company in 1980 after 31 years of service. "Buster", "Mac", "Hamp" and "Slap Papa", were his various nick names that were associated with his warm personality.
He leaves a long legacy of African American stories of the military and of his life. His various anodes "Girl", "Gal", and "hold your head up, you can make it", will long be remembered.
Mr. Hamilton was active in the Civil Rights struggle in the city of Charlottesville, he was a member and served as a deacon of Ebenezer Baptist Church.
He leaves to cherish his memory three daughters, Gloria D. Hamilton of Santa Barbara, Calif., Melvinia P. Hamilton of Miami, Fla., and Nina A. Hamilton of Charlottesville, Va.; one sister, Roxie Jones of Long Branch, N.J.; two brothers, Argel Hamilton and Mac Hamilton of California; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Ebenezer Baptist Church with Dr. E.G. Hall officiating.
The Family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.

Hilda F Dodd
Hilda Fields Dodd, 86 of beech Grove Community, died Friday, Aug. 22 2003, at the Lovington Health Care Center. Born in Nelson County May 18, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Herman Courtney and Norma Davis Fields. She was a member of Beech Grove Christian Church, where she actively participated until her health failed. She retired from ConAgra after many years of service as a supervisor.
She is survived by three sons, David Dodd of Roseland, Wendall Dodd of Ruckersville and Bo Dodd of Roseland; two sisters, Ruth Shirley McGann of Beech Grove and Myra Mack of Wilmington, Del.; 10 grandchildren, Brooke Willard, Marcey Dodd, Shelton Dodd, Elin Martin, Joanie Dodd, Maggie Dodd, David Dodd Jr., Kelsey Dodd and Haley Dodd.
Following a private interment, a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, at Beech Grove Christian Church, with Pastor Ernest Love officiating.

Louise Patterson
Virginia Louise Pierce Patterson, 84, Scottsville, died Thursday, Aug, 21, 2003.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman L. Patterson; her parents, William and Emily pierce; three brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include three children, Ricky Patterson and his wife, Sue, and Betty Lou Baber and her husband, Charles, all of Scottsville, and Jerry Patterson and his wife, Carol, of Anaconda Mont.; one brother, James H. Pierce of North Carolina; and one sister, Beaulah J. Beran of Richmond; seven grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
Mrs. patterson and her husband owned and operated Patterson’s Store in Scottsville for many years.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church cemetery, Esmont, with the Rev. Elfie Finn-McKenzie officiating. There are no viewing hours scheduled.
The family will receive friends from 1-4 p.m., today at the home of her daughter, Betty Lou Baber.

Nolie W. Terrell
Nolie Woolfolk Terrell, 82, of Unionville, died Aug. 21, 2003, at Martha Jefferson Hospital, Charlottesville. She was born May 20, 1921, in Spotsylvania County.
She was the first black selected to serve on the Orange County Welfare board. She was employed by Clarostat Manufacturing of Orange for 12 years. She also worked along with her husbadn and his family in the operation of The Dew Drop Inn Restaurant.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest L. Terrell; and her parents, Henry and Gussie Presley Woolfolk.
Survivors include four sons, Roland A. Terrell of Unionville, Ernest E. Terrell of Atlanta Ga., Howard Lucas and his wife, Patricia, of Madison and Linwood Lucas of Orange; five daughters, Mrs. Cynthia T. golden of Bowling Green, Mrs. Sharon T. Nickens and her husband, the Rev. John Nickens, of the Eastern Shore of Virginia, Mrs.Brenda T. Jones and her husband, Donald, of Silver Springs, Md., Ms. Mary T. Freeman of Orange, and Ms. Joyce Lucas of Forestville, Md.; one brother, Thomas Woolfolk and his wife, Doris, of Hockessin, Del.; two sisters, Mrs. Flossie poles of Levittown, Pa., and Mrs. Sara Littles and her husband, Clarence, of New York, N.Y.; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Victoria T. Willliams of Unionville and Mrs. Mary Woolfolk of Hockessin, Del.; 20 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Orange Grove Baptist Church, Unionville. Interment
will follow at the Woolfolk family cemetery, Spotsylvania County, with Pastor Perry Moore officiating.

Margaret Craddock
Dr. Margaret Anita Craddock died on Wednesday, August 20, 2003.
Born on the 22nd day of June 1920, in Neath, South Wales. She studied medicine at the Welsh National School of Medicine in Cardiff and graduated in 1943.
She subsequently practiced as an anesthesiologist in London and the south of England.
She leaves a daughter, Sally Henderson, by her first marriage to John Turner; a husband, William E. Craddock, MD and two grandchildren, Craig and Sarah.
