Randy G. Williamson
Randy Gene Williamson, 44, of Fork Union, Va., passed away peacefully on August 18, 2003, after a quiet and determined battle with cancer.
Born and raised in Charleston, W.Va., he moved to Fluvanna County after marrying Dora Grubb Williamson in 1989. Randy and Dora are the proud parents of Steven Williamson.
Randy served 7 years in the U.S. Army, including a tour in South Korea. He was a carpenter and construction crew leader for AHIP, in Charlottesville. He found great joy in working with his co-workers and volunteers to provide renovated housing for those in need. He enjoyed spending time with his family and entertaining friends and relatives, with his wife and son.
A devoted loving husband and father, Randy will be greatly missed by all that knew him. His modest and caring nature will continue to live on in our hearts forever.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, August 22, 2003 at Lyles Baptist Church with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The Rev. Andy Meyers will officiate.

Dorothy Chapman
Dorothy "Dot Chapman, 62, died peacefully at her home in Keswick, on August 16, 2003.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Rose Marie Jefferson; mother, Dorothy Mae Allen of Charlottesville; and father, Willie Jefferson of Coatesville, Pa.
Dot leaves to cherish her memory a devoted husband of 44 years, Earnly O. Chapman of Keswick; three daughters, Aronda Chapman-Taylor and her husband, Billy Taylor, of Beltsville, Md., Ramona Chapman of Gordonsville, Lisa Chapman of Keswick; and one granddaughter, Brigic Quarles of Keswick; one brother, Willie Jefferson, Jr. of Washington, D.C.; two sisters, Deborah Thompson of Coatesville, Pa., and Cheryl Humpton-Djeredi of Caln, Pa.; two aunts, Lillian and her husband, Skip Martin, of Ohio; Francis and her husband, Carlton Jeffries, of Charlottesville; two uncles, Carl Jefferson and his wife, Louise, of Charlottesville, Robert Musray of Washington, D.C.; in-laws include Alexander and Elizabeth Chapman of Keswick, Rachel and James Chapman of Keswick, Bernice and Kenneth Mitchell of Keswick, Alberta Mahanes of Gordonsville, Alice and Phillip Arnette of Gordonsville. Also surviving are a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins and many loving and devoted friends.
The family would like to give special thanks to the caregivers of Hospice of the Piedmont and they also suggest for those wishing to make memorials, consider the American Diabetes Association.
A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, August 22, 2003, at 1 p.m. in the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses located on Fifth Street Extended (Old Lynchburg Road) in Charlottesville, Va.

Harry L. Colvin Jr.
Harry L. Colvin Jr., 45, of Stanardsville, died suddenly Sunday afternoon, August 17, 2003, in a motorcycle accident in Stanardsville, Va. He swerved to miss a woman and her child, who were riding a John Deere Gator ATV who pulled out in front of him on Route 621, River Bottom Road about 2:30 p.m. He worked for eight years for Jim Woodson Home & Hardware.
He is survived by his father, Harry Louis Colvin Sr., and his step-mother, Ethel Colvin, of Somerset, Va.; his sisters, Shirley Fisher of Charlottesville, Va., and Connie Pounders of Haymarket, Va., plus many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Cason Colvin, and his sister, Patricia Smith from Aldie, Va. and a nephew, Jamie Clark of Unionville, Va.
He was a devoted son to his father and stepmother, Harry and Ethel Colvin of Somerset, Va. He will be missed by all who loved him. We never walk alone even though we may think we do, even in our despair God always walks with you. He is now in the Lord’s hands. "No greater love has a man than he lay down his life for another."
Funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. at the Preddy Funeral Home, Orange, with Dr. James D. Singletary Jr. and Mark H. Smith officiating. Interment

Daniel Caleb Denby
Daniel Caleb Denby died Sunday, July 6, 2003, at his residence in Madrid, Spain. He was born on June 9, 1942, in Washington, D.C. He was married
for 21 years to Sheila Denby. He was preceded in death by his sister, Lisa Miriam Denby, in 1977 and his father, Caleb Norfleet Denby, in 1999.
He is survived by two sons, Paul Denby and Nick Denby, his mother, Beatrice Rioux Denby of Charlottesville, Va., one sister, Mrs. Toni Aldridge of Scottsville, Va., and seven brothers, Keith Denby of Scottsville, Va., Brian Denby of Dallas, TX, Gary Denby of Pattaya, Thailand, Paul Denby of Dallas, TX, Eric Denby of Charlottesville, Va., Kevin Denby of Scottsville, Va., and Shawn Denby of Scottsville, Va.. Daniel held a B.S. degree in Mathematics (1964 – College of William and Mary) and a Ph.D. in Mathematical Statistics, Operations Research and Industrial Engineering (1968 – Virginia Tech). Following a varied professional consulting and entrepreneurial career, Daniel founded REDIRECTION in 1983, a business brokerage firm specializing in mergers and acquisitions.
There will be a memorial service at 11 am on Friday, August 22, 2003, at the St. George Catholic Church on Route 20 in Scottsville, Va.

Terry Michael Hill
Terry Michael Hill of Charlottesville, died Monday, August 18, 2003, in the Winterhaven Assisted Living. Born on December 2, 1945, in Kansas City, Kan., Mr. Hill had a B.A. in Journalism and was a member of the American Translators Association.
He worked for 30 years at the National Ground Intelligence Center here in Charlottesville, Va. For the last 20 years he served as the Senior German and Scandinavian-language technical translator, translating complex text on a wide variety of scientific, technical and military subjects from German, Swedish, Danish and Norwegian into English. He was fluent in the German language and often served as a mentor for military linguists serving on temporary assignments at the NGIC. No one loved the art of translation quite as much as Terry, and his passion for German carried over into his free time. He frequently worked as free-lance translator for several private firms who would seek him out knowing that he loved the challenge of a particularly difficult text or short suspense. In addition, Terry was a student of philosophy who often read key texts in their original language.
When he was not translating, he kept up on world events by surfing the web for international sites or subscribing to numerous foreign language magazines and newspapers.
He relaxed by listening to a wide variety of music or watching movies DVD’s, his collection of music CD’s and DVD’s ran into the hundreds and reflected an eclectic taste. The core of his collection and his true love was bluegrass, and he often took leave to attend a particularly interesting bluegrass performance that he had discovered in some obscure location.
Terry’s expertise in German was widely recognized, and he was often sought out by NGIC analysts to review periodicals or other open source publications for items of potential interest. He earned numerous awards and commendations during his career, and his enthusiasm and dedication will be greatly missed by co-workers and customers alike.
He is survived by one brother, Merit D. Hill of Kansas City, Kansas.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 27, 2003, at Winterhaven; 220 S. Pantops Drive, Charlottesville. Ruth Payne Jones
Ruth Payne Jones, 73, of Charlottesville, entered eternal rest on Saturday, August 16, 2003, at the Cedars Nursing Home.
She was born August 6, 1930, to the late John H. and Dora Brooks Payne. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jasper V. Jones Sr.
She was educated in the Charlottesville Public Schools and attended Howard University in Washington, D.C. She was employed by the Cedars Nursing Home for over 30 years and she was a faithful member of Trinity Episcopal Church and also a member of Blue Ridge Temple number 66.
She leaves to cherish her memory her loving and devoted mother, Dora B. Payne, one son, Jasper V. Jones Jr., both of Charlottesville; four grandchildren, Colette Burns and her husband, Tim, Courtney Jones and his wife, Keishuh, Jermaine Jones, all of North Carolina; Felicia Morton and her husband, Robert, of Charlottesville; six great-grandchildren, two aunts, Florine Payne and Mary Blair, both of Charlottesville, and a host of other beloved relatives and friends.
Ms. Jones will lie in state at the funeral home Thursday, August 21, 2003, 12-8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, August 22, 2003, 12 noon, at Trinity Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Amakar officiating. Interment

William McDermott
William Francis McDermott, 82, died at home on Monday, August 18, 2003.
Born July 5, 1921, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the only surviving son of Thomas and Margaret McDermott.
He attended New York City Schools and Pratt Institute and worked at Sperry Gyroscope until he volunteered into the United States Navy in WWII. He served on submarines in the Atlantic and Pacific. He married
Eunice McConnell in 1945 at the U.S. Naval Air Station, Alameda, Calif. In 1966 he transferred to Sperry Marine Systems in Charlottesville. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Eunice, and five sons, William Jr. and his wife, Beth, of Charlottesville, Paul and his wife, Adrienne, of Boca Raton, Fla., Gregory and his wife, Jan, of Las Vegas, Nev., Neal and his wife, Chela, of Herndon, Va., and Arthur and his companion, Jim White, of Los Angeles, Calif., as well as five grandchildren, Scott, Shane, Nicole, Christopher and Andrew, two great-grandchildren, Gabriella and Thomas and many nieces and nephews; two sisters-in-law, Evelyn McDonald and Eileen Williams.
He enjoyed his memberships and volunteering with the Senior Center, Inc., and the local A.A.R.P. Chapter #192.
He requested cremation and will be privately interred at Culpeper National cemetery.

Carlyon Barber Shellman, 61, of Wolftown, died Monday, August 18, 2003, at her residence. She was born January 9, 1942, in Washington, D.C.
She was a technician at General Foods Maxwell House Coffee Division for many years and was a loving antiques person at the Country Shoppes of Culpeper.
She is survived by her mother, Leonora Elizabeth Barber of Culpeper, husband of 43 years Joseph Thomas Shellman Sr. of Wolftown; one daughter, Cheryl Kim Davis and husband Jim of Ohio; two sons, Joseph Thomas Shellman Jr., and Duane Allen Shellman, both of Wolftown; two brothers, Tom Barber of Culpeper, Clifford Barber of Fairfax; three sisters, Betty Retsill of South Carolina, Marilyn Barber of Culpeper, Linda Wright of Tazwell; three grandchildren, James Jr., Christopher, and Cynthia Davis all of Ohio, and many other loving relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Clarence Overby Barber, daughter Teresa Lee Shellman and son Ronald William Shellman.

Barbara Ann Patterson Abrahansen, 71, Crozet, died on August 28, 2003, at her residence. Born on June 3, 1932, the daughter of the late Earl S. Patterson, and Mary W. Patterson. She was preceded in death by one sister, Martha Jane Owens; and two brothers, Edward Carlton Patterson, and J. D. Patterson.
Barbara is survived by four sons; J. J. Abrahansen and his wife, Susanne of Copenhagen, Denmark, Christian Abrahansen of Paris, France, Scott Abrahansen of Texas and Steven Abrahansen and his wife, Alice of Georgia; four grandchildren, Steven, Mani, Justin, and Christine; three brothers, Stanley Patterson, Franklin Patterson, his wife, Beulah and Roger Patterson, and his wife, Patsy; also three sisters, Katherine P. Coffee, and her husband Paul, Dorothy P. Jones and her husband, James, and Grace P. Morris, and her husband David.

Robert J. Coles Sr.
Robert James "Pete" Coles Sr., 92, of Charlottesville, entered eternal rest on Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003, at the Martha Jefferson Hospital. He was born April 18, 1911, in Albemarle County. He was the oldest of 16 children, he was the son of the late Hastings and Pauline Ragland Coles. He joined the Chapman Grove Baptist Church, at an early age, where he served on the Deacon Board for over 30 years, until his health began to fail, while actively involved at Chapman Grove he was a spirited singer who loved the Lord.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years, Margaret Terry Coles, he was employed by the Jessup Family for over 40 years.
He leaves to cherish his memory four daughters, Fellisco Harris, Robin Harmon, Kim Swift, all of Charlottesville, and Betty Sue Coates of Fla.; one son, Robert James Coles Jr., of Charlottesville; three sisters, Catherine Payne, Clarice Harris, both of Charlottesville, and Pauline Clark of Clinton Md.; two brothers, Dr. Braxton Coles of Chicago, Ill., and Ryland Coles of Charlottesville; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a host of other beloved relatives and friends.

Elizabeth P. Cohen
Elizabeth "Betty" Patterson Cohen, 72, of Charlottesville, died Thursday, September 4, 2003, at Martha Jefferson Hospital following a lengthy illness.
A native of Hendersonville, N.C., she had lived in Charlottesville since 1983. She was the daughter of the late Edward, and Doris Harris Patterson, and granddaughter of the late Harry, and Minnie Patterson.
Mrs. Cohen was a graduate of the University of Virginia, where she received her Master’s degree in Speech Pathology. She was a former member of the Agudas Israel Synagogue of Hendersonville.
Survivors include her husband of 52 years, William H. Cohen; three children, Arlene Susan Cohen, of Charlottesville, Helen Judith Frank, of Londonderry, N.H., and Andrew Daniel Cohen, of Greenwood, Ind.; three brothers, Larry Richard Patlas Patterson, of Nashville, Tenn., Robert David Patterson, of Sun City, Ariz., and Alan Morris Patterson of Providence, R.I.; and four grandchildren, Georgina Elizabeth Frank, Brynne Anne Cohen-Dodge, Arthur Edward Cohen-Dodge, and Trevor Eli Cohen-Dodge.
"We will always love our wife, and mother, who was a dynamic and loving presence. She will be sorely missed."
A graveside service was held Friday, at Oak Dale cemetery in Hendersonville, with Mr. Morris Kaplan officiating.
