Paula S. Gnotta
Paula S. Gnotta, 79, passed away peacefully at the University of Virginia Hospital on September 2, 2003. She was born April 7, 1924. Her beloved husband, Leo Gnotta; her parents, Karl and Ida Schopfer; and her brother, Charly Schopfer, preceded her in death. She is survived by her sisters, Erika Wafler, Hedy Schopfer, and Nelly Zurcher; a brother Marcel Schopfer; and a number of nieces and nephews, all of Switzerland. Her devoted friend, Amy Stacy of Ruckersville, Va., also survives her.
Born on April 7, 1924 in Bern, Switzerland, Paula first came to the United States with a diplomatic family in 1950. After her marriage to Leo in 1951, Paula loved her life here in the United States. She was a seamstress for Saks Fifth Avenue and a homemaker who especially loved to cook, crochet and create masterpieces with her needlepoint. Paula was known for putting the needs of others before her own needs and enjoyed working with Meals on Wheels for many years. Her kind and gentle spirit touched the lives of all who knew her. The family would like to extend their appreciation to Dr. Daniel Becker and the staff on the Palliative Care Unit at the University of Virginia Hospital for their kindness and tender care during Paula's last days of life.
Teague Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements. At Paula's request, a quiet burial will take place at Gates of Heaven cemetery in Silver Spring, Md., on September 10, 2003, at 1 p.m., with Monsignor William O’Donnell officiating.
Judson B. Trapnell

William F. Webb Jr.
William F. Webb Jr. of Leesburg, Va., died on September 3, 2003, He is survived by his wife; Janice H. Webb; a son, William F. Webb III of Richmond; a daughter, Debra W. Willis, of Glen Allen; a brother Bobby Jess Webb of Tallahassee, Fla.; four sisters, Mary Lloyd of Somerset, Shirley Walters of Gordonsville, Alice Colvin and husband, C.C. "Dixie" Colvin of Gordonsville, Ruth Layman and husband, Charles Layman of Troy; and three grandchildren.
Bill went to work for C&P Telephone in 1947 and retired in 1981 as Foreman Supervisor of Construction. He worked for Cablevision of Loudoun from 1982 to 1987. He served as a member of the Leesburg Town Council from 1992 to 1998; served as the Town’s representative to the Transportation Coordinating Council of Northern Virginia. He also drove school buses for the Loudoun County school system for 13 years.
Graveside services will be held on Monday, September 8, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Maplewood cemetery, Gordonsville, Va. Memorial contributions may be made to Loudoun Interfaith Relief, P.O. James F. Wells Sr.
James Frederick Wells Sr., 69, of Charlottesville, was called to heaven on Tuesday, September 2, 2003, at Henrico Doctors Hospital in Richmond, Va.
Mr. Wells was born on August 12, 1934, and was a life long resident of Charlottesville. He was the son of the late Austin A. and Alberta Barksdale Wells.
After graduating valedictorian from Miller School in 1952, and attending the University of Virginia he served in the U.S. Marine Corp during the Korean conflict. After his discharge he was head salesman and head of foreign accounts for ITT. Branching out from there he formed his own company, ALTA, Inc., in Atlanta, Ga., installing direct dial.
He is survived by two sons; James F. Wells Jr., and Jonathan Wells; four grandchildren; as well as three sisters, Louise Anderson of Charlottesville, Della Rupertus of Silver Spring, Md., Fern Gorin of Jacksonville, Fla.; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as great and great-great nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, September 7, in the Hill & Wood Chapel . Interment
will follow at Monticello Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends this evening, from 7 to 8 p.m. at Hill & Wood.

Robert W. Wood
Robert Walker Wood, 82, of Troy, died September 4, 2003, at his home.
Born July 31, 1921, in Albemarle County, he was the son of the late Anderson and Mary Lee Wood. He was also preceded in death by a brother George; and sisters, Violet and Ida Wood; and a son, Ronnie W. Wood.
He served in the U.S. Army; was the owner & operator of Wood’s Store on Route 20 S.; and a member of the Moose Lodge;
Survivors include his wife, Maebelle A. Wood of Troy; a son, Monte R. Wood of Charlottesville; a brother, Willie T. Wood of Ashland; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; special friends, James & Sandra Thomas; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Sunday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, September 8, 2003, at Riverview cemetery with Mr. Roger Browning officiating.

Marion Arnette
Marion Arnette, of Old Bridge, New Jersey, formerly of Charlottesville, Va., departed this life on Monday, September 1, 2003, at the Raritan Bay Medical Center in Old Bridge N.J. She was born in Kents Store, Va., May 22, 1921, the daughter of the late Linwood Clyde Arnette, and Maude Banks Arnette.
She was a former member of Ebenezer Baptist Church. Her outgoing personality and caring nature were to be admired. She worked as an Avon lady for a number of years.
She leaves to cherish her memory a brother, Banks Arnette, and his wife Coretta of Old Bridge, N.J.; a niece, Lynn Cheryl Waiters of Old Bridge, N.J.; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6, at J. F. Bell Funeral Home Chapel. Interment
will follow in Oakwood cemetery.

Elto S. Brice
Elto Shalmare Brice, 68, of Louisa, departed her life at home September 3, 2003. She was born December 29, 1934 to the late Marcellous and Ruby Jackson Brice.
She was a faithful member of County Line Baptist Church, Kents Store.
She leaves to cherish her memory three sisters, Luberta Brice, and Mary Shelton (Ivor) both of Louisa, and Estelle Pace (Haywood) of Sandy Hook; four nephews, Thomas Brice Jr. (Keeron), Derrick Brice, and their mother, Barbara, all of Rockville, Ivor Shelton Jr. of Louisa, and Garrick Pace of Sandy Hook; one aunt-in-law, Margaret Jackson of Richmond; and a number of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, September 7, 2003 at County Line Baptist Church, Kents Store with Rev. Walter Jones Sr. officiating. She will lie in state one hour prior to service. Interment
in church cemetery.

Elizabeth P. Cohen
Elizabeth "Betty" Patterson Cohen, 72, of Charlottesville, died Thursday, September 4, 2003, at Martha Jefferson Hospital following a lengthy illness.
A native of Hendersonville, NC, she had lived in Charlottesville since 1983. She was the daughter of the late Edward, and Doris Harris Patterson, and granddaughter of the late Harry, and Minnie Patterson.
Mrs. Cohen was a graduate of the University of Virginia, where she received her Master’s degree in Speech Pathology. She was a former member of the Agudas Israel Synagogue of Hendersonville.
Survivors include her husband of 52 years, William H. Cohen; three children, Arlene Susan Cohen, of Charlottesville, Helen Judith Frank, of Londonderry, N.H., and Andrew Daniel Cohen, of Greenwood, Ind.; three brothers, Larry Richard Patlas Patterson, of Nashville, Tenn., Robert David Patterson, of Sun City, Ariz., and Alan Morris Patterson of Providence, R.I.; and four grandchildren, Georgina Elizabeth Frank, Brynne Anne Cohen-Dodge, Arthur Edward Cohen-Dodge, and Trevor Eli Cohen-Dodge.
"We will always love our wife, and mother, who was a dynamic and loving presence. She will be sorely missed."
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, September 11, 2003, at Oak Dale cemetery in Hendersonville, with Mr. Morris Kaplan officiating.

Nancy Carol Davis
Nancy Carol Davis, 58, of Barboursville, died Tuesday, September 2, 2003, at the University of Virginia Medical Center. Born Sept. 2, 1945, in Johnstown, Pa. She was the daughter of the late Thomas E. Doubt, and the late Margaret Rayha Doubt. She was a member of the Ruckersville Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband Jonah M. Davis Jr. of Barboursville; two daughters, Vicky Marie Zumstein, and husband Edward Allen of Dale City, Va., and Carol Ann Davis of Richmond; one son Melvin Michael Davis of Barboursville; one brother Dr. Thomas J. Doubt, and wife Kathleen of Richmond; one sister Patricia Mitchell of Cleveland Ohio. She was preceded in death by a sister Marjie Harris. Memorial services will be Saturday, September 20, 2003, at 2 p.m. in the Ruckersville Baptist Church with private interment. Dr. Thoma Doubt and Rev. Kyle Clements will officiate. Anna Belle Foster
Anna Belle Dean Foster, 85, of Orange, Va. died September 4, 2003, in Green Valley Terrace, Millsboro, Del., She was preceded in death by her husband Willie I. "Buck" Foster; her sisters, Lucille Henry, and Nellie Deane; her brothers, Robert "R.C.", and Franklin Deane.
She is survived by her daughter, Anna Marie Foster Hogsten, and her husband James Marvin of Clarksville Del.; sisters, Odessa Hall, and Lulu Nieser of Baltimore Md.; brothers, Elmore Deane, of Ruckersville, Va., and W.R. "Bill" Deane of Keswick, Va.; grandsons, James Deane "J.D." Hogsten, and his wife Debbie of Dover, Del., and Lance Hogsten, and his wife Christine of Clarksville, Del.; two great-grandsons, Steven and Matthew Hogsten of Dover Del.; two great-granddaughters, Madison and Jordyn Hogsten, of Clarksville, Del.
She worked at American Silk Mill for many years, and was a longtime member of the Orange Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, Sept. 8, 2003, at the Preddy Funeral Chapel s250 W. Main St. Orange, Va. at 2 p.m. with interment in Graham cemetery, Orange conducted by Dr. Stanley Johnson. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

Bobby A. Harlow, 64, of Barboursville died September 3, 2003, at University of Virginia Hospital. Bobby was loved by all and had many wonderful friends.
Survivors include sisters, Virginia H. Breeden of Orange, Kathleen H. Shiflett of Pratts, Aleese H. Slachter of Arlington, and Jean H. Lam of Barboursville; brothers include James S. Harlow Jr., of Barboursville, Leland L. Harlow of Culpeper, Sheldon C. Harlow of Round Hill and, Franklin R. Harlow of Weyers Cave; numerous nieces and nephews too many to name.

Ruby Burley
"Sister" Ruby Burley, passed away on Sunday, August 31, 2003, at a local nursing home. She was the daughter of the late Mr. Samuel Burley, and the late Mrs. Elizabeth Brown Burley, of Stony Point, Va. She was the last survivor of the "Seven Burley Sisters". Mrs. Jones was born June 9, 1909. She received her education from the public school system of Albemarle County. She spent most of her adult life in Washington, D.C., and returned to Stony Point, Va., later in life. She was married
to the late Mr. Charlie Brown, after his death, she later married
the late Mr. Jesse Jones. She was a Baptist, and later became a member of the Father Divine Church for 10 to 12 years and did volunteer work for the Church.
She is survived by; nieces, nephews; great nieces, and great nephews; Mrs. Eva Burley Coachman, Mrs. Rose Conchita Abiera-Wood, Dr. Anita-Rae Smith-Pankey, Mrs. Cornelia Hairston Boone, Mrs. Lisa Roberts, Ms. Harriet Anna Pankey, Mrs. Anita Pankey Woolfork, Mr. Primitivo Abiera, Mr. Petrinilo Abiera, Mr. Antonio Abiera, Mr. Joseph Wood Jr., Mr. Titus Pankey III., Mr. Caesar-Titus Allen Pankey; and other nieces, nephews and a host of cousins.
A graveside service will be held at the Family Burial Grounds in Stony Point, Va., located at the "Old Home Place of the Burley Family" on Friday, morning September 5, at 11a.m.
