Roscoe H. Grady

Roscoe H. Grady, 84, of Orange, formerly of Harrisonburg, died Tuesday, September 2, 2003, at the Orange County Nursing Home. Born May 5, 1919, in LaGrange N.C., he was the son of the late Roscoe Flavius Grady, and the late Amy Louise Graham Grady. His wife was the late Zoa Van Winkle Grady. He was a retired Navy Chief Petty Office, retired civilian employee of U.S. Nava Academy, and real estate agent.

He is survived by two daughters, Patricia O’Grady Filer, of Orange, Zoa L. Rockenstein, of St. Cloud Minn.; grandsons, River Rockenstein, of St. Cloud Minn., and Phillip Mays, of Atlanta Ga.; sister, Ellen Crown, of Chestertown Md.

Funeral services will be Friday, September 5, 2003, at 11 a.m., from St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Orange with interment in Culpeper National cemetery with full military honors by American Legion Post #330 and V.F.W. Post 2524 both of Culpeper. The Rev. Scott Hennessy will officiate. Preddy Funeral Home, Orange, is in charge of arrangements.

Bobby A Harlow

Bobby A. Harlow, 64, of Barboursville, died at midnight September 2, 2003, at University of Virginia Hospital. Bobby was loved by all and had many wonderful friends.

Survivors include sisters, Virginia Breeden, of Orange, Kathleen Shiflett, of Madison, Aleese Slachter, of Arlington, and Jean Lam, of Barboursville; brothers include, James Harlow, of Barboursville, Leland Harlow, of Culpeper, Shelton Harlow, of Round Hill, and Franklin Harlow, of Harrisonburg; numerous nieces and nephews too many to name.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, 2003, at Preddy Funeral Home in Orange, the Rev. Nellie Ramirez will be officiating.

Preddy’s Funeral Home in Orange is in charge of the arrangements. Family night will be on Friday, Sept. 5 from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Preddy Funeral Home, of Orange.

The family will like to extend a big thank you to Jean Lam his sister for the time and care she gave to Bobby.

Thomas D. Hopkins

Thomas Daniel Hopkins, 77, of Charlottesville, died September 2, 2003, in a local hospital.

Born August 10, 1926, in Charlottesville, he was the son of the late Samuel Edward, and Bessie Bell Marshall Hopkins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Betty Doris Marshall, Alice Marie Minter, and Edna Marion Grainger; and four brothers, Albert Sydney Hopkins, Warren Vincent Hopkins, Samuel Edward Hopkins Jr., and Harold Hopkins.

Mr. Hopkins was a veteran of WW II, serving as a marine in the Pacific Theatre. He received the Purple Heart. He was a retired plumber.

He is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Marshall Ayers; a niece, Sharon Ayers; and 11 other nieces, Sharon, Karen, Cheryl, Millie, Debbie, Patricia, Barbara, Helen, Pamela, Belinda, and Sigourney; and 5 nephews, Tommy, Larry, Lawrence Jr., Harold, and Franklin.

A funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday, September 5, at Teague Chapel. Interment icon will follow in Oakwood cemetery.

The family will receive friends this evening from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Teague Funeral Home.

Julian D. Johnson III

Julian David Johnson III, 59, of Gordonsville, died Wednesday, September 3, 2003, at his residence. He was born October 2, 1943, in Charlottesville and was a son of the late Julian David Johnson II, and Edmonia Mahanes Johnson. He was married to the late Alberta Harris Johnson. He attended Pleasant Plains Baptist Church in Louisa County. He worked for S.L. Williamson Paving Company in Charlottesville for 29 years before his retirement.

Mr. Johnson is survived by a daughter, Judy Johnson, of Gordonsville; son, Julian Johnson IV, and wife, Dorlisa both of Gordonsville; and six grandchildren, India Johnson, Irvin Johnson, Travis Johnson, Cornell Johnson, Larry Johnson, and Keith Johnson all of Gordonsville.

The family would like to thank everyone at the Martha Jefferson Hospital Hope Center in Charlottesville for their loving care and assistance given to our entire family during our time of need.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, September 6, 2003, at the Pleasant Plains Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery. The Rev. Marvin Jackson will officiate. The family will receive friends at home. Preddy Funeral Home, Gordonsville is in charge of arrangements.

Edith Mary Lang

A graveside funeral service for Edith Mary Cuddy Lang, will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Riverview cemetery with the Rev. Ed Leake officiating.

Arrangements are being handled by Hill and Wood Funeral Home.

Norma B. Poole

Norma Bryant Poole, 82, of Charlottesville, passed away on September 1, at Heritage Hall in Charlottesville. She was born October 12, 1920, in Crewe, Va., the daughter of the late Stephen, and Nina Bryant. She is preceded in death by her sister, Jackie Jenkins; and her grandson, Aidan Lederman.

She is survived by her former husband, Robert Poole Jr.; her three sons, Bobby, Bryant, and Trevis Poole, all of Charlottesville; her three daughters, Karen Lederman, and her husband, Tim of Castleton, N. Y., Monte Jane Cohen, and her husband Guy, and Lisa Pyron, and her husband, John, all of Earlysville; twelve grandchildren; one step granddaughter; and five great- grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., on Friday, September 5, 2003, at Park Street Christian Church, with interment in Holly Memorial Gardens. Pastor’s Larry Hastings, and Bill Copeland will officiate. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m., this evening at Hill & Wood Funeral Home in Charlottesville.

The family would like to thank all of Norma’s friends at Park Street Christian Church, and Woods Edge Senior Living for their support and companionship during her homebound years. You were a blessing.

Judson B. Trapnell

A memorial service for Judson B. Trapnell will be held Saturday, September 13, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Charlottesville Waldorf School, 1408 Crozet Ave., Crozet, Va. 22932, 434-823-6800.

Nancy M. Brooks

A funeral service for Nancy Delores Mawyer Brooks, will be held today at 10 a.m. at Hill and Wood Funeral Home with Mr. Lindsay Ellis officiating. Interment icon will follow at the Monticello Memory Gardens.

Katrina L. Brown

Katrina Lynn Brown, 15, of Troy, died August 30, 2003.

A funeral service will be held today at 1 p.m. at Hill & Wood Chapel with the Rev. Ed Leake officiating. Burial will be at Monticello Memory Gardens.

Hill & Wood Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Edith Mae Collier

Edith Mae Collier, 85, of Earlysville, passed away Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, at her home.

A funeral service will be held today at 1 p.m., at Ryan Funeral Chapel in Quinque, with interment to in Holly Memorial Gardens. Pastor Ellis Roach will officiate. Ryan Funeral Home, Quinque, is in charge of arrangements.

Nancy Carol Davis

Nancy Carol Davis, 58, of Barboursville, died Tuesday, September 2, 2003, at the University of Virginia Medical Center. Born September 2, 1945, in Johnstown, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Thomas E. Doubt, and the late Margaret Rayha Doubt.

She was a member of the Ruckersville Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Jonah M. Doubt Jr., of Barboursville; two daughters, Vicky Marie Zumstein and husband, Edward Allen of Dale City, Va., and Carol Ann Davis of Richmond; one son, Melvin Michael Davis of Barboursville; one brother, Dr. Thomas J. Doubt and wife, Kathleen of Richmond; one sister, Patricia Mitchell of Cleveland, Ohio. She was preceded in death by a sister Marjie Harris.

Memorial services will be Saturday, September 20, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the Ruckersville Baptist Church with private interment. Dr. Thomas Doubt and Rev. Kyle Clements will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service at Church.

Margaret L. Goodson

Margaret Lucille Goodson, 80, of Charlottesville, died September 1, 2003.

Born, August 7, 1923, in Charlottesville, Va., the daughter of the late Lawrence Tabey and Hester Durham Gianniny; and 2 brothers.

She was a member of the Moose Lodge and a member of Monticello Wesleyan Church.

Survivors include a son, Daniel Goodson of Elkton; three grandchildren, Daniel Goodson Jr., Margaret Shifflett, Donna Wimer; six great-grandchildren, Noah, Mollie, Cameron, Savannah, Eric and Aaron.

There will be no formal visitation but friends may visit at the funeral home.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, September 4, 2003, at Monticello Memory Gardens with Rev. Jim Moretz officiating.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1490 Pantops Mtn. Place, Charlottesville, Va. 22911.

Hill & Wood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Edgar Lynn Karn

Edgar Lynn Karn, 68, of Gordonsville, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2003. Born in Milford, Ill. Aug. 1 1935. He was the son of the late Harry Lee Karn, and Frankie Carter Karn. Edgar served his country in the United States Army, 1958-1960. He retired from Stauffer Chemical Plant Chicago Heights, after 30 years of service.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Karn of Gordonsville, and his first wife, Gloria Karn Brown of Chicago Heights, Ill.; one son, Timothy Karn of Chicago, Ill.; one daughter, Jennifer Karn of Chicago Heights, Ill.; four step-children, Inez Johnson, Cheri Gibbs, Louis Deavers, William Deavers; three grandchildren, Kristina, Deloris, and Desirea Smith of Chicago Heights, Ill.; one sister, Mary Pensinger of Wright City, Mo., and five step-grandchildren.

Memorial Service will be held at Rhoadsville Baptist Church, Rhoadsville, Va., Thursday, September 4, 2003, at 11a.m. Rev. Nancy Stanton McDaniel will be officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in the name of Mr. Karn to: Orange County Rescue Squad, 151 Berryhill Lane, Orange, Va. 22960, or Rhoadesville Baptist Church, 26042 Lafayette Dr., Rhoadsville, Va. 22542.

Edith Mary Lang

Edith Mary Cuddy Lang, 90, of Charlottesville, died on Monday, September 1, 2003, in a local nursing care facility.

Born September 23, 1912, in Eggleston, Va., she was the daughter of the late William T. Cuddy, and Helen Atkins Cuddy. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clifton M. Lang Sr.; a son, Clifton M. Lang Jr.; a grandson, Mark Lang; two brothers; and two sisters.

Mrs. Lang was a loving and caring homemaker, mother, and grandmother.

She is survived by daughter, Sandra L. Bingler of Palmyra; six grandchildren, Hugh Alvin Bingler Jr. of Covesville, Aaron Keith Bingler of Palmyra, Cary "Butterball" Lang of Charlottesville, Karen Spicer of Keswick, Lisa Bryant of Charlottesville, Sheryl Lang of Dyke; fifteen great-grandchildren; and a brother-in-law Roger Lang, and his wife Flo.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, September 4, 2003, at the Riverview cemetery with the Rev. Ed Leake officiating. The family will receive friends tonight 7– 8 p.m.

Arrangements are being handled by Hill and Wood Funeral Home.

Dabney L. Staton

Dabney L. Staton, 28, of Lake Monticello, died Tuesday, September 2, 2003.

Survivors include his wife, Danielle Via Staton; two daughters, Kylie, and Kiera Via; one son, Ryan Loving; his parents, Dabney R. Staton, and Sandra T. Staton, of Scottsville; two sisters, Rene Isenhour, and Sherry Shifflett; four brothers, Ronnie Steele, Darryl, Craig, and Dane Staton; several nieces and nephews.

He was employed by Bailey Printing, Charlottesville, and was on the Sir Speedy Softball Team.

The family will receive friends on Friday, September 5, 2003, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Covenant Church of God on Rio Road, Charlottesville. A funeral service will follow at 7 p.m., with Pastor Harold L. Bare Sr., Ph.D., officiating. Interment icon will take place 11 a.m. Saturday, September 6, 2003, at Scottsville cemetery. There are no calling hours scheduled at the funeral home. Arrangements are by Thacker Brothers Funeral Home, Scottsville.

Nancy M. Brooks

Nancy Delores Mawyer Brooks, 57, of Charlottesville, died on Sunday, August 31, 2003, at University of Virginia Hospital.

Born September 21, 1945, in Charlottesville, she was the daughter of the late Jeter Mawyer and Ashley Hooper Mawyer.

Mrs. Brooks worked as an administrative assistant with MZM of Charlottesville for the last three years. She was a retired Intelligence Specialist for the National Grounds and Intelligence Center after thirty five years of service. Her church membership was at Maple Grove Christian Church.

She is survived by her husband, Thomas N. "Buddy" Brooks of Charlottesville; three sons, Todd Nolting Brooks of New York, N.Y., Todd Via and his girlfriend, Dana of Roanoke, and Mark Nelson Brooks and his wife, Carol of Virginia Beach; a brother, Dick Mawyer of Crozet; and one granddaughter, Emma Elaine Brooks of Virginia Beach.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, September 3, at Hill and Wood Funeral Home with Mr. Lindsay Ellis officiating.

Interment will follow at the Monticello Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends at Hill and Wood Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m. this evening.

Katrina L. Brown

Katrina Lynn Brown, 15, of Troy, died August 30, 2003.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, September 3, at Hill & Wood Chapel with the Rev. Ed Leake officiating. Burial will be at Monticello Memory Gardens.

Edith Mae Collier

Edith Mae Collier, 85, of Earlysville, passed away Saturday, August 30, 2003, at her home. She was born June 10, 1918, a daughter of the late Edward and Bessie Shifflett Morris, her husband was the late Elie M. Collier. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley Davis, and a brother, Omie Morris.

She is survived by two daughters, Connie Jones, and Reva Davis of Earlysville; a sister, Ruth Snow of Greene County; three brothers, Wilson Morris, Otis Morris of Greene County, and Joe Morris of Baltimore Md.; seven grandchildren, Ronald Davis, Nelson Davis, Sheila Lamb, Kevin Collier, Sheri Collier, Brenda Gentry, and Amanda Jones; and 15 great-grandchildren, Timmy Lamb, Heather Lamb, Destiny Barnett, Christopher Barnett Jr., Elaine Collier, Nelson Jr. Davis, Sara Davis, Jason Davis, Jerry Davis, Michael Davis, Tyler Davis, Brianna Gentry, Jordan Gentry, Ashley Gentry, and Aden Collier.

A funeral service will be held 1 p.m., Wednesday, September 3, at Ryan Funeral Chapel in Quinque, with interment in Holly Memorial Gardens. Pastor Ellis Roach will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., this evening at the funeral home.

The family would like to say a special thanks to the Hospice of the Piedmont, for all their loving care for Mrs. Collier.
