John R. Thompson
John Ryan Thompson, 18, of Troy, Va., departed this life suddenly on Saturday, August 30, 2003. He was born in Charlottesville, Va., on November 20, 1984, the son of Sallie M. Thompson and the late Francis Joseph Thompson Sr.
He was preceded in death by his father, Frances Joseph "Joe" Thompson Sr.; his maternal grandmother, Mary "Virginia" Mills; maternal grandfather, John Reeves Mills; paternal great-grandmother, Mary Monroe; paternal grandfather, James Thompson Sr.; and a paternal uncle, Frankie Thompson.
He was a student at the Advanced Technical Institute in Virginia Beach, Va. He was a 2003 graduate of Fluvanna High School where he was a member of the Fluvanna County High School Band, and a Fluvanna County High School football player, and baseball player. He was a member of the Piedmont Baptist Church and served on the Usher Board.
He leaves to cherish his memory his mother, Sallie M. Thompson; three brothers, Joe Thompson Jr., Courtney Dwayne Thompson, and Lamont Byers; one sister Euphrenia Elise Woody; two brothers-in-law, James Dean Woody, and Andrew J. Bartsch; his grandmother, Harriett Thompson; numerous cherished aunts, uncles, and cousins; godparents, Walter and Anita Washington; a special friend, Lindsey Paige; and a host of other family friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September, 4, 2003, at Piedmont Baptist Church in Yancey Mills, Va. Interment
will follow in Oakwood cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening September, 3, from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Chapel of J.F. Bell Funeral Home.

Katrina L. Brown
Katrina Lynn Brown, 15, of Troy, died August 30, 2003. Born January 24, 1988, she was the daughter of Jeffrey Rae Brown and Deborah J. Dorman.
Katrina was a student at Fluvanna County High School and previously attended Charlottesville High School.
She is survived by her stepmother, Linda L. Brown; a sister Lanessa M. Brown of Troy; a brother Kyle E. Brown of Troy; half sisters Dawn Nalley, Marenia Ross, and Cynthia Ross all of Keswick; a step-sister Christy Roland of Dillwyn; paternal grandparents Ouida A. Brown, of Troy, and William E. Brown Jr., of Charlottesville; paternal great-grandmother, Christine M. Brown, of Charlottesville; maternal grandparents, Ellie and Gene Dorman, of Keswick; maternal great- grandmothers, Ollie Sprouse of Staunton, and Rosalie Dorman of Charlottesville; a special aunt Deborah Meraz Montoya of Nellysford; special uncles Samuel (Sammy) Brown of Troy, and Frankie Dorman of Keswick; and a host of uncles, aunts, and cousins.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, September 3, at Hill & Wood Chapel with the Rev. Ed Leake officiating. Burial will be at Monticello Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday evening at Hill & Wood Funeral Home.

Adeline Quirici Haggerty, 74, of Sun City West, Ariz., died Tuesday, August 26, 2003, in Glendale, Ariz.

Charles A. Thornhill
Charles Ashby Thornhill, 77, of Rappahannock, died Friday, August 29, 2003, at his residence. He was born August 11, 1926, in Slate Mills, to the late Charles Henry Thornhill and Lucy Elizabeth Bailey Thornhill.
Mr. Thornhill retired from Rochester Rope Corporation after 39 years as a rope maker.
Mr. Thornhill is survived by his wife of 56 years, Virginia Johnston Thornhill; and four daughters, Anne Carpenter, and her husband, Ronald, of Reva, Nancy Boyd, and her husband, Ronnie, of Madison, Mary Jane Gray, and her husband, Arthur, of Culpeper, and Linda Thornhill of Charlottesville; he is also survived by four grandchildren, Holly Baker, Ashby Carpenter, Justin Boyd, and Melissa Lynn Gray; additional survivors include a brother, Thomas Lindsey Thornhill, and his wife, Lottie, of Boston. He is also survived by his beloved dog, Tommy. He is preceded in death by a sister, Mary Elizabeth Moran; and a brother, Joseph Winfield Thornhill.
The family will receive friends today, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Mrs. Thornhill’s residence.

Barbara Abrahansen
Barbara Ann Patterson Abrahansen, 71, died at her residence at the Meadows in Crozet, Va. She was the daughter of the late Earl S. Patterson and Mary W. Patterson. She was preceded in death by one sister, Martha Jane Owens, two brothers, Edward Carlton Patterson and J.D. Patterson.
Barbara is survived by four sons, J.J. Abrahansen and his wife Susanne of Copenhagen Denmark, Christian Abrahansen of Paris France, Scott Abrahansen of Texas, and Steven Abrahansen and his wife, Alice of Georgia; also four grandchildren, Steven, Mani, Justin, and Christine. She is also survived by three brothers, Stanley Patterson, Franklin Patterson, and his wife Beulah, and Roger Patterson, and his wife Patsy; also three sisters, Katherine P. Coffee, and her husband Paul, Dorothy P. Jones, and her husband James, and Grace P. Morris, and her husband David.

Mary Bell Beasley
Mary Bell Beasley, 89, of Stanardsville, passed away Aug. 26, 2003, at a Charlottesville hospital. She was born April 1, 1914, in Greene County, a daughter of the late Mamie Lawson Collier, and Ed Collier, and Willie Morris. Her first husband was the late Davis Shifflett, and her second husband was the late Linnie Beasley. She is also preceded in death by two sons, Luther Shifflett and Randolph Shifflett.
She is survived by five sons, James Shifflett and his wife, Thelma, of Orange, Harmon Shifflett and his wife, Lucille, Kenny Shifflett and his wife, Audrey, Howard Shifflett and his wife, Doris, and Leon Beasley and his wife, Carla, all of Ruckersville; two daughters, Hattie Brill and her husband, Michael, and Joyce Wheeler and her husband, John, of Stanardsville; two stepdaughters, Esther Abel of Fredericksburg and Eunice Shifflett of Stanardsville; two sisters, Della Byram and her husband, Bruce, and Arlene Byram and her husband, Earl, all of Orange; 26 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, at the Nortonsville Pentecostal Church, with interment in Holly Memorial Gardens. Pastor Robert Akers and Brother Ellis Roach will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the church.

Betty M. Brown
Betty McDaniel Brown, 70, of Madison, died Friday, August 29, 2003, at her residence. Born May 28, 1933, in Graves Mill Virginia. She was the daughter of the late James O. McDaniel and Ruth Jarrell McDaniel, and the wife of the late Grady L. Brown.
She was a member of the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Haywood, volunteer at the Hospice of the Rapidan and a bank manager at the Jefferson National Bank in Madison.
She is survived by one daughter, Vicki Lynn Brown of Banco; one son, James D. Brown, and wife Deborah of Brightwood; one sister, Corrie M. Smith, of Madison; six grandchildren, Cody Brown, Sara Woodfolk, Caleigh-Ruth Brown, Merri Woodward, Erin Mitchell, and Danielle Dormer, all of Madison; three great-grandchildren, Autumn Dormer, Emilee Woodward, and Skylar Woodward, all of Madison.
Funeral service will be held 10 a.m., Monday, September 1, 2003, at the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Haywood, conducted by Rev. Brian Wagner with interment in the Etlan cemetery. Clara Mary Clark
Clara Mary Ayars Clark Of Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Fenton, Mich., passed away peacefully August 19, 2003.
She was born July 7, 1923, in Flint, Mich., the daughter of Harry and Anna McGrath Ayars. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Theresa Spohn and Gladys Higgins and a special uncle, Charles McGrath, all of Flint, Mich. She leaves behind her beloved husband and best friend of 61 years, Robert Lee Clark . They sure started something with 7 children, 22 grandchildren and 13 great- grandchildren.
Their children and spouses are Robert and Jeanne Clark of Aspen, Colorado, Gary and Josie Clark of Charlottesville, Michael and Irene Clark of Kent’s Store, Patricia and Dennis Harbin of Trevilians, Jeanne Hargraves of Charlottesville, Kathleen Clark also of Charlottesville, Richard and Cindy Clark of Cordell, Ga.
Grandchildren are Kristina Weiland, Suzanne Flory, Belinda Clark, Anthony Clark, Christian Clark, Ashley Clark, Amanda Clark, Michael Clark, Philip Clark, Amy Rangel, Denise Beynon, Lori Carpenter, Beau Harbin, Wade Harbin, Gregory Hargreaves, Kelly Hargreaves, Jaclyn Clark-Covert, Monica Clark-Covert, Erica Clark-Covert, Meghann Clark, Sean Clark and Jillian Clark.
Great-Grandchildren are Gavin Weiland, Bridger Flory, Logan Clark, Taylor Clark, Jessica Clark, Jason Clark, Brianna Rangel, Cheyenne Rangel, Riley Beynon, Dylan Beynon, Renee Campbell, Joshua Campbell and Rowan Harbin.
She also leaves two sisters, Anna Halpin and Evelyn Ayars both of Michigan along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Waleta H. Clark
Waleta Hunter Clark, 89, of Charlottesville, passed away Thursday, August 28, 2003, at Westminster-Canterbury of the Blue Ridge, where she had resided for six years. Wally was born November 21, 1913, in Bowling Green Fla., the daughter of James Irving Hunter, and Elsie Adalaide Vogler Hunter. She was valedictorian of her high school class, then graduated from nursing school in Jacksonville Fla. Wally met her husband, the late Henry Austin Clark Jr., at the Norfolk Naval Air Station while serving as a chief surgical nurse in the U. S. Navy during World War II.
During their forty-seven year marriage, Wally and Austin resided first in Flushing and the in Glen Cove, New York. Their summers were spent in Southampton, New York, where Austin owned and operated the Long Island Automotive Museum, which displayed his collection of antique cars. In pursuit of Austin’s passion for preserving old cars and automotive literature, the couple participated in tours and rallies and traveled extensively together. In addition, Wally was a devoted mother and grandmother and an avid bridge player, walker, and gardener. She loved having fun with her family and friends, and she habitually made short work of the New York Times Sunday crossword puzzle.
Wally is survived by her youngest brother, Orin C. Hunter, and his wife Annette, of Bartow Fla.; daughter Ann Clark Eddins, and her husband Jim of Charlottesville; son James Hunter Clark, and wife Kary of Vancouver, Wash.; son Henry Austin Clark III, and wife Pam of Greenwich, Conn.; and daughter, Cynthia Clark Alper, and her husband Barry of Minneapolis, Minn.; she leaves eight nieces, and nephews; eleven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter.
Services celebrating Wally’s life will be held in the chapel at Westminster-Canterbury of the Blue Ridge, on Saturday, September 20, 2003, at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her honor may be made to the WCBR Foundation Fellowship Fund, Westminster-Canterbury, 250 Pantops Mountain Road, Charlottesville, Va. 22911.
Esther M. Coleman
Esther Montague Coleman, 81, of 5243 Rockfish Valley Hwy., Nellysford, Va., died Thursday, August 28, 2003, at her residence.
She was born January 5, 1922, in Charlottesville, Va., daughter of John Jay Coleman and Virginia Lee Coleman.
She received her Bachelor Degree from Longwood College, and Masters and Doctorate in Education from the University of Virginia.
Miss Coleman was a longtime Medical Technologist for Dr. Andrew McLaughlin. She taught chemistry at Waynesboro High School. She was a member of Rockfish Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents. Surviving are her sister, Mrs. Jean Strafford of Waynesboro; two nephews, Richard and John Strafford, both of Richmond.
Funeral services will be private. There will be no public viewing or visitation at McDow Funeral Home. McDow Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Rodney L. Davis Jr.
Greene County investigative Sgt. Rodney Lee Davis Jr., 30, died Aug. 26, 2003, in the line of duty.
Born Jan. 26, 1973, in Newport News, son of Becky and Joe Angle of Carrollton, Ill., and the late Rodney Lee Davis Sr. of Gloucester, he was preceded in death by grandfather Sidell Bridgewater of Carrollton and a step-sister, Jacque Strunk.
A loving and devoted father and husband, he is survived by his wife, Kimberly A. Davis; sons, Logan Patrick Davis, Wade Christian Davis and a third son, Rodney Lee Davis III, who will be born in November; his grandmother, Amelia Bridgewater of Carrollton; and his mother and father-in-law; E.C. "Mac" and Diane McClintock of Ruckersville.
Rodney was an officer with the Greene County Sheriff’s Office for 2 ½ years, having been recently promoted to sergeant. He was a member of the Greene County SWAT team and the Greene County Search and Rescue Group. Rodney attended the First Christian Church in Charlottesville.
He is also survived by two sisters, Kim Meyer of Greenfield, Ill., and Michelle Zuskin of Newport News; step-sisters, Karen Angle of Grafton, Ill., Angie Hartshorn of Elsah, Ill., Jennifer Graham of Carrollton, Ill., and Tracy Strunk of South Carolina; a half brother, Joey Angle of Carrollton; a sister-in-law, Melanie McClintock of Ruckersville; a brother-in-law; Paul McClintock and his wife, Kristie, of Centreville; and a host of family and friends.
A funeral service will be held today, 6:30 p.m., at First Baptist Church, 735 Park St., Charlottesville, with Mr. E.C. "Mac" McClintock officiating. Interment
will be private.

James C. Faulkner, 32, of Stanardsville, passed away Tuesday, August 26, 2003, in Stanardsville.
He was born July 25, 1971, in Charlottesville, son of James E. Faulkner, and Lois Ann Faulkner of Stanardsville, besides his parents he is survived by his grandmother, Lucy Mae Thomas of Stanardsville; a daughter, Dajah Reanee Lam of Charlottesville; two sisters, Sharon Roxanne Allen of Cumberland, Va., and Ebony Inanina Faulkner of New York, N.Y.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Monday, September 1, 2003, at Shiloh Baptist Church of which he was a member, with interment in the church cemetery. Pastor Harrison Williams will officiate. Adeline Quirici Haggerty, 74, of Sun City West, Ariz., died Tuesday, August 26, 2003, in Glendale, Ariz.
Mrs. Haggerty, a homemaker, was born in Waterbury, Conn. She is survived by her husband, Robert of Sun City West, Ariz.; her son, Steven of Washington, D.C.; her daughters, Nancy Paonessa of Phoenix, Ariz., Patricia Haggerty of Denver, Colo.; a brother, Ivo Quirici of Barga, Italy; a sister, Maria Simpson of Boco Siega Point, Fla.; a grandchild, David Alex Paonessa, of Phoenix, Ariz.; a sister-in-law, Dorothy P. Haggerty of Lake Monticello; and a sister-in-law, Kathleen Dunlap of Lexington, Va.
The family will receive friends on Monday, September 1, 2003, from 6 to 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

Georgia L. Johnson
Georgia Lee Johnson, 39, of Henry Avenue, Charlottesville, died suddenly at home of a heart attack on Sunday, August 24, 2003.
Georgia Lee "The Motherbeast" was born August 19, 1964, in Daytona Beach, Fla., where she resided on and off until moving to the Charlottesville area in the fall of 2000. She was known and loved by many as a true romantic, full of endless passion, tireless strength, and a heart too big for its container. She may also be recalled as an avid lover of animals, a keeper of many pets, and indiscriminately a friend to all living things. Her professions included singer, songwriter, poet, police dispatcher, writer, photographer, defender of social justice, advocate of consumer rights, lover, fighter, and invaluably dedicated mother. As has been said, "to know her is to love her."
She is survived by her loving son and dear friend, Christopher R. Coello; long-loving parents, Judge William C. Johnson Jr., and Elfreda S. Johnson; ever supportive siblings, W. J. Temple Johnson, Caroline Johnson Bellis, and Thomas W. C. Johnson; inspired nieces, Jennifer Bellis, Corey Bellis, and Jessica Coello; best and only sister-in-law, Kimberly Coello; pampered kitties Maggie, Q, and Urchin; the only bird that can sing, "Low Rider" and "Beethoven’s 5th" in the same medley – Camus; and her irreplaceable beloved soul mate and Knight in Shining Armor, Marshal Ronningen.
A private family gathering will be held to celebrate her life and the wonderful and priceless impact she made on our lives.

Gladys Walker Miller
Gladys Walker Miller, 85, of Orange, died Friday, August 29, 2003, in the Culpeper Regional Hospital. Born October 4, 1917, in North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Arthur F. Walker, and the late Frances Adams Walker. Her husband was the late Walter Emmett Miller. Gladys was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She a member of Oak Chapel Baptist Church and Sunday School teacher. She was retired from American Silk Mill and Specialty Weavers.
She is survived by one son, Allen Randolph Miller, and wife Susie Hager Miller of Orange; three sisters, Ethel Blackenbaker and Gracie Rosson both of Orange, Elizabeth Davis of Gordonsville; grandchildren, Lisa Moore, and husband Randy, Pamala Gilley, and husband Tim, Tonya Haacke, and husband Rob; great-grandchildren, Gretchen Haacke, Lane Lohr, Logan Lohr, Olivia Haacke, Zachary Gilley; brother-in-law, Roy Williams of Charlottesville; one niece, seven nephews; five great-nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Nora Richardson, Callie Walker, and Pauline Williams; three brothers, Elvin Walker, Bradley Walker, and Rabbie Walker.
Funeral services will be Monday, September 1, 2003, at 11 a.m., from the Preddy Funeral Chapel, Orange, with interment in Graham cemetery. The Rev. George Sipek, and Rev. John Edwards will officiate.
