Evelyn G. Moseley

Evelyn G. Moseley quietly slipped away at the Chippenham Medical Center, Richmond, on Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003.

She is survived by a brother, Golden L. Sullivan; sister, Thelma S. Reid, who preceded her in death, and nieces and nephews.

She was retired from Phillip Morris in the 1980’s after many dedicated years of service.

Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003, at 10 a.m. at Mount Comfort cemetery in Alexandria.

Philip T. Mundy Jr.

Philip T. Mundy Jr., 76, of Springfield, formerly of Orange, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, in Fairfax of a heart attack.

Born August 15, 1927, in Orange, he was the son if the late Philip T. Mundy and late Pauline Martin Mundy. He was a graduate of Orange High School in 1946 and attended Strayer Business College in Washington D.C. He retired from Virginia Concrete with 38 years of service and served in the U.S. Army in Korea.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred A. Mundy; son, Scott A. King; nephew, Philip McClusky of Baltimore.

A graveside service will be Friday, Oct. 3, 2003, at 12 noon in Graham cemetery at Orange, conducted by Dr. Stanley Johnson.

A memorial service will be on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003, at 11 a.m. in the John Calvin Presbyterian Church in Annadale.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make contributions to the American Heart Association or Cancer Society.

Preddy Funeral Home of Orange is in charge of arrangements.

William Chappelear

William "Bill" Jay Chappelear, 53, of Zanesville, Ohio, passed away at 9:24 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, 2003, at Gencsis Bethesda Hospital emergency room in Zanesville following a sudden illness.

Bill loved life and so someone else may enjoy life he was an organ donor.

Bill was born November 27, 1949, in Zanesville. The son of M. Opal Murrey Chappelear of Zanesville and the late Orville F. Chappelear. A graduate of Zanesville High School, 1968, Muskingum Area Technical college with an Associates Degree in Applied Business in 1974, Cum Laude where he was Student Senate President and a member of the Golf Team. He attended Ohio State University and Ohio University. He was senior claims specialist for lightening Rod Western Reserve Group of Wooster, Ohio since 1991. Previously worked as an adjuster for RD Lutz and Associates 1978-1991. A US Navy Veteran of the Viet Nam War, member of First Christian Church where for the last 15 years he and his wife were leaders of the Bereavement Committee, Masonic Lodge of Amity #5F.& A.M., Amrou Grotto #45, American Legion Post 29, Elks Lodge BPOE #114, VFW Post 1058 and National Society of Professional Insurance Adjusters. He was past president of Zanesville Soccer Boosters and Southeastern Ohio Claims Club, past Commander of AMVETS #1992 for two terms and held other offices also, past President of Muskingum County Veterans Service Commissions, past President of Ohio Association of Independent Insurance Adjusters and present secretary-treasure of Muskingum County Veterans Council. Bill was a charter member of the Lindbergh Association. He loved life especially the outdoors such as golf, sporting events, yard work and the beaches of the Carolinas.

Bill is survived by his mother, wife, Nancy martin Chappelear; sons, James Matthew of Myrtle Beach and Mark Jay of Zanesville and adopted son, Allen "Spike" Jones of Columbus; sister, Karole (Michael) Swain of Elyria, Ohio; mother-in-law, Suzanne Martin of Zanesville; sisters-in-law, Becky S. Martin of Charlottesville, and Elizabeth M. (Mark) Graham of Zanesville; nieces and nephews, Deb (Bill) Weaver of West Lafayette, Ind., Bart (Maureen) Swain of Rocky River, Ohio and Lucas M. and Logan B. Graham of Zanesville; great nephew, Lain M. Weaver of West Lafayette, Ind.; Bill’s special pets, Beau, Fluzzie and Joker; also he has many special friends and co-workers.

Preceding Bill in death were his father, father-in-law, James R. Martin; aunts, Mary Murrey and Hazel Chappelear.

Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bryan Funeral Home, 2318 Maple Ave., Zanesville, Ohio 43701. Masonic services by Amity Lodge will be at 8 p.m. today.

Funeral service will be at the funeral home Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Dawn Remster officiating. A caring cremation will follow funeral service.

Memorial contributions may be made to Zanesville WWII Korean War Memorial, P.O. Box 392, Muskingum County Veterans Council, Zanesville, Ohio 43702-0392.

Roy Alvin Collier

Roy Alvin Collier, 78, of Charlottesville, died at his residence on Sept. 26, 2003.

He was born on June 9, 1925, in Greene County.

He is survived by one daughter, Sandi Collier-Bolt, and her husband, Gary, of Troy, Va.; two sons, Ronnie Collier, and his wife, Donna, of Charlottesville, and Scott Collier of Troy, Va.; one brother, Max McDaniel and wife Mary Lou, of Inwood, W.Va.; five sisters, Lucille Williams, and her husband, Denzel, of Springfield, Va., Lula Williams of Charlottesville, Madeline Largent of Winchester, Va., Margie Gill and her husband, Bill, of Alexandria, Va., and Doris Fraraccio of Chesapeake, Va.; three grandchildren, Jennifer Hyde, Jenna Easton, and Greg Collier; and one great-grandchild, Trevor Hyde.

He served his country in World War II and was a retired welder.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Hospice of the Piedmont, 1490 Pantops Mountain Place, Charlottesville, VA 22911.

Family will receive friends at the Anderson Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. this evening. A funeral service will be held at Crozet Baptist Church on Monday, Sept. 29, 2003, at 11 a.m. with Mr. Roger Browning officiating. Interment icon will follow in the Culpeper National cemetery, Culpeper, Va. with Rev. Greg Compton officiating.

Anderson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mary E. Cummings

Mary Elizabeth Davis Cummings (Toni) returned to be with our Heavenly Father on Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend to many in the Charlottesville area, where she had lived all her life.

Her greatest joy was found in being with her family. Evenings at home with her sweetheart, Bruce, and their seven children were a weekly event where memories and love were fostered, through the years, especially after the passing of Bruce, she loved gathering with her 27 grandchildren to sing favorite songs, study the scriptures and tell stories of the "good old days." She is remembered with love by her children, Marty Cummings (Carole) of Plano, Texas, Shannon Cummings (Lorri) of Pleasant Grove, Utah, Beth Fletcher (Tom) of Orem, Utah, Mike Cummings (Kim) of Greene County, Va., Calvin Cummings (Darlene) of Danville, Va., Enos Cummings (Deanne) of Ogden, Utah, and Eber Cummings (Sonia) of Newport News, Va.

Mary was known for her compassionate service and generosity for all who approached her in need. Her fresh baked rolls, casseroles, and applesauce cakes lifted the spirits of many for years. People would wait in line to purchase her home-baked goods in the family front yard bake sales.

She was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. For decades she led and participated in the children’s Primary Programs in the church and touched for good the lives of many youth. Her children and grandchildren have followed her example through faithful service to the church, their families and their communities.

Born Nov. 28, 1926, she was the second of seven children of Clarence Coleman Davis Sr. and Hattie Lillian Wells Davis of Afton, Va. She is remembered fondly by her sisters, Mable Pugh and Ruth Davis of Greenwood, Va., and Dorothy Herring of Charlottesville, Va., and her brother, Donald Davis of Batesville, Va. She is preceded in death by her husband, Martin Bruce Cummings, and her parents, her sister, Joyce Davis, and her brothers, Clarence Davis Jr. and Billy Davis.

In her youth she loved playing sports with her siblings and children. She played on her high school basketball team. In her later years, she loved following the UVa and BYU basketball and football teams and would often call her children to discuss the games. Her wisdom was passed to her children through short quotes and sayings that are still remembered. She will also be remembered as the checkers champion of King Street.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, at Teague Funeral Home in Charlottesville. Funeral services will be Monday, Sept. 29, at 1 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on Hydraulic Road. Interment icon will be at Riverview cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Missionary Fund for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, c/o Bishop John Oliva, 1635 Maiden Lane, Charlottesville, VA 22911. Clarence Germeroth

Clarence L. Germeroth, 87, of Orange, formerly of Vienna died Friday, Sept. 26, 2003, at The Culpeper Regional Hospital.

Born April 20, 1916, in Kansas, he was the son of the late Adam and Louise Germeroth. His wife was the late Norma Elizabeth Germeroth, and son, Richard Lewis Germeroth. He was also preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters. He was an Army Veteran of W.W.II and retired from the Federal Government.

Survivors include, one daughter, Edith Plaugher and husband, Ernest of Manassas; three sons, Darrel of Kan., Donald of Georgia, and Paul of Nokesville, Va.; and special nephew, Gerald Foster of Berryville, Va.; two brothers, Edwin of Kan. and Arnold of Md., three sisters, Mabel Burndt, Myrtle Kropp, and Alice Mizer, all of Kan.; six grandchildren, five step grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren, number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 1, 2003, at 2 p.m. from the Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church with Interment icon in the church cemetery. The Rev. Phil Gates, and the Rev. Valerie Ritter will officiate.

The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Preddy Funeral Chapel Orange.

Martha Lee King

Martha Lee King, 78, of Charlottesville, passes from this life on Sept. 27, 2003.

Born January 29, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Ernest E. and Ethel Chisholm King.

She is survived by a brother, Frank Chisholm King, of Crozet; a sister, Hazel Irma Clements, of Charlottesville; a brother-in-law, Ralph Kenneth Ballowe, of Richmond; many nieces and nephews; and her "special" family, the Allaires.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. at Oakwood cemetery, with Pastor Nickloas Sylva officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, from 7 to 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Hospice of the Piedmont, 1490 Pantops Mountain Place, Charlottesville, Va. 22911.

Earl Filmore Shiflett

Earl Filmore Shiflett, 77, of Gordonsville, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, at Martha Jefferson Hospital.

He was born Sept. 27, 1926, in Albemarle County, a son of the late George Filmore Shiflett and Ada Lee Powell Shiflett. Mr. Shiflett was retired from Herndon Chevrolet and was an honorary member of the Gordonsville Volunteer Fire Company and a member of the Orange Moose Lodge #2198.

He is survived by his wife, Verty May Rogers Shiflett of Gordonsville; four daughters, Lucille S. Huffman, and her husband, Carroll, of Gordonsville, Peggy S. Cromer and her husband, Bo, of Orange, Debbie S. Haney and her husband, Gaines, of Orange, and Wanda G. Horton and her husband, Mark, of Blacksburg, Laura M. Carter and fiancée Shaun Steppe of Orange, who was like a daughter to him; one sister, Bunie "Sis" Howard; eight grandchildren, Karen Goodman, Carroll "Bill" Hoffman Jr., Tiffany Barbow, Mandy Hopkins, Chelsea Haney, Caylen Haney, Jessica Horton, Lindsay Horton; and five great-grandchildren, Robbie, Alisa, Logan, Kenden, and Nicholas.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Shiflett; and a granddaughter, Kimberly Lynn Branham.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, at the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Orange, with interment to follow in Holly Memorial Gardens in Charlottesville. The Rev. Marilyn Spencer will officiate. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home and asks that memorial contributions be made to the Gordonsville Volunteer Fire Company, P.O. Box 297, Gordonsville, VA 22942.

Margaret E. Bryant

Margaret Estell Bryant, 74, died Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003, in Valley Health Care Center. She will be remembered as a strong, independent person who lived her life her way.

She is survived by two daughters, Carla Cox, of Atkins, Va., and Carol Ann Prince of Ruther Glen, Va.; two sisters, Clara Hernandez of Richmond, Va., and Imogene Burns of Virginia Beach, Va.; one brother, Howard Bryant of Richmond, Va.; one granddaughter, Amy Harper; several nieces, and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003, at Centenary United Methodist Church, Scottsville, Va. at 2 p.m. with Rev. James Radford officiating. Burial will be held at a later date. Seaver-Brown Funeral Service is serving the Bryant Family.

John T. Comfort Sr.

John Thomas Comfort Sr., son of the late Thomas and Annie Jones Comfort, was called home to be with the Lord at 4:45 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003, during his hospitalization at McGuire Veterans Hospital in Richmond.

John was born on Jan. 31, 1921, in Spotsylvania and attended Spotsylvania County Schools. He served four honorable years in the United States Navy. John became a member of Branch Fork Baptist Church in Spotsylvania at an early age. In his later years, he became a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church in Orange, Va.

On August 14, 1948, John was joined in holy matrimony to Mary Jean Richardson. This union brought forth two sons and two daughters. John worked with his father, Thomas Comfort Sr., at his sawmill. He later ran and operated his own sawmill for several years before working as a carpenter in the Washington Metropolitan area.

John leaves to cherish his memory a devoted wife, Mary Jean Comfort; two sons, John T. Comfort Jr. and Conrad D. Comfort, both of Orange, Va.; two daughters, Crystal M. Humes of Orange, Va., and Alyse C. Bullock of Waldorf, Md.; one daughter-in-law, Joyce A. Comfort; two sons-in-law, Gary Humes and Brian B. Bullock; one brother, Amon Comfort of Spotsylvania, Va.; four sisters, Eleanor Johnson of Willingboro, N.J., Ruth Richardson of Louisa, Va., Irene Tucker of South Boston, Va., and Jean Squire of Silver Spring, Md.; 11 grandchildren, Kevin Comfort, Tony J. Comfort, Carissa L. Comfort, Darryl B. Comfort, Shaunta N. Humes, Jonae N. Comfort, Tekisha S. Humes, Jerome Comfort, Marrissa Comfort, Aliyah T. Bullock, and Brian M. Bullock: eight great-grandchildren; one mother-in-law, Eleanor Richardson; nine sisters-in-law and nine brothers-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 29, 2003, at Shady Grove Baptist Church in Orange, Va. The family will receive friends from 12 noon to 1 p.m. prior to funeral services.

Wilma S. Crawford

Wilma Samontee Spears Crawford, 72, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003, at the University of Virginia Medical Center. She was surrounded by her devoted children as she went home to be with her Lord and Savior. She leaves behind a truly loving and devoted family that loved and cherished the time they spent doing for her throughout her illness.

Wilma was born Dec. 25, 1930, in Charlottesville, Va., to the late Richard B. and Mary Hawkins Spears. She was preceded in death by her brother, Richard B. Spears Jr.

She was a former member of Zion Union Baptist Church, where she was baptized at an early age. She attended and graduated from Jefferson High School. She was employed by Dr. and Mrs. Dammond and lawyer Richard Barrett and Mrs. Barrett for a number of years, after which she was then employed by the city of Charlottesville Recreation Department for 23 years. She retired from the department in 2001.

She is survived by three sisters, Barbara J. Williams, Yvonne S. Anthony and her husband, Billy, Ramonde T. Gardner and her husband, George.

She was a truly devoted mother of seven children, Mary Phoede James, Sharon Bendetta Crawford-Pitre, and her husband, Herman, Ila Samontee Crawford, Adair Louise Crawford, and Natalie Yvonne Crawford (Nonnie); two sons, Thomas James Crawford (T.J), and Randall Crawford (Randy); three grandchildren, Sherwanda Laneice James (Wee Wee), Sharon Telisa Vest, ( Ms. T), and Adrian Crawford; she leaves nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and a host of family and friends to mourn.

Wilma was a truly loving, caring mother and friend to her children and grandchildren. The children and grandchildren shall always remember her quick wit, her hugs and kisses, the wonderful Sunday meals (at Mom’s), her ability to meet every challenge head on, her independence and strength and most of all her faith in God.

The family would like to take this opportunity to express its sincere thanks to her C.N.A. and friend Maria Heath for her loving care of their mother during her illness, also a special thanks to her massage therapist, Mrs. Debbie Grainger, and other friends who called, visited and sent cards, flowers and all other acts of love. Mrs. Crawford will lie in state at the funeral home from 1 to 8 p.m. today. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. at Ebenezer Baptist Church with Dr. Rev. Elijah Hall officiating. Interment icon will follow at Oakwood cemetery. Services of comfort are entrusted to McClenny Funeral Service Inc., R.B and Doris A. McClenny morticians.
