Paula Irene Mell
A memorial service for Paula Irene Mell, formerly of Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C. and Howardsville, Va., will be held on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Christ Church, 900 Glendower Rd., Scottsville-Keene, Va.
Ms. Mell, 52, died, Saturday, Sept. 10, 2003, after a two-year valiant fight against breast cancer.
She is survived by her four children, Camille, Christopher, Aldo, and Alana; her mother, Virginia B. Mell, of Waynesville, N.C.; her brother and sister-in-law, John A. and Helena H. Mell, of Fredericksburg, Va.; the children’s nanny, Olga Caicedo, of Rockville Md.; and many friends and neighbors. She was a graduate of St. Andrews in Laurinburg, N.C., and Washington and Lee’s School of Law, and was a founder and partner in the law firm of Mell, Brownell & Baker, Washington, D.C. Carolyn Lillian Connor
Carolyn Lillian Morris Connor, 79, died Friday, September 19, 2003, at St. Joseph Hospital.
A native of Charlottesville, she lived in Savannah since 1949. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church and a member of the Landings Club, the Best of Friends and the Savannah Area Chapter of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Retired Officers Association.
She was survived by her husband, Col. John B. Connor, USAF (Ret) of Savannah; two sons, John B. Connor, III of Orlando, Fla. and Dr. Stephen B. Connor of Los Angeles, Calif.; a daughter, Carol A. Connor of Bluffton, S.C.; a sister, Evelyn Carroll of Marbury, Md.; and three grandchildren.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. today at Catholic cemetery.

Lavinia A. Johnson
Lavinia Annie Frye Johnson departed this life on Tuesday, September 23, 2003, at Charlottesville University Hospital of Charlottesville Virginia.
Lavinia was born March 27, 1926, in Madison. She was the 12Th daughter of 13 children born to the late Sidney and Annie Frye.
Lavinia was a loving and devoted mother and wife. She took her hand in marriage to the late James L. Johnson and she had four children, three daughters and one son. The late Jimmy Johnson, Alice Ruffner, Emma Kilby, and Ida Johnson.
She leaves to mourn her sister, Leola Kennedy, of Philadelphia Pa., and her three children, Alice Ruffner of Charlottesville; Emma Kilby of Culpeper, and Ida Johnson of Charlottesville.
She leaves to cherish her memories, her ten grandchildren, Renee Kilby, Linwood Kilby, Tina Flemming, Robin Newman, Lisa Ruffner, Stephanie Ruffner, Melissa Collins, Laura Fourtin, son-in-law, John L. Kilby and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 27, 2003, at Rock Hall Baptist Church with interment at Rock hall cemetery. Rev. Journey Beasley will officiate.

Wendell A. Madison
Wendell Allan Madison, 48, of Charlottesville, Va., departed this life on Monday, Sept. 22, 2003, at his residence. He was born Sept. 19, 1955, in Charlottesville, Va., the son of the late Walter T. Brown and Frances B. Brown. He was employed for twenty-nine years as a patient Care Assistant at Martha Jefferson Hospital, he was a graduate of Albemarle High School, class of 1973, he was a faithful member of Zion Union Baptist Church, and a member of the senior choir, the President of the Pastor’s Aide Club, and a member of the Charlottesville Cruisers who traveled with the church until his health would not allow him. He enjoyed cooking and spending time with family and friends.
He leaves to cherish his memory, three sisters, Barbara Ann Brown Eubanks, and her husband, Edward, of Stony Point, Va., Reva Brown Carr, and her husband, Benjamin of Stony Point, Va., and Eunice Brown Morrison, and her husband, Cecil of Roanoke, Va.; a devote cousin, Katherine J. Crawford; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Dr. Titus Pankey Jr.
Dr. Titus Pankey Jr. departed this life Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003, in Charlottesville. He was born on Nov. 20, 1925, in Hinton, W.Va., and was the son of the late Mr. Titus Pankey Sr. and the late Mrs. Anna Wesley Pankey, of Charlottesville. He graduated with honors from Jefferson High School in Charlottesville. He then worked as a Pullman porter for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway for a number of years before moving on to electrophoresis research while employed at the University of Virginia. He later served in combat with the Third Division, 65th combat Infantry Regiment, of the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
After returning stateside from Korea, he attended Howard University in Washington, where he graduated magna cum laude, receiving his bachelor of science degree majoring in physics. After receiving his master’s degree, he began research work in physics and cosmology for the Naval Research Laboratory. He later received his Ph.D. in physics, becoming one of only 10 black physicists in the world. After receiving his Ph.D., he continued his research work at the Naval Research Laboratory until retiring in 1982. He also was an associate professor in the Physics Department at Howard University and taught physics on the doctoral level. He had more than 30 research papers published in physics journals, and was the editor and publisher of a scientific newsletter, PBX Science. He was also a member of Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society, Beta Kappa Chi Scientific Honor Society, and was president of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity for several years.
On June 25, 1959, he married
Anita-Rae Smith, who also received her bachelor of science degree and medical degree from Howard University. During their 17 years of marriage, they had five children.
He was a well known cosmologist and physicist. After his retirement, he moved to Stony Point and continued his research at home. In spite of several serious injuries and illnesses, including a serious brain injury and kidney failure, Dr. Pankey remained in good spirits and was casually planning the restart of his science newsletter at the time of his death. He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by his son, Lance Corporal Alan Titus Pankey, of Milledgeville, Ga.; and sisters, Cora Pankey Spears, Louise Pankey and Martha Pankey Brown.
He is survived by his sister, Sally Pankey Wilson; four children and their supportive friends, Harriet Anna Pankey, Titus Pankey III and his friend, Iris Quarles, all of Charlottesville, Anita Pankey Woolfork and her friend, James Joyner, and Caesar Titus "Sam" Allen Pankey, of Milledgeville, Ga.; two grandchildren, Nicole Anita Woolfork, of Macon, Ga., and Roosevelt Woolfork IV, of Milledgeville, Ga., a nephew, Ralph Brown Jr., of San Francisco, his former wife, Dr. Anita-Rae Smith-Pankey of Milledgeville, Ga.; a sister-in-law, Cornelia Hairston Boone; and a host of cousins.

Felizitas Sturm Walker of Emporia died Thursday, Sept. 19, 2003.
Feliz, born in Germany, came to the U.S. after World War II with her late husband, Clayton Walker, formerly of Charlottesville.
She is survived by her sister, Gertrude S. Foltz, of Pennsylvania; brothers, Willie and Gerhardt, of Germany; a brother-in-law, Charlie Walker and wife, Gladys; and a longtime friend, Sally Bailey, all of Charlottesville.
A graveside service will be held today at 2 p.m. at Mt. Olivet Methodist Church.
Frances M. Wallace
Frances Mildred Rienecker Wallace, 100, of Charlottesville, died on Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003, in a local nursing facility. Born August 5, 1903, in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late William Henry Rienecker and Jenny Arnold Rienecker, her husband G. Dudley Wallace also preceded her in death.
She is survived by two sons, George Wallace and his wife, Cathy, of Palmyra, Va., and Robert Wallace, and his wife, Millie, of Reston, Va.; a sister-in-law, Rosemary Rienecker of Glenn Falls, N.Y.; six grandchildren, Jonathan Wallace, Matthew Wallace, Joseph Wallace, Robert Wallace, Joanne Hammond, and Mark Wallace; and eight great-grandchildren.
A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 26, 2003, at the Church of Incarnation, Charlottesville, with Father Gregory Kandt officiating. Harry Rogers Watson, 78, of Ruckersville died Wednesday, September 24, 2003, at his residence.
Born August 12, 1925, in Albemarle County and was the son of the late Frank Watson and Cora Rogers Watson.
Mr. Watson was a retired employee of Webster Brick of Somerset and a member of Knights Chapel in Barboursville.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Longley Watson, of Ruckersville; four daughters, Doris Shifflett and husband, Howard, of Ruckersville, Mabel Durham and husband, George of Charlottesville, Jessica Gipson and friend Bruce, Lorna Gipson and friend Danny, all of Ruckersville; two sisters, Irene Fisk, of Barboursville, Elsie Clatterbuck and husband, Charlie, of Charlottesville; four brothers, Delmer Watson and wife, Elizabeth, of Gordonsville, Frank Watson, of Barboursville, Alvin Watson and wife, Sandra, Lawrence Watson and wife, Virginia, all of Gordonsville; nine grandchildren, Lisa Goldman, Darryl Cook, Autumn Graves, George Durham III, Heather Parsons, Dana Watson, Shannon Deavers, Kristie Haney, and Leslie Morris; and eleven great-grandchildren. Emory H. Austin Jr.
Emory Hall Austin Jr., 74, of Charlottesville, died Sunday, September 21, 2003, in a local hospital. Born September 7, 1929, in Norfolk, he was the son of the late Emory Hall Austin, Sr. and Hazel Salyer Austin Alexander. A sister Caroline also preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife Suzanne Compton Austin; four children, Barbara A. Mallory, Carolyn A. Deverell, Jane H. Austin and Emory Hall Austin, III. He is also survived by a brother, Richard H. Austin and his wife, Jeanette of Greensboro, N.C.; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Emory served with the United State Army during the Korean Conflict. Following his discharge he worked as a trader on Wall Street. He then went to Norfolk to work in real estate as a broker. After moving to Charlottesville, he was an Administrator for Building and Grounds at the University of Virginia.
A funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday, September 25, 2003, in the Chapel of the Hill and Wood Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Long officiating. Burial will follow in Riverview cemetery.

William Hunter Dudley
William Hunter Dudley of Charlottesville, died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003, at the Martha Jefferson Hospital.
He was for many years a vendor for the Daily Progress and a popular and beloved carrier, delivering the daily newspaper in the downtown Charlottesville business area when it was an afternoon paper. He became the focus of national attention in 1981 when he was beaten and robbed of his life savings by hoodlums. The beating resulted in his being confined to nursing homes for his remaining years. Mr. Dudley had been widely respected for his insistence on working despite severe physical handicap, and the crime prompted an outpouring of donations. A Trust Fund was created which throughout his remaining years provided William with medical care, clothing, and personal articles beyond what was available from government health care and retirement programs.
Born December 2, 1921, at Birdwood in Albemarle County and christened Hunter William Dudley, he was the youngest of seven children of the late Francis Farrish Dudley, and James Eugene Dudley.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Benjamin Dudley and Bernard Dudley; and two sisters, Josephine Dudley and Mattie A. Dudley.
Mr. Dudley was a member of the First Baptist Church, Charlottesville. Burial will be at 11 a.m., Friday, Sept. 26, 2003, at Mooreland Baptist Church cemetery. Mr. Robert L. Essex of Orange, Va. 12055 Kendall Rd., departed this life on Sunday, Sept. 14, 2003.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Elizabeth Robertson Essex; his former wife and friend, Cecelia Essex; two sons, Lewis Essex, and Terry Ross; one daughter, Ida Wormsley; four brothers, Herbert, Peter, Clarence, and Scofield Essex Jr.; one sister, Ethel; two daughters-in-law; one son-in-law; two special friends, Carlos Lindsay, and Jeanette Lindsay; and a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren; and friends.
