James F. Grimes III
Jim Grimes, 55, a faithful servant of God and a man of great integrity who was devoted to his family, peacefully passed on to be with Jesus on Saturday, September 20, 2003.
Jim graduated from Lane High School in Charlottesville, in 1966. He attended east Carolina University and was employed by Barnes Motor Parts of Greenville for 25 years. He was also employed at Lawnmower Service Company of Greenville. He recently retired from Pecheles Ford of Washington, N.C.
Jim was preceded in death by his father, James F. Grimes Jr.
Jim is survived by his loving wife and soulmate, Ellen Grimes; mother, Mary P. Grimes, of Greenville; brother, Tommy Grimes and his wife, Kristin, of Charlottesville; sister, Mary Grimes, of Greenville; son John Kline and his wife, Denise, of Naples, Fla.; son, Rich Grimes and his wife, Mina, of Palm Bay, Fla.; son, Neil Wirhlin and his wife, Amy, of Greenville; daughter, Greer Suggs and her husband, Timothy of Clayton; daughter, Krista Wirthlin of Winterville; 14 grandchildren and on precious namesake, Jamie Elizabeth Suggs, due in February 2004.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Church of the Open Door Building Fund, 4584 Reedy Branch Rd., Winterville, N.C. 28590.
Memorial Service will be Saturday, October 4, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Farmer Funeral Service in Ayden. Service will be officiated by Pastor Greg Kennedy.

Muriel C. McMurdo
Muriel Corbett McMurdo, of "Fair Dinkum", Albemarle County, died Tuesday, Sept. 23. 2003. Born December 27, 1911, in Albemarle County, she was the daughter of the late Aston E. McMurdo and Lilian Corbett McMurdo, of Buena Vista, and was preceded in death by her two brothers, Cyril E. McMurdo and Montagu H. (Jack) McMurdo; and two sisters, Evelyn Milward and Lilian Leavel; she is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
After attending local schools, she taught riding and was secretary to the headmistress at Stuart Hall in Staunton. During WW II, she served in Australia and the Philippines with the Red Cross, she worked at Alderman Library, Citizen’s Bank, and the Textile Institute, she was a long time secretary and horse trainer for Mr. James Townsend at "The Riggory". Horseback riding, training, and showing horses were her first love.
She was a lifelong member of St. Margaret’s Guild Christ Episcopal Church, she was formerly a secretary of the English Speaking Union and delivered meals for Meals on Wheels.
Funeral service will be held on Friday, Sept. 26, 2003, at 1 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church on High Street. The Rev. Brian Vander Wel will officiate, burial will follow at Riverview cemetery. Dr. Titus Pankey Jr.
Dr. Titus Pankey Jr. departed this life Saturday night, September 20, 2003, in Charlottesville, Va. He was born on November 20, 1925, in Hinton, W.Va., and was the son of the late Mr. Titus Pankey Sr. and the late Mrs. Anna Wesley Pankey of Charlottesville, Va. He graduated with honors from Jefferson High School in Charlottesville. He then worked as a Pullman porter for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway for a number of years before moving on to electrophoresis research while employed at the University of Virginia. He later served in combat with the 3rd division 65th combat Infantry Regiment for the US Army during the Korean War.
After returning stateside from Korea he attended Howard University in Washington, D.C., where he graduated magna cum laude, receiving his bachelor’s of science degree, majoring in physics. After receiving his master’s degree, he began research work in physics and cosmology for the Naval Research Laboratory. He later received his Ph.D. in physics, at which time he was one of only ten black physicists in the world. After receiving his Ph.D., he continued his research work at the Naval Research Laboratory until retiring in 1982. He also was an associate professor in the Physics Department at Howard University and taught physics on the doctoral level. He had over thirty research papers published in Physics Journals and was the editor and publisher of a scientific newsletter, PBX Science. He was also a member of Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society, Beta Kappa Chi Scientific Honor Society, and was president of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity for several years.
He married
Anita-Rae Smith on June 25th, 1959, who also received her bachelor’s of science degree and medical degree from Howard University. During their seventeen years of marriage they had five children.
He was a well known cosmologist and physicist. After his retirement he moved to Stony Point, Va., and continued his research at home. In spite of several serious injuries and illnesses, to include a serious brain injury and kidney failure, Dr. Pankey remained in good spirits and was casually planning the restart of his science newsletter at the time of his death. He is preceded in death in addition to his parents, by his son, Lance Corporal Alan Titus Pankey of Milledgeville, Ga.; sisters, Cora Pankey Spears, Louise Pankey, and Martha Pankey Brown.
He is survived by his sister, Sally Pankey Wilson; four children and their supportive friends, Harriet Anna Pankey, Titus Pankey III, and his friend, Iris Quarles, all of Charlottesville, Va., Anita Pankey Woolfork, and her friend, James Joyner, and Caesar Titus "Sam" Allen Pankey of Milledgeville, Ga.; two grandchildren, Nicole Anita Woolfork, of Macon, Ga., and Roosevelt Woolfork IV, of Milledgeville, Ga., a nephew, Ralph Brown Jr. of San Francisco, Calif., his former wife, is Dr. Anita-Rae Smith-Pankey of Milledgeville, Ga.; a sister-in-law, Cornelia Hairston Boone; and a host of cousins.
A special thank you from the family goes out to the Stony Point Fire Department and Charlottesville Rescue Squad. Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 26, at Mt. Zion First African Baptist Church, 105 Lankford Ave., with Dr. Alvin A. Edwards officiating, interment will follow in the family cemetery on the "Old Home Grounds of the Burley Family" in Stony Point, Va. Betty L. H. Raines
Betty Lee Hutton Raines, 77, of Inwood W.Va., formerly of Charlottesville, died Monday, September 22, 2003, in Martinsburg W.Va. Born November 23, 1925, in W. Va. she was the daughter of the late Oscar F. and Dorothy Buckner Hutton. Her husband was the late Ray James Raines. Mrs. Raines was a retired Bookkeeper with Sears-Roebuck and Co. in Charlottesville.
Survivors include, one daughter, Jenny Garton and husband, Fred of Scottsville; one son, Timothy Raines of Inwood W.Va.; one brother, David Hutton of Tampa Fla.; two grandchildren, Douglas Dobbins and wife Tracy of Lake Monticello and Thomas Dobbins, of Charlottesville; two great-grandchildren, Cailin and Conner Dobbins both of Lake Monticello.
A graveside funeral service will be held Thursday, September 25, 2003, at 1 p.m. at the National cemetery in Culpeper with the Rev. John Farar officiating.

Victoria M. Spicer
Victoria "Vicki" Mitchell Spicer, 95, of Charlottesville, formerly of Cismont, died September 21, 2003, at Westminster Canterbury.
Born January 28, 1908, in Orange County, she was the daughter of the late Luther Thomas and Dora Miller Mitchell. Her husband, Clifford Spicer, also preceded her death.
She was a graduate of Orange High School and Richmond Business School; member, Trustee and Treasurer of Preddy’s Creed Baptist Church, was past secretary and Sunday School teacher for many years; past President of her Home Extension Club; a Brownie Scout Troop Leader, and later Girl Scout Leader; held life memberships in Boy Scout Alumni Family, Gordonsville Historical Society and Miller School Alumni Association; a member of the Gideon’s International Auxiliary, Charlottesville, member of the Order of Eastern Star, Gordonsville Chapter 186, and a past matron member of University of Virginia Hospital Auxiliary, and past president of Gordonsville Senior Citizens Club.
Survivors include two nieces, Mrs. H. Walker (Virginia) Sanford, of Gordonsville, and Mrs. R. Heath (Faye) Richardson of Roanoke; a nephew, O. Kendall Smith, of Orange; one foster daughter, Betty Jo Johnson of Lynchburg, and a number of nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday, September 26, 2003, at Grace Episcopal Church cemetery, Cismont with Rev. Betty Norford officiating.

Felizitas S. Walker
Felizitas Sturm Walker of Emporia, died Thursday, September 19, 2003.
Feliz, born in Germany, came to the U.S. after World War II with her late husband, Clayton Walker, formerly of Charlottesville.
She is survived by her sister, Gertrude S. Foltz of Pennsylvania; brothers, Willie and Gerhardt of Germany; a brother-in-law, Charlie Walker and wife, Gladys; and a long time friend Sally Bailey, all of Charlottesville.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, September 25, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Olivet Methodist Church.

Nicholas DeMaso
Nicholas DeMaso of Williamsburg, Va. died Thursday, December 2, 2003, at home after a long illness. Mr. DeMaso was born April 15Th, 1923, in Staten Island, N.J. to the late Vincent and Fannie DeMaso.
Nicholas was married
to the late Theresa LaRocca DeMaso on July 17Th, 1943, in Brooklyn, N.J. He served in the United States Army Air Corp during World War II, earning six Bronze stars, an Air Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster and a Purple Heart. Mr. DeMaso was an avid card player and golfer and retirement, but most important was his love for his family, his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mr. DeMaso was predeceased by his wife, Theresa in 2001. He is survived by his children, John DeMaso and wife, Brenda of Charlottesville; daughter, Carol Coleman and her husband Chip of Culpeper; a son, Vincent DeMaso and his wife carol of San Ramon, Calif.; daughter, Regina Brinkman and her husband, Pete of East Brunswick N.J. and daughter Patricia Verduin and her husband Doug of Glen Rock, N.J.
Additional survivors include 12 grandchildren, Russell Robertson and his wife, LeAnn, Blake DeMaso and his wife, Lisa, Christian Swift, Nicholas Swift, Meredith DeMaso, Lauren Verduin, Amanda Brinkman, Connie DeMaso, Ashley Coleman, Thomas DeMaso, Erika Brinkman and Natalie Verduin; and three great grandchildren, Ryan and Anna Robertson and Grace DeMaso.
He is also survived by a brother, Vincent DeMaso who resides in Fla. He was predeceased by a brother, Paul DeMaso in 2003.
The family will receive friends Friday, December 5, 2003, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Richmond Road at Harrison Avenue, in Williamsburg, Va. Fr. Antonio Malabad will be officiating.
Interment will be held at a later date in Arlington National cemetery in Arlington, Va.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Williamsburg Hospice House at Hospice Support Care, 4445 Powhatan Parkway Williamsburg, Va. 23188.

Jessie Dunkum Dunn
Mrs. Jessie Dunkum Dunn, 91, of Louisa died Monday, December 1, 2003, at the Martha Jefferson Hospital.
Graveside service will be held Friday, December 5, 2003, at Hillcrest cemetery, Louisa, with the Rev. Michael Kubat officiating. The family will receive friends after the service.

George P. Griffin, Jr.
George Porter Griffin Jr., 67, of Baton Rouge, La. formerly of Carysbrook/Fork Union, Va. died Monday, December 1, 2003, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, La.
He preceded in death by his parents, Florence Pettis and George Porter Griffin, Sr. and his first wife, Francis Cerclevich. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Q. Griffin of Baker, La.; his daughter, Bonnie G. Moore and her husband, Frank, of Pride, La.; his son, Robert M. Griffin and his wife, Annette, of Murfressboro, Tenn.; four step-children: Cela J. Reynolds, Denise J. Hembree, Karen J. Bahm, and Dennis Johnson; his brother, Archer Pettit Griffin and his wife, Patsy, of Fork Union, Va.; three grandchildren, Shawm Bibby, Thomas Turner, and Nickalus Turner; four nieces, Linda Griffin of Charlottesville, Va., Gayle G. Noble of Buckingham, Va., Kim G. Pierce of Richmond, Va., and Gwen G. McNeely of Danville, Va.; and a special friend, Dwayne Crumholt of Baton Rouge.
He was a Veteran of U.S. Army, an avid fisherman, loved bluegrass music and enjoyed traveling.
He retired in 1993 as Chief Field Engineer after 38 years of service with Stone and Webster Engineering Co.
Funeral services will be held December 6th at 11 a.m., at Bethel Baptist Church, Palmyra, Va., conducted by the Rev. Frank Schumaker and the Rev. Buddy Woodson. Interment

Saylor Austin Hatter, 66, of 370 Horseshoe Circle, Stuarts Draft passed away Tuesday evening, December 2, 2003, at his residence.
Survivors include his wife, Janice Turner Hatter; one son, Matthew A. Hatter and his wife Heather of Clifford, VA.; three daughters, Sherry Hatter-Miller and her husband Eric of W. Salem, Ohio, Deborah Kurnat and her husband Frank of Warminister, Pennsylvania, and Lisa Fisher and her husband Frankie of Greenwood, Virginia; four brothers, Wilbur Hatter and his wife Linda of Nellysford, Alton Hatter of Waynesboro, Jerry Hatter and his wife Caroline of Nellysford, and Page "Button" Hatter and his wife Kathy of Fauber; four sisters, Jackie Wimer of Waynesboro, Charlene Lowery and her husband Johnny of Stuarts Draft, Sarah Urbandski and her husband Ed of Chicago, and Shirley Varney and her husband Ray of Chicago; five grandchildren, Colton Hatter, Tamra Fisher, Terri Fisher, Andrea Kurnat, and Christopher Kurnat and numerous nieces and nephews.
Service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Mt. View Mennonite Church by Pastor Earl Monroe with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

Inez Owen
Inez Pearl Tapscott Owen, 83, of 2381 Coffmantown Rd., Woodstock, passed away Tuesday, December 2, 2003 at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital, Woodstock.
Born August 20, 1920 in DeLand, Illinois, she was the daughter of the late Sydney C. Tapscott, Sr. and Marie Mansfield Tapscott. She was a homemaker who was married
to the late Reginald T. Owen, Sr. Mrs. Owen was a member of Narrow Passage Assembly of God Church and was active with the Women’s AGLOW and other church activities.
Survivors include two sons, Reginald Tisdale Owen, Jr. of Culpeper and George F. Owen of Reedville; one daughter, Patricia Brian of Woodstock; three sisters, Rosemary Harrison of Scottsville, Bess Butler of Crozet and Louise Smith of Portsmouth; one brother, Sydney Tapscott, Jr. of Charlottesville; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday at Dellinger Funeral Home, Woodstock at 2 p.m. Saturday at Thacker Brothers Funeral Home, Scottsville. Pastors Gerald and Dottie Holden will officiate. Burial will follow in Scottsville cemetery.

Eleanor Corry Ward
Eleanor Corry Ward, 90, formerly of New Vernon, N.J. and Leesburg, Fla., died November 24, 2003, in Charlottesville, Va.
Born February 20, 1913, in Riverton, N.J. She was the daughter of the late Reuben Corry and Effie Williams Corry. She was the wife of the late Ernest Geoffroy Ward who found E. Geoffroy Ward Real Estate.
She is survived by four sons, Edward A. Ward and wife, Sally, John Corry Ward and wife, Mindy, Richard S. Ward and wife, Margo, Nicholas G. Ward and wife, Jean; eight grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. A fifth son, E. Geoffroy Ward Jr. Precedeceased her.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Preddy Funeral Home in Madison is in charge of arrangements.
Elizabeth M. Bibb
Virginia Elizabeth "Lizzie" Melton Bibb, 81, of Charlottesville, died Nov. 30, 2003.
Born on Aug. 28, 1922, in Troy, Va., she was the daughter of the late Chester and Lenora Bunch Melton. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clyde A. Bibb; a brother, Curtis Melton; and two sisters, Mary Frances (Molly) Melton Glass and Mildred Melton Bibb Bishop.
She was a member of the Martha Jefferson Hospital Volunteers, VFW Post 1827 Auxiliary since 1945 and Beaver Dam Baptist Church. She was retired from Leggett’s Department Store after 30 years of service.
Survivors include her children, Barry A. and Pat Bibb of Scottsville and James (Jimmy) and Terri Bibb of Charlottesville; three grandchildren, Jeffrey Bibb of Scottsville, Elizabeth Ann Bibb and Michael Bibb of Charlottesville; two great-grandchildren, Charity Bibb and Bryan Bibb of Scottsville; a sister, Faye Davis of Williamsburg, Va.; two sisters-in-law, Elsie Gentry and her husband, Granville, and Frances Meadors of Charlottesville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the employees at Martha Jefferson Hospital, especially the Hope Cancer Center and Dr. Cirenza for the care they gave Elizabeth. We would also like to thank the employees at Heritage Hall Nursing Home for their care and concern.
