Mary Sue H. Burch

Mary Sue Harrell Burch, 77, of Danville, died Monday, Dec. 1, 2003, in Charlottesville at the home of her son after a short illness.

Born July 2, 1926, in Asheville, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Thomas Costen Harrell and Susan Dupay Harrell.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, James Franklin Burch; her three sons, James F. Burch Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth, of Charlottesville, Thomas H. Burch and his wife, Sandy, of Danville, and Peter S. Burch of Newport News; her sister, Agnes Smith, and her husband, Demming, of Raleigh, N.C.; sister-in-law Sarah and her husband, Romas Shuping, of Salisbury, N.C.; one aunt, Agnes Sheehan of Basking Ridge, N.J.; four grandsons, two granddaughters; and one great-granddaughter.

Mary Sue was raised in Asheville, Mt. Airy, and Greensboro, N.C., and graduated in 1947 with a degree in biology from Greensboro College.

On Jan. 28, 1950, she married James F. Burch of Salisbury, N.C. During the early years of marriage, Mary Sue and Jim lived in the Washington, D.C., area and later in San Diego, Calif., when he was called back into the Navy for the Korean War. After his discharge from the Navy, they enjoyed living in Greensboro while he worked at Cone Memorial Hospital.

Mary Sue and Jim moved to Danville in January 1957 when her husband took the position of laboratory director at Danville Memorial Hospital. She taught biology at Stratford College for several years in the 1960s as well as second grade Sunday school at Mt. Vernon Methodist Church, where she was a member.

Mary Sue was a person of many interests and an avid reader on many topics. She and her husband shared a delight in travel and gardening. They saw much of the world together and with family. Their home landscape of rhododendrons and azaleas put on a glorious display each spring, which they delighted in sharing with others. Many gardens in Danville have plants they rooted and gave to interested friends. Mary Sue also enjoyed the fellowship and programs of the Wednesday Club and she was an enthusiastic docent at the Danville Museum.

Mary Sue was a wonderful hostess. Family and friends will always remember her delicious home-cooked meals. She was the very center of her family, which she kept very close with warm and frequent letters. Her home was the place for special family gatherings remembered with great joy by all.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003, at Mt. Vernon Methodist Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Harrell Scholarship Fund at Greensboro College, established by Mary Sue’s parents and very special to her.

Teague Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Betty Lee Cromer

Betty Lee Cromer, 57, of Charlottesville, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, at her home.

Born on April 22, 1946, in Albemarle County, she was the daughter of Mamie Hunt Shifflett and the late Thomas C. Shifflett. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Gentry.

Betty was a surgical nurse at Virginia Ambulatory Surgical Center. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church for many years and sang in the church choir. She was devoted to her church family and friends and loved them all.

She is survived by her two daughters, Allison Cromer and Beverley Cromer and their father, Leon H. Cromer; one granddaughter, the "love of her life, " Devin Brooke Morris; two sisters, Judy Terry and her husband, Lloyd, of Monroe, Ga., and Linda S. Tomlin of Charlottesville; a brother, Thomas C. Shifflett Jr. and his wife, Alice, of Hyattsville, Md.; a very special friend, Kay Sclater; and a very special sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Bonnie and John Tyler.

Betty will be missed by all who knew her.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evening at the Teague Funeral Home.

A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Rick Sadler officiating.

Judith R. Faris

Judith R. (Robin) Faris, 40, died Friday, Nov. 28, 2003.

Born on July 4, 1963, in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of John N. and Judith M. Faris of Amherst.

Robin graduated from Sweet Briar College and worked toward a graduate degree in early childhood education at Lynchburg College. She was a member of Amherst Presbyterian Church. She was elected to the Delta Kappa Gamma Honorary Education Society. She had been employed by State Farm Insurance Company as a field claims representative in Tyson Corner, Va., and also in Atlanta County, and at the time of her death was teaching at Bright Beginnings private school in Charlottesville.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by a sister, Virginia Faris Weaver and her husband, Devin, of Snellville, Ga.; two nieces, Rachel and Sarah Weaver; two nephews, Zachary and Nathanael Weaver, all of Snellville, Ga.; an uncle, Robert M. Faris and his wife, Ann, of North Garden, Va.; two aunts, Teel Faris Grant of Charlottesville and Martha Faris Ware of Waynesboro; several cousins and a special friend, John Pulliam, and his daughter, Victoria, of Faber.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at Amherst Presbyterian Church with the Rev. D.H. Rodgers officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. at the Mooreland Baptist Church cemetery, North Garden, Va.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Driskill Funeral Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the Amherst Presbyterian Church Building Fund, P.O. Curtis G. Fitzhugh Sr.

Curtis Grubb Fitzhugh Sr., 93, of Gordonsville, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, at his residence.

He was born on March 1, 1910, in Hanover County and was a son of the late Catlett Conway Fitzhugh and Florence Grubb Fitzhugh.

Mr. Fitzhugh was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Gordonsville, and former vestry member, life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #7638, 50-year member of the Gordonsville Volunteer Fire Company, charter member of the Gordonsville Lions Club and recipient of Lions International Melvin Jones Service Award. He was a Army veteran of WWII, serving in Europe with the 3rd Armored Division, participated in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes and the Rhineland Campaigns.

Mr. Fitzhugh is survived by his wife, Edith Gooch Fitzhugh of Gordonsville; one son, Curtis G. Fitzhugh Jr. and wife Gayle of Orange; one daughter, Ann Fitzhugh Schwind and husband Bill of Gordonsville; and five grandchildren, Conway Fitzhugh and Kristina Fitzhugh of Orange, Eric Schwind, Elizabeth Schwind, Sara Schwind Chiles and husband John, all of Gordonsville. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Henry Fitzhugh and Norval Fitzhugh.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, at Christ Episcopal Church, Gordonsville, with interment in Maplewood cemetery, Gordonsville. The Rev. Kate Chipps will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 this evening at the Parrish House at Christ Episcopal Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Piedmont, 1290 Pantops Mountain Place, Suite 200, Charlottesville, Va. 22911. Preddy Funeral Home, Gordonsville, is in charge of arrangements.

John A. Mendler

John Arthur Mendler, 64, of Charlottesville, Va., died on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, at his residence.

Born on Feb. 5, 1939, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of the late John A. Mendler and Augusta Deimer Mendler. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Joan Mendler.

A 20-year resident of Centerport, N.Y., he was a 1961 graduate of St. John’s University with a bachelor’s degree in accounting.

He is survived by two daughters, Mary Ellen Chiumento and her husband, Michael, of Ruckersville, Va., and Karen Nastar and her husband, Peter, of Glen Allen, Va.; a son, John Arthur Mendler III of Centerport, N.Y.; two sisters, Carol Mendler of Brookfield, Conn., and Marilyn Goppel and her husband, Frank, of Hartford, Conn.; one brother, Richard Mendler, and his wife, Joan, of Lynbrook, N.Y.; and six grandchildren, Alexix, Taylor, Caneron, Erin, Peter James, and Michael.

A funeral Mass will be held at 12:15 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, at the Church of the Incarnation, Charlottesville, with Father Gregory Kandt officiating.

The family will receive friends at Hill & Wood Funeral Home tonight from 7 to 8. An interment service will also be held in the chapel of the Saint John’s cemetery in Middle Village, N.Y., at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 8, 2003.

Arrangements are being handled by Hill & Wood Funeral Service.

Robert A. Nash

Robert Arthur Nash, 83, of Echo Ridge, Charlottesville, Va., died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003, following an extended illness.

He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of Florence Estell Hunt and John Wesley Nash. Three brothers preceded him in death: Roland, Charles and Harold.

Robert had a special love for the opera and he helped write the book "The New York City Opera Sings."

Robert was educated in the Pearl River, N.Y., public school system and was a veteran of World War II.

He is survived by one nephew, Robert C. Nash, and his wife, Mary Lou, of Palm City, Fla.; three great-nieces, Bonnie Bawel and her husband, Paul, of Yardley, Penn., Suzanne Sutherland and her husband, Jim, of Highlands Ranch, Col., and Jenny Nash of Tallahassee, Fla.; three great-great-nephews, Michael and Tommy Bawel and Eric Sutherland; and by John W. Williams, a very devoted friend of 33 years.

Robert worked at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Airport for 15 years until he became legally blind from macular degeneration, after which he worked for three years at McDonalds.

Our special thanks to Dr. Timothy Short of the Earlysville Family Health Center, Peter Del Priore, rehabilitation counselor, Dr. Alexander A.M. Schult of Martha Jefferson Hospital, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Watson of Glen Echo Farm and Hospice of the Piedmont.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Hospice of the Piedmont and the Virginia Department for the Visually Handicapped.

Hill & Wood is in charge of the remains. Burial will be in Arlington cemetery. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Cynthia Oldmixon

Cynthia Helen Detrick Oldmixon, 74, of Charlottesville, died at her home with her family nearby on Nov. 30, 2003, after a lengthy illness.

She was born in Columbus, Ohio, on Feb. 5, 1929, to the late Forrest Roedel Detrick and Margaret May Smith Detrick of Worthington, Ohio. She attended the Columbus School for Girls. After graduating from Worthington High School, she attended Ohio Wesleyan University and The Ohio State University, where she majored in journalism.

Upon her marriage in 1950 to the late Andrew G. Oldmixon, she resided in Colts Neck, N.J., where she raised their children, William Oldmixon and Cynthia Oldmixon.

Cynthia had a diverse career as a journalist, licensed real estate agent, paralegal, and bank administrator. In her journalism career, she was a newspaper reporter for the Zanesville Signal and was a feature writer for the Columbus Dispatch. Additionally, she was the executive assistant for Portman Properties, which was responsible for the construction of the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Times Square, New York City. Upon her retirement she came to live in Virginia with her daughter Cynthia and family.

Cynthia was a vibrant woman who enjoyed life. Her hobbies included aviation, sailing, photography, traveling, history and literature. She belonged to the Daughters of the American Revolution, and was a delegate for the Republican Party for the 1980 election of Ronald Reagan for president. She was involved in numerous volunteer and civic organizations, including Open Door, hospital volunteer work, and the initiative to save the Battleship USS New Jersey. Cynthia was also a devoted and active member of the Colts Neck Reform Church.

Her family was the most important part of her life. She will be missed by her brother, John Detrick, and his wife, Helen Detrick, of Delaware, Ohio; her daughter, Cynthia Jamison, and son-in-law, Scott Jamison, of Charlottesville, Va., and three grandchildren, Andrew Jamison, Maggie Jamison, and John Jamison. Cynthia was also especially proud of her nieces, nephews and cousins. She is also predeceased by her brother William Roedel Detrick and her beloved son William Andrew Oldmixon.

A memorial service will be held at the Colts Neck Reformed Church, Colts Neck, N.J., on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, at 11 a.m. Immediately following the service the family will receive friends at Fellowship Hall at the Church.

The family thanks Hospice of the Piedmont for the services and support provided and Valerie Gibson for her comfort and care of Cynthia in her final days. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 3042-D Berkmar Drive, Charlottesville, VA 22901 or to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1490 Pantops Mountain Place, Charlottesville, VA 22911.

Jackie Robinson

Jackie Robinson, 60, of Oxen Hill, Md., passed away on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, following a lengthy illness.

He worked for Nowell Catering until moving to Maryland. He was born in Darlington County, S.C., to the late Harvey and Marie Robinson of Harsville, S.C.

He is survived by one son, Omar Robinson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two sisters, Overseer Lila Mae Agee of Oxen Hill, Md., and mother, Eyelena R. Michie and her husband, Bishop, Robert J. Michie II of Charlottesville, Va.; two brothers, Bishop LeRoy Robinson of Hartsville, S.C., and James Robinson and wife Ethel of Oxen Hill, Md.; two grandchildren, many cousins, nieces, and nephews and a devoted friend, Mary Brown of Charlottesville.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, in Oxen Hill, Md., with Bishop Robert J. Michie II officiating.

Thomas Andrews Jr.

Thomas Franklin Andrews Jr., 76, of Charlottesville, died Thursday, November 27, 2003 at the Trinity Mission Nursing Home in Charlottesville.

Born January 14, 1927 in Trenton, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Thomas Franklin Andrews, Sr. and Elma Marie Spivey Andrews. Mr. Andrews was a member of the Mineral V.F.W. Post 8947, the Gordonsville American Legion Post 1999 and the Disabled Veterans of America.

He is survived by his wife, Marie L. Andrews of Charlottesville; one daughter, Terry Harrison of Franklin; four sons, Cecil Lee Andrews of Bailey, CO, Thomas Ritchie Andrews of Richmond, Gordon Dale Andrews of NC, Joseph Russell Andrews of Colorado Springs, CO; one step-son, David Morris and wife, Sue of Ruckersville; a special son, Larry Snead and wife, Marie of Charlottesville; nine grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and special friends, Skip and Karen Veasey and their sons, Justin and Nathaniel of Charlottesville.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday December 1, 2003 at Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Orange with interment to follow in Holly Memorial Gardens in Charlottesville. The Rev. Larry Winfield will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. on Sunday evening at Preddy Funeral Chapel in Orange.

Anne C. Bender

Anne C. Bender, 91, passed away on November 22, 2003 in Charlottesville. Mrs. Bender lived in New York until 2002, when she moved to Virginia. She was in good health and active until her sudden death.

Mrs. Bender graduated from the City College of New York School of Business and Civic Administration (now Baruch College of CUNY). She taught in New York City public high schools and, after her retirement, in the Institute for Retirees in Pursuit of Education at Brooklyn College. She was also active with the Brooklyn Museum of Art Community Committee. As a life-long educator, she was concerned that many people lacked knowledge about and interest in current affairs and worried about national government policies, especially those affecting civil liberties.

Her family was the most important part of her life and she will be missed by her daughters, Jane and Miriam (Mimi), and son-in-law, Alfred Dougherty. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Benjamin Bender, with whom she enjoyed theatre and international travel. She continued those pursuits after his death and recently traveled with her family to British Columbia.

Mrs. Bender was proud of her daughters’ work to improve the lives of women through Jane’s career as a social worker and Mimi’s leadership of Women’s Health Virginia.

Bruce L. Browne

Bruce Lord Browne, of Crozet, Va. Our beloved father and friend, died Wednesday November 26, 2003 on his 66Th birthday, following complications from a stroke.

He was born in New Haven, Conn. to the late Alice Lord and Henry Alexander Browne of Charlottesville. After graduating from Tilton Academy in N.H., he attended the Univ. of Va. while managing SKMotors on 29N. In the early 60’s, Bruce purchased Chief Justice John Marshalls farm house on 250W where he owned and operated The Kings Inn Restaurant. In the 70’s he developed Hickory Ridge a planned equestrian community in Earlysville with his brother Architect Henry J. Browne. In 1981, he started a chain of restaurants known as Thatchers, an American Style Pub, popular with locals Uva students and faculty. In the 90’s he retired to Vero Beach, Fla. but returned last October ’02 to his beloved Charlottesville.

He is survived by his daughter, Katharine "Cricket" Browne of Chapel Hill, NC.; his son, Andrews Lord Browne of Richmond, Va. and his brother Henry J. Browne of Gordonsville. Also surviving Bruce are three nieces, Tracy Browne, Leslie Browne Stone and Kari Browne and cousins The Dorrier family of Scottsville.

A man who lived life to the fullest and whose motto became "Are we having fun yet?" will be missed by everyone who knew him. A celebration of his life will be planned for the Spring.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Charlottesville SPCA, Woodburn Rd, Charlottesville 22901 or a favorite charity.

Edna Clements

A funeral service for Edna Clarke Clements will be held at 2:00 p.m. today, at Broadus Memorial Baptist Church with Dr. Tom Leland, Rev. Robert K. Wheeler and Rev. Eric Howell officiating. Interment icon will follow at Monticello Memory Gardens.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Broadus Memorial Baptist Church, 1535 Stony Point Road, Charlottesville, Va. 22911.

Hill & Wood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
