Irven Goodson, Jr.

Irven Lee "Chuck" Goodson, Jr., 74, husband of Yvonne (Sparks) Goodson, of 350 Gravelly Hill Lane, Middlebrook, died at 4 p.m., Thursday, November 27, 2003, in the Augusta Medical Center, Fishersville, following a lengthy illness.

He was born on June 9, 1929, in Washington D.C., a son of the late Irven Lee, Sr., and Sadie Kathleen (Allison) Goodson.

Mr. Goodson served with the U.S. Army as a U.S. Army Band percussionist. He retired as a professional musician.

He was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church where he was an Elder and choir member.

For over 30 years he was a member of the Stonewall Brigade Band and performed locally for many years with a variety of Jazz Ensembles and the Staunton Choral Society. He taught drum and mentored many local musicians. He also played at Lyndon Johnson’s Inaugural Ball and was a musician in the D. C. area for many years.

In addition to his wife, family includes four sons and two daughters-in-law, Dale Goodson and Gary Goodson, both of Middlebrook, Danny and Diane Goodson of Middlebrook and Doug and Shannon Goodson of Staunton; two daughters, Sandra Goodson of Charlottesville and Janice Goodson of Middlebrook; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Carol Goodson of McKinley; seven grandchildren, Rosie Turner, Drayton Turner, Sophie Adams, Emma Bosserman, April Cross, Sam Goodson, and Alex Goodson; and five great grandchildren, Megan Bosserman, Hanna Simmons, Taylor Brackman, Brett Cross, and Blake Cross.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, December 1, 2003, in the Bethel Presbyterian Church by the Revs. Sally Robinson and Clifford D. Caldwell. Burial will follow in the Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at his residence.

Hazel B. Harris

A funeral service for Hazel Bailey Harris, will be conducted at 11:00 am Monday, December 1, 2003, in the Chapel of the Hill & Wood Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Monticello Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends this evening, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family expresses a special thanks to Dr. William Hammond and the nurses and staff of Martha Jefferson Hospital for all their care and concern during Nanaw’s stay at the hospital.

Marie S. Leonhardt

Marie S. Leonhardt, of 35 Forest Drive, Palmyra died Friday, November 28, 2003 at her home.

She was born May 31, 1931 in Brooklyn, New York, daughter of the late Angelo and Josephine S. Lizzi.

She was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

She is survived by her husband, Charles Leonhardt of Palmyra; two daughters, Susan Leonhardt of Denver, CO; and Lenore Leonhardt Wright and husband, David of Richmond, VA.; two step-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Maitlan Wright.

There will be a wake at 10:00 a.m. Monday December 1, 2003 at the Saints Peter and Paul Catholic church. A funeral mass will follow at 11:00 a.m. conducted by Father Jerry Przywara.

Sheridan Funeral Home of Kents Store is in charge of arrangements.

Heinz Pors

Heinz Pors, 79, of Charlottesville, died Thursday, November 27, 2003, in a local hospital.

Born June 16, 1924 in Hamburg, Germany, he was the son of the late Ernst and Minna Meyer Pors. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Rudolf Pors.

Heinz was an engineer with Comdial for many years. Later he, along with his wife, founded Heinz Musitronics which they operated for many years. In addition, he worked for the University of Virginia as a radiology technician and also performed private x-ray inspections throughout the Virginia area.

He is survived by his wife, Ingrid B. A. Pors; one daughter, Christiane Pors-Sadoff and her husband Ronald and their children, Hayley and Rachel; two sons, Norman Pors and Olaf Pors and his wife, Joyce and their children, Nathan, Valerie and Abel; one sister, Anneliese Schmidt; one sister-in-law, Margarete Pors; and nieces, Helga, Susanne and Marianne.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, December 1, 2003, at the Teague Funeral Home.

The family would like to thank the 5th floor nursing staff at Martha Jefferson Hospital for their care and compassion.

James E. Shiflett

James Emmett Shiflett, 83, passed away at his home in Madison County Friday, November 28, 2003, after a brief illness. He was born December 27, 1919 in Greene County. A son of the late Frank and Mattie Morris Shiflett.

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen G. Shiflett; two sisters, Annie Lawson and husband, Ellis; Burnice Lawson and husband, Burnie of Greene County; four daughters, Beverly Heroy and husband, Herbert of Stanardsville, Nellie Ramirez and Fidel of Cleveland, OH, Mary Smith and Charles of Clifton, Jan Shiflett Brame and husband Ted of Brightwood; three sons, Steve Shiflett and wife, Cathy of Warrenton, Allen Shiflett of Apopka, Fl., Sam Shiflett and Michelle of Apopka, Fl.; a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mr. Shiflett owned and managed Colonial Tree Service in Arlington for over 30 years, pastored Temple of God Church in Fairfax for over 7 years, evangelized and preached the gospel for over 50 years in the Washington Metropolitan area, and attended Wolftown Pentecostal Church.

The family will celebrate his life 11:00 a.m., Monday, December 1, 2003, at Ryan Funeral Chapel in Quinque, with interment in the Holly Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Nellie Ramirez officiating.

The family suggest memorial contributions be given to Hospice of the Rapidan, P.O. Box 1715, Culpeper, Va. 22701 or Wolftown Pentecostal Church, 547 Graves Mill Road, Madison, Va. 22727.

Many thanks to the love and care his wife, daugheters have given him during these last days.

Katherine Paige West

Katherine Paige West, 37, of Fredericksburg, died Friday, November 28, 2003 at Mary Washington Hospital.

She attended the Fredericksburg Baptist Church where she was a charter member of the Special Friends Sunday School Class.

She is survived by her parents, Kenneth and Vivian H. West; a brother, David Alan West of Spotsylvania; Maternal grandfather, James D. Hutcherson of Charlottesville; two nieces Sara Lyn West of Spotsylvania and Amanda Paige West of Stafford.

Friends may call at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, Fredericksburg on Sunday, November 30, 2003 from 1:00 to 4:30om. A funeral Service will be held in the funeral home chapel on Monday December 1, 2003 at 11:00am with the Rev. J.Larry Haun officiating. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, December 2, 2003 at 12:00 noon in Monticello Memory Gardens, Charlottesville.

Reese McKinley Brown Jr.

Reese McKinley Brown Jr., 79, of Charlottesville, Va., departed this life on Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003, at Martha Jefferson Hospital. He was born in Albemarle County on Sept. 8, 1924, to the late Reese McKinley Brown Sr. and Emily Jane Carter Brown.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Charles Alfred Brown, and a sister-in-law, Delores E. Brown. Reese was inquisitive and possessed a penchant for learning. He was fun loving and especially enjoyed being in the company of family and friends.

He leaves to cherish his memory two brothers, William V. Brown of Charlottesville and Robert Franklin Brown and his wife Minnie of Beltsville, Md.; four nephews, Darrin Brown and Antonio (Tony) Brown, of Beltsville, Md., and James E. Crenshaw III, and Daniel A. Crenshaw of Nelson County; three nieces, Sharon Jacqueline Crenshaw of Nelson County, Angelia Brown of Beltsville, Md., and Deborah Charlene Crenshaw and her husband James of Charlottesville, Va.; two great-nephews, Dante' Crenshaw of Nelson County and Robert Williams of Beltsville, Md.; three great-nieces, Antonia A. Anderson, Davida Stewart, and Derida Stewart, all of Nelson County; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003, at the J.F. Bell Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Doyle Thomas officiating. Interment icon will follow at Hickory Hill Baptist Church cemetery, Hickory Hill, Va.

Luetta G. Dean

Luetta Germaine Dean, 79, of Charlottesville, died Friday, Nov. 21, 2003, at her residence.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. today at Lebanon Presbyterian Church in Greenwood.

J. Carr Dorman

Julian Carr Dorman, 74, died Friday, Nov. 21, 2003, at a local hospital.

Born in 1929, he was a 1947 graduate of Woodberry Forest School and attended the University of Virginia, where he was on the wrestling team, a member of Eli Banana, and vice-president of his fraternity. Following graduation in 1952, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps until 1954, being discharged as a captain before entering the University of Virginia Law School, from which he graduated in 1957.

His career was spent in personal trust administration and estate settlement, primarily with the Peoples Bank of Charlottesville, where he was a vice-president and trust officer, and with Albemarle Bank and Trust Co. He retired in 1985 as trust officer and president of Albemarle Bank and Trust.

He was past president of the Charlottesville-Albemarle Estate Planning Council, chairman of the Albemarle County Draft Board during the Vietnam conflict, president of the Charlottesville-Albemarle Weekday Religious Education Board, and is an elder and trustee of Cove Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret; two sons, Jesse and Mitch; four daughters, Laura, Molly, Julia and Rebecca; and six grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. at Cove Presbyterian Church, Covesville, Va., today with the Rev. Marcy Orr officiating. Interment icon will be private.

Martha Neal Dugan

Martha Dugan, a resident of the Colonnades in Charlottesville, Va., died at home on Nov. 6, 2003.

She is survived by her daughter, Katherine (Kitty) Clark Stroud and her husband, Robert E. Stroud, of Charlottesville, Va.; a grandson, Robert G. Stroud and his wife, Jennifer A. Stroud, of Boulder, Colo.; a granddaughter, Margaret L. Stroud and her husband, William S. Grimes; and a great-grandson, Andrew H. Grimes, all of Raleigh, N.C.; a brother, James M. Deaton Jr. of Statesville, N.C.; a niece who was particularly close to her, Mary A. Deaton of Statesville, N.C.; and other nieces and nephews as well as great-nieces and great-nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, on Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Jim Baker officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Arthur B. Dugan/Martha N. Dugan Scholarship, University of the South, 735 University Ave., Sewanee, Tenn., 37383-1000; or the Youth Orchestra of Charlottesville-Albemarle, P.O. Box 4845, Charlottesville, Va. 22905; or to a charity of your choice.

Lucille Lang Kelly

Lucille Hazel Lang Kelly, 97, of Crozet, died Friday, Nov. 21, 2003, at Gibson Adult Care Home in Crozet, Va.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today at Crozet Baptist Church with Dr. Roy S. Thomas III officiating. Interment icon will follow at Riverview cemetery in Charlottesville, Va. Visitation will be held at the church at 10 a.m. prior to the service. Anderson Funeral Service of Crozet is in charge of arrangements.

Ollie S. Morris

Ollie Saunders Morris, 98, of Charlottesville, died November 22, 2003, in a local nursing facility. Born September 2, 1905, in Albemarle County, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Blanche Payne Saunders and was the wife of the late John H. Morris. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Mildred Byerly, and eleven brothers and sisters.

Mrs. Morris was a member of the First Baptist Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Charlotte Beasley; three sons, Harry H. Morris, Bobbie R. Morris, and H. Wayne Morris; fifteen grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; and seven great- great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Holly Memorial Gardens with Reverend Gary Robins officiating.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Hospice of the Piedmont, 1490 Pantops Mountain Place, Suite 200, Charlottesville, VA 22911.

Mandy Lee Adams

Mandy Lee Adams, 79, of Crozet, entered eternal rest Tuesday, November 18, 2003, at the University of Virginia Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late Frank and Caroline Barbour, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband William Adams.

She leaves to cherish her memory, three beloved grandchildren, Patricia Agee of Louisa, GiGi Wilson of Stafford, Va., and Jackie Mullins of Norfolk, Va.; nine beloved great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other beloved relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003, at noon at Piedmont Baptist Church interment will follow at church cemetery. Services of comfort are entrusted to McClenny Funeral Service Inc. R. B. and Doris A. McClenny morticians.

Reese McKinley Brown Jr.
