James H. Williams
James Howard Williams died at his home, Friday, November 21, 2003. Son of the late William Durrette and Clara Snow Williams, he was born July 4, 1923, in Greene County, Va. He was preceded in death by his previous wife, Maude Smith Williams. He was also preceded in death by his brothers Ferrell T. Amon P. Jr. Russell, and Mason C. Williams and his sisters, Vandelia Williams Herring and Susan Earl Williams.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 20 years, Nancy Gibson Harmon Williams and her children, David E. Harmon Jr.; and his son, Eric Harmon of Charlottesville and Robin Harmon Covington and her husband Richard Jr., and their children, Rebecca Louise and Richard III of Keswick, who will fondly remember their "Grandpa Jim" and sharing of his milk and cookies. Jim is also survived by his children, James Howard Buster Williams Jr., and his wife Janet; his daughters Linda Williams Mams and her husband Carl, and Sandra Williams Valdmets and her husband Michael. He is also survived by his brothers Elbert O. and his wife Catherine, Luby D. and his wife Eunice, Denzal L. and his wife Lucille, his sisters Agnes Williams Wingfield and her husband Buck and Beatrice Williams Parks. His survivors also include his grandchildren Ashley Mams, Tony, Cody and Miranda Williams; and one great grandchild, and a host of nieces and nephews
Mr. Williams was a proud WWII veteran having served as a Coxswains Mate aboard the gun boat U.S.S. Greene. He transported soldiers from England across the channel to France on D-Day and then marched ashore after the last run. He also served in the Pacific Theatre until the war ended.
He was the retired owner of Albemarle Realty and Building Company. He served many years as a Real Estate Broker and as a Builder and Developer in the surrounding areas. He was a past President of the Blue Ridge Home Builders Association. Mr. Williams was a member of the Pine Ridge Church of the Brethren and a prior member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 23, 2003, at Holly Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Teague Funeral Home.

Benjamin Bowles
Benjamin Bowles, 71, of Fluvanna, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 2003, at the University of Virginia Hospital.
He was the son of the late Curtis Bowles and Beatrice Jones Bowles. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Jimmy Bowles, and a sister, Mary Bowles, and his first wife, Dorothy Mae Glover.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Sue Bowles of Fluvanna; eight sons, Benjamin Bowles Jr. of Fluvanna, Melvin Bowles and his wife, Tawanda, of Charlottesville, Cornelius Bowles of Fluvanna, Terry Bowles and his wife, Nicole, of Fluvanna, Tyrone Bowles and his wife, Robin, of Scottsville, Luther Bowles of Charlottesville, Dirk Bowles of Fluvanna and John Bowles of Charlottesville; six daughters, Barbara Johnson of Charlottesville, Debra Lewis of Lynchburg, Carolyn Scott and her husband, the Rev. Pastor John Scott, of Charlottesville, Ruth Bates of Charlottesville, Alice Douglas and her husband, Barry, of Fluvanna, Brenda Bowles of Fluvanna; three brothers, Leroy Bowles of New York, Norman Bowles of Buckingham, Curtis Bowles Jr. of New York; two sisters, Florence Harris of Richmond, Deala Bowles of New York; 29 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

BRADFORD I. GIBSON
Bradford Irving Gibson was called home suddenly on Sunday, November 16, 2003.
He was born in Charlottesville, VA on December 3, 1980. "Brad" attended Albemarle County public schools and received his diploma from Monticello High School. Though his stay on earth was brief, his life was rich in the things that truly matter. He was strong, honest, and unafraid of hard work.
Bradley was a devoted and loyal son who also took great care and joy in being a brother, a nephew, a cousin, and a best friend.
Mourning his loss are his mother, Teresa L. Gibson; his father and stepmother, Bradford and Evelyn White; a brother, Corey Prentiss; a sister, Samantha Prentiss; one great-aunt, Blanche Standup; two aunts Charlotte J. Gibson (most devoted) and Hazel Charles (Walter); God- parents Jim and Sula Ballas, and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends, especially Frank and Joann Dorman.
He had a special ability to make others smile and laugh. Brad was loved by many and will be sorely missed.
The family will receive friends at Hill and Wood Funeral Home today from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. A graveside service will follow at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church cemetery, Ivy, VA.

Hunter L. Graves
Hunter L. Graves died at home Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2003.
Son of the late Gordon G. and Lucy Poe Graves, he was born on Dec. 10, 1923, in North Garden, Va.
He graduated valedictorian of the Red Hill High School class of 1941 and was drafted for duty during World War II. After basic training he was sent to the University of Denver under the Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP), where he studied engineering during 1943 into 1944.
He was a combat veteran of WWII, seeing action late in 44-45 with the Rainbow (42nd) Infantry Division’s 222nd Regimental Anti-Tank Company. He was transferred to the 42nd Division’s Information and Education Office after V.E. Day.
As a career intelligence officer, he graduated from the University of Virginia, the Army War College and the Federal Executive Institute. He was a former member of the Association of Intelligence Officers, the National Military Intelligence Association and chaired the Interagency Joint Staff Groups. He retired as chief operations manager of the Defense Intelligence Agency Directorate for Management and Plans. At retirement he was awarded the D.I.A. Director’s Medal for Meritorious Civilian Service.
He is survived by his wife, Lillian Coleman Graves; one daughter, Virginia Graves Melicher and husband Steve; son Hunter Lee Graves Jr. and wife Allison; and son Gordon R. Graves; two grandsons, Michael and William Melicher. He is also survived by one sister, Helen Graves Leathers and husband Harry. Mr. Graves was brother of sister Lucille Graves Mawyer and husband, Leroy.
A graveside service will be held today, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Olivet cemetery.

Nellie Luck Gross
Nellie Luck Gross, 84, departed this life on Saturday, November 15, 2003, at the Cedars.
She was born July 15, 1918 the daughter of the late Charley Luck and Queenie Luck.
She was preceded in death by four siblings, a sister, Ethel Luck; and three brothers, George Luck, Thomas Luck, and Charley Luck.
She leaves to cherish her memories one sister, Mrs. Julia Copeland of Washington, D.C.; one brother-in-law, Ezekiah Copeland of Washington, DC; she also leaves to cherish her memories a loving and devoted lifetime friend, Mr. Raymond Bruce of Charlottesville, Va.; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 22, 2003, at the J. F. Bell Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. R. A. Hailes officiating. Interment
will follow in Mt. Olivet Baptist Church cemetery, White Hall, Va.

Joseph F. Johnston
Joseph F. Johnston, 97, a resident of Albemarle County, died on November 17, 2003.
Mr. Johnston was born in Birmingham, Alabama, the son of Forney Johnston, a Birmingham lawyer, and Clara Cocke Johnston of Bremo, Fluvanna County, Virginia.
Mr. Johnston was educated at Episcopal High School, Priceton University (Class of 1927) and the Harvard Law School (Class of 1930). He married
Elizabeth Whipple White, of Oak Park, Ill. The couple moved to Birmingham, where Mr. Johnston was associated with his father’s law firm, Cabaniss & Johnston. In the late 1930’s, Mr. Johnston was General Solicitor of the Seaboard Railroad in Norfolk. During World War II he entered the army and was stationed at the Pentagon in Washington, where he served in the legal branch of the army. He attained the rank of lieutenant colonel and was awarded the Legion of Merit. He returned to Cabaniss & Johnston for the remainder of his career. In 1950 he was elected to the Council of the American Law Institute. He served as head of a commission to draft a new Judicial Article to the Alabama Constitution and subsequently served as Chairman of the Standing Committee on the Alabama Rules of Judicial Administration. Mr. and Mrs. Johnston moved to Albemarle County in 1999. Mrs. Johnston died in 2001. Mr. Johnston is survived by his sister, Virginia Johnston Walmsley of New Orleans, La.; his son, Joseph F. Johnston, Jr., of Alexandria, Va., and his grandson, Samuel B. Johnston, of San Francisco, Calif.
The funeral service will be private.
Virginia G. Miller
Virginia Gaynell Miller, 76, of Orange County, died at her residence, Wednesday, November 19, 2003.
Born in Madison County, she had retired from Orange County Nursing Home and was a member of Faith Bible Baptist Church in Unionville. She was the daughter of the late Russell and Grace Mae Sharp Shipley.
Survivors include, four sons, Charles Miller Jr. and his wife, patricia of Gordonsville, Gary Miller and his wife, Sandy, of Orange, George Miller and his wife, Connie of Louisa, and John Miller of Mass.; seven daughters, Lois Dillion and her friend, Larry Smith of Orange, Brenda Halsey of Culpeper, Yvonne Wright and her husband, Benny of Unionville, Robin Donald and her husband, Dwight of St. Marys, Cal., Betty Jean Scott and her husband, James of Orange, Viola Weaver and her husband Billy of Orange and Nancy Pritchett and her husband, Ray of Gordonsville; a sister, Ruth Brown of Wolftown; 23 grandchildren; and six great grandsons.
Mrs. Miller was preceded in death by her former husband, Charles Miller Sr., and a brother, Burlyn Shipley.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 23, 2003, at Preddy Funeral Home, Orange, with the Rev. Grayson Delano officiating. Burial will follow in Graham cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, November 22, 2003, at the funeral home.

Dayton M. Peterson
Dayton M. Peterson, 84, died on Nov. 15, 2003. He was born in Dover, Minn., on Oct. 19, 1919. He was preceded in death by his parents and older brother. He graduated from high school in St. Paul, Minn., in 1937, and attended the University of Minnesota.
He accepted a civil service position in Washington, D.C., in February 1941. While there he attended George Washington University night school. His accounting work for the Farm Credit Administration was transferred to Kansas City, Mo., in April 1942. He was inducted into the Army on June 6, 1942, at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. He was accepted as an officer candidate student at Grinell College. He was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in March 1943 and assigned to Post Headquarters Camp Crowder, Mo., as a special service officer. He attended courses at Washington and Lee University in 1943 and he was honorably discharged as a captain in March 1946.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Bernice Lord Peterson, whom he met while they both worked for the government in Washington, D.C. They married
in her home in North Vassalboro, Maine, on Aug. 26, 1943. He is also survived by a son, John Dayton Peterson, his wife, Karen, and their three daughters, Kristen, Laura and Margaret, of Annapolis, Md.; a son, Brian Clark Peterson, his wife, Hilary, and their son, Derek, of Hurricane W.Va.; his daughter, Gail and husband David Turpin from Hillsville, Va., and their daughter, Jennifer, and her husband, Christopher Holderfield, and their first great-grandchild, Seth Holderfield, born Jan. 25, 2002. He is also survived by a brother-in-law, John W. Lord of North Vassalboro, ME.
Dayton was a member of First United Methodist Church, Charlottesville, for over 20 years. He was a volunteer at the gift shop at the University of Virginia Hospital. He was also active in SCORE for several years, and he and Bernice were involved with the International Student Program. Perhaps his biggest joy was ushering at UVa athletic events for over 20 years.
Upon discharge from the U.S. Army in 1946, he was employed by Butler Brothers (later to become Ben Franklin Stores Inc.) in their accounting department. In 1951 he was promoted to regional controller at the Baltimore, Md., office. In 1956, he was transferred to a new distribution center in Stow, Ohio, as regional controller and credit manager. In 1970 he was transferred back to Baltimore on a special assignment. In February 1972, he resigned to purchase the Ben Franklin Store on West Main Street, Charlottesville. That store was sold in 1980 but they owned another Ben Franklin Store in Hillsville, Va., from 1977 until it closed in 1990.
Visitation will be on Saturday, Nov. 22, at First United Methodist Church, 101 E. Jefferson St., Charlottesville, from 1 to 2 p.m. A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. in the Church Chapel. Elmer E. Poindexter
Elmer E. Poindexter, 84 of Montpelier, formerly of Carysbrook, died Tuesday, November 18, 2003, in Richmond.
Born January 25, 1919, in Louisa County. He was the son of the late John and Kate Thompson Poindexter.
He was also preceded in death by his brother, John Thomas Poindexter and sister-in-law, Katherine Baker Poindexter.
He is survived by his cousins and friends.
A funeral service, with Masonic Rites will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 22, 2003, at the Hill Crest cemetery in Louisa, Va. The Rev. Frank Schumaker will officiate. Arrangement by Colbert Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Eula Piercy Sadler
Eula Piercy Sadler, 85, of New Canton, formerly of Richmond, died Sunday, November 16, 2003.
Survivors include one son, Craig Sadler and his wife, Sandra of New Canton; two sisters, Grace Lee Lipscomb of Richmond and Ernie Yancey of New Canton; two grandchildren, Kenneth Sadler and Tracey Johnson; four great grandchildren Brittani and Joshua Sadler, Devin and Dean Johnson.
A funeral service will be held today, at 11 a.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, New Canton, with the Reverend Royce E. Jones, Jr. officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.

Dorothy D. Sherwood
Dorothy D. Sherwood of 3863 Valentine Mill Road, Gordonsville, Virginia, entered into her eternal rest with Jesus November 18, 2003, at the age of 83.
She is survived by a brother, Otto Lee Sherwood Jr., at 414 E. Baker Street, (P.O. Box 1578), Gordonsville, Virginia.
She was the daughter of the late Otto L. Sherwood and Grace Johnson Sherwood. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Margaret S. Lillard and Mrs. Mary Lee Davis.
Dorothy ws a lifelong resident of the home place where she was born. She was a member of the Louisa United Methodist Church, as well as an active member of the Evelyn hankla Ladies Circle.
Dot is also survived by six nieces and nephews and many cousins, whom she loved dearly.
Her ability to look on the bright side of all her difficulties was an inspiration to her family, friends and neighbors.
Funeral Services will be held today, at 2 p.m. at Woodward Funeral Home Chapel with interment at Hillcrest cemetery.
Faye L. Shifflett
Faye Lorraine Shifflett, 55, of Charlottesville, died Tuesday, November 18, 2003, in a local hospital.
Born July 16, 1948, she was the daughter of the late William S. and Mary Davis Shifflett.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her sisters, Lucille Shifflett and Madeline Jones and her brothers, Claude Shifflett and Eddie Shifflett.
She is survived by her loving life partner, Randolph "Sonny" Norford; and her loving family, daughters, Sheila and April, step-daughter, Lisa, step-sons, Kevin, Michael and Brian; sisters, Peggy Shifflett; Sharon Garrison; Mary Jane Shifflett, and Frances Gravette and brother, Fred Shifflett; four grandchildren and she also leaves to cherish her memory many nieces, nephews, friends and other family members.
A funeral service will be conducted today at 2 p.m. at Teague Chapel with Reverend Tom Williams.

Gracie Lee Shifflett
Gracie Lee Shifflett, 73, of Standardsville, went to be with the Lord on November 20, 2003.
She was surrounded by her many loved ones. Since her illness, she resided at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Ada Shifflett.
Gracie was born on October 13, 1930, in Albemarle County, the daughter of Floyd and Vergie Estes. She is preceeded in death by her loving husband, Orby, as well as two brothers and two sisters.
Gracie is survived by five dedicated children and their spouses: Roger and Ada Shifflett, Herbert and Gloria Shifflett, and Archie and Barbara Shifflett, all of Standardsville; Phyllis and Jim Anderson of South Dakota; and Davis Junior and Gina Shifflett of Culpeper. She also leaves behind numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many devoted friends. Special thanks to the Hospice of the Rapidan for their care and devotion.
Family night will be tonight at Preddy’s Funeral Home in Madison County from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral service will also be held at Preddy’s Funeral Home on Saturday, November 22, 2003, at 1 p.m. Interment
will be at Holly Memorial Gardens in Charlottesville. Pastor Edwin Buzzy Deane will officiate. The family will also receive friends after the funeral services at the home of Roger and Ada Shifflett.
