Viola T. S. Taylor

Mrs. Viola Turner Stewart Taylor, 87, 1251 Blundell Hollow Road, Afton, died Tuesday, November 18, 2003, at the residence.

She was born June 27, 1916, in Wintergreen, Va. The daughter of Howard and Sally Turner. She was a member of the Elk Hill Baptist Church, Wintergreen. She is the last member of her immediate family.

Surviving relatives include two sons, James Stewart and John Stewart both of Nellysford, Va.; five daughters, Mrs. Mamie Turner and husband, Eddie, Ms. Mary Ann Stewart, both of Charlottesville, Mrs. Martha Winston and husband, Jordan, of Afton, Mrs. Edna McLamore of Elpaso, Texas, Mrs. Jerline Gray and husband, Samuel of Arrington, Va.; 30 grandchildren, 46 great grandchildren; nine great great grandchildren; many other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; a foster son, F.P. Phillips, A special friend, and care giver, Mrs. Debbie Mawyer and a close friend of the family, Darryl Thomas.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 22, 2003, in the Elk Hill Baptist Church by Rev. horace Spears, assisted by Rev. Clifton McDonald, Rev. Henry Banks and Pastor Leslie Givens. Interment icon in the Elk Hill cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. tonight at the Lewis Funeral Home, Waynesboro, and other times at the residence.

Virginia Embrey Wood

Virginia Embrey Wood, 87 of Lovingston died, Tuesday November 18, 2003, in the Hanover Healthcare Center in Mechanicsville.

Born May 18, 1916, at Schuyler (Nelson Co.) a daughter of the late Charles Embrey and Harvey Brawner Embrey.

She was preceded in death by her husband William McKenny Wood, Sr. on August 20, 1985. Also preceded in death by a sister Catherine Howard and a brother Austin Embery.

She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Lovingston and retired from the Central Virginia Electric Co-op as head bookkeeper with 37 years of service.

She is survived by her daughters, Betty W. Davis of Mechanicsville, Patsy W. Perrin of Ashland and Dawn W. Tyree of Sandston; a son, William McKenny Wood, Jr. of Summerville, S.C.; nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held today at 11 a.m. at the graveside in Mountain View cemetery in Lovingston with the Rev. John P. Campbell officiating.

Following the service the family will receive friends in the social hall of Calvary Baptist Church for a fellowship dinner.

The family suggest that memorials take the form of contributions to Calvary Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 264, Lovingston, Va 22949.

Ethel Shifflett Conley

Ethel Shifflett Conley, 85, of Somerset went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004.

Born July 28, 1918 in Rockingham County, she was a daughter of the late Joshua and Bertha Shifflett. She was the wife of the late Jesse Willard Conley. Mrs. Conley was a member of Mount Lebanon Church of the Brethren.

She is survived by two daughters, Lillian Branham and her husband, Warren "Puggy", of Gordonsville and Mary Butler and her husband, Earl, of Somerset; one son, Wilbert "Will" Conley and his wife, Susie, of Rhoadesville; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Polly Conley and Dorothy Lawson.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at Preddy Funeral Home chapel in Orange with interment to follow in Maplewood cemetery in Gordonsville. Pastor Carmon Hartsfield will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

William Luther Fagan

William Luther Fagan, 88, of Gordonsville died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004 at Inova Commonwealth Care Center in Fairfax.

Born on March 29, 1915, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late George W. Fagan and Beulah Amonette Fagan.

Mr. Fagan was a custodian supervisor for the Federal Government in Washington, D.C. and an army veteran of World War II. He was an active member of the Barboursville Masonic Lodge.

Mr. Fagan is survived by a daughter, Irene Velma Kirby of Alexandria; three sons, William Luther Fagan Jr. and wife, Betty, of Manassas, Robert Edward Fagan and wife, Diane, of Camel Town, Pa. and Charles Alton Fagan and wife, Faye, of Herndon; his former wife, Irene Virginia Fagan of Fairfax; one sister, Frances Ellis of Frederick, Md.; and a number of grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at Preddy Funeral Home in Orange with interment in the Culpeper National cemetery with masonic rites and military honors.

The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.

Malcolm T. Gentry

Malcolm Thomas Gentry, 80, of Fork Union died Jan. 31, 2004 at his home.

He was born July 6, 1923, son of the late Bob and Minnie Gentry. "Mac" was retired from Virginia Power after 35 years service. He was a member and a deacon of Fork Union Baptist Church and also a member of the Fluvanna Ruritan Club.

He was also preceded in death by a son, Wayne Gentry and six brothers and sisters.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 59 years, Louise Gentry of Fork Union; one son, Ronald Gentry and wife, Lucille, of Charlottesville; one daughter, Cynthia Norris and husband, William, of Charlottesville; one daughter-in-law, Martha Gentry of Parksley; and six grandchildren, Kevin and wife, Ashleigh, Jenna Norris, Erika Gentry, Natalie Gentry, Hannah Gentry and Zachary Malcolm Gentry.

"Mac" was a loving husband, father and grandfather, an avid gardener and well loved by his neighbors and community.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. tonight at the Fork Union Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, at the Fork Union Baptist Church. Interment icon will follow in the Fork Union Memorial cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont or the Fork Union Baptist Church Building Fund.

Minor Wayne Hill

Minor Wayne Hill, 50, of River Road, Faber died Saturday morning, Jan. 31, 2004 at the Avante at Waynesboro.

Born April 9, 1953 in Charlottesville, Minor was a son of the late Edward McCallum Hill and Virginia Harris Hill. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, James Edward Hill. He was a member of Adial Baptist Church.

He is survived by his loving and devoted sisters, Emma J. Cash and husband, Michael, and Judy A. Higgins and husband, Rodney, all of Waynesboro; a nephew, Michael W. Cash II; two nieces, Jennifer H. Cash and Katelyn N. Higgins all of Waynesboro; and several cousins.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today at Adial Baptist Church with Rev. Evan Johnson officiating with interment to follow in the church cemetery.

The family suggest memorials take the form of contribution to Adial Baptist Church Building Fund, 1090 Adial Road, Faber, VA 22938.

Alice H. Johnson

Alice Hopkins Johnson, 82, of Orange died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004 in the Orange County Nursing Home.

Born on Aug. 28, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Elijah and Julia Williams Hopkins.

She is survived by her husband, Dea. Thaddeus H. Johnson of Orange; four sons, Andrew Johnson of Bronx, N.Y., James Johnson of Orange, Thaddeus Johnson of Hampton, and Daniel Johnson of Queens, N.Y.; one stepson, Charles Johnson of Orange; one daughter, Carolyn J. Johnson of Manassas; two brothers, Isaiah Hopkins of Kenbridge and Elijah Hopkins of Morristown, N.J.; and 19 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted at 12 noon Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at Little Zion Baptist Church in Orange with Pastor Marion F. Wilkerson officiating. Interment icon will follow at Westview cemetery in Orange.

The family will receive friends before the services from 10:30 am to 12 noon Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at Little Zion Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the local Alzheimer’s Association.

Robert Louis Johnson

Robert Louis Johnson, 66, of Lowesville Road, Amherst died Saturday Jan. 31, 2004, at Lynchburg General Hospital.

Robert was born September 18, 1937 in Lynchburg, a son of the late Andrew Louis Johnson and Lucy Harvey Johnson. He was a member of Fleetwood Harmony Lodge No.92 AF&AM of Shipman, former President of the VAHA, former West District representative on the Nelson County Board of Supervisors, Charter Member and former Captain of the Roseland Rescue Squad, a member of the Board of Managers of the Piney River Fire Dept., member and former Secretary of the Nelson County Chamber of Commerce, a member of Nelson United Methodist Church of Arrington and the founder and former owner of Johnson’s Senior Centers in Amherst, Lovingston and Roseland.

He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years Virginia L. Harris Johnson; one brother, Charles H. Johnson and wife, Virginia, of Amherst; a niece, Joyce Martin and husband, Todd, of Madison Heights; two great-nieces, Amber and Kayla Martin both of Madison Heights; and several cousins.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, at Nelson United Methodist Church with Rev. James W. Hassmer and Dr. Rev. Michael Fitzgerald officiating with interment in Amherst cemetery.

Masonic Rites will be accorded today at 7:00 p.m. by Fleetwood Harmony Lodge at the funeral home after which time the family will receive friends until 8 p.m.

The family suggests that memorials take the form of contributions to the building fund of Nelson United Methodist Church, 5239 Thomas Nelson Highway, Arrington, VA 22922 or to a charity of ones choice.

Harriet Kirkpatrick

Harriet H. Kirkpatrick, 80, of Kents Store died Jan. 31, 2004, in the Orange County Nursing Home.

She was born Feb. 3, 1923 in Franklin, daughter of the late Britt and Daisy Holland. She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Gene McGhee and John Boone Kirkpatrick.

Harriet was a retired registered nurse and nursing instructor and a member of Byrd Chapel United Methodist Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Sharon Cersley of Kents Store and Jill McGhee of Warrenton; one stepson, John Roger Kirkpatrick of Charlottesville; six grandchildren, Timmy and wife, Tracy, of Scottsville, David and wife, Celine, of Austin, Texas, Ben and wife, Dana, of Kents Store, Jennifer and Michael of Warrenton, and Sean of Charlottesville; and four great-grandchildren.

Family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Byrd Chapel United Methodist Church, Kents Store.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, at the Byrd Chapel United Methodist Church, conducted by the Reverend Bobby Greene. Interment icon will follow in the Beulah Baptist Church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Scottsville Volunteer Fire Department.

Harry L. Marshall

Harry Lee Marshall, 72, of Charlottesville, passed away Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at Martha Jefferson Hospital following a brief illness.

Born on Oct. 18, 1931, in Charlottesville, he was the son of the late Joseph Andrew Marshall and Mamie Herring Marshall. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Willard Marshall, Gaines A. Marshall and George W. Marshall; and a nephew, Lewis Marshall.

Harry was a graduate of William Monroe High School. He served with the U.S. Navy and retired after 30 years of service as a detective with the Charlottesville Police Department, and was a partner of Marshall Hairstylists.

He was a charter member of the Thompson Hall Lodge No.5 FOP, where he was a past-president; a life member of the BPOE No.389 and served as a past trustee; he was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No.1028 since 1974, a member of the American Legion Post No.74; and a member of the Young Business Men’s Association; and a member of the Church of Our Saviour Episcopal Church.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Sally Franklin Marshall of Charlottesville; his son, Charles "Chuck" E. Marshall and his wife, Sandie, of Charlottesville; his daughter, Barbara "Barbi" M. Morris and her husband, Jim, of Palmyra; a brother, Walter L. Marshall and his wife, Marie, of Lexington; and four grandchildren, Tiffany Ann Marshall, Nicholas A. Morris, Danielle A. Morris and Scott D. Greenwood; a sister-in-law, Betty Franklin Phillips and her husband, Bill; his mother-in-law, Mae "Kitty" Dickerson of Charlottesville; among the number of nieces and nephews he loved, Becky T. Marshall of Greene County was very special; special friends, Warren and Ginny Stallings of Charlottesville; Mae and Don Quesenberry of Charlottesville, as well as many more close friends.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, at Church of Our Saviour Episcopal Church with the Rev. Harold H. Hallock Jr. officiating.

Honorary pallbearers will be James Haden, Bill Roudabush, Stuart Glass, Bill Davis, Julian Taliaferro, Mac Sloan, Otis Haggard, and Russell Marshall.

Burial will follow at Monticello Memory Gardens with Elk Rites.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. tonight at the Hill & Wood Funeral Home.

Willard C. Melton

Willard C. Melton, 72, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, at the chapel of Thomasson’s Funeral Service of Louisa with the Reverend Tyron McCowin officiating. Burial will be at the Easton Family cemetery in Louisa.
