Emma Jane Moss
Emma Jane Moss, 89, of Dillwyn, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004.
She was the widow of George R. Moss. She is survived by five daughters, Marjorie Sloan of Avon, Ill., Mary Duty of Richmond, Edna Davis and her husband, Harry of Scottsville, Ann McKay and her husband, Bernard of Richmond, and Frances Spain and her husband, Jerry of Rockville; one son, Franklin Moss and his wife, Judy, of Buckingham; 11 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
She was a devoted mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed by all of her family and friends.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, at Bethlehem Baptist church, Dillwyn, with interment in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 30, 2004, at Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn.

Helen Hamilton Poore
Helen Hamilton Poore, 64, passed away peacefully at her home, "Seven Springs, " in Louisa on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004.
Born on Oct. 13, 1939, in Schuyler, she was the daughter of the late Harry Alexander Hamilton and Lois Davidson Hamilton.
Helen is survived by her husband, Earl W. Poore of Louisa, as well as four children, Pete and his wife, Karen Taylor, of Earlysville, and their daughters, Kristi and Ali, Andy and his wife, Donna Taylor, of Louisa, and their daughter, Lexi, Earl G. and his wife, Paula Poore, of Louisa, and their daughter, Melissa, and Sharon Elizabeth Poore of Louisa.
Helen was the youngest of ten children. She is survived by eight of her siblings, Paul and his wife, Fran Hamilton, of Troy, Barbara and her husband, Ernie Rowland, of Chesterfield, Harry and his wife, Bea Hamilton, of Schuyler, Dick and his wife, Sylvie Hamilton, of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada, Eloise and her husband, John Jamison, of Titusville, Fla., Tommy and his wife, Christ Hamilton of Brandon, Ore., and Marjorie Blankenship of Alexandria.
She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Lauren Gray Poore, and her brother, Seymour Hamilton. She leaves to cherish her memory numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Helen served as the director of transit for the city of Charlottesville. She started as a secretary in the Charlottesville city manager’s office in 1973 and spent 30 years in dedicated public service to the people of Central Virginia. She was the first and only transit director in Charlottesville. In fact, she was one of the first, if not the first, female transit director in the United States. Her many professional accomplishments include service on the state Transportation Safety Board, the Board of Directors of JAUNT, The Board of Directors of the Virginia Transit Association, as well as serving on the board of the Metropolitan Planning Organization. She was recently named as one of the top 10 transit managers in North America by Metro magazine.
Helen loved family and friends. Her life centered around her children and grandchildren. She often hosted large Hamilton and Poore family reunions. She also enjoyed gardening and working in her greenhouse. She will be missed by many.
Her funeral will be held at 11 a.m. today, Jan. 30, 2004, in the chapel at Woodward Funeral Home in Louisa, with interment in the family cemetery at her home, "Seven Springs, " following the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Zion Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department.
Albert Ross Jr.
Albert Ross Jr., 59, of Palmyra, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, in Charlottesville.
Born March 31, 1944, in Fluvanna County, he was the son of the late Albert and Mary Sue Watson Ross.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Patterson Ross; four sons, Steve Patterson, Ronnie Patterson, Albert Ross and Alvin Ross; three daughters, Deborah Ware, Terry Shelton and Amy Ross; a brother, Walter Ross; four sisters, Mable Bradley, Gracie Washington, Alberta Scott and Shirley Palmer; two brothers-in-law, Jerry Palmer and William Bradley; two sons-in-laws, John Shelton and Sherman Ware; and 12 grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at the West Bottom Baptist Church, Bremo Bluff. The Rev Leroy Ross will officiate. Interment
will be in the church cemetery.

George H. Sutton
George Harry Sutton, 76, of Lake Monticello, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Jan. 26, 2004.
Born on March 4, 1927, in Chester, N.J., he was the son of Paul Sutton and Anna Becker Sutton. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Paul Sutton.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sharon; daughters, Cindy Sutton of Carolina Beach, N.C., Jennifer Lomu of Lake Monticello, Suzanne Undercofler and her husband, Don, of Creekside, Pa.; only son, George H. "Chip" Sutton Jr. and his wife, Rene, of Xenia, Ohio; stepdaughters, Salena Morphew and her husband, Joshua, Susan E. Newton of Malden, Mass., and Shonet Newton of Seattle, Wash.; his sister, Ruth Treloar and her husband, Charles, of Hackettstown, N.J.; nieces, nephews, 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
George was a 1950 graduate of Muhlenberg College with a B.S. in physics, a 1953 graduate of Columbia University with an M.A. in geology (geophysics), and a 1957 graduate of Columbia University with a Ph.D. in geology (seismology). His professional experience included being on the staff of Lamont Geological Observatory, Columbia University, chief seismologist in the Belgian Congo, assistant, then associate professor in the Department of Geology at Columbia, professor of geophysics, then division head, then associate director, then affiliate faculty of Hawaii Institute of Geophysics, University of Hawaii, visiting senior fellow, University of Colorado at Boulder, vice-president of Rondout Associates Inc., Stone Ridge, N.Y., visiting investigator at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Woods Hole, Mass.
He was a member of the Acoustical Society of America, American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Geophysical Union (including associate editor, Journal of Geophysical Research), Geological Society of America, Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, Omicron Delta Kappa, Seismological Society of America (serving as chairman, Eastern Section, associate editor, and on the Board of Directors), Sigma Xi, and the Society of Exploration Geophysicists.
George served in the Merchant Marine from 1945 to 1947, was a member of Christ Church Uniting, Kailua, Hawaii, and active in the Palmyra United Methodist choir. After moving to Lake Monticello, he was involved in Fluvanna Habitat for Humanity, Fluvanna County Community Singers, Fluvanna Flutterwheels, and at Lake Monticello: L.M. Line Dancers, L.M. Beautification Corps, Lake Preservation Committee, Storm Water Management Committee, and various volunteer activities.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, at Palmyra United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Michael Finn-McKenzie officiating. The family requests that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to Palmyra United Methodist Church, P.O. Elna W. Brown
Elna Wood Brown, 98, of Charlottesville, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, in a Florida nursing home.
Born on June 1, 1905, in Albemarle County, she was the daughter of the late William A. Wood and MaryBelle Dean Wood. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Reuben Erven Brown.
Mrs. Brown was a member of First Baptist Church in Charlottesville and worked for J.D. and J.S. Tilmans for 50-plus years, and then at the Linen Shop and The Mary Peg dress shop.
Surviving her are a daughter, Brenda Brown Griffin of Apopka, Fla.; a son, Richard Erven Brown of Gotha, Fla.; two brothers, Ashby Wood and George "Buck" Wood; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Oakey Brown of Gotha, Fla.; two granddaughters, Sherri Brown Radonski and her husband, Jeff, of Coral Springs, Fla., and Lori Brown Welch and her husband, Billy, of Apopka, Fla.; five great-grandchildren, Ryan Radonski, Amanda Radonski, Heather Radonski, Ricky Welch and Amy Welch; two step-grandsons, Chuck Griffin and his wife, Betty, of Waxahachie, Texas, and Brian Griffin and his wife, Tara, of Spring, Texas; and six step-great-grandchildren, Madison Griffin, Nolan Griffin, Emily Griffin, Gabe Griffin, Miles Griffin, and Ellis Griffin.
A memorial funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at First Baptist Church, Park Street, with Dr. Joel Jenkins officiating. Burial will be private.
The family will receive friends this evening from 7 to 8:30 at First Baptist Church.

Beauford Campbell
Beauford Hosbon Campbell Jr., 72, of Fork Union, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at his home.
He was born on July 16, 1931, in Belton, S.C., son of the late Beauford H. Campbell Sr. and Sarah Banister Campbell.
"Bill" was also preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
He was retired from Colonial Pipeline Co. and a member of Fork Union Baptist Church.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Louise S. Campbell of Fork Union; two sons, Donald T. Campbell of Fork Union and Philip M. Campbell of Roanoke; one daughter, Jane C. Pendergrass of Fork Union; one sister, Jo Ann Wright of Greensboro, N.C.; eight grandchildren, Beauford M. "Beau" Campbell, Donald T. "Kip" Campbell Jr., Corri L. Campbell, Katelyn C. Pendergrass, Kimberly M. Campbell, Renea M. Campbell, Joshua F. Campbell and Katherine E. Campbell; and one great-grandchild, Trenton M. Campbell.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at Fork Union Baptist Church, with interment to follow in Fork Union Memorial cemetery.

John F. Collier
John Franklin "Hoyt" Collier, 66, of Ruckersville, passed away Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, at a Charlottesville hospital.
He was born on Nov. 1, 1937, in Greene County, a son of the late George W. and Blanche Morris Collier. He was also preceded in death by a son, John F. Collier Jr., and a sister, Lucille Conley.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Hazel K. Collier of Ruckersville; a daughter, Deborah Townsend and her husband, Greg, of Dyke; three sons, David Edwin Collier and his wife, Tracy, of Louisa, Stuart Allen Collier and his wife, Michelle, and Wendell Wade Collier of Ruckersville; seven sisters, Maxine Shifflett and Edith Marshall of Dyke, Barbara Harris, Vergie Shifflett and Bernice Crawford of Charlottesville, Tessie Conley of Stanardsville and Mary Morris of Crozet; three brothers, Leroy Morris of Dyke, Glen Morris of Palmyra and Calvin Morris of Stanardsville; and five grandchildren, whom he dearly loved, Jessica and Adam Townsend and Amber, Taylor and Storey Collier. He is also survived by his step-father, John A. Morris.
Mr. Collier was a retired roofer and a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at First Bible Baptist Church with the Rev. Elbert Conley officiating and interment in Evergreen cemetery.

Gus George Costas
Gus George Costas, 81, of Lynchburg, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004. He was the husband of Mary Maros Costas.
Born on Oct. 5, 1922, in Lynchburg, he was the son of the late George and Christina Costas.
He attended E.C. Glass High School, where he played saxophone for the school band. While attending the University of Virginia he enlisted in the U.S. Army during WWII. His regiment was part of the Normandy Invasion, which landed on Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944.
Along with his parents, he was a proprietor of The White House Restaurant and later co-owner of C&C Amusement Company. He was a charter member of the Virginia Student Aid Foundation, past-president of Lynchburg’s University of Virginia Alumni Association. He was on the board of directors of The Friends of the Academy of Music and a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Basil Costas, and sister, Bertha Gregores. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, George Costas of Winston-Salem, N.C., Nick Costas and his wife, Constance, and their children, Nicholas and Eliza Costas, of Richmond, and his daughter, Connie Costas of New York City. Also surviving are a sister, Amelia Houliares and her husband, Arthur, and sister-in-law Celeste Costas.
A private family Trisagion service will be held prior to the public visitation today beginning at 7 p.m. at Diuguid Wiggington Chapel, Lynchburg.
A funeral service will be conducted Friday, Jan. 30, at 11 a.m. at St. George Greek Orthodox Church with interment following in Spring Hill cemetery. Following the interment there will be a reception at Oakwood Country Club.

Scybel D. Dorrier
Scybel Davis Dorrier, 80, of Charlottesville, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at her home.
Born on June 17, 1923, in Albemarle County, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence G. and Lollie Watson Davis. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Herman H. Dorrier; a sister, Salome Brown, and a son, Henry L. Dorrier.
She was a member of Hinton Avenue United Methodist Church, and was owner and operator, with her husband, of Belmont Market.
Survivors include a daughter, Janet Hatcher and her husband, Jim, of Charlottesville; four grandchildren, Carol Frazier and her husband, David, of Free Union; Christa Nottingham of Crozet; Sherri Dorrier of Charlottesville and Mike Dorrier, also of Crozet; six great-grandchildren, Tiffanie and Rena Frazier, Ashley and Sara Nottingham, and Dustin and Jason Branch.
The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 7 to 8:30 at the funeral home.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at Hinton Avenue United Methodist Church with the Rev. Edward A. Hopkins officiating. Interment

Robert Vernon Duff Sr., 66, of Ruckersville, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at his home.
He was born on March 12, 1937, in Brightwood, a son of the late William Jennings Duff and Atlee Kidd Duff.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Leona Duff of Ruckersville; three sons, Robert Vernon Duff Jr. and Sandra of Palmyra, Eric Thomas Duff and Melissa of Kansas and William Aaron Duff of Ruckersville; three sisters, Harriett Frank of Richmond, Catherine Snead and Roger of Quinque and Maxine Henry and C.T. of Orange; three brothers, Billy Duff and Nancy of Powhatten, Chuck Duff and Kaye of Charlottesville and Walter Duff and Dawn of Ashland; eight grandchildren, John Michael Ward, Kameron Stuart McGhee, Michelle Elise Duff, Eric Thomas Duff Jr., Robert Jennings Duff, William Aaron Duff Jr., "Jake" and Karsen Olivia Duff; and his dog, Skyler.
Mr. Duff was retired from Klockner Penteplast after 17 years of devoted service.

Robert Melvin Frazier
Robert Melvin Frazier, 72, of Harrisonburg, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2004.
Mr. Frazier was born on Feb. 20, 1931, in Augusta County, and was the son of the late Miley J. and Dealie Morris Frazier. He was a member of the Full Gospel Lighthouse Tabernacle in Elkton.
Mr. Frazier is survived by two brothers, Vernon Frazier and the Rev. Homer Lee Frazier, both of Grottoes; three sisters, Paulien Lucas, Sarah Thornton and Frances Lam, all of Grottoes.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at the Full Gospel Lighthouse Tabernacle in Elkton. Pastor Ronald Spencer and Brother Lloyd Walls will conduct the service. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Church of the Brethren cemetery near Harriston.
The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 to 8 at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Elkton.
