Art Morgenstern
Art Morgenstern, 64, died suddenly on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004 at his Lake Monticello home.
He grew up in New York City, where he was active in the Civil Air Patrol and high school football. After leaving his dad’s furniture business, Art worked as a disc jockey in Pennsylvania and New York. In 1972, he joined ABC-TV in Hollywood as an audio engineer and worked for 25 years doing news, quiz shows, and soap operas at the lot. During the late 70’s and early 80’s, Art covered all the Olympic games (he was privileged to do audio on the famous U.S. Hockey win), the Academy Awards, and major PGA Golf tournaments. He worked for "Good Morning America" for five years setting up audio for live interviews on the show. He often talked about how lucky he was to have met and put microphones on such people as Jamie Lee Curtis, Frank Sinatra, and former Russian President Mikhail Gorbachev. Art thoroughly enjoyed his work, particularly the extensive travel throughout the country for various location shoots.
Although Art lived in Lake Monticello for nearly one year, he had already joined the Charlottesville Astronomical Society (a new interest) and the Fluvanna County Remote Control Flying Club, his life-long hobby. Just boating around the lake on a pretty day brought him much happiness; he felt he was blessed in many ways. Art loved the area and above all, the people he met here. His joy of life and sense of humor made him memorable to old and new friends.
Art will be sorely missed...but as a close friend said…"God wanted a good laugh on the 14Th and naturally picked Art."
He is survived by Cynthia, his wife of 36 years; and his sister-in-law, Carol and her family. Art had just returned from a trip to Florida to visit with Carol, her husband Cameron, and their son Thomas.
Arrangements were made by Sheridan Funeral Home in Kent’s Store.
