Florence B. Mortlock
Florence Bellaby Mortlock, 99, of Charlottesville, died Dec. 12, 2003, in a local nursing facility.
Born on July 29, 1904, in Nottingham, England, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Florence Clarke Bellaby. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Robert Mortlock, and a daughter, June Marotta.
Mrs. Mortlock was a retired bookkeeper. She and her husband founded the Indian River Senior Center in Millsboro, Del., where she was active for many years.
She is survived by a son, Robert Mortlock; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at the Teague Chapel. Private interment was held in Delaware. In lieu of flowers, contributions made be made to Trinity Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 5102, Charlottesville, VA 22905 or Indian River Senior Center, 322 Mitchell St., Millsboro, DE 19966.

Velna W. Pugh
Velna Winget Pugh, 90, died Dec. 24, 2003, in Anaheim, Calif.
Born on May 27, 1913, in Gastonia, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Henry G. and Belle Wilson Winget. Her husband, David H. Pugh Jr., also preceded her in death; as did a sister, Ann Griffin.
Survivors include her daughter, Mary P. Wilson and her husband Edward of Cerritos, Calif.; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Jan. 7, 2004, at Monticello Memory Gardens.

A graveside service for Pauline Dalton Shore will be held at 2 p.m. today at Monticello Memory Gardens with Dr. Rick Sadler and the Rev. Clarke Hawkins officiating.

Marvin V. Ackerman
Marvin Vincent Ackerman, of Bowie, Md. died Wednesday, March 31, 2004.
He was the loving husband of Muriel Marie Ackerman; beloved father of Robert Ackerman (Luba) and Dr. Donna Ackerman of Gordonsville; grandfather of Emily and Jennifer Ackerman.
A graveside funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 3, 2004, in Maplewood cemetery, Gordonsville, with military honors. The Rev. Olin Herndon will officiate.
The family will receive friends at the home of Dr. Ackerman immediately following the service.

William C. Clontz
William Charles Clontz, 89, of Charlottesville, passed away Wednesday, March 31, 2004, following a lengthy illness.
Born Nov. 25, 1914, in Forsythe County, N.C., he was the son of the late Charles C. Clontz and Mattie McCall Clontz. He was also predeceased by a daughter, Kathleen Graves, and two brothers.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Dorryce Powell Clontz; a sister, Martha C. Miller of Hickory, N.C.; two grandchildren, W. Steven Graves of Charlottesville and Anne D. Graves of Hilton Head, S.C.; and four great-grandchildren.
Mr. Clontz was a retired pilot and his passion and pride was in flying. He served his country during World War II as a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps piloting transport planes. He was a member of Widow Sons Masonic Lodge No. 60, Acca Temple Shrine, a past member of Charlottesville Elks Lodge and Charlottesville Host Lions Club.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 3, 2004, at Riverview cemetery, with Dr. Joel P. Jenkins officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Hill & Wood Funeral Home.

Robert L. Kellogg
A memorial service for Robert L. Kellogg will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 3, 2004, at the University of Virginia Chapel. Following the service there will be a reception at Carr’s Hill.
Roy L. Navarre
Roy Louis Nevarre of Trevillians, Louisa County, died Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at his residence.
Born Feb. 6, 1928, in Plaquemine, La., he was the son of the late Edward and Ida Blanchard Navarre. Mr. Navarre was a retired drywall contractor and a Navy veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Juanita Schnider Navarre of Trevillians; two daughters, Cherie Annette Scott and her husband, Glen, and Debra Ann Dove and her husband, William, all of Trevillians; two sons, Roy Edward Nevarre of Pennsylvanie and David William Navarre of Richmond; brother, Larry Navarre and his sister, Mary Hellen Burke, both of Port Allen La.; eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 5, 2004, from Gordonsville Baptist Church with Pastor Carmen Hartsfeld officiating. Interment
will follow at Culpeper National cemetery with full military honors provided by the Culpeper American Legion Post #330 and the Culpeper V.F.W. Post # 2524 with Father George Griffin officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, at the Preddy Funeral Home, 250 West Main St. in Orange.

Daisye W. Purcell
Mrs. Daisye Wilkins Purcell, 88, a resident of 33 Monument Avenue in Harrisonburg, died at 2:21 Wednesday afternoon, March 31, 2004, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.
A daughter of the late Wheeler D. and Minnie Hawse Wilkins, she was born on April 5, 1915, in Hardy County W.Va., but had made her home in Harrisonburg for over 50 years. Mrs. Purcell was a registered nurse at Rockingham Memorial Hospital for 23 years and was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
On Nov. 30, 1939, she married
Edward Purcell III, who preceded in death on Dec. 5, 1975.
Surviving are three sons, Edward W. Purcell, David L. Purcell and James K. Purcell, all of Charlottesville; two daughters, Mary Helen Purcell of New York, N.Y.; and Sara P. Claybrook of Manitowoc, Wisc.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 3, from the Chapel of the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home with Father Jim Gallagher officiating. Burial will follow in Woodbine cemetery. The casket will be closed.
The family will receive friends at her residence today.

Elizabeth M. Sanford
Elizabeth Miller "Lib" Sanford, 94, of Orange, died Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at her residence, Kenwood.
Born Oct. 19, 1909, in Gold Brown Hollow, Rappahannock County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Darius Lyle and Elizabeth Strother Miller. Her husband was the late Wallace W. Sanford Jr. Also preceding her in death was a brother, Darius Lyle "Bee" Miller and her sister, Mary Bolts Quaintance.
Mrs. Sanford graduated State Teacher’s Collete at Harrisonburg, June 12, 1929. She was a retired school teacher in Flint Hill and a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church. She was also an accomplished tennis player and avid gardener, and loved to read.
Survivors include sons, Wallace W. "Monk" Sanford III and his wife, Carolyn, and Lyle Miller Sanford; grandchildren, Carmon Sanford Jenkins and her husband, Larry, Carri Sanford Fanning and her husband, Chris, and Wallace W. "Chip" Sanford IV; great-granddaughter, Skylar Elise Pritchett; and step great-granddaughter, Amber Jenkins.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 4, 2004, in Graham cemetery with Pastor John Edwards officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 3, 2004, at the Preddy Funeral Home, Orange.

Troy Walker
Troy Walker, 36, of Louisa County, died Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
Born May 5, 1967, in Charlottesville he was the son of Lloyd Jr. and Geraldine Price Walker, both of Louisa.
Mr. Walker was survived by one brother, Lloyd Walker III of Seattle, Wash.; a maternal grandmother, Mrs. Gertie Price, of Louisa; aunts, uncles, neices, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 4, 2004, at County Line Baptist Church, Goochland, Va., with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The Rev. Walter Jones will officiciate.
His remains will lie in state at the funeral home from 11a.m to 8p.m. Saturday, April 3, 2004.

William C. Clontz

Anna Lohr Early
Anna Lohr Early, 97, died peacefully at her home in Branchlands Village, Charlottesville, on Sunday, March 28, 2004.
She was the widow of Judge R.N. Early of Greene County. She was born in Madison County in 1907, the daughter of the late Joseph Edgar Lohr and Indie Tucker Lohr. Her four brothers, Atwell, Orville, Ed and Benjamin, predeceased her; as did her sister, Betty Lohr Wilhoit; and her grandson, John Steven Shelton.
She is survived by two sisters, Pauline L. Campbell of Washington, D.C. and Emily L. Jenkins of Orange; and a sister-in-law, Mary H. Lohr of Chesterfield.
She leaves her daughter, Ann Early Shelton and her husband, Henry; her son, Richard N. Early Jr. and his wife, Rachel; grandchildren, Dr. Ken Shelton and his wife, Marney, and their children, Mason, Tarah, Houston and Tucker of Hendersonville, N.C., Susanna Shelton and her friend, Chris Carlisle, of Tauranga, New Zealand, Richard N. Early III and his wife, Leigh, and their daughter, Anna Caroline, who was born on Feb. 21, 2003, Anna’s 96th birthday.
Anna, a retired fourth grade teacher from McIntire School, was a woman of gracious strength and integrity. Her Christian religious beliefs were nurtured at Good Hope Baptist Church in Madison County and she later became a charter member of Broadus Memorial Baptist Church. She was a past regent of the Montpelier Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a member of the House of Burgess Chapter of the Colonial Dames, a member and past president of the Spotswood Trail Garden Club in Greene County, and a former chaplain for the Woman’s Club of Charlottesville.
Her caretakers became a part of her family, and to Carrie Clements, Shirley Lee, Angelita Murphy, and her daughter, Amanda, and Donna Stiles, the family wishes to extend its gratitude for their loving kindness. Thanks are also extended to the Hospice of the Piedmont and their caring staff as well as to Dr. Mary Preston, her physician.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 1, 2004, at Hill & Wood Funeral Home, 201 N. First St., Charlottesville. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 2, 2004, at Broadus Memorial Baptist Church, located at 1525 Stoney Point Road (Route 20 North). Interment
will follow at Monticello Memory Gardens on Route 53. Following the interment, a reception to celebrate Anna’s long and meaningful life will be held at the home of Ann and Henry Shelton, 2007 Lewis Mountain Road, Charlottesville.

Norman W. Littlejohn
Norman W. Littlejohn, 66, retired Lt. Col. U.S. Army and Federal Government retiree, died March 23, 2004, following a cerebral hemorrhage while vacationing with Kathryn, his wife of 45 years, in San Diego, Calif.
Born in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late William and Mildred Littlejohn and was preceded in death by his daughter, Debbie Clements; a brother, Bill; and a sister, Mildred Atwell.
A 1959 graduate of the University of Virginia, he was commissioned in the US Army and served in both the Artillery and Military Intelligence branches with tours of duty in Korea, Germany, Vietnam, and the U.S. His Federal service was with the Federal Maritime Commission, retiring in 1997 from the Senior Executive Service to relocate to Charlottesville, as home.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Norm Jr. and Mark; two daughters, Karen and Kathy and sons-in-law, Mike Albert, Mark Thomas, and Bob Clements; grandchildren, Katie, Emily, Mike, Makaely, Olivia, and Kylie; and many nieces and nephews.
His passion was his family, and friends will remember him as an avid UVA sports fan, a man of faith and one who loved to travel.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, April 4, 2004, at Teague Funeral Home.
A funeral mass will be offered at 11 a.m. Monday, April 5, 2004, at St. Thomas Aquinas Church.
