James Nelson Thomas
James Nelson Thomas, 88, of Oak Park, Madison County, died Monday, March 29, 2004, at the Culpeper Regional Hospital.
Born Nov. 17, 1915, in Madison County, he was the son of the late Robert Sidney Thomas and Lula Ann Armentrout Thomas. His wife was the late Margaret Arabright Thomas.
Mr. Thomas was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church of Oak Park and retired as a clerk and cashier from Railway Express.
He is survived by two sisters, June Thomas Anderson of Gaithersburg, Md. and Mary Thomas McCuin and her husband, Charles, of Chambersburg, Pa.; three nephews, Michael V. Anderson, Robert W. Thomas III, and Richard Keith McCuin; three great nieces and two great nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 1, 2004, at Preddy Funeral Chapel, Orange, with private interment. The pastor William Clayton will officiate.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Preddy Funeral Chapel, 250 W. Main Street, Orange. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church cemetery Fund, Oak Park, VA.
Dorothy Baker Williams
Dorothy Baker Williams, 78, of Salt Spring, Fla., died in an automobile accident Dec. 24, 2003, in Florida.
Mrs. Williams was preceded in death by her eldest son, Robert Gardner; and her step-son, Danny Williams.
Mrs. Willliams was very active and involved in writing, painting, bridge and other social activities. She published her autobiography, Root and Wings, in 1966, wrote numerous poems, founded a writers forum in Salt Springs, Fla., wrote a weekly column for the Oclala Star Banner, and was in progress with her second book. Her latest adventure was initiation of the Red Hat Lady Society Chapter in Salt Springs.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Cortez Williams of Salt Springs, Fla.; two daughters, Joyce Gardner Sanderson of Florence S.C. and Hope Gardner Dutton of Cypress, Texas; three sons, Glenwood Baker Gardner of Quinton, John Carter Gardner of Hampton, and Woody Mepham of Bradenton, Fla.; three step-daughters, Dena Willimas of Clearwater, Fla., Peggy Walkingstick of Houston Texas, and Donna Niemuth of Berlin, Wis.; two step-sons, Dave Williams of Maryland and Dale Williams of Clearwater, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 3, 2004, at Douglas Presbyterian Church cemetery, in Abilene.

William C. Clontz
William Charles Clontz, 89, of Charlottesville, passed away Wednesday, March 31, 2004, following a lengthy illness.
Born Nov. 25, 1914, in Forsythe County, N.C., he was the son of the late Charles C. and Mattie McCall. He was also predeceased by a daughter, Kathleen Graves; and two brothers.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Dorryce Powell Clontz; a sister, Martha C. Miller of Hickory, N.C.; two grandchildren, W. Steven Graves of Charlottesville and Anne D. Graves of Hilton Head, S.C.; and four great-grandchildren.
Mr. Clontz was a retired pilot and his passion and pride was in flying. He served his country during World War II as a pilot in the US Army Air Corp. piloting transport planes. He was a member of Widow Sons Masonic Lodge #60, Acca Temple Shrine, a past member of the Charlottesville Elks Lodge, and Charlottesville Host Lions Club.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, April 3, 2004, at Riverview cemetery, with Dr. Joel P. Jenkins officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hill & Wood Funeral Home.

Anna Lohr Early
Anna Lohr Early, 97, died peacefully at her home in Branchlands Village, Charlottesville, on Sunday, March 28, 2004.
She was the widow of Judge R.N. Early of Greene County. She was born in Madison County in 1907, the daughter of the late Joseph Edgar Lohr and Indie Tucker Lohr. Her four brothers, Atwell, Orville, Ed and Benjamin, predeceased her; as did her sister, Betty Lohr Wilhoit; and her grandson, John Steven Shelton.
She is survived by two sisters, Pauline L. Campbell of Washington, D.C. and Emily L. Jenkins of Orange; and a sister-in-law, Mary H. Lohr of Chesterfield.
She leaves her daughter, Ann Early Shelton and her husband, Henry; her son, Richard N. Early Jr. and his wife, Rachel; grandchildren, Dr. Ken Shelton and his wife, Marney, and their children, Mason, Tarah, Houston and Tucker of Hendersonville, N.C., Susanna Shelton and her friend, Chris Carlisle, of Tauranga, New Zealand, Richard N. Early III and his wife, Leigh, and their daughter, Anna Caroline, who was born on Feb. 21, 2003, Anna’s 96th birthday.
Anna, a retired fourth grade teacher from McIntire School, was a woman of gracious strength and integrity. Her Christian religious beliefs were nurtured at Good Hope Baptist Church in Madison County and she later became a charter member of Broadus Memorial Baptist Church. She was a past regent of the Montpelier Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a member of the House of Burgess Chapter of the Colonial Dames, a member and past president of the Spotswood Trail Garden Club in Greene County, and a former chaplain for the Woman’s Club of Charlottesville.
Her caretakers became a part of her family, and to Carrie Clements, Shirley Lee, Angelita Murphy, and her daughter, Amanda, and Donna Stiles, the family wishes to extend its gratitude for their loving kindness. Thanks are also extended to the Hospice of the Piedmont and their caring staff as well as to Dr. Mary Preston, her physician.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 1, 2004, at Hill & Wood Funeral Home, 201 N. First St., Charlottesville. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 2, 2004, at Broadus Memorial Baptist Church, located at 1525 Stoney Point Road (Route 20 North). Interment
will follow at Monticello Memory Gardens on Route 53. Following the interment, a reception to celebrate Anna’s long and meaningful life will be held at the home of Ann and Henry Shelton, 2007 Lewis Mountain Road, Charlottesville.

A memorial service for Robert L. Kellogg will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 3, 2004, at the University of Virginia Chapel. Following the service there will be a reception at Carr’s Hill.
Norman W. Littlejohn
Norman W. Littlejohn, 66, retired Lt. Col. U.S. Army and Federal Government retiree, died March 23, 2004, following a cerebral hemorrhage while vacationing with Kathryn, his wife of 45 years, in San Diego, Calif.
Born in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late William and Mildred Littlejohn and was preceded in death by his daughter, Debbie Clements; a brother, Bill; and a sister, Mildred Atwell.
A 1959 graduate of the University of Virginia, he was commissioned in the US Army and served in both the Artillery and Military Intelligence branches with tours of duty in Korea, Germany, Vietnam, and the U.S. His Federal service was with the Federal Maritime Commission, retiring in 1997 from the Senior Executive Service to relocate to Charlottesville, as home.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Norm Jr. and Mark; two daughters, Karen and Kathy and sons-in-law, Mike Albert, Mark Thomas, and Bob Clements; grandchildren, Katie, Emily, Mike, Makaely, Olivia, and Kylie; and many nieces and nephews.
His passion was his family, and friends will remember him as an avid UVA sports fan, a man of faith and one who loved to travel.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, April 4, 2004, at Teague Funeral Home.
A funeral mass will be offered at 11 a.m. Monday, April 5, 2004, at St. Thomas Aquinas Church.

Donald Lee Brill Sr.
Donald Lee Brill Sr., 66, of Barboursville, passed away Saturday, March 27, 2004, at his home.
He was born on April 14, 1937, in Greene County, a son of the late Cecil E. and Lillian Jarrell Brill.
He is survived by his wife, Judith Furik Brill of Barboursville; two daughters, Elizabeth Brill O’Neill and her husband, Michael, of Elkton, and Catherine Brill "Boogie" Pritchett and her husband, Simmy, of Ruckersville; two sons, Donald Lee Brill Jr. and his friend, Donna, of Barboursville, and Robert Scott Brill of Stanardsville; two brothers, Glenn Ray "Pete" Brill and Roger Mason Brill of Stanardsville; and three grandchildren, Kameron Pritchett, Ozzy Brill and Jeremy Brill.
Mr. Brill was a graduate of William Monroe High School. He was semi-retired from Allied Concrete, a member of National Campers, Hikers Association (NCHA) and a member of the Steam and Gas Association.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today at Stanardsville Baptist Church, with the Rev. Leon Castle and the Rev. C.C. Kurtz officiating. Interment
will be at Holly Memorial Gardens.

Dorothy Louise Henry, 84, of Orange, died Monday, March 29, 2004, at the Orange County Nursing Home.
Born May 10, 1919, in Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late William and Rachel Lettner. Her husband was the late Ernest Henry. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Cleo Hood and Ethel Earis; and two brothers, Fred and Arvel Lettner.
Mrs. Henry is survived by a daughter, Edith H. Oliver and her husband, Jerry, of Gordonsville; a stepdaughter, Jean H. Brown and her husband, William, of Orange; two sons, Ernest R. "Bobby" Henry and his wife, Mary, of Mineral, and Smith D. Henry and his wife, Brenda, of Richmond; a brother, Clyde Lettner of Stafford; 10 grandchildren, Kimberly G. Perry, Elaine G. Seal, Ashley G. Mahieu, Carla R. Henry, William D. "Dave" Brown, Elizabeth M. "Beth" Brown, Suzanne E. Brown, Smith D. "Davey" Brown, Stephanie Henry, and Christopher M. McKinney; and 13 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, from Orange Assembly of God Church with interment in Graham cemetery. Pastor Greg Vogt will officiate.

Curtis F. Howell
Curtis Franklin Howell, 78, of Charlottesville, died Sunday, March 28, 2004, in a local hospital.
Born Oct. 6, 1925, in Earlysville, he was the son of the late George Howell and Nora Snow Howell.
Mr. Howell served in Korea with the United States Army and had retired from Frank Ix and Sons.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Carlene Davis Howell; his daughter, Linda Preddy, two sisters Ossie Knight and her husband Ova, Lillie Gibson; a brother George Howell all of Charlottesville; and his granddaughter, Patricia Clark of Richmond; and by a number of nieces and nephews.
A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at Holly Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Sidney Craig officiating.
The family will receive friends this evening from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Hill & Wood Funeral Home.
