Bessie Wood
Bessie Mae Keyseear Wood, 94, of Culpeper, died Thursday, March 25, 2004, at the Culpeper Health Care Center.
Born Aug. 2, 1909, in Ruckersville (Greene County), she was a daughter of the late William Raymond Keyseear and the late Carrie Lee Watson Keyseear. Her husband was the late Walton David Wood.
She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
Mrs. Wood is survived by one daughter, Barbara Wood Miller of Culpeper and her pet Scarlett.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Keyseear and Bertha Keyseear Deane and one brother, Paul Keyseear.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 28, 2004, from the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel, Orange, with interment in Graham cemetery. Pastor Dallas Smith will officiate. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, March 27, 2004, at the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel, 250 W. Main St. Orange, VA.
Ruth K. Gibson
Ruth Kenney Alexander Gibson, 88, of Westminster-Canterbury in Charlottesville, died Friday, March 19, 2004, at Westminster-Canterbury.
Born Feb. 11, 1916, in Clarksburg, Mo., she was the daughter of the late Alfred Kenney Alexander and Clara Belle Briscoe Alexander.
Mrs. Gibson taught in Missouri and Texas for 38 years, and after her retirement she tutored and was a substitute teacher. Mrs. Gibson was a member of Orange Baptist Church and the D.A.R., a descendant of Michael Woods, early settler of Albemarle County, and descendant of Victor Kenney of Bourbon County and Alfred Anderson Alexander of Woodford County, Ky.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Gibson was also preceded in death by her husband, Albert Lee Gibson; two brothers, Alfred Briscoe Alexander and Edward Andrew Alexander; and two sisters, Kathryn Florence Alexander Ruffner and Dorothy Lucille Alexander.
Survivors include a daughter, Kathryn Marlatt and her husband, William C. Marlatt, of Montpelier Station; a grandson, William Kenney Marlatt of San Jose, Calif.; and three nephews, Edward Andrew Alexander of Amarillo, Texas, Richard Lynn Alexander of Lexington, Ky., and John Kemper Ruffner of Sacramento, Calif.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 25, 2004, at First Presbyterian Church, 500 Park St., Charlottesville, with Dr. Gordon Butcher officiating. Interment
will be private.

Mary Jane Owen
Mary Jane Pace Owen, 72, of Charlottesville, died Tuesday, March 23, 2004, in a local hospital.
Born Jan. 3, 1932, in Charlottesville, she was the daughter of the late Phillip George Pace and Mildred Breckenridge Pace. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clarence William Owen; and a sister, Betty Branham.
Mary Jane retired from Comdial in 1988 after 19 years service as an assembler. She was a loving, caring person who dearly loved her family and always had a smile for everyone.
Surviving her is a daughter, Jeannie Easton and her husband, Winky Marks, of Scottsville; two sons, Ronald Owen and his wife, Karen, of Buckingham County and Gary Owen and his wife, Karen, of Louisa; a sister, Orra Lee Pace of Charlottesville; nine grandchildren, Kaitlin Owen, Jennifer Owen, Amanda Owen, Justin Owen, Jeff Owen, Michael Easton, Paul Easton, Sam Easton and his wife, Amanda, and Russell Easton; and one great-grandson, Jonathan.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, March 26, 2004, at Hill & Wood Funeral Home, with pastor Sandy Kelso officiating. Interment
will follow at the Oakwood cemetery, Charlottesville.

Robert E. Shortell
A funeral service for Robert Eugene Shortell will be conducted at 10 a.m. today in the Chapel of the Hill & Wood Funeral Home with the Dr. Jeffery Riddle officiating. Burial will follow noon at Culpeper National cemetery with military honors.

Robert B. Spigle
Robert Benjamin Spigle, 75, of Charlottesville, died Monday, March 22, 2004, at his home in Charlottesville.
Born Nov. 4, 1928, in Botetourt County, he was a son of the late Aubrey William and Fannie Mae Barnhart Spigle. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Rachael Mae Nichols.
Bob retired from General Electric as UL Liaison. He was a past Master of the Catawba Lodge in Fincastle, Va., a Mason with the Widow’s Son Lodge 60, a member of the Scottish Rite, a past-Major of the Provost Guard, a member of the ACCA Shriner Center, and the ROJ. He was also a member of First United Methodist Church, where he served as an usher. Bob also served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.
He is survived by his wife, Drucilla Bolton Spigle; sons, Robert Bejamin Spigle Jr. and his wife, Cindy, of Salt Lake City, Utah, William Edgar Spigle and his wife, Sue Davenport, of Charlottesville; daughters, Teresa Spigle Van de Castle and her husband, Drake, of Charlottesville, Melissa Spigle Lang and her husband, Edward, of Troy; four grandchildren, Leigh Anne Evans and her husband, Mike, of Sarasota, Fla., Benjamin Scott and William Joseph Lang of Troy, and Bryce Van de Castle of Charlottesville; and a great-granddaughter, Caroline Brianna Evans of Sarasota, Fla.; brothers, Aubrey William Spigle Jr. and Edward Wray Spigle; and a sister, Rebecca Anne Jamison.
A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Friday, March 26, 2004, at the Hill & Wood Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Harry Kennon officiating. Interment
will follow at Riverview cemetery.

Kathy Lee Anderson, 43, of Bethesda, Md., formerly of Charlottesville, died Saturday, March 20, 2004, in a Bethesda Hospital.
Born Nov. 16, 1960, in Charlottesville, she was the daughter of Dorothy Allene Lowry Anderson of Bethesda, Md., and the late William Lee Anderson.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her brother, M.W. "Bunkie" Eheart of Bethesda. Md.
A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, March 26, 2004, at Holly Memorial Gardens.

Robert Lee Grinaker
Robert Lee Grinaker, 81, passed away Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at his home in Houston, Texas.
Bob was born in Santa Rosa, Calif., June 6, 1922, to Johannes and Pearl Grinaker. He served 4 years in the United States Navy during World War II, including the V-12 Officer Training Program at Rice and Harvard Universities. Subsequently, he returned to Harvard on the GI Bill and received his MBA. He spent most of his professional life as a professor of accounting. He taught at the Universities of Ohio, Texas, and Houston. Upon retirement, he moved to Charlottesville, Va., where he taught for eight more years at the University of Virginia until his "second retirement". He received many honors for excellence in teaching as well as for his contributions to the accounting profession. In his own words, "I am convinced I chose the right line of work, I love to teach."
He was preceded in death by his son, John. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Virginia; children, Carol, Linda, Nancy and her husband, Tim; grandchildren, Jeff, Jenny and her husband, Danny; great-grandson, Cody Robert; sister, Ruth and her husband, Dick.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. yesterday in the chapel of The Settegast-Kopf Co., 3320 Kirby Drive with Dr. Tom Pace III and the Rev. Leo Schuster officiating.
A graveside service and committal followed at Memorial Oaks cemetery.

Helen M. Hankins
Helen Moyler Hankins, 92, of 3207 Bristol Hwy., died Sunday, March 21, 2004, at her residence.
Mrs. Hankins was a native of Franklin, Va., and had lived most of her life in Johnson City, Tenn.
She was a daughter of the late William Albridgton and Cora Alice Cobb Moyler. Her husband, Dr. Walter Douglas Hankins, in 2001, and one son-in-law, J. Farrell Mathes, also preceded her in death.
She attended Franklin Elementary School, attended and graduated from Duke University, was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority and was the May Queen. Mrs. Hankins did graduate work at UVA, Charlottesville, Va., and UNC,
Chapel Hill, N.C., was a member of the Association of University Women, the John Sevier Daughters of the American Revolution, served on the Board of Governors of Carroll Reece Museum, served on the Teen Town Board and 17 years on the Girls Club Board, completed two terms as president of The Symphony Guild, served on the board of Community Concerts, Library Board, Pro Arts Council, served as a Gray Lady at Mountain Home, was a charter member of the Junior League, and a member of the Fortnightly and Tuesday Book Clubs.
Mrs. Hankins was a member of St. Johns Episcopal Church.
She is survived by her daughter, Calvert Hankins Mathes Williams and her husband, Edwin Winston Williams, of Johnson City, Tenn., and one grandson, Walter Hankins Mathes, of Nashville, Tenn.
A funeral service for Mrs. Hankins will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Johnson City, Tenn. The Rev. Frank M. Cooper IV and The Rev. Margaret Zeller will officiate. Graveside services will follow at Monte Vista Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the church.
