Shirley Ann Ripley
Shirley Ann Hall Ripley, 68, of Ruckersville, died Sunday, March 21, 2004, in Charlottesville.
Born Sept. 5, 1935, in Charlottesville, she was the daughter of the late Edward M. Hall and Lola Kemp Horton Hall. She was also preceded in death by a son, Howard J. Ripley Jr., formerly of Charlottesville, and a brother, Bobby Hall, also formerly of Charlottesville.
Shirley was a homemaker who loved her family and greatly enjoyed playing bingo.
Surviving her are her husband, Howard J. Ripley of Ruckersville; three daughters, Debi Panizari and her husband, Dino, of Bowie, Md., Judy Carole Goolsby of Butner, N.C., Shelby Jean Ripley of Charlottesville; a son, Keith Allan Ripley and his wife, Misty, of Ruckersville; three sisters, Nancy Gibson, and her husband, Jim, of Charlottesville, Doris Shiflett and her husband, Benny, of Earlysville, Martha Goolsby and her husband, Roy, of Ruckersville; a brother, Donald Hall and his wife, Virginia, of Waynesboro; nine grandchildren, Christina Spicer, Tippy McDaniel, Brandy McDaniel, Scotty McDaniel, Amanda Goodsby, Travis Clark, Katelyn Ripley, Sakaria Ripley, and Ashley Ripley; and 10 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to express special thanks to the staff of Martha Jefferson Hospital for their professional and compassionate care.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 25, 2004, in the Hill & Wood Funeral Home with the Rev. Sidney Craig officiating. Interment
will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 24, 2004.
Edith P. Scott
Edith P. Scott, 96, died Friday, March 19, 2004, at Fountainwood Residential Care facility in Orangevale, Calif.
A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., she spent her working years as an elementary school teacher in Princess Anne, Md.; Spotsylvania, Va.; and Charlottesville, Va., where she retired. In 1988, she moved to El Dorado Hills, Calif., to be near her sons.
She was a member of Sylvannah Baptist Church in Spotsylvania, Va., First Baptist Church in Charlottesville, Va., and Cordova Baptist Church in Rancho Cordova, Calif.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, John and Eleanor Scott, and Donald and Mattie Scott. She is also survived by six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Three of her grandchildren, Lisa Jefferson, Cynthia Sullivan, and Alan Scott; and her great-grandson Devin Jefferson, all reside in San Diego, Calif. Her other three grandchildren, Anthony Scott, Brian Scott, and Angela Gulley; plus great-grandson Brandon Scott and great-granddaughter Kyndra Trevino-Scott, all reside in the Sacramento, Calif., area. She is also loved and missed by many other relatives, hundreds of her "darling students, " and countless friends.
A memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Pacific Time, Wednesday, March 24, 2004, at Cordova Baptist Church, 10527 Coloma Road, Rancho Cordova, CA. Her homegoing celebration will be held at noon Eastern Time, Saturday, March 27, 2004, at the Hertford County Undertakers Union, Winton, N.C., 27986. Interment
will be at the Scott Family cemetery in Murfreesboro, N.C.

Robert E. Shortell
Robert Eugene Shortell, 74, of Charlottesville, passed away Saturday, March 20, 2004, at his home.
Born July 17, 1929, in Bellerose, N.Y., he was the son of the late Edward Shortell and Helen Holt Shortell.
Mr. Shortell graduated from Jamaica High School, New York City, attended Delhanty Technical and retired as an electrician. He was a member of the NRA, American Legion and the Rivanna Rifle and Pistol Club. He served with the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Shortell is survived by his wife of 51 years, Marilyn N. Shortell of Charlottesville; his three daughters, Linda Shortell of Seattle, Wash., Helen Andreula and her husband, Philip, of Phoenix, Ariz., and Denise Shortell of Charlottesville; a sister, Yvonne Bookwalter of Albuquerque, N.M.; a brother, Thomas Shortell of West Covina Calif.; and by five grandchildren, Kimberly Short and her husband, Allen, of Nelson County, Megan Samuel of Phoenix, Ariz., Johnathan Samuel of Stoneybrook, N.Y., Philip Andreula and Angelo Andreula, both of Phoenix, Ariz., and by four great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 24, 2004, in the Chapel of the Hill & Wood Funeral Home with Dr. Jeffery Riddle officiating. Burial will follow at noon at Culpeper National cemetery with military honors.
The family will receive friends form 7 to 8 p.m. this evening at the funeral home.

Robert Benjamin Spigle, 75, of Charlottesville, died Monday, March 22, 2004, at his home.

Joyce Burruss
Joyce Denise Carter Burruss, 47, of Charlottesville, died Friday, March 19, 2004, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
Born Sept. 13, 1956, in Louisa County, she was the daughter of Otis M. and Dorothy Johnson Carter Sr. of Louisa. She was preceded in death by a son, Landon Burruss.
In addition to her parents, she was survived by her husband, Roger Lee Burruss of Louisa; son, Derrick O. Carter and his wife, Aimee, of Columbia, S.C.; daughter, Dawn Denise Burruss of Charlottesville; brothers, Otis M. Carter Jr. and his wife, Helen, of Gaithersburg, Md., Herbert Lee Carter and his wife, Kathleen, of Louisa, Michael S. Carter and his wife, Theresa, of Louisa, and Lawrence E. Carter of Louisa; sisters, Deborah C. Trice and her husband, Calvin, of Louisa, and Robin C. Eure and her husband, Tony, of Louisa; and one grandchild, Isaiah M. Coleman.
Mrs. Burruss was formerly employed by Clearfold Manufacturing.
Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 25, 2004, at First Baptist Church, Louisa, with interment at the Poindexter Family cemetery. Pastor Thomas Wooden will officiate. There will be no formal visitation.

William N. Hannah Jr.
William Nathaniel Hannah Jr. died the morning of March 19, 2004, in Richmond.
Born April 3, 1920, in Palmyra, he was the son of the late William N. Hannah Sr. and Cora Bell Wills Hannah.
Mr. Hannah is survived by his wife, Jean Gillis Hannah of Richmond; two sisters, Ashley Bell Montgomery of McLean and Alice Roberta "Bobbie" Lloyd of Pasadena, Calif.; and nine nieces and nephews and their children.
Mr. Hannah attended the University of Virginia and Columbia University. He graduated from Randolph-Macon College in 1941. He served as an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Mr. Hannah spent his career with Lawyers Title Insurance Co. He rose to the office of vice president and retired after serving the company for more than 35 years.
An Eagle Scout who loved the outdoors, Mr. Hannah became an avid golfer. He was a former member of the Hermitage Country Club and often played in the Virginia State Amateur Tournament.
There will be a graveside service at 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 23, 2004, in the cemetery adjacent to Lyles Baptist Church, Wilmington.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Samaritan Fund of Cedarfield, Bon Secours Hospice, or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Calvin E. Marshall
Calvin Eugene "Gene" Marshall died Saturday, March 20, 2004, at his home after a short but brave and courageous battle with cancer. He was 78.
Gene was born June 20, 1925, in Charlottesville, to the late Robert Webster Marshall and Virginia Davis Marshall. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Marshall Payne, and a sister, Maxine Marshall Deeds.
He is survived by a loving and devoted wife of 56 years, Anna Pleasants Marshall; two sons, Robert Anderson Marshall and Ronald Martin Marshall and his wife, Linda Snow Marshall; a sister, Emily Marshall Powell; three grandchildren, Wendy Dawn Shifflett, Thomas Daniel Payne III and Jessica Marie Marshall; two great-grandchildren, Christopher Ryan Shifflett and Leigha Makenzie Shifflett; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gene worked for C&O Railroad for 33 years in Charlottesville and 10 years in Clifton Forge. He also served in the U.S. Marine Corps in World War II from 1943 to 1946. He served and defended his country bravely against the enemy in the Asiatic Pacific Theater, where he was wounded in Iwo Jima and received the Purple Heart.
He enjoyed the outdoors and working in his yard as well as talking to his friends and neighbors. He will truly be missed by his family and friends.

will follow at Mooreland Baptist Church cemetery, North Garden. The family will receive friends 7 to 8 this evening, March 22, 2004, at Teague Funeral Home.

A funeral service for John Tavner Marshall will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Spring Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dan Carlton officiating. Interment
will take place in the church cemetery.

Ernest E. Messick Jr.
Ernest Edward Messick Jr., 78, of Columbia, died March 20, 2004, in Memorial Regional Medical Center.
He was born Nov. 12, 1925, in Norfolk, a son of the late Ernest Edward Messick Sr. and Lucille Traylor Stephens Messick. He was also preceded in death by a son, Ernest Edward Messick III, and a daughter, Cheri Curry.
Ernest was the owner of Ermesco Steel & Metal Products Co., a retired tax preparer and served in the Merchant Marines. He was a member of St. Mary Episcopal Church, Norfolk.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Edna Wood Messick of Columbia; three sons, John Roy Messick of Calif., Steven Leroy Messick and Charles Edward Messick, both of S.C.; one stepson, Wade Butler of Goochland; two daughters, Cheyenne Leitzsey of S.C. and Marie Burns of Miss.; one brother, Andrew Messick of N.C.; a devoted sister-in-law, Janet Parrish of Hadensville; 18 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and many special friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 23, 2004, at the Sheridan Funeral Home chapel, Kents Store, conducted by the Rev. Tim Jones. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.

Mildred Warner
Mildred Heath MacGregor Warner of Fairfax died Friday evening, March 19, 2004, at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
Friend, confidant and beloved wife of Ltc. (Ret.) Westford D. Warner and mother of Westford E. Warner, Mildred was born in Charlottesville on March 31, 1945. She was raised in Nelson County and attended St. Margaret’s School and Mary Baldwin College.
She married
Westford Warner on Oct. 8, 1966, and began a career as an Army wife that spanned three decades and included tours in Germany, Korea and the U.S. She endured the separations associated with the military and served the military family of which she became a part.
She worked at the Kings Park Veterinary Clinic in Burke before recently working as an assistant librarian at St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes School in Alexandria for nine years, where her son also attended and now teaches.
Mrs. Warner is survived by her husband, son and a sister, Mrs. Martin D. Ballantine of Charlottesville.
A service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 24, 2004, at Rodes United Methodist Church in Afton. Burial will follow at Hebron Baptist Church cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Richard Beale, Mr. Martin D. Ballantine Jr., Mr. Robert Stine, Mr. David West, Mr. Herbert Pickford and Dr. Christy Carrico Keene. Friends attending the service will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Leonard Chittum
Leonard Belvidere "Bo" Chittum, 92, of Staunton died Tuesday afternoon, March 16, 2004, at his home following a short illness. He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather.
He was born in Timber Ridge, Rockbridge County, on Dec. 8, 1911, the youngest of four children of William McClanahan Chittum and Nora Alice Swope Chittum. He was educated in Staunton public schools where he had a notable athletic career, serving as captain of the 1930-1931 R.E. Lee High School team that won the Class B state basketball championship. He continued his education at Hampden-Sydney College where he played football and basketball and was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity.
He served during World War II with the U.S. Army, and retired from the E.I. Dupont Company in Waynesboro in 1972, with 38 years’ service. He enjoyed active retirement by working on the family tree farm near Churchville and assisting with the retail Christmas tree business in Charlottesville.
Mr. Chittum served on the boards of Historic Staunton Foundation, the Shenandoah Valley Council of the Navy League, the Augusta County Historical Society, and the United Way, and was past president of the Augusta-Rockingham chapter of Hampden-Sydney Alumni. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Staunton.
In addition to his wife, Elsie (Rickenbrode) Chittum, he is survived by a son, C. Rick Chittum, and a grandson, W. Brodie Chittum, both of Churchville; and by two nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. today, at First Presbyterian Church in Staunton, conducted by Dr. L. Randolph Harrison. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
