Sarah Jett Frost
Sarah Jett Frost died Thursday, March 18, 2004, at her home in the Wilmington section of Fluvanna County.
Sarah was born Jan. 29, 1935, in Norfolk, Va., and lived there most of her life. She was the founder and for 20 years the head of the highly respected Ghent Montessori School in Norfolk. After her retirement in 1999, she moved to Fluvanna County.
Sara Frost is survived by her brother, Rice Arthur Jett Jr. of Norfolk; her husband, Laurence W. Frost; her daughters, Sarah Eames of New York City and Megan Trebble of Charlottesville and her sons, Robert L. Frost of Raleigh, N.C., and Matthew W. Frost of Bluefield, W.Va.; and her nine grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at First Lutheran Church in Norfolk at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 23, 2004, with interment at the U.S. Naval Academy Columbarium at a later date with the immediate family.

William N. Hannah Jr.
William Nathaniel Hannah Jr. died the morning of March 19, 2004, in Richmond, Va.
Born April 3, 1920, in Palmyra, he was the son of the late William N. Hannah Sr. and Cora Bell Wills Hannah.
Mr. Hannah is survived by his wife, Jean Gillis Hannah of Richmond; two sisters, Ashley Bell Montgomery of McLean, and Alice Roberta "Bobbie" Lloyd of Pasadena, Calif.; nine nieces and nephews and their children.
Mr. Hannah attended the University of Virginia and Columbia University. He graduated from Randolph-Macon College in 1941. He served as an officer in the United States Navy during World War II.
Mr. Hannah spent his career with Lawyers Title Insurance Company. He rose to the office of vice president and retired after serving the company for over 35 years.
An Eagle Scout who loved the outdoors, Mr. Hannah became an avid golfer. He was a former member of the Hermitage Country Club and often played in the Virginia State Amateur Tournament.
There will be a graveside service at 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 23, 2004, in the cemetery adjacent to Lyles Baptist Church, Wilmington, Va.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Samaritan Fund of Cedarfield, Bon Secours Hospice, or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Ruby Mae Johnson
Ruby Mae Johnson 61, of Orange died Thursday, March 18, 2004, at the Trinity Missions in Charlottesville.
Born Nov. 5, 1942, in Shelby N.C., she was the daughter of the late Willie Hines Sr., and the late Amy Jones Hines. Her husband was the late William Johnson. She was retired from Comdial of Charlottesville.
She is survived by one son, Davin Johnson of Orange; five brothers, Gregory Hines, Steve Hines, Darrell Hines, Jerome Hines, and Franklin Hines, all of Shelby N.C.; two sisters, Delores Hines, of Shelby N.C., and Beverly Guyton, of Charlottesville; one grandchild, Trenldi M. Johnson, of Orange; a number of nieces and nephews and a host of relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Willie Hines and Edmond Hines and one sister, Mae Hines.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 24, 2004, from the Preddy Funeral Chapel in Orange with interment in Oakwood cemetery in Charlottesville, the Rev. Loretta Strother will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Preddy Funeral Home, 250 W. Main Street, Orange, Va.
Grace Kerns
A service for Grace Kerns will be held at 2 p.m. today at Orange Assembly of God Church, conducted by Pastor Greg Vogt, with burial at North Pamunkey Baptist Church.
Pallbearers are Herman "Spike" and Matt Richards, Tom Schweinfuss, John Wilson, Shawn Houston, Grant Carpenter, John Cliser and Richard Vogt.

Arvel E. Lettner
Arvel Edward Lettner, 75, of Louisa, died Friday, March 19, 2004, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.
He was born May 9, 1928, in Friendship, Tenn., a son of the late William Lettner and Rachel Clark Lettner.
Mr. Lettner is survived by his wife, Lula Ellen Lettner of Louisa; two daughters, Odine Taylor and her husband, Lonnie, of Stanardsville, Lois Berry and her husband, Mason, of Front Royal; two sons, Edward Arvel Lettner and his wife, Audrey, of Gordonsville, Allen Lettner and his wife, Diane, of Trevilians; one brother, Clyde Lettner of Taswell; one sister, Dorothy Henry of Orange; six grandchildren, Eddie Thomas, whom he helped raise, Belinda Berry, Ellen Thompson, Donnie Lettner, Rachel Lettner, Andy Lettner and six great-grandchildren, Savannah Thomas, Christa Thomas, Garrett Mitchell, Jordan Lettner, T.J. Lettner and Steven Lettner.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Steven D. "Red" Lettner and a sister, Ethal Earls.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 22, 2004, in the Craigs Baptist Church cemetery, Mine Run, officiated by the Rev. Frank Walton.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Orange.

Calvin E. Marshall
Calvin Eugene Marshall, 78, of Charlottesville, died Saturday March 20, 2004, at his home.

John T. Marshall
John Tavner Marshall, 70, of Ruckersville, died Friday, March 19, 2004, at his home.
He was born April 30, 1933, in Ruckersville, a son of the late David Howard and Bertha Roberts Marshall. He was preceded in death by his son, Tavner H. Marshall and a granddaughter, Morgan Kendall Shifflett.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 47 years, Ann Cason Marshall; two daughters, Teresa Gilbert and her husband, Frank, of Afton, La Verne Shifflette and her husband, Glen of Stanardsville; one daughter, Jessica Gilbert of Evinton, Va.; two grandsons, Arron Gilbert of Richmond, Matthew Shifflett of Stanardsville; three sisters, Joyce Taylor of Stanardsville, Eleanor Pace of Ruckersville and Jane Haney and her husband, Harol of Richmond; and one brother, David H. Marshall of Martinsburg, W.Va.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He worked for the F.A.A. as a mechanic for 35 years before retiring in 1999. He was an active cattle farmer and enjoyed farming.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, at Spring Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dan Carlton officiating. Interment
will take place in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Ryan Funeral Home.
Friends and family are invited to gather in the fellowship hall following the service. All food donations, please bring to the church.
Robert E. Shortell
Robert Eugene Shortell, 74, of Charlottesville, died Saturday, March 20, 2004, at his residence.

Lillie Taylor
Lillie Pearl Marks Taylor, 82, of Stanardsville, died Friday, March 19, 2004, at her residence.
Born June 3, 1921, in Madison County, she was the daughter of the late Kate Marks and her husband was the late William Leon Taylor.
She was a member of Fairview Christian Church in Hood. Lillie was a dedicated and loving grandmother, mother, friend, and a member of the Distinguished Dozen. Lillie retired from the Greene County school district with 50 years of service.
She is survived by one brother, James Marks and his wife, Mary, of Stanardsville; two grandchildren, Tammy Shifflett and her partner, Leonard Randel, Lisa Weakley and her husband, Charles, all of Stanardsville; three great-grandchildren, Kasey Lynn Weakley, Heather Marie Shifflett and Kaitlyn Michelle Shifflett, and one niece, Pat Marks, all of Stanardsville; and one aunt, Florence Clore of Madison.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel, Madison, conducted by Dr. Tommy Palmer with interment at Liberty cemetery in Middle River.

Pauline Weaver
Pauline Via Weaver died Thursday, March 18, 2004. She was born March 30, 1903.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jeanne and Raymond Norton of Gordonsville; her granddaughter, Patrica Young of Keswick; her grandson and his wife, Bruce and Pamela Campbell of Phoenixville, Pa.; her great-grandchildren, Michele Ritter of Gordonsville, Jacquelyn Berry and her husband, Mark, of Palmyra and Jennifer Osinski of Norristown, Pa.; her great-great-grandchildren, Mallory and Blake Berry, both of Palmyra.
Following a family-only burial, a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 22, 2004, at Christ Episcopal Church, Gordonsville.

Robert F. Bright
Robert Fisher Bright, 65, formerly of Scottsville, died after a long illness on March 14, 2004, in Dover, Del.
He was born in Fairmont, W.Va., the son of the late C. M. "Cute" and Nancy Fisher Bright. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn Hall Bright; two brothers, Franklin and John; and two sisters, Colleen and Jo Ann. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
He is survived by his daughter, Bobbi Kay Hensley and her husband, Kevin; two grandsons, Will Smith and Hunter Hensley; sister and her husband, Mary and Ed Aldridge; special niece, Nancy Kidd and her husband, Charles, all of whom are Scottsville residents. In addition, he is survived by another sister and her husband, Sue and Ivan Bailey of Georgetown, Del.; a sister-in-law, several other nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held on March 18, 2004, in Flatwoods, W.Va., with burial in the Fisher Family cemetery near Sutton. Stockert-Gibson Funeral Home, Flatwoods, was in charge of arrangements.
Ann Mae Clarkson
Ann Mae Clarkson, 77, of Sunset Drive, Arrington, died Thursday night, March 18, 2004, at Lovingston Health Care Center.
She was born June 2, 1926, in Nelson County, a daughter of the late John Joseph Clarkson and Irene Carter Clarkson Gardner.
Nan attended Nelson County Public Schools, Madison College and The University of Maryland. She was a teacher with Bedford County Public Schools and retired from Prince George’s School System in Upper Marlboro, Md.
She was a member of the Church of the Epiphany in Amherst and attended Trinity Episcopal Church at Oak Ridge serving on the Vestry, Alter Guild and President of the Episcopal Church Women.
Nan was a member of the Nelson County Garden Club, Nelson County Historical Society, First Families of Amherst County, Member and Past Regent of Rockfish Valley Chapter National Society Daughters of The American Revolution, Member and past President of Albemarle Chapter #154 United Daughters of The Confederacy, Member of The House of Burgesses Chapter Colonial Dames 17th Century.
She is survived by her brother, Elgin H. Clarkson and his wife, Kathryn, of Arrington; three nephews, William E. Clarkson of Arrington, John S. Clarkson and his wife, Jonna, of Shipman, and Peter C. Clarkson of Arrington; and two great-nieces Samantha and Megan Mann.
Memorial services will be announced at a later date.

Gladys Fitzgerald
Gladys Tomes Fitzgerald, 85, of 2074 Rice Ave. went to be with her Lord on Thursday morning March 18, 2004. She was a recent resident of Augusta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born April 10, 1918, in Schuyler, Va., the daughter of the late Robert W. Wade and Leslie Estelle Craig Wade.
She was a life-long member of Basic United Methodist Church and for many years she had a beautician business in her home.
Mrs. Fitzgerald was an avid bowler in the Waynesboro and Staunton Bowling leagues and she loved to play Bingo and cards. She was a faithful Atlanta Braves fan. She loved to play piano and she enjoyed the flowers she grew in her yard and home. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and her life was her family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Grover William Tomes; her sister, Lucille Wade Currier; and two brothers, Joseph Wade and Spurgeon Wade.
She is survived by her husband, Elwood I. Fitzgerald, who is retired from Crompton Shenandoah with 37 years of service; three daughters, Charlotte Tomes Hodge and her husband, John M. Hodge, of Lyndhurst, Sandra Tomes Evans of Gainesville, Ga., and Dianna Tomes Helmick and her husband, Will Helmick, of Staunton; a step-son, Randy R. Fitzgerald and his wife, Mona Fitzgerald, of Waynesboro; a step-daughter, Diane Rebecca Lucas of Waynesboro; her brother, Robert Wade of Schuyler; her sister, Virginia Wade Short of Vinton; six grandchildren Anthony and Mark Hodge, Brandan and Paul Whitmer, Kimberly Paige Coffey and Leslie Estelle Helmick; four step-grandchildren, Dallas and Eric Fitzgerald and Chris and Angela Lucas; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Funeral Service at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 23, 2004, with the Rev. Loretta Benninghove and the Rev. Billy Coffey officiating. Burial will follow in Augusta Memorial Park.
Active pallbearers will be Mark Hodge, Anthony "Tony" Hodge, Paul Whitmer, Randy Fitzgerald, John Hodge, Lewis Whitmer, Will Helmick and Dean Coffey. Honorary pallbearers will be, Jess Bridge, Sonny Robinson, Maynard Patterson, Geraldine Quick, Glenn and Jean Miller, Eric Fitzgerald, Dallas Fitzgerald, Charles E. Fitzgerald, Brandan Whitmer, Kimberly Coffey, Leslie Helmick and Daniel Tomes Hodge.
