Gloria Dawn Mays
Gloria Dawn Mays, 26, of Laurel Rd. Shipman, died Sunday, March 14, 2004.
Born Jan. 16, 1978, in Lynchburg she was the daughter of David Wayne and Betty W. Mays and a devoted stay at home mom.
She is survived by two children, Tomas Diego Mays and Brianna Nichole Mays; her mother, Betty Willoughby Mays of Shipman; her father, David Wayne Mays and wife, Lynn, of Roseland; a brother, Michael Wayne Mays of Shipman; and four aunts, Florence Roberts and husband, Claude, of Shipman, Nellie Sharpe and husband, Ted, of Richmond and Ann Banton and husband, Mickey, of Shipman. She is also survived by her boyfriend, Jose Garcia of Roseland.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 17, 2004 at the Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel in Lovingston with the Rev. Carroll Martin and the Rev. Dave Peters officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at the funeral home.

Mary J. McIntosh
Mary "Mimi" Josephine McIntosh, 96, of Charlottesville, formerly of Highland Park and Oak Park, Ill., died at Rosewood Village on Sunday, March 14, 2004.
Born Jan. 20, 1908, in Chicago, Ill., she was the daughter of the late Andrew Kasprovicz and Barbara Skaniechni Kasprovicz. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Walter Kenneth McIntosh; and four sisters, Harriet Whelan, Isabelle Tyson, Esther Slaski, and Grace Terre.
Surviving her are her daughter, Min Dahn of Charlottesville; her son, Peter McIntosh and his wife, Erin Garvey, of Charlottesville; and three grandchildren, Eliza Duenow of Chicago, Zachary Duenow and his wife, Dorothea, of Chicago and Kathryn McIntosh of Charlottesville.
The family would like to express special thanks to the caring staff and administration at Rosewood Village and the wonderful staff of Martha Jefferson Infirmary.

Mabel J. Michie
Mabel J. Michie, 77, of Charlottesville, died March 12, 2004, at Trinity Mission in Charlottesville.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Johnson Sr. and Mabel J. Johnson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, George Johnson, Leroy Johnson, and Joseph Johnson Jr.; two sisters, Rebecca F. Johnson and Alberta Stroman and husband, Robert Michie Sr.
She leaves to cherish her memory two stepsons, Bishop Robert J. Michie II and wife, Evelena, of Charlottesville and Alvin D. Michie of Richmond; one brother, Osiah Johnson and wife, Jean, of Florence, S.C.; two sisters, Ella Brown of Keswick and Ruth Williams and husband, John, of Charlottesville; two sisters-in-law, Rosa Johnson and Verdell Johnson, both of Charlottesville; a host of grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; two nieces, Vickie Lewis and her husband, Nathaniel Jr., of Richmond and Marcia Brinson of Charlottesville; six great-nephews; and a host of cousins and other relatives and friends.
She was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Charlottesville.
Funeral services will be held at 12 noon Wednesday, March 17, 2004, in the chapel of R.L. Gilliam Funeral Home with Bishop Robert J. Michie II officiating. Interment
will be at Oakwood cemetery.

Audrey E.D. Payne
Audrey Elizabeth Deavers Payne, 78, of Zions Crossroads, died Saturday, March 13, 2004, in Albemarle County.
Born Feb. 14, 1926, in Albemarle County, she was the daughter of the late James Franklin Deavers and the late Etta Jenkins Deavers.
Mrs. Payne was a long-time member of Zion United Methodist Church and retired from Comdial of Charlottesville.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Carroll S. Payne; one daughter, Cathy P. Harlow and her husband, Gerald, of Zions Crossroads; two sons, Michael K. Payne and his fiance, Jo Higgins, of Crozet and Donald B. Payne of Zions Crossroads; four grandchildren, Jason Harlow of Charlottesville, Aaron Harlow and his wife, Megan, of Zions Crossroads, Ashley Payne and Devan Payne of Palmyra; one great-grandchild, Abigayle Ana Harlow; one brother, Leonard B. "Dennie" Deavers of Hampton; four sisters, Vallie Trainham and Jean Miller, both of Hampton, Louise Wolfrey of Orange and Bessie Wilson of North Carolina. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Frances Watson; and three brothers, Harold Deavers, John Deavers, and James "Junior" Deavers.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at Zion United Methodist Church with interment in the church cemetery. The Rev. Will Montgomery will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight at Zion United Methodist Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to Zion United Methodist Church, the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.
Audrey was a devoted Christian who loved her Lord, her church and her family. She sang in the choir and taught Sunday school for many years. She was a true inspiration and blessing to her family and all who knew her.
PallBearers will be Jason Harlow, Aaron Harlow, Devan Payne, William "Buster" Payne, William "Billy" Pippin, Ronnie Deavers, Jeff Deavers and Keith Holley.

Charles M. Pollard
Charles M. "Gus" Pollard passed peacefully at home on Sunday, March 14, 2004.
Owner of Pollard GMC, Inc. for over 40 years, he was loved by everyone who knew him.
Born April 3, 1928, in Cartersville, he was son of the late Frank Pollard and Verna Robertson Pollard.
He was Salutatorian of his Scottsville High School Class of 1946 and received a scholarship to UVA. Instead, he pursued his love of automobiles, eventually becoming the premier area heavy-duty truck dealer with both GMC and International franchises. He was one time President of the Charlottesville-Albemarle Automobile Dealer’s Association and in 1987 was one of 18 national truck dealers to be honored as a dealer of the year in Dallas, Texas upon retiring that year. He continued to be active as a classic car restorer, antique collector, homebuilder, landowner and landlord.
He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Mary Clemmer Pollard; his daughters, Deborah Frazier and husband, Paul, and Mary Poole and husband, Allan; his son Charles M. Pollard Jr. and wife, Kim; grandsons, John and Matthew Pollard, and Zachary Poole; and granddaughter, Sarah Katherine Pollard. Additionally, he leaves his brothers, Francis Pollard Jr., Roger Pollard and wife, Betsy; his sister, Rita Burgess and husband, Harold; a sister in law, Emily, wife of his departed brother and best friend, William Pollard; and a good friend of many years, William Wharton.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. today, March 16, 2004, at Monticello Memory Gardens with the Rev. Dr. Bill Jones and the Rev. Tony Monaghan officiating.
The family wishes to thank Hospice of the Piedmont for their kindness and help during the final days. Lastly, a special thanks to Dr. Pritchard, his nurses, and to Mike Nelson and Gloria Ascoli at the Martha Jefferson Hospital Infusion Unit.

Thomas A. Rogan
Thomas Allen Rogan, 87, of Charlottesville, died March 14, 2004.
Born Nov. 2, 1916, in St. Mary’s, Pa., he was the son of the late Henry J. and Lola Allen Rogan. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Anne Rogan.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII and a member of Holy Comforter Catholic Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Arleen Patrician Rogan of Silver Spring, Md. and Dorothy Anne Rogan of Washington, D.C.; and a number of sisters and brothers.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at Holly Memorial Gardens.

Harvey Lee Stoner Sr.
Harvey Lee Stoner Sr., of Rhoadesville, departed from this life on Saturday, March 13, 2004.
Mr. Stoner was born Jan. 3, 1917, and was 87 years old. Living a very vigorous and enjoyable life, he went home to his Lord and Savior. He was the son of the late Freemont F. Stoner and Bertha G. (Brooks) Stoner and Annie Chewning Stoner, his stepmother, all of Spotsylvania County. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Grace.
Mr. Stoner is survived by his five children, Harvey Lee Stoner Jr. and his wife, Brenda, of Barboursville, Joan Stoner McClung and her husband, Robert, of Unionville, Donald S. Stoner and his wife, Joyce, of Phoenix, Ariz., M. Rachel Stoner of Rhoadesville and Linda Stoner Timmons and her husband, Howard "Dootsie", of Unionville; 14 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his best friend and brother-in-law, Robert I. Brown, whom he loved and cherished, sharing with each other the events of the day, comparing notes on the ballgames the night before and the temperature of the morning.
Mr. Stoner had two sisters and one brother, Stanford F. Stoner, Helen Stoner Tedrow and Edna Stoner Mills, who are all deceased.
Mr. Stoner served in WWII in the U.S. Army. After his service, he worked for Bethlehem Steel Co. and then moved to Orange County and was a dairyman for 16 years. He then worked in construction, running heavy equipment. He retired from William A. Hazel Inc. in Chantilly.
He enjoyed his 25 years of retirement, doing all the things he loved best, fishing and hunting with his family and friends. He was also well known in the neighborhood as the "traveling vegetable man." People looked forward to his visits and bought from him, even when they didn’t need anything. An avid gardener, he loved to brag on his big tomatoes and scrumptious green beans. Mr. Stoner never knew a stranger and loved to talk and never forgot a friend. A man of many words, he was vivacious and strong in his values.
Mr. Stoner was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Spotsylvania County, where he was deacon emeritus.
There will be a family night from 7 to 8:30 p.m. tonight, March 16, 2004, at Johnson’s Funeral Home in Locust Grove.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at Fellowship Baptist Church. The Rev. Ronald Panebaker and the Rev. Nancy Stanton McDaniel will officiate.

Elisabeth R. Aaron
Elisabeth R. Aaron, 85, died Wednesday, March 10, 2004, at Fontainbleu Nursing Center in Bloomington, Ind., following a stroke.
She was born Elisabeth Grey Rollins in Gate City, on Sept. 23, 1918, the daughter of Edmonds Droke Rollins and Elisabeth Summers Rollins. When she was very young, the family moved to Bristol, Tenn. She graduated from Tennessee High School in Bristol, Tenn., and from Virginia Intermont College and King College in Bristol. She married
William Spencer Aaron Jr., of Christiansburg, in 1942. They spent the World War II years in Pensacola, Fla., where Mr. Aaron was stationed, and moved to Albemarle County, after the war. Their two daughters were born when the family lived in Keswick. Afterwards they moved to Charlottesville, where Mrs. Aaron lived for almost 40 years, until her move to Bloomington in 1998.
She was employed by the Charlottesville law firm Richmond and Fishburne and later in various capacities at the University of Virginia. At the time of her retirement in 1987, she was the business manager for the Virginia Quarterly Review.
Mrs. Aaron, known as "Diz" to family and friends, found lifelong enjoyment in the many pleasures of her native region -- mountain picnics, meandering country roads, birdwatching, rustic inns, and exploring local history. She followed area sports teams with great interest; her more personal sports were Scrabble and crossword puzzles.
She is survived by her daughters, Elisabeth R. Aaron of Swarthmore, Pa., and Ellen A. Mills of Bloomington, Ind.; and grandchildren, Elisabeth A. Mills and Stephen C. Mills of Bloomington, Ind. William Aaron died in 1965. Mrs. Aaron's brother, Edward M. Rollins of Winston-Salem, N.C. and her sister, Ellen S. Mason of Tampa, Fla., both died in 2001. Additional survivors are her nephew, George Mason of Tampa, Fla.; and her niece, Kimberly M. Gibbs of Kilmarnock.

William "Dick" Gordon
Mr. William (Dick) Gordon departed this life on Friday, March 12, 2004 at a local hospital. He was the son of the late William Henry and Willie Gordon.
He is survived by his wife, Nellie T. Perry Gordon; his niece, Betty Mae Gordon Fitch; three nephews, Marshall, John, and Raymond Gordon; three step-children, Betty Perry-Glass and husband, George Glass, Bennie Perry and Edward Perry; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Helen Gordon, Mrs. Lucy Toliver and Mrs. Robenette Poindexter; five grandchildren; six great grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice Gordon; son, William Algernon Gordon; two brothers, John S. and James O. Gordon; and one sister Alice G. Smith.
At an early age, William joined the First Baptist Church, Main Street in Charlottesville. He received his education from the Charlottesville Public Schools. He served his country through the U.S. Military on active duty during World War II. After an honorable discharge from the military, he joined State Farm Insurance Company, from which he retired in 1981. During his retirement, he and his wife, Nellie, traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and abroad.
Mr. Willam Gordon was a member of the Free Union – Oak Union Helping Hands Club. He was also an active member of Choirs United and Mt. Amos Baptist Church Choir, as well as a trustee of Mt. Amos Baptist Church. He continued to proudly serve these organizations until the time of his death.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at Mt. Amos Baptist Church, Free Union with the Rev. Mary Carey officiating. Interment
will follow in Holly Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the services.
