George F. Purvis II
George F. (Buck) Purvis II, 83, died Tuesday night July 15, 2003 at Johnsons Senior Center in Amherst. Born October 8, 1919 in Nelson Co. he was a son of the late George F. Purvis and Genevieve Browning Purvis. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Mary Sue Bryant Purvis in 1997. He was a retired Conductor for Southern Railroad with 34 years of service. He was a Army veteran of WWII and fought in the North African and Sicilian Campaigns. He took part in the assault on the Notorious Brenner Pass. Twice wounded, he received the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, the Silver Star and a Presidential Citation for Gallantry.
He is survived by his daughter Grace C. (Rinnie) Purvis and husband Phillip of Shipman; two sons George F. Purvis III of Arrington and Thomas H. Purvis and wife Connie of Charlottesville; three sisters Mattie Eaton of Lynchburg, Rebecca Turner of Shipman and Angie Marie Cox of Charlottesville, 6 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel with Rev. Eldon Brydge officiating with Interment
to follow in the Davis cemetery at Shipman with Military Rites accorded by VFW Post #7701 of Colleen.
The family will receive friends Friday from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home and suggest that memorials take the form of contribution to Nelson County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 44, Faber, Va. 22938.

Elizabeth M. Romine
Elizabeth Mary Romine, 92, of Troy, formerly of Manassas, Va., went home to her Lord and Savior early Tuesday morning July 15, 2003, at the Bradford County Manor.
Elizabeth was born on September 7, 1910, in Nelson County Va.; a daughter of the late Edward and Rosa (Hunt) Mayer.
"Granny as she was affectionately known by her family and friends was a member of the Park Side Alliance Church in Manassas, Va.
Mrs. Romine worked many years preparing produce for sale, inspecting and packing Virginia apples and peaches for shipment. She later cleaned Truman Long’s residence in Manassas until her retirement in 1972. "Granny" enjoyed sewing, reading and bible study.
Surviving are; 2 daughters, Catherine Weed and friend, James Morgan both of Troy, Shirley and Roger Himelight of Manassas, Va.; 6 grandchildren, many great grandchildren and great great grandchildren special niece, Hazel Chanclor of Palmyra, Va.
Several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mrs. Romaine was predeceased by her husband of 41 years, Stanley Romine; 5 brothers, Otis "Peg", Kermit, Broadus, Emmitt and Robert Mawyer, and 2 sisters; Zora Harris and Addie Harris.
Her family invites friends to call from 6-8 p.m. this evening, at the Pepper Funeral Home, Springbrook Dr., Canton, Pa. The funeral service will follow at 8 p.m. A graveside service will be held 11:30 a.m., Saturday, in the National Memorial cemetery, Falls Church, Va.

Edward V. Siegel II
Edward Valentine Siegel II died July 12, 2003, at the age of ninety. He was a prominent surgeon and psychiatrist in Hampton Roads who was known for his skill, generosity and compassion. In 1979 he moved with his wife, Mallory, to the farm he loved in Fluvanna County and continued working part-time as a psychiatrist until 1989.
Dr. Siegel was a graduate of Hampden Sydney College and the University of Virginia Medical School, Class of 1940. He was an old-fashioned doctor who practiced the Hippocratic oath to the fullest extent. He helped anyone who came to him; he turned no one away.
Ed Siegel was passionate about preventive medicine, a sustainable global environment and excellence in education. In addition, he was an amateur archaeologist with an avid interest in Native American history and culture. He enjoyed sailing, organic gardening, tree farming and all aspects of nature.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, five daughters, seventeen grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. His son preceded him in death twenty-five years ago.
There will be a gathering to remember his long and productive life on Saturday, July 26 at four- o’clock at Quail Hill Farm. The address is 1542 Poorhouse Lane, Troy, Virginia, 22974.
Antoinette Skulka
Antoinette Skula, 92, of Ruckersville, died Tuesday July 15, 2003 at a Charlottesville Nursing home.
She was born April 20, 1911 in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. a daughter of the late Lawrence and Agnes Paciak Zarkowski. Her husband was the late Joseph Frydrych.
She is survived by two daughters, Florence Robinson of Queens, N.Y. and Loraine Robson and husband Joseph of Ruckersville, two sons, Lawrence Frydrych and wife Susan of Columbia, Md. and Allen Frydrych and wife Donna of Weston, Ct.; a brother, Frank Churchman of Fenwick Island, Del. 8 grandchildren, Laura, Adam, Lynda, Lawren, Christina, Melissa, Sarah and Stephen. She also has 3 great-grandchildren.
A funeral mass will be held at 9:30 a.m., Monday at St. Mary’s Church of Maturnity in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Monsenor Kulik will officiate.
The family will receive friends today at the Ryan Funeral Chapel in Quinque, Va. from 6-8 p.m.

Rachel A. Smith
Rachel Armstead Smith 59, of Charlottesville departed this life on July 14, 2003 at the University of Virginia Medical Center. She was born on November 14, 1943 in Philadelphia, PA to the late Theodore and Ruth Pauline Armstead.
Ms. Smith was educated in the Albemarle County School System and was a member of Zion Baptist Church, North Garden, Virginia, she was also a certified nursing assistant in Charlottesville for many years.
Ms Smith was preceded in death by one sister, Yvonne Armstead; and five brothers, George, Ronald, Charlie, Roland and Tinsley Armstead.
She leaves to cherish her memory two devoted daughters, Wanda Smith and Alicia Smith; one grandson, Joshua Smith all of Atlanta, GA; two sisters Ruth P. Osborne of Harlem, NY and Mary Peggy Allen of Charlottesville; one sister-in-law, Jeanette Caines Armstead of Charlottesville; an Aunt, Mary B. Jones; an uncle Charlie Burton and his wife Leona all of North Garden; a devoted mother-in-law Lillian Byrd of Charlottesville; and a close knit group of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday July 19, 2003 at 11 AM at Zion Baptist Church, North Garden with Minister Delmar Harris officiating. Rozanne S. Smith
Rozanne Sheffield Smith, 60, formerly of Charlottesville, Va., passed away peacefully at her home in Merritt Island, Florida on Saturday, June 28, 2003. She was preceded in death by her father, W.T. (Teeny) Sheffield.
She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Charles, and their son, Stephen, his wife, Kimberly, and grandchildren, Christopher, Ashleigh and Mason Smith. She is also survived by her mother, Viola Sheffield Pugh; brothers, David and Michael Sheffield; and her sister, Winkie Coyne.
Rozanne was a homemaker and loved by all that knew her. She was a member of the 1st Christian Church of Merritt Island, Florida.
A memorial service will be held at the Cherry Avenue Christian Church in Charlottesville, Va., on today, at 6 p.m. with family visitation immediately following at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the American Cancer Society, Cherry Avenue Christian Church, or Weustoff Brevard Hospice, Merritt Island, Florida.
Eleanorose B. Bradley
Eleanorose Boyle Bradley, 79, of Charlottesville died on Sunday, July 13, 2003 in a local nursing facility.
Born January 25, 1924 in Boston, MA, she was the daughter of the late Bill Boyle and Rose Norton Boyle.
She was a 1946 graduate of the Teachers College of the City of Boston in Boston, MA and retired in 1987 as a Unit Coordinator from the University of Virginia Hospital.
She was survived by 3 daughters, Eleanor Norton of Bethesda, MD, Jane Bradley of Crozet, Nancy Fenn of Saint Martin, CA; 3 sons, Albert L. Bradley, Jr. of El Cajon, CA, William P. Bradley of Charlottesville, and John C. Bradley of Charlottesville; 4 grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, July 19, 2003 at Hill and Wood Funeral Home.
Ernest F. Crane
Ernest Franklin Crane died on July 14, 2003 in Orange. Born April 10, 1928 on "Horseshoe" farm near Rapidan, Va. he was the next to youngest of eleven children born to the late Allie William and Bettie Lee Brown Crane. He leaves behind his wife, Peggy Newman Crane. Two sons, Jeffrey L. Crane and wife Kathy of Culpeper and Kevin S. Crane of Orange; Three Grandchildren, Daniel A. Crane and Elizabeth A. Crane of Culpeper and Christopher Crane of Orange. One surviving brother, Newton B. Crane and wife Alice of Culpeper.
Survivors also include sister-in-laws Barbara N. Bartley of Orange, Helen N. Piazza and husband Sal of revere, MA, Frances A. Newman of Rhodesville, Maxine B. Crane of Culpeper and Barbara M. Crane of True Blue; Brothers in law Carroll E. Newman of Topeka, KS and Robert Daggett of Kennebunkport, ME along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Upon his graduation from Orange High School in 1945, Ernest enlisted in the United States Navy and served aboard the Destroyer USS Meredith and witnessed the end of World War II. After the war Ernest developed a legacy on Main Street in Orange having been in business for over 50 years selling Esso, Exxon and Texaco products. He was an avid baseball fan and fisherman. Ernest was a former Little League coach and Scout master. He served as a Deacon for many years at the Orange Baptist Church, where he was a member. Ernest was a Charter member of the Orange Kiwanis Club and a Life Member of the Orange County Rescue Squad.
Pallbearers named are tom Woolfolk, Carter Jacobs, Buddy Shumate, Eugene Byrum, Royce Hughes, G.L. Haney, Jr., Pete Modena, and Steve Hopkins.
Services will be conducted by Dr. Stanley Johnson at the Orange Baptist Church on Friday, July 18, 2003 at 1 p.m. with interment in the Emanual Episopal cemetery in Rapidan. The family will receive friends will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday July 17, 2003 at the Preddy Funeral Home in Orange.
Memorial contributions can be made of the Orange County Rescue Squad and the Hospice of the Rapidan.
Frances F. Edmunds
Frances Fitzpatrick Edmunds, 97, died Tuesday, July 15, 2003 in Waynesboro, Virginia.
She was born April 23, 1906 in Nelson County, VA, a daughter of John T. Fitzpatrick and Carrie Weldon Butts Fitzpatrick. She was a graduate of Randolph-Macon, and held at Bachelor of Arts degree in English. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Waynesboro, the Waynesboro Garden Club, the Farmington Country Club of Charlottesville, and was a Paul Harris Fellow of the Waynesboro Rotary Club.
Her husband, Felix E. Edmunds, preceded her in death on Jan. 14, 1990. Her brother, Walter Carrington Fitzpatrick, and her sister, Mabel Walter Putney, also preceded her in death.
She is survived by a nephew, Walter C. Putney, Jr. of Reno, NV.
A Graveside Service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Friday, July 18, at Riverview cemetery in Waynesboro by the Rev. William G. Wilson.
There will be no visitation or viewing.

Reba V. Gillooly
Cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and devoted wife, Reba V. Gillooly, 95, of Charlottesville, died of age related causes on Monday, July 14, 2003.
Born Reba V. Allison on September 17, 1907 in Alum Bank, Pa., her family later migrated to Temperance, Mi. She married
Thomas Lee Gillooly of Toledo, Ohio in 1935. Together they survived the depression, WWII and raised a son and three daughters in Sylvania, OH where Tom taught high school for 35 years. They retired to Charlottesville in 1979 where they acquired many treasured and devoted friends. Reba will be remembered as a loving and proud mother and grandmother. An avid gardener, Reba was known to coax a bloom from the most reluctant of plants. She was a member of Charlottesville’s First Presbyterian Church, 50+Club and the Senior Center. Reba was a spirited stock investor and a charter member of the Senior Center Investment Club #1. She was considered a spirited but prudent stock investor and "when Reba spoke, her friends listened."
Mrs. Gillooly was preceded in death by her devoted husband Thomas, and son, Thomas L. Gillooly, Jr. The eldest of eight Allison children (deceased brothers Merle, Keith & Blaine and sisters Ethyl and Sally), she is survived by her sisters Virginia Kaiser (of CA) and Pauline Dick (of Ohio) and sisters-in-law Genevieve & Helen Allison.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory three daughters & their families. Patricia Gillooly of Berkeley, CA, & her son Tod Heiles & wife Lainye) and daughter Katrina Heiles & husband Peter Gallin all of Vancouver, WA; daughter Linda Perriello of Charlottesville, and her husband Vito & children Elizabeth Rice & husband Kenneth of Baltimore Md., "Bo Perriello and wife Maureen of Morristown, NJ., Dr. Paige Perriello of Arlington, Va. and Thomas Perriello of Freetown, Sierra Leone; and Colleen Mohr of Eugene, OR and her husband James and sons Michael and USNA Midn Joseph P. Mohr. She is also survived by her precious great grandchildren; her namesake Allison Lloyd Rice, William Upton Rice, Vito A. Perriello, IV and Katherine Elizabeth Perriello.
A memorial service to celebrate her wonderful 95 years of life will be held at First Presbyterian Church on Park Street on Thursday July 17, 2003 at 1 p.m. with Dr. Thomas Kennedy officiating. Internment in Toledo, OH will be private. The family would like to thank her physicians Drs. Tatar, Campa, and Lowdon and the nursing staff on the 7th floor at Martha Jefferson Hospital for their wonderful care.

William Green Harlow, 67, native of Charlottesville, died Sunday, July 6, 2003.
Born August 9, 1935 to the late Carl Harlow and Ruby Harlow Craddock.
