Rozanne S. Smith

Rozanne Sheffield Smith, 60, formerly of Charlottesville, Va., passed away peacefully at her home in Merritt Island, Florida on Saturday, June 28, 2003. She was preceded in death by her father, W.T. (Teeny) Sheffield.

She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Charles, and their son, Stephen, his wife, Kimberly, and grandchildren, Christopher, Ashleigh and Mason Smith. She is also survived by her mother, Viola Sheffield Pugh; brothers, David and Michael Sheffield; and her sister, Winkie Coyne.

Rozanne was a homemaker and loved by all that knew her. She was a member of the 1st Christian Church of Merritt Island, Florida.

A memorial service will be held at the Cherry Avenue Christian Church in Charlottesville, Va., on July 17, 2003, at 6 p.m. with family visitation immediately following at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the American Cancer Society, Cherry Avenue Christian Church, or Weustoff Brevard Hospice, Merritt Island, Florida.

Edith S. White

Edith Sacre White, 71 of Charlottesville, died July 15, 2003, at The Cedars.

Born February 11, 1932 in Charlottesville, she was the daughter of the late Jack and Gertrude Gibson Sacre. Her husband, Russell White; a brother, Bobby Sacre and a sister, Ida Sacre Conley, also preceded her in death.

She was a member of the Faith Baptist Church.

Survivors include her children, Glenn White and friend, Doris Deane of Charlottesville; Steve White and his wife Barbara of Barboursville; James White and his wife Genevie of White Hall; Joyce White of Charlottesville; Larry White of Charlottesville; Linda Sampson and her husband Lloyd of Crozet; Ronald White and close friend Sandra Gibson of Orange; Cecil White and his wife Martie; Melvin White and his wife Peggy; Penny White all of Charlottesville; a sister, Charlotte Marshall and her husband Cecil; Sandra Thacker and her husband Buck; 17 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends this evening from 7 – 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 17, 2003 at Hill & Wood Chapel with Mr. Frank Forehand officiating. Interment icon will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens.

The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff at the Cedars Nursing Home and a special thanks to Glenda Mulligan, Laura Turner and their staff of CNA’s for the loving care and support shown during this difficult time.

Judy E. Beverly

Judy Elizabeth Beverly, 45, of Pines Lane, Shipman died Friday July 11, 2003 at her residence.

Born October 15, 1957 in Campbell Co. She was a daughter of the late Warren H. Shafer and Virginia Parnell Shafer. She was a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church of –Lovington.

She is survived by her husband David L. Beverly of Shipman; a son Roger D. Beverly of Shipman; a sister Carolyn S. Ottinger of Elon; a brother Paul Shafer and wife Laura of Evington; an aunt Norma Jean Beverly of Shipman and Uncle Carlton Beverly both of Lovingston, and a aunt Mabel Zimmerman of West Virginia and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held Monday July 14, 2003 at 2 p.m. at Ridgecrest Baptist Church with the Rev. David Swing officiating with Interment icon to follow in the Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7-6 p.m. at the funeral home and suggest that memorials take the form of contributions to Ridgecrest cemetery, 14654 Thomas Nelson Hwy. Lovingston, Va. 22949.

Iola T. Bobbitt

A service for Iola Taylor Bobbitt will be held at 3:00 p.m., today, at the Hill & Wood Chapel, the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment icon will take place 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 14th at Frederick Memorial Gardens in Gaffney, SC.

Hill & Wood is in charge of arrangements.

Mary L. Bradley

Mary Louise Bradley, 66, of Madison, died Thursday July 10, 2003 at her residence. Born March 1, 1937 in Mills River, North Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Bowls A. Allman and Bonnie Mae Woods Allman and wife of the late Waymond Bradley.

A graveside funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, July 13, 2003 at Madison Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today evening at Preddy Funeral Home in Madison.

Wendell G. Counsell

Wendell George Counsell, 79 of Charlottesville died Wednesday, July 9, 2003 at his residence.

Born December 24, 1923 in Osage, Iowa he was the son of the late Glendon Counsell and Pearl Gosselin Counsell. He was also preceded in death by a son, Rodney Counsell.

He was a printer by trade, a finish carpenter, and had retired from the University of Nebraska. He attended Oak Park Academy in Nevada, IA, served in the Army Medical Corps during WW II, was an active Boy Scout leader for many years, was a member of the Lions Club, and a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Charlottesville.

Mr. Counsell is survived by his wife, Helen H. Handley Counsell of Charlottesville; 5 daughters, Gweneth West of Charlottesville, Janelle Fenton Cofack of Salt Lake City, UT, Jolene Webb West of Ruckersville, Barbara Counsell Schulz of Garden Valley, ID, and Lori West Vernon of Slatington, PA; a brother, Charles Counsell of Chicago, IL; 2 sisters, Merle Spencer of Milton-Freewater, OR, and Clarice Nelson of Clear Lake, WI; 3 sons-in-law, John Vernon, Doug Fenton, and Brad Schulz; 20 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 13, 2003 at the Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Charlottesville, with the Rev. Ralph Rowley officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 1500 E. Rio Road, Charlottesville, VA 22901.

Arrangements are being handled by Hill and Wood Funeral Home.

Ethel C. Dollins

Ethel Lorene Colvin Dollins, 78, of Keswick, died Wednesday, July 09, 2003 at a local nursing home.

Born to the late Alec and Patsy Estes Colvin on September 8, 1924 in Orange County, VA. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Edward Cornelius Dollins and son, Samuel Dollins.

Mrs. Dollins is survived by her children, Irene Norvelle and her husband, Richard of Keswick, Va., and Pat Manley and her husband, Tom of Harrisonburg, Va.; four grandchildren, Kelly Manley of Athens, Ga., Sarah and Chris Norvelle of Keswick, and Samuel Dollins of Charlottesville; two great grandchildren, Sammy and Corey Dollins of Roanoke, Va.; and eight siblings, Florence Moyer of Richmond, Va., Edward Ladd, Jr. of West Va., George Ladd of Somerset, Va., Annie Carpenter of Gordonsville, Roy Ladd of Orange, Va., Lewis Ladd of Richmond, Va.; Douglas Ladd of Charlottesville, Va., and Betty Allen of Barboursville, Va.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 A.M at Grace Episcopal Church, Cismont, today, with the Rev. Bruce Hunter officiating. Interment icon will follow at the churchyard.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Trinity Mission Nursing Home.

Francis S. Ryalls

Funeral services for Francis Steele Ryalls will be held at Beaver Dam Baptist Church in Troy 3 p.m. on today, with the Rev. Chris Martin officiating. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. prior to the funeral service. Interment icon will follow at the church cemetery.

Dorothy E. Taylor

A memorial Service for Dorothy E. Taylor conducted by Pastor Wendell Lamb will be held 10 a.m., today at Ryan Funeral Chapel in Quinque, with interment in Holly Memorial Gardens.

Larry E. Witt

Larry E. Witt, 46, of Dillwyn, died Friday, July 11, 2003. Survivors include his wife, Kathy Witt; 4 children, Larry, Ronnie, Melissa and Jeremy Witt; 3 step-children, Tina, Dawn and Stacey; 1 brother, Timothy Witt; 3 sisters, Darlene Voorhees, Betty Sawyer and Patty Perutelli and 9 grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. today at Buckingham Community cemetery, Buckingham County.

Arrangements are by Thacker Brothers Funeral Home, Scottsville.

Iola T. Bobbitt

Iola Taylor Bobbitt, 86, of Charlottesville, died Wednesday, July 9, 2003 at Our Lady of Peace.

Born March 29, 1917 in Gaffney, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Lafayette and Lillian Service Taylor. She was also preceded in death by her husband of over 64 years, Thomas Fleming Bobbitt; two sisters; Montez Harmon and Ruby Taylor and a brother; Robert Taylor.

She is survived by her daughter; Sylvia Bobbitt Ardinger and her husband Frank of Lake Monticello, sons; Robert Fleming Bobbitt and his wife Paris of Flagstaff, Az, Joseph Michael Bobbitt of Hendersonville, NC and Kenneth Franklin Bobbitt of Leesburg, VA, two sisters; Ione Taylor of Columbus, GA and Janelle Taylor Sarratt of Gaffney, SC, a brother; Samuel Lafayette Taylor, Jr. also of Gaffney, SC, nephews; Samuel G. Harmon and his wife Linda of Columbus, GA, who will conduct the service in Gaffney, SC and Samuel Lafayette Taylor, II of Gaffney, SC, nine grandchildren; Kevin Fleming Ardinger, Franklin Keith Ardinger, Rebecca Bobbitt Marchbanks, Elizabeth Paris Bobbitt, Robert Fleming Bobbitt, Jr., Suzanne Michell Bobbitt, Kevin Michael Bobbitt, Joseph Michael Bobbitt, Jr., and Benjamin David Bobbitt and eleven great-grandchildren.

Iola was a champion speller in school and won many spelling bee awards. She worked for a lawyer and was a court stenographer in Gaffney, SC before meeting the love of her life Thomas Fleming Bobbitt and marrying him in Gaffney on May 29, 1937. They traveled while he worked for Roses Dime stores settling in Northern Virginia. After her children were born she became a full time mother and house wife; except for a brief time when she worked at the Pentagon as a secretary, she also worked for a lawyer in McLean, VA. She was mother to many children other than her own. Most special to her were the Johnston children. Her children and grandchildren were the light of her life. After living in Falls Church, VA for 31 years she and her husband moved back to Halifax, NC. In 1996 they moved to Lake Monticello, VA to be near their daughter and her husband. She was loved by and inspired love and devotion to family and friends. Iola was an avid sports fan. People delighted in her knowledge of the players, coaches and trivia that she knew about them.

The family especially wants to thank Our Lady of Peace for the loving care that so many gave her. She loved them so. .

A service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, July 12th at the Hill & Wood Chapel, the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment icon will take place 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 14th at Frederick Memorial Gardens in Gaffney, SC. Those friends who wish may send flowers or make a contribution to the Lake Monticello Rescue Fire and Rescue, 10 Slice Road, Palmyra, VA 22963.

Wendell G. Counsell

Wendell George Counsell, 79 of Charlottesville died Wednesday, July 9, 2003 at his residence.

KENNETH W. GRAVELY

Kenneth Wayne Gravely, 61, of Charlottesville, died July 10, 2003 at his residence.

He was born in Martinsville, April 19, 1942, son of the late Ben Franklin and Gracie Lee Richardson Gravely. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Ollie Bouldin and Kathryn Dowdy.

Kenneth was retired from the University of Virginia with 30 years of service as a Network Manager.

He is survived by his son, Brian Gravely and his wife Stacy of Winston Salem, NC., a brother, Dillard Gravely of Collinsville, three sisters, Margaret Knight of Martinsville, Edith Boladz of Dallas, TX., and Loraine Sundquist of Worchester, MA., three grandchildren, Brian Gravely, Jr., Ethan Gravely, and Acadia Gravely all of Winston Salem, NC. and a very special friend and former wife, Julia Oakley Gravely of Martinsville.

Funeral services will be private.

Mrs. George W. (Agnes) Higgins

Mrs. George W. (Agnes) Higgins died Tuesday, July 8, 2003. Born on May 10, 1912 in Aspen, Colorado. She was the daughter of Daniel William and Annie Chisholm, and the widow of the late George W. Higgins, Sr. She moved to Orange, Va. in 1931. She was a member of St. Isidore the Farmer Catholic Church.

Agnes is survived by her six children: Barbara McHale of Vienna, Va., Emma H. Day of Radcliffe, KY, George Higgins of Louisville, KY, Sue Neale of Scarsdale, NY; Kathryn Bergwall of Plantation, FL, and Daniel Higgins of Raleigh, NC. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Her funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. today, at St. Isidore the Farmer, 14414 St. Isidore Way, off of Route 15, approximately three miles south of Orange, Internment at Graham cemetery will follow the Mass.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Gordon House, 501 N. Main Street, Gordonsville, Va.
