Elizabeth M. Gibbes

Elizabeth "Betty" Cullen Miller Gibbes, 86, of Charlottesville, died Monday, July 7, 2003, in a local hospital.

Born April 15, 1917, in Hempstead, Long Island, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late William J. Miller and Sallie Reid Anderson Miller. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Daniel L. Gibbes; and a sister, Virginia Hansen.

She spent her childhood years in Richmond, Va., where she attended St. Catherine’s School. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Education from the University of South Carolina at Columbia in 1938. It was while there as a student that she met her husband. She taught private first grade at her home for over two decades. The school was known as Greenleaf Terrace School. For a period of 10 years she worked as a dental assistant for Dr. Trice Taylor. She was an active patron and avid supporter of the Jefferson Madison Regional Library and the Senior Center. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Charlottesville for many years.

Mrs. Gibbes leaves the following survivors to cherish her memory, a daughter, Catherine S. Gibbes, Ph.D., of Cambridge, Mass.; two sons, Dorsey C. Gibbes of Mystic, Conn., and Peter L. Gibbes, and his wife, Sylvia, of Richmond, Va.; a grandson, Daniel C. Gibbes; a step-grandson, Jeremy Lawrence; a niece, Virginia Bruce Hansen of Charlottesville; a nephew, Victor Hansen of Atlanta, Ga.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today, in the St. Johns Chapel cemetery, Green Springs, with Mr. Larry Macomber officiating.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Jefferson Madison Regional Library, 201 E. Market Street, Charlottesville, Va. 22902, or the American Heart Association, 3025 Berkmar Drive, Charlottesville, Va. 22901.

Donald Lee Grim

Donald Lee Grim, 94, of Charlottesville, died Tuesday, July 8, 2003, in a local nursing home.

Born March 29, 1909 in Queens, WV, he was the son of the late Alvin and Viola Cutright Grim. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Wilda Grim Collins and Hilda Grim Cutright.

He was a veteran of World War II serving in the army as a medic with the General Hospital. He was a carpenter by trade and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He was a fan of baseball. Hitting a homerun at age 75, off a former professional pitcher, Bud Thomas, was one of his favorite memories.

In his later years he enjoyed walking his pug Butch through his neighborhood and stopping to talk with his neighbors.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Maude H. Grim; a daughter, Nancy Grim; nieces, Glenna Combs, Faye Parr and June Birckhead; and their children and grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday at Teague Chapel with Reverend Norman Johnson officiating. Interment icon will follow in Holly Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today, at Teague Funeral Home.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Trinity United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 37, North Garden, VA 22959, or your favorite charity.

Buchanan "Buck" Hummel

Buchanan "Buck" Hummel, 79, of Charlottesville, formerly of Harrisonburg passed away July 8, 2003.

Buck was born November 8, 1923 and was a son of the late Virgil and Annie Mnnick Hummel.

Mr. Hummel retired as a manager from Grassy Knoll Hatchery in Bybee, Va. and was an avid Baseball fan who loved the Atlanta Braves.

On July 28, 1951 he married Dawn M. Long who preceded him in death.

Surviving are two sons, Chester Hummel of Gordonsville, and Scott Hummel of Charlottesville, two daughters, Judy Huffman of Harrisonburg and Patti Cobb of Charlottesville, and Seven grand children. A son, Gregory Hummel, preceded him in death.

A memorial service will be held at the Johnson Funeral Service Chapel in Bridgewater on July 12, 2003 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Richard Clore officiating.

The family will receive friends after the memorial service at the home Vernon and Judy Huffman, 4538 Pleasant Valley Road, Harrisonburg.

J. Wilson Newman

J. Wilson Newman, 93, former Chief Executive Officer of the Dun & Bradstreet Corporation for sixteen years and Chairman of the Finance Committee for twelve years, died in Charlottesville, Va. on Tuesday.

Mr. Newman resided in Short Hills, New Jersey, Delray Beach, in 1909, Florida, and Charlottesville, Va. he was born in Clemson, South Carolina, attended Clemson University, graduated in 1931, and received his law degree from New York University Law School in 1937. Following a brief experience is banking, Mr. Newman joined the R.G. Dun Company in 1931 as a credit reporter shortly before that company’s merger with the Bradstreet company. After several years of reporting and a wide range of assignments, he became a Vice President in 1946, President in 1952, and Chairman and Chief Executive Officer in 1960. After retiring in 1968, he remained Chairman of the Finance Committee until 1980. Under his leadership, his company substantially expanded its revenues through growth and diversification of services, as well as modernizing systems and facilities.

Mr. Newman participated in numerous governmental activities including being a member of the United States Price Commission (‘71-72) and the Commission on Bankruptcy Laws (‘70-73). He was a member of the Millburn, New Jersey Board of Education, associated in various capacities with the American Bar Association, the Committee for Economic Development, the Conference Board, the New York Chamber of Commerce Executive Committee, as well as the English Speaking Union in Charlottesville, Va. Numerous Board memberships included: The Atlantic Companies, Chemical Bank, Consolidated Edison, International Paper, AT&T, General Foods Corporation, Lockheed Corporation, and the New York Stock Exchange.

Public service activities included the Clemson University Foundation, New York University and its law School foundation, the Miller Center of public of Public Affairs at the University of Va. (Chairman), Sweet Briar College (Chairman), The Brookings Institute, Harvard University, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and the Presidents Council for the Arts, University of Va. Mr. Newman has been specifically honored by Clemson University, the New York University Law School, the South Carolina Business Hall of Fame, Sweet Briar College, and the Miller Center of Public Affairs. He also wrote and published an autobiography entitled "For What Do We Labor? In 1996. He was past president of the University Club of New York and a trustee of the Baltusrol Golf Club and the Gulf Stream Bath and Tennis Club.

Mr. Newman was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Clara Collier Cox Newman. He is survived by four children, Mrs. Robert E. Blanchard of Green Village, New Jersey, Mrs. Bradley R. Thayer of Whitefield, New Hampshire, James Wilson Newman Jr. of Charlottesville, Va. and Charles Carter Newman of Bryn Mawr Pennsylvania; nine grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be private.

Robert A. Pulcini

Judge Robert Anthony Pulcini, of Earlysville, Va., died suddenly on Tuesday, July 8, 2003, while on judicial assignment in Austin, TX. At the time of his death, Judge Pulcini was an Administrative Law Judge for the National Labor Relations Board.

Born in Boston, MA, on September 9, 1945, he was the son of Italian immigrants, Salvatore and Maria (Albani) Pulcini. He graduated from Boston College High School and received his B.A. and J.D. Degrees from Suffolk University. Answering his country’s call, he interrupted his legal education for service in the U.S. Army as a combat infantryman in Vietnam (1969-1971).

Following his honorable discharge, Judge Pulicini began a long and fruitful career in government service, focusing on labor relations and administrative law. At the National Labor Relations Board, he rose through the ranks from Field Examiner to Trial Attorney. In 1988, he was appointed a United States Administrate Law Judge for the Social security Administration, later becoming Chief Hearing Office Administrative Law Judge in Houston, TX, and New Haven, CT.

In 2000, Judge Pulicini was delighted to return to the National Labor Relations Board, serving as an Administrative Law Judge for the Board until his untimely death. Judge Pulcini possessed a unique combination of boundless zest for the intellectual complexities of administrative law and genuine empathy and deep compassion for the needs and desires of the people whose cases he was called upon to resolve.

By heritage and inclination, Judge Pulicini was deeply committed to the joys of his family life. His dear wife, Kristi, survives him. He is also survived by, and was particularly proud of, his four children Robert and wife Yovanny of Houston, TX, Jonathan and wife Laura of Austin, TX, and Stephen and Maria of Earlysville, Va. He took great pleasure in his two granddaughters, Gabriella and Isabella, and is also survived by many family members and friends residing throughout the country.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday, July 15, at 12 noon at Found and Sons Chapel. Interment icon will follow in Culpeper National cemetery, with honor provided by the Culpeper American Legion Post #330 and the Culpeper V.F.W. Post #2524.

In addition, a memorial service for friends and family in the Boston area will be planned for September at the Alexander Thomas Funeral Home located at 22 Oak Street, Hyde Park, MA.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Charlottesville-Albemarle Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal, P.O. Box 7047, Charlottesville, Va. 22906.

Noble G. Ray

Noble Grant Ray, 80, of Charlottesville, died Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at a local hospital.

Born June 1, 1923, in Virginia, he was the son of the late Marshall and Minnie Barnett Ray. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mildred J. Ray; sisters, Elizabeth R. Graves, Frances R. Belew and Gladys R. Hall; brothers, Sam, Jack Harold and Curtis Ray.

Survivors include a brother, Courtland Ray of Fredericksburg; sister-in-law, Nellie Ray of North Garden and a host of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends this evening from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 11, 2003, at Hill & Wood Chapel with the Rev. Ed Leake officiating. Interment icon will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens.

The family would like to express their appreciation to his caregiver, Lewis Lilly and his late wife, Shelby, and all others who provided loving care and support.

Viola R. Rhodes

Viola Ruth Rhodes, 99, of Charlottesville, died July 8, 2003 at the Colonnades.

Born June 22, 1904 in Brooklyn, New York she was the daughter of the late Peter and Olga Jensen Miller. Her husband, Harold A. Rhodes, also preceded her in death.

She was a former member of St. Gerald Majella Roman Catholic Church in Hollis Long Island, and a member of Church of the Incarnation.

Survivors include a daughter, Loretta Reilly of Charlottesville; 3 grandchildren, Patricia R. McGraw, Kevin M. Reilly and Kathy R. Shupe; great grandchildren, Aaron Reilly, Shannon Reilly, Katie McGraw, Mac McGraw and Casey Shupe all of Charlottesville; a sister, Frances Frank of Bethpage, New York.

A graveside service will be private in Long Island, New York.

Francis S. Ryalls

Francis Steele Ryalls, 70, of Harrisonburg, passed away, at his home on Wednesday, July 9, 2003, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born June 16, 1933 in Troy, Va. Son of the late James Russell Ryalls and Clarice Merle Payne Ryalls. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Russell Calvin Ryalls and Clinton S. Ryalls.

Survived by his wife of 49 years, Dorothy Beverly Ryalls of Harrisonburg; two daughters, Pamela R. Charlton of Waynesboro, Penny R. Green and her husband, Donnie of Harrisonburg; one grandson, Derek L. Trumbo of Harrisonburg; one sister, Patricia Jane Cunningham and husband Paul of Mcdowell, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Steel was a past member of the Valley Saddle Club and retired from ShenValley Drywall and Nielson Construction Company in Rockingham County, and also was a member of the Beaver Dam Baptist Church. He was well known for his acoustical ceilings in the Rockingham and Harrisonburg area.

Funeral service will be held at Beaver Dam Baptist Church in Troy 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 12, 2003 with the Rev. Chris Martin officiating. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. prior to the funeral service. Interment icon will follow at the church cemetery.

Family will receive friends on Friday July 11, 2003 from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Pine Grove Church of the Brethren, 7876 Simmers Valley Road, Harrisonburg, VA 22802.

Thomas E. Terrell Jr.

Funeral services for Thomas Edward Terrell Jr., will be held at 11 a.m. today, at First Baptist Church, with Dr. Bruce A. Beard officiating. Interment icon will follow at Oakwood cemetery.

His Remains will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the services. The family will receive friends at the home of Mrs. Thelma T. Hagen at 820 Anderson Street.

Lindsey E. Thacker

Lindsey Edward Thacker, 62, of Orange, died Saturday, July 5, 2003, at Culpeper Regional Hospital.

Born April 2, 1941, in Charlottesville, he was the son of the late Lindsey Gordon Thacker and the late Pearl Richards Thacker.

Mr. Thacker was a member of Zion Baptist Church and retired from Specialty Weaver Inc., of Orange.

He is survived by his wife, Ada Blankenship Thacker of Orange; one daughter, Theresa Ann Thacker of Louisa; two sons, Jeffrey Edward Thacker and Jamie Penton and his wife, Kay; one brother, Gordon Eugene Thacker and his wife, Sharon; one sister, Ada Thacker Sisk and her husband, Raymond; one grandchild, Ashley Ann Thacker, all of Orange; and a number of nieces, great-nieces, nephews, great-nephews and his dog, Boo.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today, at the Preddy Funeral Chapel with interment in the Thacker Family cemetery, Route 629, Orange.

The family received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home.

Hedwig Esterbauer

Hedwig Esterbauer, 95, nee Leger, died peacefully Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at Morningside Assisted Living.

The oldest of four, she was born March 5, 1908, in Gries, Germany. She met and married Anton Esterbauer in New York in 1939, 10 years after immigrating to America. Childless, she and Tony brought several family members to America. Tony died in 1976, and she continued the generous hospitality they had always shown family and friends.

In 1996, to be closer to her only surviving sibling, Hilde Brinks, she moved to Charlottesville, Va. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

There will be no services in Charlottesville.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 490 Westfield Rd., Charlottesville, Va. 22902.

Interment will take place in Glendale, N.Y.
