Elizabeth M. Gibbes
Elizabeth "Betty" Cullen Miller Gibbes, 86, of Charlottesville, died Monday, July 7, 2003, in a local hospital.
Born April 15, 1917, in Hempstead, Long Island, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late William J. Miller and Sallie Reid Anderson Miller. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Daniel L. Gibbes; and a sister, Virginia Hansen.
She spent her childhood years in Richmond, Va., where she attended St. Catherine’s School. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Education from the University of South Carolina at Columbia in 1938. It was while there as a student that she met her husband. She taught private first grade at her home for over two decades. The school was known as Greenleaf Terrace School. For a period of 10 years she worked as a dental assistant for Dr. Trice Taylor. She was an active patron and avid supporter of the Jefferson Madison Regional Library and the Senior Center. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Charlottesville for many years.
Mrs. Gibbes leaves the following survivors to cherish her memory, a daughter, Catherine S. Gibbes, Ph.D., of Cambridge, Mass.; two sons, Dorsey C. Gibbes of Mystic, Conn., and Peter L. Gibbes, and his wife, Sylvia, of Richmond, Va.; a grandson, Daniel C. Gibbes; a step-grandson, Jeremy Lawrence; a niece, Virginia Bruce Hansen of Charlottesville; a nephew, Victor Hansen of Atlanta, Ga.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 10, 2003, in the St. Johns Chapel cemetery, Green Springs, with Mr. Larry Macomber officiating.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Jefferson Madison Regional Library, 201 E. Market Street, Charlottesville, Va. 22902, or the American Heart Association, 3025 Berkmar Drive, Charlottesville, Va. 22901.

Donald Lee Grim
Donald Lee Grim, 94, of Charlottesville, died Tuesday, July 8, 2003, in a local nursing home.
Born March 29, 1909 in Queens, WV, he was the son of the late Alvin and Viola Cutright Grim. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Wilda Grim Collins and Hilda Grim Cutright.
He was a veteran of World War II serving in the army as a medic with the 7th General Hospital. He was a carpenter by trade and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He was a fan of baseball. Hitting a homerun at age 75, off a former professional pitcher, Bud Thomas, was one of his favorite memories.
In his later years he enjoyed walking his pug Butch through his neighborhood and stopping to talk with his neighbors.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Maude H. Grim; a daughter, Nancy Grim; nieces, Glenna Combs, Faye Parr and June Birckhead; and their children and grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday at Teague Chapel with Reverend Norman Johnson officiating. Interment
will follow in Holly Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Teague Funeral Home.

Bessie B. Kanney
Bessie Young Blackstock Kanney, 92, passed away Sunday, July 6, 2003, at a local nursing home.
She was born in Greenwood, Va., August 15, 1910, the daughter of Hannah Stuart Nicholson of Dundee, Scotland, and John Ed Young of Greenwood, Va.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Ralph Blackstock, and her second husband, G. C. Kanney; her sister, Mary Young Farrar; and five brothers, Russell, Curtis, Bill, George, and Arthur Young.
She is survived by her sister, Jane Young Rankin of Athens, Ga.; three nieces, Reba Farrar Woodward of Charlottesville, Connie Farrar Phillips of Forest, Va., and Betty Rankin Myrtle of Athens, Ga.; a number of nieces and nephews; and four stepchildren from her second marriage.
She graduated as a RN from Pennsylvania Woman’s Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa., in 1934. She and her husband, Ralph Blackstock, owned and operated The Afton Store for twenty five years and she managed the Old Afton Hotel and Blue Ridge Terrace Inn at Afton, Va. Bessie was a nurse in Philadelphia and returned to nurse at the University of Virginia Hospital where she worked on South Five for over thirteen years. She was a longtime member of Lebanon Presbyterian Church in Greenwood, Va.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today in the Emmanuel Episcopal Church cemetery, Rt. 250, Greenwood, Va., with the Rev. Michael Pleasants officiating.

J. Wilson Newman, 93, of Charlottesville, died Tuesday, July 8, 2003, with his family at his bedside.

Betty Ann Morris
Betty Ann Fisher Morris, 68, of 10 Squirrel Lane, died at 2:05 a.m. Thursday, July 3, 2003, in Kill Devil Hills, N.C.
She was born September 8, 1934, in Augusta County, the daughter of Jacob Milton and Annie Virginia Bailey Fisher.
She retired from Genicom after 40 years of service and was a member of Wayside Baptist Church in Crimora.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Buck and Mickey Fisher.
Survivors include three sons, Jeffrey Page Morris of Waynesboro, Rickey Alan Morris and his wife, Lynne, of Ruckersville, and Timmy Ray Morris of Staunton; one daughter, Sherry Monson and her husband, Edward of Utah; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Morris; one brother, Jack B. Fisher and his wife, Jean of Waynesboro; one sister, Elsie F. Hansen of Waynesboro; nine grandchildren, Katie Nielson and her husband, Casey, Skye Monson, Emily Morris, Taylor Morris, Sawyere Monson, Ethan Morris, Bryant Morris, Brooke Morris and Carter Morris; two nieces, Vicky Lowry and Brenda Booth; her special pet dog, Muffin; special friends of her bowling team, as well as her extended family members and friends of Wayside Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at the Wayside Baptist Church by Pastor Jerry Cline. Burial will follow in Augusta Memorial Park.
Active Pallbearers will be Bill Simons, Benny Trent, Jim Allen, Don Dedrick, Ray Noftz and Claude Diehl. Honorary pallbearers will be Larry Englebretson, Larry Martin, Wayne Coffey, Bobby Booth and Haliburton Baylor.

Noble G. Ray
Noble Grant Ray, 80, of Charlottesville, died Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at a local hospital.
Born June 1, 1923, in Virginia, he was the son of the late Marshall and Minnie Barnett Ray. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mildred J. Ray; sisters, Elizabeth R. Graves, Frances R. Belew and Gladys R. Hall; brothers, Sam, Jack Harold and Curtis Ray.
Survivors include a brother, Courtland Ray of Fredericksburg; sister-in-law, Nellie Ray of North Garden and a host of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 11, 2003, at Hill & Wood Chapel with the Rev. Ed Leake officiating. Interment
will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens.

Funeral services for Thomas Edward Terrell Jr., will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 10, 2003, at First Baptist Church, with Dr. Bruce A. Beard officiating. Interment
will follow at Oakwood cemetery.
His Remains will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the services. The family will receive friends at the home of Mrs. Thelma T. Hagen at 820 Anderson Street.

Lindsey E. Thacker
Lindsey Edward Thacker, 62, of Orange, died Saturday, July 5, 2003, at Culpeper Regional Hospital.
Born April 2, 1941, in Charlottesville, he was the son of the late Lindsey Gordon Thacker and the late Pearl Richards Thacker.
Mr. Thacker was a member of Zion Baptist Church and retired from Specialty Weaver Inc., of Orange.
He is survived by his wife, Ada Blankenship Thacker of Orange; one daughter, Theresa Ann Thacker of Louisa; two sons, Jeffrey Edward Thacker and Jamie Penton and his wife, Kay; one brother, Gordon Eugene Thacker and his wife, Sharon; one sister, Ada Thacker Sisk and her husband, Raymond; one grandchild, Ashley Ann Thacker, all of Orange; and a number of nieces, great-nieces, nephews, great-nephews and his dog, Boo.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 10, 2003, at the Preddy Funeral Chapel with interment in the Thacker Family cemetery, Route 629, Orange.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home.
Russell L. Woodward
Russell Lee Woodward, 70, of Wolftown, died Monday, July 7, 2003, at his residence.
He was born August 29, 1932, in Madison County and was the son of the late Lloyd Albert Woodward and Flossie Hurt Woodward.
Mr. Woodward was a retired carpenter for R.D. Wade Builders in Charlottesville and was a member of the Madison American Legion Post #157. He was a Korean Citation veteran in the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his wife, Alice D. Woodward of Wolftown; a daughter, Jean Romine and her husband, Donald of Haywood; a son, Derek Russell Woodward and his wife, Lakisha of Middle River, Greene County; seven brothers, Floyd Woodward of Bedford, Claude Woodward of Madison, William Woodward of Wolftown, Clemon Woodward of Etlan, Ross Woodward of Madison, Reuben Woodward, and Leroy Woodward, both of Madison; two sisters, Betty Shifflett of Charlottesville and Thelma Moubray of Wolftown; two grandchildren, Amy West of Front Royal and Myles Romine of Haywood, and 5 great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Waymond Woodward.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Preddy Funeral Home Chapel, Madison, with interment in Holly Memorial Gardens in Charlottesville. Pastor Josh Shifflet will officiate.

Jeremiah L. Deane
Jeremiah Leake Deane, 81, of Ruckersville, died Sunday, July 6, 2003, at his home with his family by his side.
He was born December 8, 1921, to the late Derilas Sanford and Lois Weaver Deane. He was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 59 years, Pearle Emerline, and by three sisters, Eunice Deane, Azilee Estes and Sarah Vesta Deane.
He worked on the family dairy farm for many years and later worked for Sears in the installation and automotive departments, retiring in 1984. He was a charter member of the Ruckersville Fire Company and a member of Spring Hill Baptist Church. He was a quiet, honest, hard- working, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, with a kind, generous heart. When he smiled, it lit up his whole face.
He is survived by two daughters, Diane Janet Hartling and her husband, Fred, and Janice Emily Lamb and her husband, Johnny; two brothers, Derilas Sanford Deane, Jr., of Louisville, Ky., and Carson Churchill Deane of McLean, Va.; two granddaughters, Michelle Lynn Twyman and her husband, Edwin, and Bridget Elaine Morris and her husband, Jason; a step-grandson, Michael Hartling and his wife, Dana; three great-grandchildren, Damian Pritchett and Brianna and Gary Morris; and two step-great-grandchildren, Derrick and Trevis Shifflett.
The family expresses special thanks to Hospice of the Piedmont and caregivers, Linda Sprouse and Shirley Scott for their compassionate care.
The family will receive friends at Ryan Funeral Home, Quinque, Va., today from 6 to 8 p.m.
