Alice J. Thompson

Alice Jones Thompson, 83, died peacefully the evening of Wednesday, July 2, 2003, at the Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital.

Born January 16, 1920, in Beeville, Texas, she was the daughter of the late Gertrude Russell and Allen Carter Jones, III. Although she lived in Virginia for most of her adult life, she remained a staunch Texan.

She graduated from Mary Baldwin College in 1940, and attended what is now called The Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond, Va. By marrying William McIlwaine Thompson in 1942, she fulfilled her ambition of being a Presbyterian minister’s wife. She maintained close ties with Hampden-Sydney College Church where her husband served as the minister from 1949 until 1951.

Dr. Thompson, subsequently the first Professor of Christian Ethics at Union Theological Seminary, died in 1952. With her two children, William McIlwaine Thompson Jr., and Alice "Lisa" Thompson Cross, she continued to reside in Richmond until moving to Westminster-Canterbury at Virginia Beach in 1982. She made frequent visits back to Texas, with the last occurring two weeks before her death.

She lived a life of Christian faith and service. She served on the boards of Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Ala., and the Richmond YWCA. She helped fund the first modern dental clinic in Kinshasa, Congo.

Committed to racial harmony, she was especially active during the civil rights movement in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s. When Chandler Junior High School was integrated, the first Richmond public school to do so, Alice Thompson had a picnic at her home for the two entering African-American students so they could meet some of their white peers before classes started. She was the Den Leader for the first integrated Cub Scout den in Richmond and was responsible for integrating Richmond’s United Church Women organization.

Whether serving as PTA President of John Marshall High School, President of Ginter Park Presbyterian Church’s Women of the Church, Sunday School teacher, Chairwoman of the Wednesday night suppers, Girl Scout Leader, a member of the Presbytery’s Home Mission Committee, or Westminster-Canterbury Hall Representative, Alice Thompson brought humor, wisdom, and her own unique South Texas hospitable style to each group.

Her greatest contribution was the gift of love given through her time, energy, wisdom, resources, humor, friendship, and counsel to all she met. Her thoughtfulness and ability to anticipate the needs of others endeared her to many. She radiated love, laughter, and life. There are many who claimed her as mother, grandmother, aunt, confidante and best friend.

She is survived by her son and his wife, Elsie Wilson Thompson, of Charlottesville, Va., her daughter and her husband, Harry Lee Cross, III, of Suffolk, Va.; and seven grandchildren, Harry Lee Cross, IV, Joseph McIlwaine Cross, Alice Ritchie Cross, William McIlwaine Thompson, III, Alice Haven Thompson, Anne Claiborne Thompson, and Orme Wilson Thompson; her sister and brother-in-law, Jeanne Jones Hause and H. Burt Hause of Beeville, Texas; and many beloved nieces and nephews and their children. Her sister Louella Jones Borglum and her brother, William Whitby Jones, II, predeceased her.

A memorial service will be held today at 2 p.m. by The Rev. Allen Johnson and The Rev. Richard Keever in the Virginia Beach Westminster-Canterbury Holy Trinity Chapel with a reception to follow in the Bayview Room. A graveside service will be held Wednesday at noon in Forest Lawn cemetery in Richmond, Va.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts be made to the Alice Jones Thompson Scholarship Fund that supports Union Theological Seminary – Presbyterian School of Christian Education students engaged in missionary work. The address is UTS-PSCE, 3401 Brook Road, Richmond, VA 23227.
