EARLY LEE BISHOP

Early Lee Bishop, who knew Albemarle County so well he could have written books about it, died in Roanoke early Thursday morning, July 24, 2003.

As a boy he was drawn to history and to the stories of old men, black and white, about how life was when they were boys.

To the end of his own life at 85, Early could recall details about the county’s wagon roads, its old mills, even the history of its oldest trees.

He read nearly everything he could find about Thomas Jefferson.

He pored over The Daily Progress, down to the building permits.

Smart as Early was, as observant as he was, he was too shy to ever be interviewed or recorded.

He met his wife of 61 years, Adria Overstreet Bishop, in Keswick in 1941, when she was nursemaid to the sons of Anne and John McIntyre, owners of Bridlespur Farm. Early became farm manager there and tended its 335 acres of fields, streams and livestock for nearly four decades. Early and Adria lived in a white house on Bridlespurs secluded back acres, where they raised, served up and gave away the tangiest tomatoes and sweetest corn and witnessed such spectacles as the aurora borealis and Hurricane Hazel. Early loved bringing lambs and calves into the world and watching storms blow across the Southwest Mountains.

He admired the intelligence of his dogs, especially his female hound Sam, named for Sam Ketcham in the Dick Tracy comics.

He marveled at the ingenuity of nature at every level.

He sensed the holiness in every day. Early was president of the Cismont School PTA and the Rivanna Community Center at Keswick, and clerk of the session at South Plains Presbyterian Church.

He was a friend to poor people, rich people and the few Keswick people who fell between.

He and Adria moved into Charlottesville and until emphysema forced him to retire at 81, he rambled his beloved back roads, advising farmers and gardeners for H.M. Gleason and Co., the farm supply where he had bought his fertilizer and alfalfa seed all his life. He served as an elder at Charlottesville’s First Presbyterian Church, where his encyclopedic knowledge of the Bible and his ability to apply its ancient lessons to today made him a favorite Men’s Bible Class teacher. He was a past president of the Albemarle Ruritan Club. He was a student of current events.

He always voted Democrat. Last fall, he and Adria moved to Roanoke to be near their daughter, Mary Carter Bishop, and her husband, Dan Crawford. Early joined Raleigh Court Presbyterian and bonded instantly with his new pastor, the Rev. F. Tupper Garden.

Early is survived by Adria, Mary Carter and Dan; his almost-sons, John S. (Buddy) McIntyre Jr. of Ridgeland, Miss., and James Byrd McIntyre of Richmond; a sister-in-law, Emma Bishop of Rome, Ga.; nephews James A. Bishop Jr. and his wife, Cile, of Rome, Ga., and Harry Bishop of Shawboro, N.C.; nieces Jean Garrett and her husband, Frank, of Palm Coast, Fla., Marjorie Allison of Louisa and Charlotte Mason of Virginia Beach; and many fine cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews.
