Pearl D. Johnson

Pearl Direatha Johnson Bryant, "MaPearl", 93, of Charlottesville, Virginia went to the Lord and Savior Friday, July 18, 2003 at the Cedars Nursing Home.

Pearl was born July 6, 1910 in Albemarle County.

She was the daughter of the late Edgar and Annie Sellars Johnson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Bryant; three sisters Ruth Bowling, Flossy Johnson, and Edna Johnson; two brothers, Russell Thomas and Curry Oscar Johnson; two daughters, Annie Bryant and Pearl Spears; three sons, Charles Bryant Sr., John Bryant and Gerald Bryant; three grandchildren, Barbara Tyree, Randy Bryant, and Thomas Bryant Jr.
She was a homemaker and a member of Chestnut Grove Baptist Church.

She leaves to cherish in her memory, two sons, Harry Bryant Sr. and his wife Margaret and Thomas Bryant of Charlottesville; seventeen grandchildren, thirty-five great grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren; two nieces, Della J. Younger and Odeila Wells and husband, Lawrence of Charlottesville; three sister-in-laws, Julia Preston, Rachel Walker and Florence Bryant of Charlottesville; one son-in-law, James Spears of Fluvanna; and a host of other beloved relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday, July 22, 2003 at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church, Old Lynchburg Road, Charlottesville, with Rev. Dr. R. A. Johnson officiating.

Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Her remains will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service.

The family will receive friends this evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the J. F. Bell Funeral Home Chapel.

The family would like to thank Cedars Nursing staff. A special thanks to Mary Ann Armstrong, Debbie Cooper, Clara Frazier, Janice Felton and Clara Booker at Cedars.

Walter M. Collins

Walter McKinley Collins, 86, of North Garden, died Sunday, July 20, 2003 at the home of his granddaughter.

Born March 4, 1917, he was the son of the late Thomas Collins and Susan Minnie Bowman Collins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Ethel Alma Inscore Collins; one sister, Betty Lou Thomas; one brother, Harry Collins; and one granddaughter, Judy Collins.

Mr. Collins owned and operated Collins Supermarket in North Garden from 1958 – 1982.

He was a member of Hardware Baptist Church and a past member of the Gideons.

He is survived by four daughters, Yvonne Shaver and husband, Charles; Nadine Dudley and husband Arnold; Sue Dudley and husband, Robert; and Vickie Dolan and husband, Robert; one son, Gray Collins and wife, Sylvia; five sisters, Shirley Bowman, Jean Scott, Irene Bowman, Alpha Collins, and Georgia Puckett; two brothers, Clifford Collins and Thurman Collins; fourteen grandchildren, including a special granddaughter, Michelle Dudley, Bradley Shaver, Pamela Haney, Christopher Shaver, Megan Dudley, Robbie Dudley, Jonathan Dudley, Lisa Shifflett, Glenn Dudley, Shawn Dudley, Ronnie Collins, Keith Collins, Angela Dolan, and Bobby Dolan; twenty great-grandchildren, including a special great-grandson, Trevor Jones; and one great-great-grandchild.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 23, 2003 at Teague Chapel with Mr. Jackie Houchens officiating.

Family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, 2003 at Teague Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hardware Baptist Church, 3452 Red Hill Road, Charlottesville, VA 22903.

Mary M. Douglas

Funeral services for Mary Madeline Douglas will be held at 2 p.m. today, at Union Baptist Church in Gordonsville with interment to follow in St. Johns Baptist Church cemetery.

Pastor James T. Jackson will officiate.

Preddy Funeral Home of Gordonsville is in charge of arrangements.

Annie P. Greer

Annie Parrish Greer, 88, of Palmyra died July 19, 2003 in Winterhaven Assisted Living in Charlottesville.

She was born November 13, 1914 in Fluvanna County, daughter of the late William James and Bettie Norcross Parrish.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Francis Greer and a grandson, Charles Martin Greer.

Mrs. Greer was a faithful member of Cunningham United Methodist Church.

She is survived by one son, Charles H. Greer and wife, Peggy; one daughter, Judith G. Southworth and husband, Henry; one brother, Wendell Parrish; two sisters, Katherine Gianniny and Elizabeth Wills; four grandchildren, Adam Greer, Kimberly Benedict, Laurie Thompson and Andrea Southworth-Weiss; and five great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 22 at the Cunningham United Methodist Church with interment to follow in the church cemetery.

The Rev. Emerson Shelton and Rev. Frank Schumaker will officiate.

The remains will lie in state at the church one hour before the service.

Family will receive friends at the church following the service.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Lake Monticello Rescue Squad.

The family would like to give special thanks to the staffs of Winterhaven Assisted Living and Hospice of the Piedmont for the care shown to Mrs. Greer.

Pauline E. Kinzie

A memorial service for Pauline Elizabeth Garst Kinzie will be held in celebration of her life in the chapel of the Bridgewater Retirement Community in Bridgewater, Va. on Sunday, July 27, 2003 at 3 p.m.

The family will welcome friends in the chapel following the service.

Arrangements are being handled by Hill and Wood Funeral Home is Charlottesville, Va.

Alvin M. Knighton

Funeral services for Alvin Morris Knighton will be held 2 p.m. today, at Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Orange conducted by Rev. Nancy Stanton McDaniel.

JUANITA I. McGEE

A graveside funeral service for Juanita (Dolly) McGee will be held on Tuesday, July 22, 2003 at 1 PM in the National Memorial Park cemetery in Falls Church, with the Reverend Don Carlton officiating.

Hill & Wood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Norman J. McCowin

Deacon Norman James McCowin, 86, of Columbia went to be with the Lord Friday, July 18, 2003 at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital, Richmond.

Born February 22, 1916, he was the son of the late Walter and Rachel McCowin and the beloved husband of Rose Bud McCowin.

He was educated in the Goochland County Public Schools.

Deacon McCowin accepted Christ and joined the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church where he was Chairman of the Deacon Board for thirty plus years and superintendent of the Sunday School for many years.

Besides his wife of sixty years, he leaves to cherish his memory six children, McKinley Key (Petronila), Norman McCowin, Jr. (Gloria), Avon McCowin, Phyllis Garrett (Jerry), Darnell Tilton (Allen), and Cheryl Boone; eighteen grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; one sister, Katie Jeffrey; two sisters-in-law, Agnes McCowin and Dorothy Bowles; one brother-in-law, Enoch Abrams; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 22, 2003 at 1 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Columbia.

Rev. Lloyd Feggans will officiate.

There will be viewing from 12-1 p.m. before service.

Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

Thomasson’s Funeral Services Inc. of Louisa, is in charge of all arrangements.

Emily C. McGee Reid

A graveside service for Emily Caroline McGee Reid will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 22 at the University cemetery.

Mrs. Reid's nephew, the Rev. John D. Spence III, will officiate.

Hill and Wood Funeral Home are in charge of arrangements.

Joseph O. Wingfield

Joseph Oscar Wingfield, 49, died July 19, 2003 in a Florence hospital.

He was born in Florence County, a son of the late Joseph Howard and Ollie Poston Wingfield.

He was a self-employed painter.

Surviving are: his wife, Angela Marie Shull Wingfield, of the home; two sons, Joseph (Dana) Wingfield and Richard "Ricky" Wingfield, both of Florence; three daughters, Angela (Matthew) Frazier, Charlottesville, Va., Crystal (James) Gatling, Florence and Patricia (Jason) Buie, Timmonsville; four brothers, Wayne Wingfield, Charlottesville, Va., Jerry (Wanda) Wingfield, Florence, S.C., Howard Wingfield and Lee (Denise) Wingfield, both of Charlottesville, Va.; two sisters, Rebecca Wingfield and Ruth Ann (David) Sullivan, Charlottesville, Va.; and five grandchildren, Christopher and Candice Gatliing, Jessie, Joseph and Gerald Wingfield.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at 3 o’clock in the Chapel of Layton-Anderson Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today, Monday from 6-8 p.m. and at other times at 929 Crestwood Drive, Florence, S.C.

Layton-Anderson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
