Leah Gross
GRETNA - Leah Closson Gross, 79, 1480 Hickeys Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 1997, at her residence after a brief illness.
Born Nov. 10, 1918, in Sedgwick, Maine, she was a daughter of the late Alton Closson and Maria Prever Closson.
She was an active member of the Eastern Star for 50 years in East Orland, Maine.
She has lived on Meadowwood Farm, Gretna, for the past 20 years.
She is survived by her husband, Basil A. Gross, to whom she was married
for 61 years on Oct. 4 of this year; a son, Dr. Alton Gross of Danville; a daughter, Nancy Upton of Java; a brother, Lauris Closson of Blue Hill, Maine; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
There will be no funeral service. The family will receive friends at the home of her son, Dr. Alton Gross, 135 Updike Place, Danville from 6 to 8 tonight.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Danville Cancer Association, 1225 W. Main St., Danville, Va. 24541.

Robert 'Bob' Hudson
VIRGILINA - Robert Spencer "Bob" Hudson, 83, 2131 Ramble Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 1997, at his residence.
Born Nov. 2, 1914, in Halifax County, he was the son of Eli F. Hudson and Susan Elizabeth Lloyd Hudson.
He was married
to Marie Stevens Hudson, who survives.
He was a retired farmer and a member of Grace Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of Virgilina, survivors include two sons, Donald L. Hudson of Appomattox and R. Eric Hudson of South Boston; two daughters, Joan Reynolds of Danville and Alison Robinette of Taylorsville, N.C.; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Grace Baptist Church by the Rev. Jack Stewart. Burial will be in the church cemetery located in Virgilina.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Brooks Funeral Home, South Boston, and other times at the residence.
Etta McCauley
Etta Vaughn Campbell McCauley, 84, 136 Princes Drive, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 6, 1913, in Danville, she was a daughter of George Vaughn and Clara Barksdale Vaughn.
She was married
to Edward McCauley, who predeceased her.
Survivors include a son, Apostle Lawrence Campbell of Danville; a stepson, Creston McCauley of Maryland; a sister, Lois Vaughn of Danville; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Bibleway Worldwide Church by Bishop Franklin Showell. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his son, Apostle Lawrence Campbell, 128 Larchmont Way.

James Wright
James B. Wright, 86, formerly of 222 Courtland St., Apt. 221, Holiday Village, died Wednesday morning, Dec. 24, 1997, at Veterans Care Center in Salem.
Born Oct. 23, 1911, in the Cascade community of Pittsylvania County, he was the son of John Wright and Mary Ann Harris Wright.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Air Force.
A resident of Cascade and Danville for most of his life, he retired in 1964 from Dan River, Inc.
He was a member of Church of God of Prophecy on Seminole Drive.
Survivors include a son, Ezra Milton Wright of Lilburn, Ga.; three daughters, Rebecca Ann Sheets of Danville, Janet Wright of Dover, Del., and Karen Fitzgerald of Jacksonville, Fla.; and 13 grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Jack Robertson.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his daughter, Rebecca Sheets, 9660 Mount Cross Road.

Noel Linwood Adams
JAVA - Noel Linwood Adams, 83, of 2204 Riceville Road, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 1997, in Stratford Health Care.
Born June 2, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Roskie Adams and Mae Moore Adams.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Carlton B. Adams, Wilmer Adams and John William Adams.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Riceville, an Army veteran of World War II and a retired farmer.
He was married
to Louise Thompson Adams.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a brother, Elwood Adams of Danville; a sister, Louise A. Greenwood of Danville; and a foster sister, Rita Allen of Danville.
Graveside services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at the Reynolds Family cemetery by the Rev. Shelton Miles.
The family will receive friends at the residence 2204 Riceville Road in Java.

The Rev. Carl Wesley Grubbs
The Rev. Carl Wesley Grubbs, 80, of Danville, died Monday, Dec. 22, 1997, at Lynchburg General Hospital. He is the husband of Shirley Franklin Grubbs.
Born in Brandy Station, Va., July 26, 1917, he was the son of the late reverend William Holcomb Grubbs and Edna Grubbs. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Roy Grubbs and Paul Grubbs, and two sisters, Pearl Harvey and Willie G. Trent.
The Rev. Grubbs received his BA from Lynchburg College in 1948 and was a graduate of Emory University Seminary. He was a retired minister in the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church and served many churches in the Lynchburg, Ashland, Rappahannock, Danville, Eastern Shore and Charlottesville districts. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a survivor of Pearl Harbor. In April of this year, the Rev. Grubbs received a copyright for his original work, "Pythagoras Folly, " which stands as a major contribution to geometric science. It is a 52-year study and solution to the trisection of an angle with straightedge and compass; a solution that has puzzled mathematicians for more than 3, 000 years. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, was Past patron of Amherst Chapter #115, Order of the Eastern Star and Past patron and member of Kaufman Chapter #87, Order of the Eastern Star, Danville.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Betty G. Hancock and her husband, Jerry of Rustburg, and Helen "Rie" Watts of Dallas, Texas; one sister, Elsie G. Mays of Lynchburg; two grandchildren, S. Dwaine Ware of Lynchburg and Karen Marie Ware of Amherst.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday from Court Street United Methodist Church, Lynchburg, by the Rev. Randolph Riley, the Rev. Donald Wilson, the Rev. Rudy Smith, the Rev. Wesley Astin, the Rev. Wayne Lanham and Dr. Willy N. Heggoy.
The family will receive friends at court Street United Methodist Church after the service.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to any of the churches he served.

Capitola Moser Shelton
JAVA - Capitola Moser Shelton, 76, of 1669 Java Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Shelton was born Dec. 25, 1920, in Mount Airy, N.C. She was the daughter of Robert Moser and Illa Brown Moser.
She was a member of the Church of God Prophecy of Gretna.
Shelton was preceded in death by her husband, Matthew Hall Shelton.
She is survived by a son, Franklin H. Shelton of Java; four brothers, Fitzhugh Moser of South Boston, Roland Moser and Roger Moser, both of Danville, and Leonard Moser of Java; a sister, Ruby M. Perkins of Salem; two granddaughters, Brenda Hedrick, Pamela Adams and Melody Bushley; a grandson, Rodney Shelton; and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held Saturday, at 11 a.m. at Scott Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Albert Moser will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Burial Park in Danville. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Scott Funeral Home, and at other times at Mrs. Shelton's Java residence.

TITUSVILLE, FLA. - Opal J. Ashworth, of Titusville, died Dec. 23, 1997, at Parrish Medical Center in Titusville.
Born in Danville, Va., this homemaker came to Brevard County in 1964.
She was a member of Park Avenue Baptist Church in Titusville, Fla.
Survivors include her husband, Howard Ashworth of Titusville; one daughter, Karen Clarke of Titusville; two sons, Keven Ashworth of Orlando and Keith Ashworth of Titusville; two sisters, Odessa Clifton and Ruby Harvey, both of Danville, Va.; two brothers, Raymond Jackson of Danville and Otis T. Jackson Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va.; and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. today at Park Avenue Baptist. Burial will be in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens in Titusville.
