Charles Farrar

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Charles Bidwell Farrar, one of the last liberal priests of 1960's vintage in the Episcopal Diocese of Southeast Florida, died Dec. 25, 1997. A social activist, he championed Affirmative Action, Women's Rights, Gay Rights, Death Penalty, Pro-Choice and Right to Die. He was a staunch integrationist and protester of the Viet Nam war. He flew the United Nations flag from his house much to the annoyance of his neighbors. He was against war - all war.

He was a graduate of Yale University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a sometime student of Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland. He taught English literature in Rollins College, Winter Park, Fla.; Christian Albrechts Universitat, Kiel, Germany; and Serrekunda Middle School, The Gambia, West Africa.

During World War II, he was an officer in the mine force and served aboard ship in the Pacific. During the Korean conflict, he returned to the mine force and served aboard ship in the Atlantic.

He attended the General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church where he was president of the student body. He served 13 congregations over a period of 36 years.

In 1961 he married Elizabeth Graves Burke. They have two daughters, both of Atlanta, Helen Elizabeth and Marion Margaret.

In the 1960's the Episcopal Diocese of Southeast Florida went all out against institutional racism. Mr. Farrar's congregation stood at the epicenter of the problem. Expatriate Haitians were coming to the Glades in great numbers. Many were Anglicans (Episcopalian). A spokesman for the Episcopal Executive Council, NYC, declared Farrar's congregation the first to attempt racial bonding while preserving ethnic identity and liturgical tradition "all under one roof."

By his own admission, Mr. Farrar failed. Thereafter he pursued a desultory ministry until taking early retirement.

A requiem mass will be celebrated at the church of the Guardian Angels, of which he was rector emeritus. The church is located at 1325 Cardinal Lane, Lantana, Fla. The service will be held on Monday, Dec. 29, at 6:30 p.m. followed by dinner in the parish hall.

In lieu of flowers, gifts of money may be made to the Farrar Family Development Center, a haven for pregnant teenagers and young children in the Glades. Checks c/o NOAH Inc., 601 Covenant Drive, Belle Glade, FL 33430. At a later time, Mr. Farrar's ashes will be scattered in the family graveyard in Yanceyville, N.C.
