Evangeline Newman
Evangeline Glidewell Newman, 82, of 240 Lady Astor Place, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 20, 1915, in Danville, she was the daughter of Edmond Thomas Glidewell and Arline Burton Glidewell.
In 1933, following graduation, she was a Miss Virginia and third runner up in the Miss America Pageant.
She was associated with L. Herman's Department Store and then Thalhimers in Danville for 35 years as a buyer for accessories and then assistant manager. In 1969, she advanced to Thalhimers in Winston-Salem, N.C. to become an accessories buyer for the North Carolina regional stores, a position she retained for 10 years before retiring in 1979.
While in Winston-Salem, she was an active member of Knollwood Baptist Church.
Upon returning to Danville in 1988, she returned to her former church, West Main Baptist, where she remained active. She was also a member of the Thalhimers' Retirees Club.
She was married
to James Hurdle Newman, who predeceased her in 1964.
Survivors include a daughter, Evangeline N. Avery, a brother, E.T. Glidewell Jr. and a sister, M. Jane Glidewell, all of Danville; a grandson, Steven Jeffrey Smith of Raleigh; a granddaughter, Angeline Avery Frazier of Richmond; and four great-grandchildren.
A service will be conducted a 2 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 29, at West Main Baptist Church by the Rev. Bruce Wilson. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends Sunday night from 7 to 9 p.m. at Townes Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Annie Albritton
Annie "Lucille" Albritton, 86, of 11533 Martinsville Highway, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 1997 in Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been in declining health for one year and had been a patient in the hospital since Dec. 22.
Born Oct. 2, 1911, in the Brosville community of Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Banner Montgomery and Mable Owen Montgomery.
On Dec. 25, 1949, she was married
to Thomas Gordon Albritton, who survives.
She was retired from Dan River Inc. She was a member of Emmanuel Friends Church in Eden, N.C.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Calvin B. Johnson. Interment
will follow at the Owen Family cemetery in Brosville. The family will receive friends at the residence.
Glenn Annas
Robert Glenn Annas, 90, of 3361 Horseshoe Road, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 1997, in Martinsville Memorial Hospital after eight years of declining health.
Born Aug. 27, 1907, in Caldwell County, N.C., he was a son of John Annas and Mary Beane Annas.
On April 19, 1953, he was married
to Cloice Wright Annas.
He lived in Charlotte, N.C., for 40 years prior to moving to Danville in 1994. He was retired from Hall Oil Company in Charlotte, where he worked as a salesman.
He was a member of Northside Baptist Church in Charlotte, where he had taught Sunday School for more than 15 years.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include four daughters, Patricia "Patti" A. Smith of Danville, Velma A. Townsend of Boyertown, Pa., Shirley A. Cline of Conover, N.C., and Shelba Jean A. Turner of Lenior, N.C.; two sons, M. Larry Annas of Hickory, N.C., and Hugh O. Annas of Lenior, N.C.; three brothers, Lindsey Annas of Phoenix, Ariz., Howard Annas of Lenior, N.C., and Lewis Annas of Hudson, N.C.; and 26 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, R.G. Annas Jr.; two daughters, Mary A. Stoerrle and Donna A. Howell; and eight brothers.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. Dr. Doug Barber and the Rev. Robert Vermillion. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Larry Ferguson
Larry G. Ferguson, 66, of 213 Ethel Ct., Westover Hills, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a two year decline in health.
Born Nov. 11, 1931, in the Cascade community of Pittsylvania County, he was a son of William R. Ferguson and Pearl Williams Ferguson.
He was married
to Amanda Hines Ferguson, who survives.
He was a graduate of Brosville High School. He served in the U.S. Navy. He worked in the maintenance department of Dan River Inc. for a number of years until his health failed. He attended Woodlawn Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, Barry L. Ferguson of Roanoke; a sister, Rebecca Ferguson Medford of Martinsville; and a brother, John Ferguson of Kannapolis, N.C. He was predeceased by three brothers.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday from the chapel of Swicegood Funeral Home by the Rev. William C. Blalock. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Virginia Foster
WILLIAMSBURG - Virginia Yeatts Foster, 58, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 1997, at home.
A native of Keeling, she was a Williamsburg area resident for 30 years. She was employed by various Peninsula businesses as an office manager, loan officer and secretary. She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Keeling.
preceded in death by her parents, Sam Scott and Ollie Emerson Yeatts, she is survived by her husband, Garry M. Foster; two daughters, Betty F. Croswell and her husband, Larry, and Valerie L. Miller and her husband, Shane, all of Williamsburg; a son, Harry L. Foster and his wife, Ella, of Minnesota; a brother, Perry Yeatts of Keeling; four grandchildren, one great-grandchild and numerous children of the York County Foster Care Program.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, at 229 Skimimo Road, Williamsburg. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, in the Weymouth Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Peninsula Memorial Park.
Lucille Griffin
Lucille Townes Griffin, 81, 204 Lansdale Drive, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 1997, at her residence.
Born May 27, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Willie T. and Francis Walton Holt.
She was married
to Major Griffin, who predeceased her.
She was a retired shift worker for Dan River Inc., and was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Willie Waller of Danville; and two sisters, Odaris Reynolds of Dry Fork and Sopronia Millner of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday from Oak Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Ralph B. Cypress. Interment
will follow in Crooktown cemetery.
The body may be viewed from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home. The family will be at the residence.
Raymond Jackson
Raymond Joseph Jackson, 76, of 83 Bishop Ave., died Saturday, Dec. 27, 1997, at his residence.
Born March 19, 1921, in Spartanburg, S.C., he was a son of Otis T. Jackson and Nannie Jackson, who are predeceased.
On Jan. 18, 1949, he was married
to Betsy G. Jackson, who survives.
Mr. Jackson was a graduate of Schoolfield High School. He worked for Dan River Inc. and retired in 1986. He was a veteran in the U.S. Army and served in World War II. He was honored with the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
Mr. Jackson was a member of Schoolfield Baptist Church and a member of the Bray Bible Class. He was a member of the American Legion Post 325 and the VFW Post 647. He was a member of Glenn Oak Country Club.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by three sons, Ray E. Jackson of Rocky Mount, N.C.; Robert E. Jackson and Benjamin O. Jackson, both of Danville; two sisters, Odessa J. Clifton and Ruby J. Harvey, both of Danville; a brother, O.T. Jackson Jr. of Virginia Beach; and four grandchildren, Benjamin Jackson, Cody Jackson, Rachel Jackson and Sarah Elizabeth Jackson.
He was predeceased by a grandson, Ray Jackson; two brothers, Carl Jackson and Robert Jackson; and a sister, Opal Ashworth.
Graveside services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997, at Highland Burial Park. The Rev. David Turbyville and Dr. John LaRue will be conducting the services.
The family will receive friends Monday, Dec. 29, 1997, 7 to 8 p.m., at Townes Funeral Home. Other times the family will be at the residence.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew or the Schoolfield Baptist Church Building Fund.
Stella Janowski
CHATHAM - Stella Helen Czerwinski Janowski, 73, of 184 Lester Drive, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 1997, at her residence.
Born July 24, 1924, in Newark, N.J., she was the daughter of Ignacio Czervinski and Stella Kowalczyk Czervinski.
She was married
to George J. Janowski, who predeceased her.
Survivors include three daughters, Sandra Janowski of Chatham, Barbara J. Hamberger of Dover, N.J., and Joyce J. Stanzione of Fairview, N.Y.; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Scott Funeral Home by Father David V. McGuire. Burial will be in Hazelwood cemetery in Rahway, N.J. The family will receive friends 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Scott Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
