Linda Hodnett
RINGGOLD - Linda Hodnett, 54, 2577 Ringgold Church Road, died Tuesday morning, Dec. 30, 1997, at Medical University Hospital of South Carolina, Charleston, S.C., after having an aneurysm Monday.
Born April 4, 1943, in Danville, she was the daughter of Vernon Summers Cullop and Hilda Martin Cullop, who survives.
Most of her life was spent in Schoolfield.
She was married
to Samuel Morrison Hodnett, who survives.
She was a homemaker and supervisor in quality control for H&R Block.
She was a member of Riveroak Church of God and Gideons Auxiliary.
In addition to her husband of the residence and mother of Danville, survivors include two sons, Samuel Morrison Hodnett II of the residence and Steven Marshall Hodnett of Ringgold; a daughter, Synthia Marlene Hodnett Cook of Danville, a brother, Bobby Lee Cullop of Richmond; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Riveroak Church of God by the Rev. Tim Nuckles, the Rev. Doug Barber and the Rev. Robert L. Vermillion. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Jeanne Hueschen
SLIDELL, La. - Jeanne Marie Hueschen, 83, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 1997, at Slidell Memorial due to a heart attack.
A native of France and a resident of Slidell for the past five years, she was a daughter of Paul and Marie Couget, and the stepdaughter of Walter Lozano.
She was the beloved wife of Ernest C. Hueschen.
She was a homemaker.
She was the mother of Cynthia Latapie, Charlene Dugas, Christopher Hueschen, Cheryl Borne, Carl Hueschen and Sylvia Hueschen and the sister of Inez Southard of Danville, Va. There are also 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was the mother-in-law of Ronald Latapie, Gerald Dugas, Barbara Hueschen, Ronald Borne and Janice Hueschen.
Her funeral service was conducted Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997, with burial in New Orleans.
Schoen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
James Smith
CALLANDS - James Curtis Smith, 88, 3201 Sailors Creek Road, died Monday, Dec. 29, 1997, at Eldercare of Franklin County.
Born March 13, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Vergie Pearson Smith and Irvin Smith.
He was married
to Mary Oleta Smith, who survives.
He attended Callands schools and was self employed in machinery.
Survivors include two sons, David W. Smith of Martinsville and James Curtis Smith Jr. of Callands; a sister, Virginia Smith Laprade of Portsmouth; two brothers, Charles Wade Smith of Callands and Douglas Smith of Danville; and four grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a sister, Louise Clark; and two brothers, John Smith and Addison Smith.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday at Matthew Memorial Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in the Smith Family cemetery in Callands.
The family will receive friends at noon Thursday at the church before the service.

James Brooks
UNION HALL - James Edgar Brooks, 87, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 1997, at a local hospital.
He was married
to Nena Belle Brown Brooks for 65 years, who predeceased him.
Survivors include two sons, Edgar Clinton Brooks of Union Hall and James Euell Brooks of Chatham; two daughters, Neva Farris of Rocky Mount and Mamie Browning of Smyrna, Tenn.; a sister, Gladys Brooks Dudley of Glade Hill; a brother, Woodrow Brooks of Rocky Mount; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Flora Funeral Chapel in Rocky Mount by the Rev. J. Larry Holland. Burial will be in Franklin Memorial Park.
Friends may call after 2 p.m. Saturday, and the family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Melvin Gunn
Funeral services for Melvin William Gunn, 164 Epps St., will be conducted 1 p.m. today at the chapel of Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home by the Rev. C.E. Bigelow. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
He died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 20, 1919, in Caswell County, N.C., he was a son of William Gunn and Mary Blackwell Gunn.
He was married
to Mattie R. Gunn, who survives.
He was a former employee of Dan River Inc., and he also worked as a painter.
He was a member of Sassafras Grove Baptist Church in Yanceyville, N.C.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Ann Elizabeth Dawson of Pittsburgh; four sisters, Christine Clyburn of Landover, Md., Julia Howard and Clara McCain, both of Pelham, N.C., and Mattie Crawley of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three brothers, Alexander Gunn of Washington, D.C., and Bernard Gunn of Pelham, N.C., and William Gunn of Danville; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Sudie Marshall
Funeral services for Sudie Matherly Marshall, 97, 218 Edgewood Drive, will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Dale Watson. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
She died Thursday morning, Sept. 18, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 16, 1899, in Pulaski County, she was a daughter of John Ensor Matherly and Isabelle Largin Matherly.
She was married
to Birzilla Blaine Marshall, who died June 25, 1973.
Since 1918, she had been a resident of Danville.
In 1959, she retired from Efirds Department Store, where she was an alterations clerk.
She was a member of the First Church of the Brethren of Glen Oak Drive, and had been a member since 1921. She was a former Sunday school teacher and a member of the finance committee of the church.
She also had served as president of Women's Fellowship as well as serving 15 years as the church treasurer, and had assisted with Bible school.
Survivors include a son, Sager Elwood Marshall of Richmond; three daughters, Gerolean M. Buckner of Pulaski, Elaine M. Martin of Rustburg and June M. Blevins of Newport News; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
'Ping' Taylor
Ruth "Ping" Dillard Taylor, 70, 2 Milton Ave., died Friday afternoon, Sept. 19, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 4, 1927, in Danville, she was a daughter of Avery P. Dillard and Della Mae Adams Dillard.
On April 25, 1953, she was married
to Otha Lee Taylor, who survives.
She was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Susan "Sue" T. Glasgow of Danville; a sister, Velma D. Hogan of Danville; and two grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a sister, Mae D. Hurd.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Schoolfield cemetery by the Rev. Johnny Jones and the Rev. Duane Blevins.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, 207 West Woodlawn Drive.

Mamie Thornton
BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Mamie Thornton, 72, died Sunday morning, Sept. 14, 1997, at Beth-Israel Medical Center in Brooklyn.
Born May 8, 1925, in Caswell County, N.C., she was a daughter of McKinley Thornton and Jennie Thornton.
She was educated in the public schools of Caswell County, N.C.
Survivors include three daughters, Evon McCloud of Danville, Va.; Betty Jeffreys of Blanch, N.C., and Carolyn Farmer of Brooklyn; a brother, Walter Thornton of Danville; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at New Haven Baptist Church in Milton, N.C., by the Rev. Floyd Standfield. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation for family and friends will be 12-8 p.m. today at Plenty Funeral Home Chapel in Semora, N.C.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, Betty Jeffreys, Blanch Road, Blanch, N.C.
Elizabeth Grays
BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Elizabeth Snipes Grays, 62, 235 Hoyt St., died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 1997, at her residence.
Born Feb. 28, 1935, in Danville, Va., she was a daughter of George Snipes and Exie Sutzer Snipes.
She was a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses.
She was married
to Willie Grays, who is predeceased.
Survivors include two sons, Willie Grays Jr. of Brooklyn, and Vincent Grays of Danville; three daughters, Deborah Jane Grays and Anne Stills, both of Brooklyn, and Karen Bradshaw of Kinston, N.C.; three sisters, Lillian Carter, Dorothy Price and Georgianna Murilto, all of Danville; one brother, John Crowder of Brooklyn; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today at L.H. Brooks & Brother Funeral Chapel by Brother Henry Pulaski, a Bethelite of the Watch Tower Society of Jehovah's Witness. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
