Dorothy L. Lewis
NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - Dorothy L. Lewis, 75, died Friday, Sept. 19, 1997, after a lengthy illness.
Born Sept. 25, 1921, in Danville, she was a daughter of Bruce and Bertha Barber.
She was a Peninsula resident since 1958.
She was also a member of Bethany Baptist Church.
She was married
to Henry W. Lewis for 58 years.
In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons, Fred Lewis and Michael Lewis, both of Newport News; two daughters, Betty Lovings of Newport News and Kathy Caskie of Hampton; two sisters, Catherine Lynch and Frances Boaze, both of Ringgold; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday in Peninsula Funeral Home by the Rev. Frank Earwood of Bethany Baptist Church. Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Park in Hampton.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Margaret D. Lewis
Margaret Dodson Lewis, 80, 1149 Halifax Road, died Friday, Sept. 19, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, after being hospitalized for nine days.
Born July 14, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of George Ball Dodson and Martha Ellen Tate Dodson.
She spent her entire life in Pittsylvania County and Danville, where she retired from Star Paper Tube Inc. after several years of service.
She was a member of Laurel Grove Baptist Church.
On June 19, 1935, she was married
to Clyde Lester Lewis, who survives.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include three sons, James C. Lewis Sr. and George D. Lewis, both of Danville, and Ronnie L. Lewis of Chatham; two daughters, Patsy L. Frances of Gretna, and Betty L. Green of Jesup, Ga.; 11 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday in Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Mark Blair and the Rev. James Bullock. Burial will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 Monday night at the funeral home and other times will be at the residence in the Glenwood community.
Lucy Pittrell
Lucy H. Pittrell, 56, 1300 Branch St., died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 1997, in Stratford Health Care Center.
Born Nov. 14, 1940, in Danville, she was the daughter of Sandy and Virginia Oliver Hairston.
She was married
to Calvin Pittrell.
She worked at Dibrell Brothers Tobacco Co., and was a member of Bethel Way of the Cross.
Survivors include four sons, Ricky Pittrell, Michael Pittrell, James Pittrell, Rochelle Pittrell, all of Danville; one daughter, Shirley Pittrell of Danville; three sisters, Elizabeth Davis of Danville, Mary H. Adams of Yanceyville, N.C., and Mamie Sears of Blackstone; and 10 grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday at Cunningham & Hughes Memorial Chapel by Bishop Joseph Adams. Interment
will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
Her body may be viewed from 4-8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Ricky Walker
RIDGEWAY, Va. - Ricky Leonard Walker, 43, 2267 Moorehead Ave., died Friday, Sept. 19, 1997, in a car accident that occurred in Alamance County, N.C.
Born Sept. 19, 1954, in Danville, he was a son of Harry Leonard Walker and Ruby Mae Collins Walker.
He spent most of his life in Danville and worked as a heavy equipment operator for Branch Highways.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his mother of Danville, survivors include two sons, Jason Walker of Dry Fork, and Joshua Walker of Danville; two sisters, Vicky Dawson of Danville, and Dessie Reiter of King, N.C.; four brothers, Nathan Duncan of Martinsville, Eddie Walker of Ridgeway, Glenn Walker of Danville, and Randy Walker of Newport News; and one grandchild.
He was predeceased by one brother, Brian Keith Walker, and one daughter, Rebecca Walker.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Barker Funeral Home. Burial will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight, and other times will be at the home of his son, Joshua Walker, 1598 Ferry Road.
John Coles
John Langston Coles, 59, of 136 East Thomas St., died Thursday, Sept. 18, 1997, at his residence.
Born June 9, 1938 in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Williams Coles and Ollie E. Crews Coles.
He was married
to Ora Jean Womack, who survives.
He was a driver for Capital Cab Co. for many years.
In addition to his wife and father, both of Danville, survivors include two daughters, Brenda Coles and Wanda Lee Coles, both of Danville; six sons, Howard Coles, Michael Coles, Jimmy Coles and Bernard Coles, all of Newark, N.J., Ronnie Coles of Danville and Tyrone Coles of Virginia Beach; four sisters, Jean Coles Moore of Bronx, N.Y., and Eunice Coles, Brenda Coles Pounds and Phyllis M. Moore, all of Danville; and two brothers, Mack A. Coles and Marshall Coles, both of Blairs.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday at Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church by Dr. Rev. H.G. McGhee. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Leslie Harris
Leslie "Bud" Harris, 76, of 187 Ficklen Ave., died Sunday, Sept. 21, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center, after a short illness and a hospital stay since Friday, Sept. 19, 1997.
Mr. Harris was born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, on April 13, a son of the late Albert Harris and Sallie Pillar Harris Evans.
Mr. Harris was married
to Nadine Brooks Harris, who survives. They were married
on March 7, 1944.
He was predeceased by one daughter, Leslie Cornelia Harris; and also a brother, Berkley Harris; and two sisters, Gracie Myers and Essie Yates.
Mr. Harris was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during World War II.
He spent most of his life in Danville and lived at the Ficklen Avenue residence for 46 years, and was a member of the American Legion memorial post #325, where he was a past commander, and he was of the Christian faith. He was a representative for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company for 13 years before retiring on disability.
Survivors in addition to his wife of the residence include a son, K. Dale Harris and a daughter-in-law, Karen Clifton Harris, both of Bassett; two sisters, Dorothy Davis and Louise Colvard, both of Danville; and two grandchildren, Matthew Ryan Harris and Megan Elizabeth Harris, both of Bassett.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Frederick J. Vicks. Military Honors will be performed by the American Legion Memorial Post #325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends Monday evening from 7-8:30 at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence, 187 Ficklen Ave.

Jack Milam III
Jack Watson Milam III, 21, of 4336 Mt. Tabor Road, Keeling, died Sunday, Sept. 21, 1997, in Pittsylvania County after an automobile accident.
Born April 11, 1976, in Danville, he was a son of Jack Watson Milam Jr. and Joan Marie Painter Milam.
He lived all his life in Pittsylvania County and the last 11 years in the Keeling Community. He was a self-employed roof painter.
He attended the Church of God of the Prophecy.
In addition to his parents of the residence, survivors include a fiancee, Kimberly Bates of the residence; two brothers, Jarrett L. Milam and Michael S. Milam, both of the residence; three sisters, Tina M. Campbell of Ringgold, Sabrina M. Moser of Chatham and Tabitha M. Milam of the residence; his paternal grandparents, Robert and Margaret Gravely of Axton; and his maternal grandparents, Paul and Ruby Painter of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Church of God of Prophecy, Seminole Drive, by the Rev. Jack Roberston, the Rev. James Albert and the Rev. Albert Moser. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
Mr. Milam's body will be at the residence for viewing and visitation until Wednesday morning. The family will be at the residence, 4336 Mt. Tabor Road, Route 729 off of Old Route 360, Keeling.

Ruth Shelton
GRETNA - Ruth Martin Shelton, 76, of 673 Blue Ridge Drive, died Saturday, Sept. 20, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 6, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Charles Anderson Martin and Ora Ramsey Martin. She was predeceased by a brother, David Martin Sr.
She and her husband Edrie L. "Pete" Shelton, were co-owners of Swanson-Shelton Farm and Galveston Mills.
Mrs. Shelton was a member of the Gretna Christian Church, where she was a former deaconness and Sunday school teacher. She was recognized by the church in 1989 with the Devoted Service of the Year Award. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #232.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law; Barry and Alice Gourley of Danville, and Aubrey and Joan Yeatts, Milton and Susan Elliott, and Bruce and Laurie Moran, all of Gretna; a sister, Angie Busbee of Erie, Pa.; seven grandchildren, a step-grandchild, a great-grandchild; and a step-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at Gretna Christian Church by the Rev. Cecil Rhodes and the Rev. Roy Parker. Interment
will follow in Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends Monday evening from 7-8 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence, 673 Blue Ridge Drive, Gretna.
