Carrie Lynch
Carrie Mae Atkinson Burch Lynch, 75, 313 Wrenn Drive, died Sunday, Sept. 21, 1997, at Stratford Health Care Center following three years of declining health.
Born Feb. 2, 1922, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Scarlett Dillard Burch Sr., and Lemma Jackson Atkinson.
She was married
to Herman Alfred Burch Sr., who predeceased her. She was later married
to John Elroy Lynch, who survives.
She spent most of her life in Danville and Pittsylvania County.
Prior to her retirement, she worked as a bookkeeper for several local banks and businesses.
She also worked for Thalhimer's in sales. She was a member of Thalhimer's retirement organization for a number of years.
She was of the Methodist faith.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Scarlett Burch Hall of Danville; a son, Herman Al Burch Jr. of Danville; a stepdaughter, Pat Lynch Gibson of Danville; a brother, S.D. Atkinson Jr. of Swansonville; two sisters, Rebecca A. Murray of Danville and Joan Easley of Chatham; four grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main Chapel, by the Rev. David Ball. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Annie Jones
RINGGOLD - Annie Hayes Jones, 94, Route 2, died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 1997, at Piney Forest Health Care Center after 10 years of declining health.
She had been a resident of the nursing home for seven years.
Born Sept. 18, 1903, in the Blairs community of Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of William Fleming Hayes and Ida Hall Hayes.
She was married
to Beverly Martin Jones, who died April 1, 1984.
She had lived in the Ringgold community since 1966.
She was a member of Ringgold Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Alease Jones Goodvich of Pompano Beach, Fla.; a son, Erskine L. Jones of Ringgold; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time with Swicegood Funeral Home.
The family receive friends at the residence of her son, 2957 Hillside Road, Ringgold.
Louise McCain
S. Louise Anthony McCain, 82, of 1653 Piney Forest Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 16, 1915, in Rock Hill, S.C., she was a daughter of Ernest Neander Anthony Sr. and Irene Cogbill Anthony.
On June 30, 1948, she was married
to Eugene Garland McCain Jr., who died in 1988.
Mrs. McCain had moved to Danville at a very young age and lived most of her life here.
She was educated in the Danville Public School System and is a graduate of George Washington High School and Longwood College. She taught home economics for four years at Victoria Virginia before joining the Danville Public School System, where she taught until her retirement in 1975.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where she was a past co-president and co-treasurer of Outlook Bible Class.
She was a member of Presbyterian Women and past member of the N.C.-Va. Geneology Society and the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History.
During World War II, she served as a Lt. j.g. in the Navy Waves.
Survivors include a sister, Jane A. Ashworth of Danville; three nephews, Darra N. Anthony, Steven A. Ashworth and David D. Ashworth; a grandniece, Chastity Ashworth; and a grandnephew, James Ashworth.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her daughter, Dianne McCain; two brothers, James T. Anthony and Ernest N. Anthony Jr.; and a sister, Clara V. Anthony.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Jack Heinsohn Jr. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main Chapel, and other times at the residence of Jane A. Ashworth, 221 Parkland Drive off North Main Street.
Howard Bryant Sr.
Howard Winston Bryant Sr., 75, formerly of Route 2, Box 309, died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 1997, at Blue Ridge Rehabilitation Center in Martinsville.
Born May 27, 1922, in Chatham, he was the son of William Jennings Bryant and Mollie Myers Bryant.
He was married
to Jacqueline Young Bryant, who died Nov. 10, 1996.
A retired tobacco farmer, he was also a former employee of Dan River Inc., and the City of Danville.
During World War II, he was a shipbuilder for the Naval Shipyard in Norfolk.
He was a former member of Southall Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Carole Marsh and Joyce Bryant, both of Greensboro, N.C.; three sons, Kenneth Bryant of Chatham, Julian Bryant of Semora, N.C., and Howard W. Bryant Jr. of Danville; two sisters, Clara B. Terry and Ora B. Hughes, both of Danville; and four grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday in Schoolfield cemetery by the Rev. Larry Hill.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Barker Funeral Home.

Elsie Lawrence
ROCKY MOUNT - Elsie Davis Lawrence, 84, died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 1997, at a local nursing home.
She was the widow of Carroll Franklin Lawrence, and had 26 years of nursing service with Franklin Memorial Hospital.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, C. Don & Carolyn N. Lawrence of Midlothian.
Graveside services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday in Highland Burial Park, Danville.
The family will receive friends 10 a.m.- 12 noon Friday at Flora Funeral Service, S. Main Street, Rocky Mount.
Deron Mateer
Deron Mathew Mateer, 131 Conway Road, died Wednesday morning, Sept. 24, 1997, at Duke University Medical Center.
Born Dec. 31, 1974, in Waynesboro, he was a son of the Rev. Ronald W. Mateer and Saundra Shetron Mateer, who survive.
He was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, where he was a Sunday school teacher 1-2 grade.
A senior at Averett College, he was a writer for Evince Magazine.
He was a member of the National Honor Society, Baptist Student Union at Averett College, the praise choir and Council of Ministries administrative board.
In addition to his parents of Danville, survivors include a brother, Brian Mateer of Danville; his paternal grandfather, William A. Mateer of Roanoke; his paternal grandmother, Arlene Kramer of Chambersburg, Pa.; his maternal grandfather, John Shetron of Chambersburg, Pa.; and his maternal grandmother, Betty Shetron of Chambersburg, Pa.
Funeral services will be conducted 3:30 p.m. Friday at Saint Luke's United Methodist Church by the Rev. Robinson H. McAden, the Rev. Robert Martin and Dr. David Palmer.
Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the church, and other times at the residence.

James Mease
SANDY LEVEL - James Albert Mease, 79, 8820 Grass Land Drive, died Monday morning, Sept. 22, 1997, at Blue Ridge Rehabilitation Center in Martinsville.
Born May 22, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Albert Mease and Nonnie Reynolds Mease.
He was a retired farmer, and he was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Mease of Sandy Level; two daughters, Annie Kasey of Capitol Heights, Md., and Linda Mease of Danville; a stepdaughter, Betty Starling of Chatham; six grandchildren and three step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and a step-great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by four brothers, Paul Mease, Booker Mease, Gilford Mease and Verlie Mease; and a sister, Peachie Finney.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at the chapel of Miller Funeral Home by the Rev. Hubert White. Burial will be in the Mease Family cemetery in Sandy Level.
Ida Baines
Ida Taylor Baines, 95, 120 Howeland Circle, died Thursday afternoon, Sept. 25, 1997, at her residence after a five month decline in health.
Born Aug. 7, 1902, in Columbus, Ga., she was the daughter of Seth Taylor and Lottie Ann Screws Taylor.
On Dec. 18, 1921, she was married
to Leo S. Baines, who died in 1955.
Since 1906, she had made her home in Danville, where she was educated in the Danville public schools.
She was a graduate of Philadelphia School of Nursing, National Institute of America for Writers and Life Time Career School of Doll Technology.
She was a seamstress for many years. She also worked as a practical nurse at Roman Eagle Memorial Home until retiring at 75 to take care of her Doll Hospital and Museum that she started in 1975.
She was a member of West Main Baptist Church and the Senior Citizens Club of the church.
She was also a member of Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History and the International Doll Association.
She was the last of her generation of the family.
Survivors include a son, Billie L. Baines of the residence; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Leo S. Baines Jr. and a daughter, Alice L. Lyon.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at West Main Baptist Church by the Rev. Bruce Wilson. Burial will be in Green Hill cemetery.
