Thomas Bouldin

DRAKES BRANCH - Thomas Tyler Bouldin, 91, died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 1997.

Survivors include a sister, Isabell S. Bouldin of Maryland; and a brother, Claiborne Bouldin Jr. of Keysville.

Funeral services will be conducted 4 p.m. Saturday at Grace Episcopal Church in Drakes Branch. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary United Methodist Church cemetery.

Browning Funeral Home, Keysville, is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Oakes

BLAIRS - Mary Fowlkes Oakes, 89, 120 Snakepath Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 1997, at Gretna Health Care Center in Gretna.

Born April 3, 1908, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Marcie Fowlkes and Susie Cook Fowlkes.

She was married to Ryland Shields Oakes Sr., who predeceased her.

She was a member of Oakland United Methodist Church.

For the past two years, she had been a resident of Gretna Health Care Center in Gretna.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Sue McBride of Dry Fork and Judith Moser of Danville; 12 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her son, Ryland Shields Oakes Jr.; and her brother, Samuel Justis Fowlkes.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Oakland United Methodist Church by the Rev. Lou Martin. Burial will be in the church cemetery in Dry Fork.

The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Scott Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of Susan Miller, 604 Snakepath Road, Blairs.

William 'Bill' Pleasant

William "Bill" Arch Pleasant died Sept. 25, 1997, at Alamance-Caswell Hospice Residence in Burlington, N.C.

He was born April 10, 1925, in Person County, at the family residence in Leasburg. He was the son of H. Marvin Pleasant and Ida Sue Clayton Pleasant.

He is survived by his wife, Naomi Thacker Pleasant of West Yanceyville, N.C.; a son, William Andrew "Andy" Pleasant of West Yanceyville, N.C.; and a sister, Corinna Pleasant Burke of Yanceyville, N.C.

Mr. Pleasant attended Bartlett Yancey High School, and was called to serve his country at the age of 18. He was a Sergeant and Squad Leader for Company C 10th Infantry Fifth Division in the European African Middle Eastern Theater of Operations.

He was awarded nine citations by the President of the U.S. for his actions in World War II.

After military service, he returned to Yanceyville, N.C., where he gave much of his time and love to his family, his church and his community.

He was a 59 year member of Yanceyville United Methodist Church, where he served many positions in church leadership.

Mr. Pleasant was employed, after his return from military service, with the N.C. Department of Transportation. He also owned and operated Pleasant's Esso with his brother, Robert, who is now deceased.

He accepted a position with the ABC Board, and later attended studies at State College in the insurance curriculum.

He spent the rest of his life in the insurance business until his health required him to retire.

He gave of his time to many county and community civic organizations, including being board member of the Caswell Parrish.

He was a member of VFW Post 7316, where he held many positions, including Post Commander, through the years and American Legion Post 89. He was VFW Post Chaplain at the time of his death.

He was a blood donor for the Red Cross most of his adult life, and was a Meals on Wheels volunteer.

In earlier years, he was an outfielder for the Purley Tigers baseball team, which he enjoyed very much.

Members of VFW Post 7316 and American Legion Post 89 will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. today at Yanceyville United Methodist Church by the Rev. David Powell and the Rev. Vassar Jones.

Visitation will be held immediately following the service at the church.

A private burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family request donations be made to Yanceyville United Methodist Church cemetery Fund, c/o Tommy Davis, P.O. Box 1108, Yanceyville, N.C. 27370 or to Hospice Alamance-Caswell, P.O. Box 2122, Burlington, N.C. 27216.

Marley Funeral Home, Yanceyville, N.C., is in charge of arrangements.

Frank White

Frank A. White, 78, 220 Arnett Blvd., died Thursday, Sept. 25, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center following three days in the hospital.

Born Dec. 12, 1918, in Madison County, he was a son of Charles Phillip White and Grace Strother White.

On April 20, 1946, he was married to Shirley Walker White, who survives.

Since 1948, he had been a resident of Danville.

For 31 years, he associated with A & P Tea Company, and was store manager in the Danville store when he retired in 1981.

He was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church.

He was also a member of Young at Heart Club and Ramah Masonic Lodge No. 70, and a former member of Danville Photographers Club.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.

In addition to his wife of Danville, survivors include a daughter, Judith W. Wyatt of Staunton; two sisters, Ruby W. Shifflett and Vivian W. Taylor, both of Orange; two brothers, Earl White and Warren White, both of Orange; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Keen Street Baptist Church by the Rev. Michael Campbell and the Rev. George Rumney. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main Chapel, and other times at the residence.

Toy Adkins

BLAIRS - Toy Adkins Adkins, 78, of U.S. 29, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 1997, at Stratford Health Care Center in Danville.

Born March 18, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Lonnie D. Adkins and Lucy Walden Adkins.

She was married to Fodie Adkins, who predeceased her.

She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include two sons, Emmett Paul Adkins and Otey B. Adkins, both of Blairs; three daughters, Faye A. Emmett of Lynchburg, Judy A. Pruitt of Blairs and Patsy A. White of Keeling; a sister, Annie A. Gibson of Chatham; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Vester Adkins; two brothers; a sister; and a grandchild.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at the Adkins Family cemetery by the Rev. R.G. Rowland.

The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, Judy Pruitt, 7325 Spring Garden Road, Blairs.

Scott Funeral Home, Chatham, is in charge of arrangements.

Thomas Bouldin

DRAKES BRANCH - Thomas Tyler Bouldin, 91, died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 1997.

He was a son of Claiborne Bouldin and Mary Crump Bouldin of "Golden Hills."

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Alice Goode Bouldin Cox and Mary Crump Bouldin deZerega.

He is survived by his brother, Claiborne Bouldin Jr., one sister, Isabella Spotswood Bouldin, three nephews, Samuel Cecil Bouldin, James Tyler Cox and Claiborne Bouldin III, and one niece, Mary Crump Bouldin Hugenschmidt.

Funeral services will be conducted 4 p.m. Saturday at Grace Episcopal Church in Drakes Branch with interment in Mt. Calvary United Methodist Church cemetery.

Visitation is at Browning Funeral Home, Keysville, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today.

Mary Labie

Mary Lou Simpson Labie, 66, 616 Oxford St., died Friday, Sept. 26, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center following several months of declining health.

Born in Caswell County, she was the daughter of Percy and Bessie Griffith Simpson.

She was married to Joseph E. Labie, who survives.

She attended Caswell County schools.

She was a member of Church Outreach Ministries, and was a homemaker.

In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Mary Hogan of Ringgold; two sons, Michael Labie of Providence, N.C., and David Labie of Danville; two brothers, Harvey Simpson of Providence, N.C., and Calvin Simpson of Danville; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Hooper Funeral Home Chapel in Yanceyville, N.C. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

Crawley Rust

Crawley Rust, 73, 826 Hughes St., died Friday afternoon, Sept. 26, 1997, at Veterans Administration Hospital in Salem.

Born Aug. 25, 1924, in Danville, he was the son of Milton Rust and Elizabeth Munford Rust.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the armored infantry division. He was a machine gunner and a prisoner of war on two occasions, and highly decorated, having received the Purple Heart and a number of battle stars.

He spent most of his life in Danville, where he was a master plumber before becoming disabled.

He was a lifetime member of Archer T. Gammon Chapter 19 of Disabled American Veterans, and a member of VFW Ballard Pruitt Post No. 647 and American Legion Memorial Post No. 325.

Survivors include a daughter, Brenda Faye Rust Parrish of Providence, N.C.; two sons, Douglas Rust of Dry Fork and Marvin "Pete" Rust of Danville; two sisters, Ruby Herndon Sublett of Danville and Juanita Whorley of Tampa, Fla.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Danville Memorial Gardens, where military honors will be performed by American Legion Memorial Post No. 325 Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends at the residence of his daughter, 461 Shady Grove Road, Providence, N.C.

Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
