Beauford Bryant
Dr. Beauford H. Bryant, 74, Bryclair Private Drive, Milligan College, Tenn., died Saturday, Sept. 27, 1997, at his home after a brief illness.
A native of Chatham, Va., he had lived in the Milligan area for the past 47 years. He was the son of Dudley Bryant and Nannie Boling Bryant.
Dr. Bryant had 16 years of post-high school education and had earned a bachelor's degree from Johnson Bible College, a master's degree from Phillips University, a master of theology from Princeton Theological Seminary, a Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh and had studied at the University of Chicago, Harvard, the University of Marburg, the University of Tubingen and Oxford University.
Dr. Bryant retired after 30 years as professor of Bible at Emmanuel School of Religion. Prior to this, he was employed at Milligan College in the same position for 10 years. Dr. Bryant had also been a faculty member at Phillips University in Enid, Okla., for nine years.
He was a member of Downtown Christian Church, Johnson City, Tenn.
Dr. Bryant was a member of the Society of Biblical Literature and the American Association of University Profesors.
Dr. Bryant was preceded in death by three brothers.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Larson Bryant; one daughter, Susan Bryant of Charleston, S.C.; two sisters, Hazel Shellhorse of Gretna and Louise B. Toney of Chatham; and many nieces and nephews.
A service of memory and celebration of the life and labors of Dr. Beauford H. Bryant, will be conducted 7 p.m. Monday from the Emmanuel School of Religion. Dr. Calvin L. Phillips, Dr. Robert F. Hull Jr., Mr. Thomas E. Stokes, Mr. Robert Wetzel and Mr. Michael Dunn will officiate.
Burial will follow graveside services 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Monte Vista Burial Park.
The family and friends will meet at Morris-Baker Funeral Home at 12:30 p.m. and proceed to the cemetery for committal services.
Active pallbearers will be Jack Hall, Ray Lyons, Dean Reynolds, Thomas Webster, Eric Thomason, Steve Wilhite, Paul Roberts and Craig Augenstine. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Emmanuel School of Religion and Milligan College faculties.
For those who prefer, in lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Beauford H. Bryant Seminar Library Fund, c/o Emmanuel School of Religion, One Walker Drive, Johnson City, TN 37601.
The family will receive friends at the Emmanuel School of Religion from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday.

Mary Currin
MARION - Mary Linda Wilson Currin, 78, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 1997, at the Smyth County Community Hospital, Marion.
Survivors include two daughters, Rebecca Wilson Currin of Richmond and Amanda Jane Currin of Eden, N.C.; one sister, Alberta Grace of Clinton, Tenn.; and one brother, Shields Wilson of Chattanooga, Tenn.
A funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church in Marion by the Rev. Jim Pollock. Burial will follow in the Rose Lawn cemetery.
The body will be taken to the church one hour before the service.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Seaver-Brown Chapel.
George Manley Jr.
George Washington Manley Jr., 71, of 1737 River Ridge Road, died 6:40 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for a number of years.
Born April 11, 1926, in Danville, he was the son of George Washington Manley Sr. and Lily Owen Manley.
Mr. Manley was of the Baptist faith. He was a retired antique dealer who lived most of his life in the Danville area. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II.
He was married
to Dorothy New Manley.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons and two daughters-in-law, Richard L. Manley and Julia M. Manley of Bedford, Harry "Butch" Manley of Danville, and Terry G. Manley and Debra G. Manley of Danville; one daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia M. Lawson and Randy Lawson of Pelham, N.C.; four sisters, Gracie M. Franklin and Lois M. Bray, both of Danville, Stella M. Wright of Gretna and Jesse M. Shiflett of Gainesville, Ga.; a brother, Robert W. Manley of Bedford; and seven grandchildren, Chasity M. Gibson, Brandi Lawson, Brian Lawson, Kerri Lawson, Tina Tatum, D.W. Nester and Mary Nester.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday in Mountain View cemetery by the Rev. Bill Adams.
The family will receive from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Barker Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the residence, 1737 River Ridge Road off Moorefield Bridge Road.
James Redd Sr.
James Henry Redd Sr., 85, 4538 Java Road, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 6, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Eddie Washington Redd and Mary Roach Redd.
A retired farmer, he was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
He was married
to Minerva Edwards Redd.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Edna Redd Strickland of Java; a son, James H. Redd Jr. of Miller's Tavern; two brothers, Edward Redd of Java and Carlton Redd of Halifax County; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by two sons, Woodrow N. Redd and Roger Lee Redd.
A funeral wil be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from St. Paul's Episcopal Church cemetery at Java by the Rev. Dr. John S. Ruef. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Scott Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence.
Geneva Shelton
Geneva Campbell Shelton, 94, formerly of 414 Princeton Road, died Saturday afternoon, Sept. 27, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in health since January 1997. She had resided with her granddaughter for the past four months.
Born May 26, 1903, in Stuart, she was a daughter of John Campbell and Mattie Blalock Campbell.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Lee Shelton.
She had spent most of her life in the Danville area, where she was a homemaker and a member of Stokesland United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one son, Ernest Lee Shelton of Danville; one daughter, Elizabeth Walker of Danville; two sisters, Hattie Gray of Danville and Georgia Ferguson of Eden, N.C.; and seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Linwood Hairfield and the Rev. Calvin Johnson. Interment
will follow at Higland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, and at other times will be at the residence of her granddaughter, Charlotte Shelton, at 2861 Hillside Road, Ringgold.
Lawrence Wilson
Lawrence Edward Wilson Sr., 70, died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 1997, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 17, 1927, in Danville, he was the son of John N. Wilson Sr. and Annie Gardner Wilson.
He was married
to Annie C. Lovelace, who predeceased him.
Survivors include one son, Lawrence Wilson Jr. of Virginia Beach; one daughter, Betty Clark of Philadelphia; four sisters, Cecil Belcher and Darlene Knight, both of Danville, Marcell Wimbush of Dry Fork and Erounia Coles of Philadelphia; one brother, John N. Wilson Jr. of Danville; and four grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. at Camp Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Willie J. Toomer. Interment
will follow in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 122 Lovelace Drive.

Virginia Bowers
SUTHERLIN - Virginia Hodges Bowers, 73, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 1997, at her home.
She is survived by a daughter, Lisa B. Oliver of Sutherlin; two sisters, Tee Stillman of Sutherlin and Hilda Moody of Richmond; and two grandchildren.
Memorial services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Episcopal Church. Burial will follow at a later date.

Lucious "Luke" Elliott
DRY FORK - Lucious "Luke" Elliott, 84, 1612 Sunset Drive, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 1997, at the Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for a number of years.
Born July 29, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Wadda Samuel Elliott and Kate Wells Elliott. Most of his life was spent in the Whitmell Community, where he was a retired farmer.
He was a member of the Whitmell United Methodist Church.
He served in the Army during World War II, and was a prisoner of war for 18 months. He received the Purple Heart.
He was the last surviving member of his generation. A large number of cousins survive.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from the Whitmell United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jeff Canon and the Rev. U.G. Bailey. Interment
will be in the Wells Family cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-8:30 Tuesday night at the Swicegood Funeral Home.
Harry Flynn
Harry Weisiger Flynn, 86, 281 Carolina Ave., died Saturday, Sept. 27, 1997, in the Danville Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Richmond on Aug. 13, 1911, a son of Peter Harry Flynn and Helen Weisiger Flynn.
He was married
to the former Katherine Simpson on Aug. 3, 1939.
He attended the University of Richmond and worked in Richmond for the Associated Press and the Richmond News Leader. He moved to Burlington, N.C., in 1937 where he was the plant manager for Celanese-Lanese Corporation. In 1950, he moved to Danville to work for Dan River Mills, where he eventually became manager of the Technical Planning Division. He retired in 1975.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder, clerk of the session, superintendent of the Sunday School and member of the Christian Education Committee. He assisted the minister with hospital visitation.
He was a volunteer at the Danville Regional Medical Center in many departments. He received numerous awards for his hours of volunteer service. He was active as a volunteer in the Hospice Program. He was a former member of the Kiwanis Club, the Lions Club and the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by a daughter, Helen Flynn Walton of Burlington, N.C.; a son, Dr. Harry Weisiger Flynn Jr. of Miami; a sister, Helen Flynn Bailey of Hampton; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday from the First Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Jack Heinsohn Jr. Interment
will be held 2 p.m. in the Pine Hill cemetery in Burlington, N.C.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Townes Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
