Pauline Tipton
A graveside service for Pauline Cockran Tipton, 68, 77 Glennoak Drive, will be conducted 11 a.m. today in Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Albert Crouch.
She died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 18, 1929, in Draper, N.C., she was a daughter of Samuel C. Cockran and Annie Maude Hockum Cockran.
On June 25, 1947, she was married
to William G. Tipton, who survives.
She spent most of her life in Danville, and was a member of Mosely Memorial Methodist Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Patricia T. Rigney, Glenda T. Saul and Gloria C. Taylor, all of Danville; a son, Samuel G. Tipton of Danville; seven sisters, Christine C. Gill of Archdale, N.C., and Ruth C. Bolton of High Point, N.C., and Juanita C. Warren, Elsie C. Campbell, Linda C. Harville and Becky C. Harris, all of Danville, and Helen C. McAllister of Roanoke; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by a grandson.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Elvin 'Grannie' Dunn
DOVER, Del. - Elvin Rodden "Grannie" Dunn, 76, died Friday, Sept. 26, 1997, at Kent General Hospital after a short illness.
Born Nov. 15, 1920, in Danville, Va., she was the oldest daughter of Russell and Pearl Rodden.
She was married
for 54 years to George C. Dunn. who predeceased her.
She and her family moved to Delaware in January of 1954.
She became an active member of the Presbyterian Church of Dover, Caesar Rodney PTA and Girl Scouts.
Survivors include two daughters, Bonnie D. Wiley of Dover and Julie A. Dugger of Dallas; a sister, Margaret Nance of Vernon Hill, Va.; a half sister, Helen McDaniel of Concord, Va.; six grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at the Presbyterian Church of Dover by Robin K. White.
A graveside service will be conducted noon Tuesday at Highland Burial Park in Danville by the Rev. Paul Johnson.
Jacqueline 'Jackie' Stephens
SOUTH HILL - Jacqueline "Jackie" Allen Stephens, 58, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 1997, at her residence.
She was married
to Jesse G. Stephens, who survives.
She was a registered nurse for the Brunswick County Public School System.
In addition to her husband, survivors include two daughters, Cynthia Ann West of Chase City and Sandra Jean Thompson of La Crosse; a son, Curtis Ray Stephens of Hampton; her mother, Roberta Cabaniss of Danville; a brother, Leonard T. Allen of Smithfield, Ark.; and four grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home. Burial will be in Crestview Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
Winfred Surratt
Winfred Henry Surratt, 63, 594 Princeton Road, died Friday morning, Oct. 3, 1997, at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C. He had been in declining health for the past three years.
Born Feb. 7, 1934, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Mosel Surratt and Violet Booth Surratt Yates, who survives.
He was married
to Virginia Carol Mitchell, who survives.
He was retired from Dan River Inc., and had served in the U.S. Army.
He attended Gospel Lighthouse Church.
In addition to his wife and mother of Danville, survivors include a son, Mark Henry Surratt of Dry Fork; two daughters, Kimberly S. Wilson of Dry Fork and Susan S. Rice of Danville; two sisters, Mary Newby and Ola Mae Cobb of Danville; two grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his brother, Allie Clay Surratt Sr.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Chapel by the Rev. Roy Taylor and the Rev. Rudolph Gilley. Burial will be in Schoolfield cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of her daughter, Kimberly S. Wilson of the Country Village Trailer Court off the Whitmell School Road No. 750, Lot No. 7.
Thomas Holloway
Thomas J. Holloway, 84, formerly of 445 Gilbert Drive, died Friday evening, Oct. 3, 1997, in the Martinsville Rehab Center, where he had lived for the past 21/2 years.
Born Oct. 9, 1912, in Tupelo, Miss., he was the son of John F. Holloway and Mattie Elizabeth Burns Holloway.
He spent most of his life in Danville, where he was retired from Dan River Inc. after 30 years.
He was of the Baptist faith.
He was survived by one sister, Mary H. Webster of Julian, N.C.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. today in Mountain View cemetery by the Rev. Jack Robertson.

Martha Hyler
Martha Turpin Hyler, 73, of 222 Courtland St., Apartment 109, died Saturday morning, Oct. 4, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center after a one-year decline in health.
Born May 26, 1924, in the Bachelors Hall community of Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Martha Turpin Hyler and Joseph Robert Hyler.
She was a veteran of the U.S. Navy WAVES during World War II.
She had lived and worked in Fayetteveille, N.C., for more than 40 years where she was employed by the Village Drive Medical Center and later in the office of Dr. Fran Campbell. After retiring, she moved into Holiday Village in Danville.
She was also a member of First Baptist Church in Fayetteville, N.C.
Survivors include two sisters, Ann Hyler Fowler of Danville, and Lottie Hyler Craddock of Bachelors Hall.
She was predeceased by three sisters and four brothers.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Fayetteville.

Elnora Mayo
Elnora Terry Mayo, 71, of 541 Walter Bearer Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 1997, at her residence.
Born Sept. 30, 1926, she was a daughter of Wilson Terry and Netta Beck.
She was married
to John Mayo, who survives.
She was an employee of Dibrell, now DIMON Inc., for many years.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one son, Jesse Oliver of Trenton, N.J.; four sisters, Queen Stone, Margaret Payne, Thelma Terry and Lucy Terry, all of Danville; seven grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today at New Mine Creek Primitive Baptist Church by the Rev. Bernard Bolton. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

HOPEWELL, Va. - Cephas Moore, 94, formerly of Danville, died on Thursday, Oct. 2, 1997, at his residence.
He was married
to Nadine Jackson Moore, who survives.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, Walton Moore of Florida; and one daughter, Nancy M. Wilson of Washington, D.C.; two stepdaughters, Martha Rimmer, and Gail G. Graham of Hopewell; one stepson, Bill Gammon; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted noon Monday at First Presbyterian Church in Hopewell.
Elma Motley
Mrs. Elma Thelma B. Motley, 72, of 5524 Old Richmond Road, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 1997, at her residence.
Born Dec. 14, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Beverly Turner and Alice Turner.
She was employed by Red Leather Furniture Co. for many years.
She was married
to Fred Willie Motley, who survives.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Ellen W. Baize and Zennie Glass, both of Danville; one son, William A. "Henry" Motley of Danville; three brothers, Louis Turner of Detroit, Willie Turner of Blairs, and Oscar Turner of Philadelphia; five sisters, Louise Fitzgerald of Java, Annie Badgett of Gretna, Annie Coleman of Chester, Pa., Mattie Turner of Delaware, and Evelyn Turner of New York; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Shockoe Baptist Church by the Rev. George H. Pass. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
