Anne Winn
Mrs. Anne Thornton Winn, 78, of 11200 Mount Cross Road, died Saturday morning, Oct. 4, 1997, at the Stratford Health Care Center.
Born Nov. 2, 1918, in Draper, N.C., she was a daughter of James Christopher Thornton Jr. and Ada Cates Thornton, who survives.
On Jan. 6, 1935, she was married
to Oscar Winn, who survives.
She was a homemaker and had lived in the Vance community of Pittsylvania County since 1946.
She was also a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church.
In addition to her mother of Danville and husband of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Marjorie Winn Bishop Torrence of Waverly; two sisters, Lillian Hardy of Danville, and Julia Carter of Brosville; one brother, J.C. Thornton III of Danville; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at the Winn Family cemetery in the Vance community by the Rev. Allen Holder.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. tonight at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Thomas Holloway
Thomas J. Holloway, 84, formerly of 445 Gilbert Drive, died Friday evening, Oct. 3, 1997, in the Martinsville Rehab Center, where he had lived for the past 21/2 years.
Born Oct. 9, 1912, in Tupelo, Miss., he was the son of John F. Holloway and Mattie Elizabeth Burns Holloway.
He spent most of his life in Danville, where he retired from Dan River Inc. after 30 years.
He was of the Baptist faith.
He was survived by one sister, Mary H. Webster of Julian, N.C.
The graveside service was conducted 2 p.m. Sunday in Mountain View cemetery.

Kirby Kirks
Kirby P. Kirks, 71, of Fredericksburg, died Friday, Sept. 26, 1997, in the Woodmont Nursing Home.
Born April 22, 1926, in Schoolfield, he was the son of Joseph O. Kirks and Lonie Rowland Kirks.
He was married
to Lucille S. Kirks of Fredericksburg.
He was a retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam. After his military retirement, he spent his remaining working career with Halifax Engineering Inc. in Alexandria, where he retired as vice president.
In addition to his wife, survivors include four sons, Steve Kirks of Manassas, Brad Kirks of Shippensburg, Pa., David Kirks of Freehold, N.J. and Michael Kirks of Sacramento, Calif.; three sisters, Mildred Hooper of Chesapeake, Frances Kahle of Raleigh, N.C., and Faye Simon of Manassas; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Wednesday at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service Fredericksburg Chapel by the Rev. Paul A. Horne. Burial will be in Arlington National cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service Fredericksburg Chapel.
Bernard Mills
Bernard Arthur Mills, 71, of 4030 Suburban Drive, died Sunday morning, Oct. 5, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a three-month decline in health.
Born Jan. 26, 1926, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Posey Arthur Mills and Cora Scearce Mills.
He was married
to Betty Davis Mills, who survives.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II.
He spent most of his life in the Danville area, where he was a maintenance worker for Big Star Super Market Stores before retiring.
He was a member of Riverview Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Michael E. Mills Sr. of Danville and Larry A. Mills of California; a daughter, Sheila M. Young of Danville; a brother, Robert "Bobby" Mills of Danville; four sisters, Frances Simmons, Hazel Hackworth and Louise Oakes, all of Danville, and Mary Green of Gibsonville, N.C.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Riverview Baptist Church by the Rev. Duane Blevins, the Rev. Johnny Jones and the Rev. Roy Newton. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens where military honors will be performed by the American Legion Memorial Post #325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at Swicegood Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 tonight and at other times will be at the residence, 4030 Suburban Drive.
Marilyn Morton
It is with profound sorrow that we announce the death of Miss Marilyn Anita "Footney" Morton. Miss Morton, better known as "Footney, " departed this life on Sept. 14, 1997, in Washington, D.C.
Born March 4, 1947, in Danville, she was a daughter of Robert Lee Morton Sr. and Shirley Harrison.
She leaves to cherish her memory her father, Mr. Robert Morton Sr. of Danville; her stepmother, Dorothy F. Morton; children, Antoinette, Ricky, Shawn, Gerald, Omar, Edna and Tina; sisters, Geneva Richardson of Atlantic City, N.J., Alma Harrison of Cleveland; brothers, Robert Lee Morton Jr. of Washington, D.C., and Issac Harrison of Cleveland; other sisters and brothers include, Nardia Waller, Rhonda Harris and Kenneth Morton; two uncles, Bishop James Morton of Danville, William "Buddy" Morton of New Rochelle, N.Y.; two aunts, Evangelist Elizabeth Morton, Mary "Peggy" Morton Hall; and numerous grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the home of her father, 632 Doe St.
A memorial service for Miss Marilyn Morton will be conducted noon today at the chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home.

Mary Allen
SOUTH BOSTON - Mary Owen Allen, 93, 1040 Belt Blvd., died Sunday, October 5, 1997, at Riverside Healthcare Center in Danville.
Born June 3, 1904, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Joseph Henry Owen and Emma Jane Compton Owen.
She was married
to Joseph Hugh "Joe" Allen, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Steve Allen of South Boston and Ernest Allen of Greensboro, N.C.; two daughters, Love Martin of Danville and Mary Lea Burton of Richmond; a sister, Pearl O. Compton of South Boston; nine grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs. Burial will be in Halifax Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of Steve and Bettie Allen, 2150 River Road, South Boston.
Patsy Brumfield Anderson
GRETNA - Patsy Brumfield Anderson, 49, of 953 Pittsville Road, died Sunday, October 5, 1997, at her residence.
Born January 18, 1948, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the late Paul Wesley Brumfield and Virginia Barker Brumfield.
Mrs. Anderson was a member of Summersett Baptist Church and the WMU at the church.
She was an employee with the Timken Company.
She is survived by her husband, Lloyd Anderson, of the residence; one daughter and son-in-law, Crystal A. Irby and D. Todd Irby of Lynchburg; five brothers, Vernon Brumfield of Gretna, Morgan Brumfield of Gretna, Andy Brumfield of Pittsville, Paul Brumfield of Danville and Randy Brumfield of Gretna; three sisters, Linda Sue Simpson of Pittsville, Angelia Hines and Donna Meeks of Gretna.
The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Gretna Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 14, Gretna, Va. or Summersett Baptist Church, 3773 Bibee Road, Pittsville.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 8, 1997, at Summersett Baptist Church by the Rev. Bert Johnson. Interment
will be in the church cemetery.

Stella Jones
RICHMOND - Stella Peace Newcomb Jones, 95, of Beaufort Health Care Center, formerly of 77 Stokesland Ave., Danville, died early Monday morning, Oct. 6, 1997, at the Chippenham Medical Center.
Born Sept. 17, 1902, in Cleveland County, Tenn., she was a daughter of John Bruce Peace and Huldia Matthew Peace.
She was married
to Clarence P. Newcomb, who died May 5, 1937. She was later married
to William Sylvester Jones, who died Aug. 1, 1983.
She spent most of her life in Caroline County and Danville, where she worked for Dan River Inc., and also for the Caroline County School System for 18 years as a cafeteria employee.
She was a member of Ladysmith Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Doris Hebert of New Orleans and Koba Hockaday of Richmond; three sons, Clarence P. Newcomb Jr. of Metairie, La., John H. Newcomb of New Orleans and Kenneth W. Jones of Ladysmith; three sisters, Martha Chavis and Opal Large, both of Danville, and Mallie Jacobs of Lythia, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Ruby Zabawa of Arlington and Ruth Barlow of Bowling Green; 19 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by four sisters, Hazel Peace, Esther Fannon, Mary Bowman and Eula Stone; and three brothers, Herman Peace, Curtis Peace and Porter Peace.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Andrew Bullock. Burial will be in Schoolfield cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, and other times at the residence of her sister, Opal Large, 74 Stokesland Ave.
